American Idol Top 12 takes on Lennon-McCartney

The Top 12 on American Idol took on John Lennon and Paul McCartney this week. While many people were worried that the finalists would murder some of the best songs in the world, they actually did a rather good job of showing off their talent. Perhaps they might yet earn that "Best Top 12" hype.
Ryan Seacrest naturally started off by showing off the new set. The band is up above all the action now in their own little "penthouse." Ryan also introduces the judges, and while doing so rags on Simon Cowell for his partially open shirt. Then we get the clip on tonight's theme. The theme is the Lennon-McCartney songbook, apparently everything they have written and not just the Beatles songs.
Ryan asked Randy Jackson why these songs have been so enduring. Randy said they are the greatest songs in history and will be around forever. Paula Abdul was asked how the Top 12 should play tonight, since it's so big. She said that these songs are full of melody and if they sing it straight it pays great tribute. But those who took risks better make it worth it. Ryan asked Simon about the difficulty level of these songs. Simon said it depends on which songs they choose, some are easier than others.
Syesha Mercado was up first. She picked "Got To Get You Into My Life" because she wants to show more of her personality. It sounded pitchy in spots and karaoke. Randy thought it was a nice arrangement but started off rough. In the end it was just alright. Paula also noted that Syesha started off pitch but worked it out midway through. Simon thought it was better than alright, that it was a great choice of song and much better than last week. He noted that she looked very nervous.
Chikezie was up next. Ryan talked to him before he performed about his former job as a security guy at LAX airport. Chikezie said that because the other guards knew he auditioned for American Idol they made sure he got Paula's bags to go through. Ryan also asked him about last week, Chikezie felt like he was going home. He picked "She's a Woman" and decided to put his own funk on it. It was an excellent performance and I loved what he did with it. Randy was entertained and loved the arrangement and the falsetto. Paula said the reward paid off in this case. Simon agrees with Randy and Paula. He loved that Chikezie in a week changed and took control of the stage. He also liked the unique version of the song.
Ramiele Malubay is from Florida as well and works at a sushi place. She chose "In My Life." It's a very sweet song, a little boring but the best vocal I've heard from her to date. She was in tune and on pitch. It was actually pleasant to listen to this performance. Randy thought it was pretty but pretty boring. Paula started with the "you look lovely" which is never good news. She thinks that Ramiele is holding back, her voice lets her go so many places and she needs to take advantage of it. Simon was bored to tears through the whole thing. The dreary song choice did nothing for her and was forgettable and boring. He expects more from her.
Jason Castro is from Texas and attends Texas A&M as a music major . He chose "If I Fell" because he relates to the song. It was a beautiful song and I really love his voice. I could feel the emotion coming from him. Randy liked it but didn't love it. He didn't feel the emotion from it. Paula had her own opinion this week *gasp* and disagreed with Randy. She thought that it was full of emotion and the audience feels Jason's emotion. Simon thought that he was incredible last week but this week was boring. He agrees that Jason is unique though and will get through this week. I'm wondering if getting the emotion from it is a girl thing that the guys just missed out on or something?
Carly Smithson talked to Ryan about moving into the American Idol apartments. Her roommate is Amanda and they appear to be having fun. Carly lives in San Diego now, but all her family lives in Ireland. She choose "Come Together" to perform because she does the song almost every week. She performed the song very well and seemed very comfortable. Randy said he loved that she was so strong and confident with not a note out of tune. Paula felt like she was watching a star. Simon said that she has picked the wrong song week after week until now. It reminded him of how Kelly Clarkson stood out during Season 1.
David Cook was a bartender back in his former life. He also played shows there from time to time. He picked "Eleanor Rigby" and decided not to play guitar because it would be overkill. I'm not a big fan of the song, but he did a pretty good version of it. Randy said that there were pitch problems at the beginning, but he rocked the chorus. Paula said that there is more than one horse in this race and loves seeing David as a frontman. Simon thought it was brilliant. He thinks that if the show remains a talent competition rather than a popularity contest David could win.
Brooke White is from Arizona but moved to LA to work on her music career. She picked "Let It Be" to perform because she loves the story. I don't think this was her best performance, but it was solid. I think the piano distracted her from just singing the song. Randy didn't think it was her strongest performance but it was a very heartfelt one. Paula says that Brooke's niche is picking songs where they can feel her heart. Simon again thought it was one of the best performances of the night. He thinks it was believable and a brilliant song choice.
David Hernandez is from Arizona where he worked in a pizza bistro. He doesn't mention his other job(s). He picked "I Saw Her Standing There" because it's one of his favorite songs. I didn't like his voice on this one. I think he was forgettable and karaoke. Randy felt like it was overdone. Paula agreed it was overdone. Simon thought it was corny verging on desperate. He felt it was very "rabbit in the headlights." Randy corrected him that it's "deer" not "rabbit."
Ryan talked to Amanda Overmyer about what they do behind the scenes. She said they've had a lot of photo shoots and interviews. As for right before they perform, everyone does something different. Amanda picked "You Can't Do That" to perform. She had never heard the song before this week but she is putting her own Amanda spin on the song and spin it up. I didn't hate her as much as usual this week, but I didn't like it either. It was okay. Randy said she took a Beatles song and brought it to a Southern bar. Paula noted that Amanda was smiling and having fun. She is blown away by her. Simon didn't think it was as good as last week, and understood only about 30% of what she sang. He thought it was shouty. But he does like that Amanda is in the competition because she's a breath of fresh air.
Michael Johns - from Australia, lived in Georgia for 6 years and LA for 4 years, does some tennis coaching, and does whatever he can to keep music in his life. This music is important to him as he discovered L-M at 10 and "Across the Universe" helped him through a painful family experience. I know that Michael isn't the best vocalist in the show but I think it was one of his better performances. Randy didn't think it was his best as he keeps waiting for something big. Paula disagreed with Randy saying it takes inner strength to stand center stage but sing brilliantly. Simon agrees with Randy, saying that Michael should have done what Carly did. He thought it was a bit monotonous, but he is still a fan, just frustrated that we haven't heard what Michael is capable of doing.
Kristy Lee Cook comes from a very musical family. She decided to pick "8 Days a Week" and change it into a country song. She just hopes that Simon likes the risk. The arrangement was a jumbled mess. Her vocals were okay, but the song just sounds terrible like she did it. Randy liked the idea but felt that she was trying to force too much into it. It was just half and half for him. Paula didn't enjoy it and told her not to take what they say to heart too much as she needs to do her own thing. Simon thought it was horrendous. He said it was a brave but foolish thing to do, and that song doesn't work in that style.
David Archuleta didn't really like jazz or oldies when he was little so he was worried. But he is familiar with the Stevie Wonder version of "We Can Work It Out" so that's what he picked to do. I prefer him serious rather than this "fun" side of him. It just didn't work for me. Randy didn't think it was his vibe, that it felt forced and didn't work. Paula told David not to let it show on his face when he makes a mistake, just keep on going. Simon said that if he treats everyone fairly he would have to say that David stumbled over his lyrics, shouldn't have done the Stevie version and was his weakest performance so far.
My Rankings from Top to Bottom:
1 Jason Castro with a 10, love his voice and what he did with the song.
2 Chikezie, surprising with a 9. He finally showed that he actually belongs in the Top 12!
3 Carly Smithson with an 8. Carly is finally living up to her hype, lets see if she can keep it up?
4 Michael Johns with an 8. The judges may not have liked it, but he was great.
5 David Cook with a 7.5. Even with a song I'm not fond of he performed brilliantly.
6 Brooke White with a 7. Not her best, but emotions come through the TV screen
7 Ramiele Malubay with a surprisingly above average performance at 7. She actually can sing in tune! Who would have thought?
8 David Archuleta with a 6. Even his worst performance to date is still above average.
9 David Hernandez with a 5.5. Karaoke and forgettable
10 Syesha Mercado with 5. Again, karaoke and forgettable.
11 Amanda Overmyer with a 4. She's not at the bottom?
12 Kristy Lee Cook with a 3. Oh yeah, that's why Amanda's not at the bottom. Someone else stunk more. I'm betting for a Kristy disappearance tomorrow.

My quick thoughts:
Syesha - I predicted correctly that she was going to sing this song. Too bad she didn't do much with it. She, like Archie, followed the formula of doing another person's rendition of the song and it failed tonight.
Chikezie - best stage performance of the night. He really brought it up a notch and reminded me of why he is one of my faves. The bluegrass/rock thing was awesome and his arrangement, if he did it himself, made up for the big mess of an arrangement he did during the Top 24 week.
Ramiele - Simon heard what I told my wife and quoted me verbatim. Bored to tears. Ramiele is going to be the contestant that stays around a few weeks too long. When Castro or Archie or Cookie goes home and Ramiele remains, you will see a lot of pissed off people.
Castro - It was OK. Nothing big. Pretty safe. Good enough to get him to another week.
Carly - If Celine did "Come Together" in her Vegas show, it would look like Carly's performance. Celine should never ever sing "Come Together". Great vocals. Wrong personality.
Cookie - I didn't think the lyrics matched the rhythm and sounded like some 90's angst song. That being said, it was the most radio-friendly song of the night. Cookie is Daughtry Jr. at this point. And turning songs into rock tunes every week will soon get redundant.
Brooke - I really like Brooke and thought she did her Tori Amos on a piano thing tonight (versus her Tori Amos on a guitar performances in the past). She has to be careful that she doesn't get stuck in this weepy, emotional cliche and may have to break out of that mold before she gets boring.
Herbie - Go home. That was a giant mess.
Amanda - Couldn't understand half of what she was saying. Don't think that matters too much. The song was still good and she'll stick around for another week.
Michael - I already forgot his performance. Simon is right, he is not living up to his expectations.
Kristy Lee - She should be the one going home this week, but she gets a pass for her looks. I learn on the reality show "Gone Country" that runs will get you nowhere in country music. Kristy Lee proved that she is no authentic country singer tonight.
Archie - Dude mess up big time with those botched up lyrics. Yet the judges didn't crucify him like they did Brandon last year when he only botched up one line. Archie mess up three times and killed the performance. He showed his age and maturity there, but he'll get a pass because he is Archie. I'm beginning to tire of Archie.
Overall, the show was pretty solid. Liked the new stage. I thought the performers did the McCartney/Lennon songbook right. I'm glad that no one was allowed to sing Yesterday. Perhaps they are saving it for the final song in their tacky montage that they will do tomorrow.
Bottom Three - Kristy Lee, Herbie, Ramiele
Next Three - Syesha, Archie, Michael
Next Three - Castro, Amanda, Brooke
Top Three - Carly, Cookie, Chikezie is number 1 tonight.

is this years competition going to be a fight to the finish or what?
i though cheesy was adorable. i enjoyed his performance and thought he did an ok job. i am willing to re-consider based on this performance alone.
my ranking goes something like this..
1. shared between cookie & amanda
2. shared between carly & brook with an 'e'
3. goes to castro cause he is friggen adorable though i concede that if this ends up being only a singing competition - and not a talent/star quality one - he will never make it.
4. a two way started to suck donkey dingle goes to archie and johns.
5. an absolutely sucked donkey dingle gets pinned on cook, hernandez & yes. ouch.

David Archie is really pissing me off with his breathing and liplicking. His ears and nose are HUUGE. He kinda reminds me of Melinda something from last season. He'll probably come in third-ish, if history repeats itself. I'm a CASTRONAUT. =)

I think the only reason Kristy Lee Cook is on is because of her 12 boys fanbase. I really hope she gets voted off because shes so boring and blah. No one needs another country idol. The theme is Beatles, not country songs.
Syesha was boring.
As was Hernandez. Its pretty funny he only mentioned one job though. I bet everyone was thinking about his other "job". STING!
Its probably just me but I didn't really like Chikezies bluegrassy vibe at the beginning. I still think he's safe though.
Jason was good but kinda boring. He's still unique. He's such a hippie. A better one than that Taylor Hicks guy. Castros my favourite.
Ramiele was kinda boring. I think her pouting might get her through the week but theres no guarantee. Risky. She does have a loyal fanbase.
Carly and Brooke was good. I was rooting for them at the very beginning.
David Cook was ok. I dont like his hairline though. I kind of always focus on it. Like Blake Lewis's nose. Sorry 15 year old girls.
I agree Amanda was kinda shouty. Michael Johns is ok, but kind of forgettable.
David Archeluta was so dissappointing. I'm 99% sure he's safe though. Doing the Stevie Wonder version was a big mistake. I'm not sure if saying he wasn't a fan off old music was an advantage either.
I think Kristy might be going home, and possibly Michael and Hernandez in the bottom 2.
P.s. I think this is the most diverse top 12. Two accents and a Filipina, as well as more heavier singers (Amanda and Cook).
I hate it when people think anything heavier than Britney Spears is rock though. What an insult.
Pretty good episode, but I think it'll get better as we move on.

2) Brooke
3) Chekezie
4) Kridsy Lee Cook (sorry I thought she did great)
5) Jason Castro
6) Michael Johns
7) Amanda (it pains me not to put her in bottom)
8) Ramiele
9) Syesha
10) David Archuletta (based on tonight he was the worse)

Carly was the best tonight. Kady was the worst.
Brooke White, Amanda Overmeyer, Chikeze, David Cook, Jason Castro. Michael Johns, all good.
The performances of David Hernandez, David Archuleta. Syesha and Ramilie I could do without, although Ramile and Archuleta both have great voices.

Hi all - for me, the Ryan/Simon banter is getting so old, and think it's time to move on to something more entertaining, or perhaps, gulp.. focus on the singers??
I'm a Jason fan, love his style. I also like Brooke, and loved her Let it Be - (clap clap)
I admit that Chickieze had a great performance tonight, and I might like David Cook better if he washed his hair. It's a huge distraction to me!
I have never liked Ramiele.. and think it will be her, Kristy, or David H. who leave tomorrow.

I'm pretty excited about this season now...very good show...I can see the title going to about 5 or 6 people right now: Carly, Brooke, Michael, Castro, Cookie, or Archie...that's a huge field...LOVIN IT!!!
Top Three:
1) Carly...now I see what all the fuss was about...wow...
2) Chikezie...who knew he had it in him...awesome...
3) Cookie or Amanda...I am really liking the two rockers this season...
Bottom Three:
10) Archie...it was like torture listening to one of my fav messing up his lines...I had to hide under a blanket and pretend it wasn't happening...
11) Hernandez...never understood the buzz with this one...he's always been "crusie ship" for me...
12) Kristy...was not happy she took Asiah's spot...but was hoping she would prove she belonged...and she failed miserably...now I'm even more mad she took my girl's spot in the top 12!!! GRRR!!!

1. Gotta be Jason Castro. I'm sorry folks. His style is refreshing, he is sexy and charismatic, and we could really use a fresh hippy/islander type in the industry. I think, from a female standpoint we've been waiting for someone like him to come along. He may not be the best vocalist, but what he brings to the stage is so much more than that.
2. Carly. Outstanding performance. Loved her last week too.
3. Brooke. That was a perfect song for her. Very moving.
Bottom 3
3. Michael Johns. That was a very bad song choice for his voice type.
2. Amanda Overmeyer. She is just the same week after week. It was refreshing in the 60's and 70's because female rockers were new, but she's very onedimensional. It gets old very quickly.
1. Kristy. Do I even need to say why? The song was rushed, the style was completely incongruent with the music, and she slaughtered it.

1. Chekezie. He gets the top spot with the "most unexpected" and "most improved" points.
2. Carly. Spot on and great performance.
3. Brooke. The song was too big for her, but she really connected and made it work.
4. Castro. Love his style. It just seemed a little safe.
5. Cookie: His shtick is getting old. It is the same arrangement every week.
6. Michael Johns. Have you noticed Randy says every week "I don't think that was your best performance, but...." That's because his best performance was way back in Hollywood Week and he has been pretty mediocre ever since.
7. Syesha. What did she sing again?
8. Ramiele. Just old fashioned and boring.
9. Amanda. She's great when she can do her bluesy growl, but she can't do the melody. I think she has been way overpraised two weeks in a row -- and I was a fan originally.
10. Dezzie. Too desperate. I kept expecting him to take off the vest and toss it into the crowd.
11. Kristy. There is a difference between "Country" and "Hoe Down." And was it just me or did anyone else think the band was speeding up just to get through that abomination of an arrangement?
12. Archie. Just unforgivable at this point in the competition.
So overall, two performers knocked it out of the park. Two were solid performances and the rest were mediocre at best.
Archie will probably coast through on the goodwill he has gotten from previous weeks. It will probably be Kristy or Amanda going home, though I think only Castro, Brooke, Chekezie, and Carly are really safe.

Wow, it isn't even midnight yet and we already have over a dozen responses. I guess AI is rolling again!
First, a rant. Did everyone else read that out of 188 L-M songs, they only allowed the Top 12 to choose from 25 songs?!? That's ridiculous! I'm sure that "Revolution" and similar weren't on the list...for that matter, I'm sure that "Yesterday" wasn't there, either. I can't figure out why "Let It Be" was an option.
As usual, Brother Ben and I mostly share musical ears and opinions: ben1974 said:
Syesha - I predicted correctly that she was going to sing this song. Too bad she didn't do much with it.
Karaoke. My prediction - she's going home although there are considerably worse singers in this competition. ben1974 said:
Chikezie - best stage performance of the night. He really brought it up a notch and reminded me of why he is one of my faves. The bluegrass/rock thing was awesome
You betcha. This performance even upgraded Toad's opinion of "cheese".
Ramiele -~snore~ As karaoke as Syesha but she has her own built-in fan base.
Castro - I like his voice, his performance was okay (but nothing compared to last week) and should put him through to the next round...
Castro is already starting to wear on me as one-dimensional. ben1974 made the accurate analysis:
Carly - If Celine did "Come Together" in her Vegas show, it would look like Carly's performance. Celine should never ever sing "Come Together". Great vocals. Wrong personality.
Yes, this was the sentiment I was trying to express, Ben, you are absolutely right on both points. Best vocals of the night but the wrong personality.
I will say that I am softening towards Carly and at least saw some spark of why the judges love her. Now, if Amanda could teach Carly a thing or two about performing on stage, it would be a good thing for everyone. ben1974 also accurately stated:
Cookie - I didn't think the lyrics matched the rhythm and sounded like some 90's angst song. That being said, it was the most radio-friendly song of the night.
Agreed! The verses could have strongly used "less is more", the lyrics are such powerful storytelling that putting the angst vibe on them made them lose their punch. On the other hand, I thought that the chorus was really good and held up to the angst vibe well.
Brooke - I must confess a prejudice. As a preteen/early teen, I had Beatles and McCartney and Wings posters all over my bedroom. I had several Wings t-shirts. Only ONE person sits and plays the piano and sings "Let it Be", the rest are but pale imitations. This remains McCartney's signature song. This is THE song that he used to close the show at the Concert for NY City, Live 8, and virtually every other charitable concert that he has played or ever will play. What was it doing on the AI song list?
Back to Brooke - I was waiting for Simon's "this doesn't hold up to the original", but alas, he clearly has a thing for Brooke. I will give her a "pretty good" for her attempt.
Dezzie - If Syesha doesn't go home, it will be him. That was awful. Bottom Three.
Amanda - I love watching this girl on stage and I can't figure out why... she is so not my usual musical taste. Even when she sucked (for some reason I still like her after she butchered my favorite Kansas song), she still commanded the stage. I really liked her spin on an otherwise boring and innocuous Beatles song. ben1974 and others said:
Michael - Simon is right, he is not living up to his expectations.
Yep, yep, yep. However, this performance at least ranked as mediocre, which is better than I have ranked his last two performances. ben1974 said:
Kristy Lee - She should be the one going home this week, but she gets a pass for her looks...Kristy Lee proved that she is no authentic country singer tonight.
Archie - Dude mess up big time with those botched up lyrics. Yet the judges didn't crucify him like they did Brandon last year when he only botched up one line. Archie mess up three times and killed the performance. He showed his age and maturity there, but he'll get a pass because he is Archie.
Right on both counts. Both joined Dezzie in my Bottom Three.
Archie was particularly irritating. First, this kid won Star Search Jr. and knew songs like "And I'm Telling You..." long before "Dreamgirls" was hot. How can he not know any L-M songs? Has he lived in a cave? Next, he was on SSJr., of ALL the AI performers he is the one that SHOULD have known to cover up forgetting lyrics and not make faces everytime he screwed up. He has fallen out of my "respectable" opinion.
I agree that the performances tonight were generally better than expected. I am curious to see what next week will bring!

You mean Kristy Lee Sellout, right? Two weeks ago, straight blonde-haired pop singer; last week, curly-headed light brown-haired contemporary country singer; this week, straight blonde-haired bad county fair singer. Paula couldn't even tell her that she looked good tonight! UGH! Who thought that a silver tank top was a good wardrobe idea? AI has GOT to get a new wardrobe consultant, this is two weeks in a row that the girls generally didn't look good (except Amanda...LOVED her outfit!)
When Paula says she "didn't get" a performance, you know it REALLY sucked!

Brooke is the only on the show who I see as a real artist. Nobody else even comes close!

Archuleta is really in serious position of getting voted off the competion, sorry last night's voting was supposed to be based on that day's performance not counting the past or else we should just vote one time to declare the true winner rather than a weekly competition.

Hi all - for me, the Ryan/Simon banter is getting so old, and think it's time to move on to something more entertaining, or perhaps, gulp.. focus on the singers??
Agreed! you'll notice no mention of it at all in my recap because I'm so sick of it. Just get to the make-up sex already! Make it a threesome and throw Paula in while you're at it so we can all move along.

Archie is in the inauspicious location of the BOTTOM performance because he forgot all kinds of words. You can't "watermelon" your way through parts of a song and wind up anywhere but the bottom.
My wife and I like Cookie and Brooke.
If Cook is going to do the Daughtry thing and rock up the performances every week, I personally think the producers are going to encourage it. It worked out very multi-platinum blippin' well last time.

It's a been a long time since an AI performance seriously hurt my ears, but Kristy Lee Cook's definitely did. The music was too fast and tinny and though she tried, Cook couldn't keep up with the musice and wavered between being behind the bad and ahead of the band. The dissonance was painful.
On Jason Castro, I've been thinking the same thing - that there is a male-female disconnect. Obviously not 100%, but I'd say it's marked. Me and my friends all want Jason Castro bad. Simon said it sounded as if he were singing at midnight in a bedroom. That may be true, but I bet an awful lot of females were thinking they'd like to be in that bedroom. I like his voice and style as well. He is utterly charming.
David Cook has a good voice and the arrangement was enjoyable. If I listen to him without looking at him, I like him a lot. I have a hard time looking at him - that hair just has to go. Even if it's the combover it looks like, it's hard to imagine that anything could be worse than what he's got going.
Chikeze Carly and Amanda I've been very unenthusiastic about, but this week enjoyed their performance and energy.
David Archuleta. Good voice but he's really just too young and immature. I think his problems tonight stemmed from that. The best singers have live experiences that are reflected in their vocals. He has a terrific voice, but he needs to grow up fast if he's going to pull this off.
Michael Johns, Ramiele Malubay, and Syesna Mercado were boring.
Brooke White did fine but then again, I love Let it Be. She is a good, though not terrible exciting, singer.
David Hernandez, meh. He's a compulsive overactor. Can he get it under control? who knows. And for that matter, who cares? But he really needs to make some big changes in his performance style if he is giong to win.
So who's going home? I'm wishing and hoping and thinking and praying that it's Kristy Lee Cook, a woman who seems like a sweetheard, but who no longer belongs in the competition
