American Idol picks a Top 12 curlio
 2008-03-06 21:30:36
Television The Top 12 were revealed on American Idol tonight, as two guys and two girls left the show. Next week we'll move to the bigger stage with a bigger audience. Also next week the Top 12 will be forced to deal with the Lennon-McCartney songbook, which features a lot of melody and requires actual singing talent. I can't wait to see how terrible the performances are! But first we have to deal with tonight, so onward we go!

First up we were treated to a performance by last season's runner-up, Blake Lewis. He performed his song "How Many Words" which features his beatboxing skills. I'm not too fond of the song. He seemed to have pitch problems as well. Ryan asked Blake if he had any advice. Blake told the finalists to stay true to themselves and listen to the good criticism of the judges. Ryan then pointed out Chris Sligh as part of the band.

Ryan Seacrest said that there were 36 million votes for the guys and girls this week. He then introduced the judges and congratulated Paula Abdul on her song being number one on iTunes. Ryan asked Simon Cowell if he wants to congratulate Paula. Simon said he just can't bring himself to do it. Then upon prodding, gave her a "well done well done."

A recap of the guys leads to the first three guys being admitted to the Top 12. David Cook, David Archuleta and Jason Castro were all given the coveted silver stools. Honestly there aren't any surprises there, did anyone actually expect any of those three to leave? Maybe some people wished it, but we all knew they were Top 12 bound.

Next up are the girls, with a recap of how they performed yesterday. Brooke White is given the first silver stool, Syesha Mercado quickly joining her. Going home first for the night was Kady Malloy, though that was no great surprise either. She sang "Who Wants to Live Forever" again and it was horrible compared to yesterday.

Ryan announces that starting next week they will open the phone lines to talk to people on air during the results show. I'm hoping they'll have a slightly bigger tape delay because I'm hearing people shouting into the phone line "Evil Website #1!"

We bounced back for more guys results then. David Hernandez overcame his scandal to land in the Top 12. He was joined by Michael Johns on the silver stools. The first guy to go home was no great shock either. Luke Menard suffered from the vanilla sphere issue. Paula told him that this is the first day of the rest of his career (yeah as a garbage collector maybe). He performed Wham's "Wake Me Up (Before You Go-Go)"

Off to the girls for more Top 12 revelations. Earning their silver stools were Ramiele Malubay, Carly Smithson and Amanda Overmyer. That leaves Kristy Lee Cook and Asia'h Epperson to wonder during the break which one of them will go on and which one of them will leave. Randy Jackson and Simon agree that Asia'h will be the one leaving. Paula says that they are both stars already. Kristy gets the stool while Asia'h gets to go home. Ryan gives her the choice of whether or not she wants to sing her song. Asia'h performs "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" one more time.

Finally we were down to the last elimination. Either Chikezie would be leaving or Danny Noriega would leave. Chikezie gets the silver stool, while Danny leaves us. Ramiele was devastated by the news. Randy said it was tough, but everyone should be proud they made it this far. Then Danny gave another spirited performance of "Tainted Love."

So was anyone surprised by the Top 12 or the 4 that left us tonight? If so, who surprised you and why?

I think the problem with Chikezie, and for black, male singers on this show the past few years, is that they are not that popular in Top 40 right now. Usher, Chris Brown, Mario, and Ne Yo, are these effeminate, dancer-singers in the vein of Justin Timberlake. Chikezie fits that old school manly man soul singer that just isn't popular these days. (I think that is why Reuben was never successful; they turned his old school style in this current R&B sound and it never worked. His first album was crap and sounded nothing like what he did on AI.) Ever since Anwar finished sixth in Season 4, only two black males have made it into the Top 12 - Brandon Rogers and Chikeze. Only four have made it in the Top 24 (4 out of 36 guys). I guess that AI and America are looking for the diva singer and forgetting about the males.

Now, I don't know why there are folks seething in hatred for Chikezie. He is a really good singer. Is it the style? Would people be equally mad if a really good bluegrass or opera singer was on the show? I don't know and I don't understand it. Like I said, no one has really had a solid argument as to why he should leave.

What songs are people going to perform next week? My thoughts are below. I'm a big Beatles fan, but am not 100% that all of these songs below were written by Lennon/McCartney. I wish the theme was Beatles songs because I know someone would be able to blow away "Something". "Here Comes the Sun" would be great too. (Both written by George.)

Amanda - The Ballad of John and Yoko (it fits, she could mumble through it and scream out "Christ, you know it ain't easy!") or Get Back

Archie - Hey Jude or Michelle

Brooke - Across the Universe or I'll Follow the Sun

Carly - While My Guitar Gently Weeps (A subdued version) or In My Life

Castro - Yesterday or Norwegian Wood (either with guitar)

Chikezie - Let It Be ("Something" would be great for him)

Cookie - Revolution or Come Together

Dezzie - And I Love Her (it fits his style, plus for PR purposes)

Kristy Lee - Here, There, and Everywhere or Ticket to Ride (a la Karen Carpenter, but with a twang)

Michael - Day Tripper or Back in the USSR

Ramiele - Help! (nothing fits for her)

Syesha - Got to Get You Into My Life (not much fits for her either, but this would be solid and upbeat and show her range)

w: He does what he does great. I'm sorry that folks seem only to like thug slop, from black males these day. It won't last, but with everyone harping about fairness and quality, he gets overlooked somehow. If he won, and he has the pipes, their is a small market but he is not an "american idol", even though he is nicer more talented and surely has some form of work ethic, unlike Ruben S.

guest: Kady is just too generic, as is Kristy Lee Cook.

w: slapping fingers, howling stomach (my Indian name).
On your planet, if this is generic womankind, could I have a few castoffs, you know, to keep around for fun.

Toadie: u know shenova i love me some soul singing. more to the point music helps me survive on any given day. no cheesy for me cause he is an 'act'. how about a little soul from the soul?

nite.

W: My lovely frogetta! Do you even know a black person, did you have any in Chocolatesville. I actually know a few zillion and not all are mindless thugs, some actually have a style and appreciate a certain black refinement, and no I not talking about waiters at your club. LOL

Simon: Kristy Lee, your problem is that your forgetable!

w: Simon, you pumped up glob of self-important fungus.
In your wildest dreams you will never have a person like Kristy Lee in your life on any level, she can't be bought, and would slap you back to bitchville if you were that rude to her in real life. I wouldn't trust your to take out my garbage.

Paula: mindless drivel, mindless drivel.......to infinity and beyond.

w: You have faked it your whole life and the uneven and seemingly random crap you spew out of your mouth is just unsubstantial. No wonder you are so unhappy with yourself. You don't have to jabber for folks to know you are alive.

Randy: Dog, pitch, Whitney, Journey, Dog, Dog, pound......

w: Randy you are so cool, you would have been a good cook if you could at some point do the physical aspects of getting into the Army. The boys in the chow like really like being in the dog pound. I think the fact that crap you spew is so accepted by the show is condesending on their part to a black male as, having lsuch low expectation for his intelligence.

I feel better now. Willy -oops-

Wow, I thought it was a great show and the right four did go home, doing Beatles songs will expose half of the 12 as average singers, still waiting for Michael Johns to impress me, will someone pick a song for him!!

I'll play.

Amanda - "Helter Skelter"

Archie - "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" or "She Loves You", some earlier, innocent Beatles piece or "Twist and Shout"

Brooke - "The Long and Winding Road"

Carly - she's going to be who gets "Yesterday" or "Let it Be"...my bet is "Let it Be" and let her oversing it...

Castro - "Norwegian Wood", "Michelle" or "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (more evil humor)

Chikezie - "Let It Be" ("Something" would be great for him) - I agree with Ben but I'd guess he actually going to get something else. How about "Lady MaDonna"?

Cookie - "Revolution", "Help!", or "Magical Mystery Tour"

Dezzie - "Yesterday" or "Get Back" (more evil humor)

Kristy Lee - "Baby, You Can Drive My Car" or "All My Lovin'" (you expect me to take her seriously?)

Michael - "Ticket to Ride" or "Hard Day's Night" or "I am the Walrus"

Ramiele - "Yellow Submarine" or "Octopus's Garden" (this was written by George)

Syesha - "Hey, Jude!"

Dusty was heartbroken when Kady left. He was terrified that the last cute female (Kristy Lee) would leave too last night. I'm not sure he would have been able to stand it.

Sheesh. I'm glad Danny went home. Someone who doesn't care what the judges think isn't likely to care what the fans think anyway.

I think Brook is the best of the girls, and I like the Davids on the guys side.

My prediction for this season is that if David Cook starts rockifying the songs he chooses, Curlio will lose patience by week 4 and dub him the "new Daughtry".

One number - 45 (as in years of age).

If you watched her Bravo series "Hey, Paula!", she showed that she has become a horrific insomniac, often sleeping as little as 3 hours in a three day period. The less sleep, the more incoherent.

Ten years ago, I would have been skeptical of the notion. But there is reason that I know what every cable channel broadcasts at 3, 4, 5, and 6am....Ambien often ain't a cure.
