American Idol Girls slaughter the 80s curlio
 2008-03-05 21:44:55
Television The American Idol girls faced a tough challenge fighting for the 6 places in the Top 12. That challenge isn't nearly as tough as what they'll face next week when they actually have to compete with the guys. This week they only faced each other. Still they managed to slaughter their way through the 80's theme.

Ryan Seacrest first begins by talking to the judges. He asked Randy Jackson if he is nicer this year or if the guys were that good. Randy said the guys were good and the girls have their work cut out for them. Ryan pointed out that the 80's were a big year for Paula Abdul and asked if she had any advice. She told the girls that there were big songs in the 80's. Paula then wanted to know why they weren't wearing ugly clothes and lots of makeup. Ryan asked Simon Cowell who needed to step it up. Simon said everyone does because no one is safe.

First up was Asia'h Epperson, whose most embarrassing moment came when she was an extra on a movie set. It was a rollerskating movie and she hadn't been on skates in awhile. She skated into a set light. She chose "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." The tone of her voice, which makes her sound like she's chronically congested, annoys me. It was peppy but not great. Again, Randy said that he recorded that song with Whitney and said it's a tall order. But that's why Asia'h is on the show and she showed that she deserves to be there. Paula likes that she picked big songs even when she was sick. Simon said it was at best a second-rate Whitney and she didn't hit the big note at the end. After some prodding from Ryan, he admitted it was good enough for the Top 12.

Ryan talked to Kady about her week last week. She said it was very emotional because she thought for sure she'd go home. Her most embarrassing moment was in the 9th grade when she auditioned for a talent show and tripped over the microphone cord. She performed "Who Wants To Live Forever." It was pitchy and bad and not even close to the original. Randy thought it was pretty good since Queenmusic is hard to sing. Paula said it was her best performance to date. Simon thought it was better than last week but he still has issues with her personality. Kady comes off as so fun normally but sings like a robot or a Stepford wife. He thinks she's too gloomy. She pointed out it is a sad song, and he said that you can still make a sad song emotional. Ryan asked Kady what she thinks of Simon's comments. She doesn't understand it. Simon said that he's made his point and not going over it again when Ryan asks him to.

Amanda Overmyer had her embarrassing moment when she burnt down the deck and pool area in her backyard. She performed "I Hate Myself For Loving You." Randy said it was the Amanda that we know and love. Paula says she found her niche. Simon thought it was fantastic and she nailed the song. He added that it was one of his favorite girl performances from this part of the season. He also tried to get her to smile.

Carly Smithson's most embarrassing moment came when she got her legs stuck in the railing at a bar. She sang "I Drove All Night." It was a fairly good performance. Randy said it was very very good and she keeps smashing it every week. Paula thinks Carly is in her niche. She also said that there aren't enough adjectives for Carly's voice. Simon didn't think she picked the right song but she made the most out of it.

Kristy Lee Cook had her embarrassing moment when she was 7. She went through a stage where she pretended she was a dog. She ran around on her hands and knees and barked at people. She sang "Faithfully" by Journey. It was a decent performance with a country twang. The ending was a little shaky. Randy said that dogs and Journey are two things near and dear to his heart. He said no one sings that like Steve Perry, but she added a country twang that he liked. Paula thinks it could be a hit in country music. Simon still thinks she is forgettable and she is battling bigger voices and personalities in the competition.

Ramiele Malubay was embarrassed when in the 5th grade. She rode her bike to a boys house that she liked and dropped of a picture of herself. The boy and his mother came out and saw it then laughed. She performed "Against All Odds" and was pitchy and inconsistent. Randy thought it was a pretty good vocal, but wants Ramiele to find that confidence again. Paula loves her beautiful face and innocent pure voice. At this point the conversation broke down and Paula said that they have the peanut gallery in the audience. Randy called them the other dawg pound. Paula replied by calling them mutts, then said she didn't mean it. Finally she summed up her comments to Ramiele but saying she deserves to be in the Top 12. Simon is distracted because she's little and cute. He thought it was good but didn't hear a "big money" note.

After a break we had a mini-talk to the judges. Ryan asked Paula what Simon says to her during the songs. Randy says he talks about yogurt. Paula says he talks about the moth and the melonball.

Brooke White was 12 or 13 for her embarrassing moment. After church she ran up to her dad and threw her arms around him. It turned out not to be her dad. She performed a stripped down version of "Love is a Battlefield." I just love her, she's awesome. Randy like that it was just the guitar with someone else playing so he could focus on her voice. He didn't think she brought anything new to it. Paula worked with the dancers on that video. She thought it was a wise choice but would have loved to have the band incorporated into the song. Simon disagreed with Paula saying it worked because she didn't have the band with her. He thought it was an original take that the song normally wouldn't suit her but she made it into a different song.

Syesha Mercado had her embarrassing moment in the 2nd grade when she wrote a letter to a crush and put gum in the note. He took the gum and told the teacher. She performed "Saving All My Love For You" as we were running out of time. It was acceptable but not as great as the original. Randy said it was good. Paula called it sophisticated and lovely. Simon thought it was predictable but good.

Random Thoughts:
1.Amanda doesn't really seem to want to be on the show. She doesn't smile. She looks at the edge of the stage. She just seems miserable. I hope that she gets put out of her (and our) misery this week.
2.During the judges review of Kristy's performance, Paula was leaning over onto Simon while Randy talked. Did you notice Paula's hand placement? Simon was getting some "entertainment" from Paula on the side.
3.Ramiele is becoming Jasmine Trias. She's inconsistent and pitchy. Sure she has a pretty and innocent and pure voice. Too bad she can't sing the notes consistently.
4.What was with the judges tonight? Okay so Simon's behaviour is understandable as he did get "excited" by Paula's "entertainment." But someone had to have spiked the water cups tonight.

My Rankings:
Brooke - 10 Love her voice
Carly - 7
Kristy Lee Cook - 6
Syesha - 6
Asia'h - 5
Kady - 4
Ramiele - 3
Amanda - 1

Fredereek's Guide to Get To the Top Ten:

Asia'h - A stepstool to sing her songs in the right key.

Kady - Prozac.

Amanda - ??? - I'm really sttumped by this one.

Carly - No suggestions - probably top 2.

Brooke - Wig & facelift.

Kristy Lee - Be memorable - go sleezy.

Ramiele - "I just moved to Hawaii!"

Syesha - a "Hair club" membership to fix that receding hairline.

I agree with you that Brooke and Carly are the top 2, but I also like Amanda because she is different.

I was thinking Amanda may be shy about her teeth. Has anyone noticed these kids have the straightest, whitest, most perfect teeth? Amanda may not fall into that crowd of making cosmetic teeth a priority, or she could smoke and be self-conscious about her smile. It makes sense because I've often witnessed people who feel this way covering up any attempt to smile. She may also be a little intimidated because a lot of the other girls look like magazine models. Amanda's in the minority as most of the others have had exposure in performing and recording. Not defending her, but just throwing out some ideas.

Random Rantings and Thoughts:

1. The judges - Simon pissed me off tonight. Curlio, go listen to the judges comments carefully and you will hear that one or more microphones picked up Simon making unflattering side comments while Paula was talking during the first half of the show. It started when Ryan commented that the 80's were big for Paula...Simon can clearly be heard to say "that was a long time ago". HELLO? Who cares? He was talking continuously as Paula was stumbling to describe the "pom-pom hair" of the 80's. This made me wonder if a part of Paula's incoherence has to do with her trying to talk over him constantly.

2. "Amanda doesn't really seem to want to be on the show. She doesn't smile. She looks at the edge of the stage. She just seems miserable. I hope that she gets put out of her (and our) misery this week."

I have to wonder if she is regretting ever coming on the show. I would guess that she is not the sort of person who would embrace being selected as one of Evil Website #1's patsies. Being wildly lauded by the judges had add injury to insult for now the show can "pidgeonhole" her as the bluesy rocker. Personally, I thought that her performance was brilliant and exactly what I had expected from her.

3. Carly...this girl is missing something...she has a ton of talent but no "X-factor". This gal could be a wildly successful backup or studio singer.

4. Kristy Lee Sellout - Oh yeah! We gotta keep this girl around because we need a target for cannon practice! For the last two weeks, we had a blonde, straight-haired pop singer. This week, we get a light brown, curly-headed country singer! And Simon criticized Kady for not knowing who she is!? This, ladies and gentlemen, has redefined the Ultimate Idol Sellout! "I'm a horse trainer but I'll sell my horse to be on Idol...I love pop music but I'll switch to country to stay in the competition because Simon said so..." Hey, Kristi, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader tryouts are in May...you've already shown that you have the much-sought after lack-of-original personality and other "assets".

I thought the girls did alright last night. I do think the guys are much stronger. Brooke was by far my favorite and quite the stand out. I was concerned when I heard she was doing Pat Benetar. She didn't try to be Benatar which was exactly what she needed to do.

I agree with Shenova. Amanda was fantastic last night. And she gives me the same feeling that she doesn't want to be there. Being on Evil Website #1 is almost a nail in the coffin for a serious career.

Carly is good. But something about her...she's like Syeshia...something bothers me about both of these girls and I haven't quite put my finger on it.

Weakest singer of the night for me, was Kady. And I like Kady. She is quirky. I would much rather she move on than some others. (See Shenova's #4)

If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!

I guess I will be Mr. Blackwell for my recap:

Here is the problem I had with the girls tonight - the pants! For Asia'h, Carly, and Syesha, it looked like they raided the Three's Company 70s wardrobe. What is up with those high-waisted pants (or shorts for Syesha) with the big Mickey Mouse buttons on them? They were totally unflattering on all of three of the girls. Syesha looked like a granny since her boobs were practically touching her shorts! Carly just doesn't have the curves to pull off those pants. And Asia'h looked like she was wearing pregnancy pants. Terrible!

The worse offender of the night was Ramiele. The God-awful mini skirt, the sweater that looked like a hoodie, and the tiny belt that accentuated nothing, made her look like a reject from the Salvation Army. Those glasses that she loaned to Danny last night would have made the disaster complete.

Finally, the scarves. Four guys, Cookie, Castro, Dezzie, and Archie had them wrapped around their necks. Was it cold in the studio? Is this the new fashion for guys? Is this supposed to be a new thing for singers to save their throats and keep them warm? Dezzie had a short, but broad scarf around he neck so he looked even more like a poser.

As far as the singing goes, Amanda and Brooke were my number one faves. Brooke has really stepped it up a notch these past few weeks and could be a major dark horse. I would not be surprised to see Carly leave before her. Other than that, no one else really did anything too noteworthy. Kristy Lee was decent with her Washingtonian-based twang. And her belt really helped accentuate her, um, assets. I agree with Fredereek - if she goes sleezy, she'll go far in this competition. Further than Haley did last year.

I totally agree, Ben! Besides the bad pants, Asia'h's outfit looked like it had been picked out by someone who was colorblind.

AI definately needs a new wardrobe consultant.

I actually thought the girls did really well last night...not as good as some of the guys...but held their own. The only one that proved she doesn't deserve to move on was Kady. She doesn't know who she is yet and so she comes off as uncomfortable and disconnected...maybe why she hides behind her impersonations.

Top Two:

1)Amanda...she might not be a high voltage singer...but she's definitely a high voltage rocker...really like her.

2)Carly...love her folksiness...but love her personality even more...again not a kelly or carrie...but something different...a pleasantly vulnerable, easy to listen to, mellowed out, mature singer...

Should go home:

Kady...enough said.

Kristy should go but that country turn will keep her in a little longer. Which unfortunately leaves me to think Ramiele and Syesha are in trouble because all the others are sure bets. If the asian vote comes through for Ramiele then Syesha is out. She just doesn't stand out. She'll be this year's Stephanie Edwards...a good singer that was neither the best or the worst...a position that doesn't bode well on American Idol.

No doubt. Ramiele had bad colors on too. It's like they were trying to do a tribute to bad 80s colors and then gave up.

Okay, I went to a therapist, brought on by being constantly reminded by the hall monitors, MYMYMY Sharona and Queeneth Curlioa, of my wee Willy baiaes. Yep, I am a changed man, indeed. Last night I went the progressive congitive theraputic steps suggested and sat down to enjoy the show in "wee-willie-less-state".

Random observations:

Kady was singing, what a body, if she would wear a low cut dress and get all pouty, she could own Hollyweird.

Kristy Lee, was singing, OMG if "Felicity" was tall with enormous gyros and didn't have that fool Ben and that other fool Noel, she could have me and I could watch her dance and sing, and we could go horseback riding on loaner horses and...................

Brooke, when her husband tragicly dies from an all night choirs contests, she and I will marry and with that sexy voice I can have a younger blonder Carly and we could have our bed suspended between four golden harps and we.............

Well as you can see, it is all working out now, and I must say I do feel better. My wee-Willie thinking is a thing of the past, right Froggie????

I think Amanda was 100% better than the last weeks of course I don't know that she could get any worse in comparision with previous weeks. But last night I liked her.

I wonder if her looking down is shyness with camera instead of the fact that she really doesn't want to be there. Could be either one, maybe she doesn't like the spotlight. ??????

well done madam curlio - as usual.

slaughter being the optimum word....what a pack of cows!

what heffer was there to choose from really?

our black & white holsteins friesians award goes to amanda. she comes with a 'real deal' stamp of approval and a muso club certificate. just a little fire cracker rocker which makes her tops as 'some like it hot'. glad we got to see some of 'it' before she gets booted.

our maine anjou award goes out to brooke white. she is awarded the most like to succeed stamp as well as the wait and see seal of approval. though by conventional standards she does not have enough meat on her cattle bones we believe that her 'true colors' hold up well.

there are no win, place or show awards as there were not enough qualified contestants to hold a competition.

Ben, you obvious need to stop judging people on style. The 80s are a horrible time for fashion so people are trying to match it. Judge people on their singing, not how they dress.
