American Idol picks their touring 10. curlio
 2008-03-19 22:11:22
Television American Idol lost another finalist tonight, revealing the Top 10. As you know making the Top 10 is big, as the Top 10 get to go on the tour (and thus get a paycheck for a few extra weeks as well as the extra exposure). But naturally we have to draw out the whole thing before we find out what's happening.

Apparently a mere 60 minutes of result show is too short for American Idol. Tonight we get 62 minutes of American Idol, because 58 minutes of filler is just not enough, they need that full 60 minutes for the filler. Ryan Seacrest announces this year's mentors. We've got Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Neil Diamond to look forward to this season. Then Ryan pimps the songwriting contest and reveals some details. Let's hope we get a better winner this year. Poor Blake Lewis was doomed to failure last season with that load of bollocks.

Then we are treated to the group performance. There were issues of course, when the girls took over singing from the guys, Brooke White started, then was joined by Ramiele Malubay. The only problem was that Ramiele's lips were moving, but we still only heard Brooke's voice. Then the cameraman stumbled onstage. At the point I'm typing this, we're only 13 minutes into the show and it's not looking good for them technically.

After a recap of yesterday, we get to the meat of the show (which will still involve a ton of filler). Brooke White is in the Top 10. Carly Smithson however is in the bottom 3. Paula Abdul says America got it wrong. Hey Paula, I thought it was our choice, not yours. So how can we get it wrong anyhow? Go back to your pills! Randy Jackson said it is a tough song to sing that didn't let Carly show her power. David Archuleta and Michael Johns are both in the Top 10 as well.

To fill the extra time, we've got a clip not just of the Ford video, but how the Ford video was made. The idols had lots of fun, even if they were freezing. The clip is to the song "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and it's an old 50's style ufo movie thing. Overall it was cute, but too much filler.

Back to the results. David Cook is safe and headed for the tour. Kristy Lee Cook's loose and free look didn't keep her out of the bottom three though. Jason Castro and Ramiele Malubay are also headed out on the tour.

Then we get to the filler questions. We had a question for Simon Cowell from Cheryll Ann. She wants to know why he spends so much money on cars but nothing on clothes. Simon says it's a rude question, and implies that he looks terrible. He says that he doesn't have an ego and doesn't think about what he's going to wear in advance. Then Jessica asks Simon and Paula if they would film a sequel to the kiss scene from Season 2. Simon says he would because Paula is a good kisser. Mary asks Ramiele what the last song she downloaded. Ramiele says it was R. Kelly's "I'm a Flirt." Linda asks Michael Johns if his experience has been everything he thought it would be. Michael said it has been more stressful, since he apparently peaked in Hollywood. He says he'll get it back though.

Then we get a performance from the Pickle, Kellie Pickler. First up is a nice long video of what she's doing now and some of her funny stuff. She sings "Red High Heels." It's actually pretty good.

Now a pimp for Idol Gives Back, both this year and last year. This year's show is on April 9th. Last year there was 76 million raised, part of which went to Angola. We got a clip featuring Elliot Yamin and Fantasia Barrino traveling to Angola.

Then we were back for the results, Syesha Mercado was in the Top 10. That left either Amanda Overmyer or Chikezie to fill out the bottom three. There were chants in our living room of "Amanda Amanda Amanda" and to our delight, Amanda is in the bottom three WOOH!, while Chikezie heads for the tour.

Carly is the first to be safe. Simon says that America got it right for two weeks running now. Ryan then tells Kristy she is safe as cheers erupt in my home and the home of our own little Will (I'm guessing). Arrogance will NOT get you very far on American Idol, and Amanda's comments were just too arrogant to be acceptable to too many people. The most important factor in my happiness: Vote for the Worst. The website, despite their national press coverage, couldn't even manage to get their designated "worst" (and even I dispute that label) into the Top 10 and the tour. They might want to pick someone that people can stomach voting for (I suggest Kristy, men can vote for her and not use fingers).

Next week's idol, no matter what the theme, will be pure bliss.

WooHoo! Arrogant, rude, screaching, striped rocker chick is out! How dare she cut the others down by saying ballads are boring?
I'm SO glad she's gone.

Yeah, she was arrogant but she was unique. Too different for the generic AI viewers I suppose. She should try out for Rockstar or something.

I personally think Kristy might be in the bottom every week until she does something truly amazing.

I think the whole Castro thing will get old too. He's unique, but his voice doesn't compare with some others (like Archie and Carly). I still think he could make it to top 5 based on the vote by the female population.

The last song Ramiele downloaded was "I'm a Flirt"?!?! Wow. You don't have to tell the truth you know. My respect for her just went down a smidge. She's still in my top 5 though.

I still don't like Cookie that much. He just seems too poserish. Just cuz you have the hair and clothes doesn't make you a "rockstar". He's too Daughtryish for me.

Kristy Lee Cook might just get through this competition on her looks. She wont make it to the finale though. Unless some sort of miracle happens.

Brooke White is ok. Michael Johns is still kind of forgettable. Chikezie's average for me. I don't know why America picked him over Danny the spitfire. Syesha is blah.

My top 5:
David Archuleta, Brooke White, Carly Smithson, Ramiele, and Castro.

A more realistic top 5:
Archie, Cookie, Brooke, Jason and possibly Ramiele or Carly.

i thought carly was a sure shot but after today's bottom 3, i'm not so sure anymore.

I sorta thought Kristy would go, but for the male members (no pun intended) here at Curlio, I'm glad they can oogle another week.

I was surprised by Carly. Could it be the publicity from her former record deal is finally catching up to her?

Jason is still my favorite. I'll concede he may not be the strongest singer, but there is something about him...

I am hoping that Evil Website #2 is completely wrong. According to their statistically invalid numbers, every week this season Archie has literally doubled the votes of his competitors.

I will miss Amanda. Now, I can sleep through all of the show except for Cookie.

I agree that Kristy should have gone home! Now we will have to hear Simon insult her again next week!
The bottom 3 should have been Kristy, Syesha and Ramiele. I can't believe Amanda and Carly were in the bottom 3!
Amanda was unique, and I will miss her performances.
I also love watching David Cook perform.
It was great seeing Michael Johns be humble for the first time tonight, he appeared very worried he might not be in the top 10, and he fell to his knees when he made it! That made me like him.
Syesha and Ramiele are good singers but boring.
My top 5 are Archie, Cookie, Brooke, Jason and Carly.

I was sort of sad to see Amanda go too. She was unique. To me, some of them seem so kareoke.

I love the Beatles, but I am ready for some different kind of music. Do we know what next week's theme will be?

Why the heck would I support a position I don't share? You're welcome to disagree with me. You're welcome to like her. You're welcome to your own opinions here - THAT is a position I'll support. But that doesn't mean I'm not gonna go slightly hoarse screaming my joy.

Do I have to get Dusty to do a math thing to statistically prove them inaccurate? Their numbers hold no weight at all - they had 10 of the 11 people in the bottom 3. 10 of 11! AI has added more phone lines, which makes EW#2's stats even more weak. They are a joke!

I didn't really care for Amanda, but I thought Kristie should have gone before her. Amanda would have added some variety to the tour, and I thought AI lost a great opportunity to satisfy those fans who like that kind of music.

Carly in the botom three? No way! This is just AI's way of stirring up some controversy.

Ramielie has a great voice, but she does not use it very effectively. I closed my eyes while listening to her and Sayesha, and Sayesha conected with me more.

If Micheal Johns gives another mediocre performance I will be rooting for him to be the next to go. I am so tired of contestants who have so much talent and just not living up to the potential.

Now the show gets very interesting!!!

Well, I liked Amanda, and I'm sorry to see her go. I agree she wasn't a great singer, but she definitely was entertaining. Unlike Kristy, booooooring! Let's hope she's out next week, because that's all I can take of her.

Yes, you folks who are going to spend $50 to go see the Tour this summer, have fun watching dead weight Kristy Lee look like a corpse as she tries to work the stage. And by working the stage, I mean standing still, emoting with her eyes only, and wearing no support bra (but, she is standing still, so that is irrelevant). Check out that action from the nose bleed seats fellas! Amanda would have worked the stage, brought an upbeat song to the show and everyone would have appreciated her efforts. She would have entertained - for good or for bad - depending on whether you like her or not. That is my opinion at least.

One other note. Last week, I said that Kristy Lee should have sang "Here, There, and Everywhere". They did the song during the groupsing and I thought Kristy Lee actually did a great job with her part of the song. I need to be on that show as the Official Song Picker methinks!

Waiting for the real show to start...

Okay. I loved Amanda. I knew she would never win this show, but I thought she'd make top 8 at least. She was at least entertaining and fun to watch. You can tell she truly loves what she does. I'm so disappointed that dumb old Kristy is hanging around yet again. She's not good.

Also, I'm getting tired of Carly. I don't know what it is...maybe just the fact that there's so many out there like her. To me, there's nothing about her that's unique. Do I think she can sing? Yes. But do I think she should win? No. I'm much more into the ones who aren't so generic...the Brooke's, Castro's, Cookie's, etc.

Oh, and I hope Syesha goes home soon too. Can't stand her!

So our tragedy is your good luck. Satan.

Will!

“Yes Lord”, says Willy.

Well, I’ve waited a long time for your prayers. For a while there they were few and far between, my boy. Since I updated my flock to Human 2.1 with that new whole free will modification, well, I seem to have lost some of my sheep since then. I was curious to see if you’d come back to me.

“Lord, you know the ADD thing, I’m all over the place but I’m trying to be a good boy. It was many years ago when I came to you to speed up the really hot seventeen year old girls to their eighteenth birthday, and yes, of course I see the selfishness in that kind of thinking, with your grace, of course”, Willy replies.

Exactly my son, and, it is because of that progress I have answered your prayers. They were so gracefully sent to me and of such pure heart, and good intent, I think you are finally getting the hang of it. Remember, keyword, selflessness, it’s the real deal, kind of like “Plastics” to Dustin Hoffman in the Graduate, love movies, one of my better inventions, the free will deal does have it’s plusses.

“Oh, yeah, I meant to thank you for that, Lord. You know, ADD, again, but I know that is no an excuse just an explanation. I’m really trying, selflessness, selflessness, selflessness……..hmmm. Well, Lord that is going to take some pondering, I want to get it right. There is so much I just don’t understand”, says Willy. Oh, and “me too on the movies, good one”, added Willy.

Will, you have always been an, oh so many questions, kind of man, extremely logical and thought centric, I sense that a hint at my mystery might ease you guilt and concern over why and how I answered your prayers.

It’s okay to pray for the folks on American Idol, sure, any concerns of yours are an invention of mine, ha, ha, you folks have picked up on the fact that I “do” have a sense of humor. And, you know I am, everywhere, like the old chicken man radio bit, “he’s everywhere, he’s everywhere”, wow, a really good one.

Remember when you wanted Kellie Pickler to win Idol, and she didn’t and you kind of thought I was still steamed about the 17 year olds? Well, she is just busting open with love and grace, and plenty of shoes, ha, ha, and I can tell you, her heart is as full as if she did win idol. I really do look after the good one’s, remember the mystery deal, well if I gave away every secret then what would be the mystery, capice? Oops, not in Italy!

The deal with Amanda, I didn’t answer your prayer to save Kristy Lee, I took Amanda away from her misery, she was not happy and has used her free will to chose the path she needs, to learn what she needs to learn, everything is as it should be, her misery on the idol tour, and it’s subsequent effects would ungraciously move her far away from her immediate needs. Big Picture Will, Remember, Big Picture.

“I see”, Willy replied, and then asked, “I’m almost ashamed to ask, should the subject of women and their umm body parts, well okay, I’ll say it ta ta’s, should they be such a point of humor or criticism.”

Will, with Human 2.1, you have the tools to make what I give you into what you want to see, be it metaphorically or literally. She is a woman and she has breast, they are part of her femaleness, not all, just part, to be 2.1’ed anyway you want. Sadly, these days you make angels of devils and devils of angels and keep changing you minds. Before, 2.1 they were a way you feed your babies, now they are practically everything but that, free will again.

And, one more thing Will, praying for women’s breast to be perky is just not advisable, it is much better when they surprise you………………. G

No, No, No, No. I can run my own statistics, thank you. I will also point out that they are going to be increasingly irrelevant because they only attempt to (poorly) assess phone calls and not text messages.

What I am pointing out is that EVERY WEEK the top one out of 24, 20, 16, 12, 11 that has been predicted NOT to go home is Archie. Even assuming a 10-20% variance in their numbers, Archie pulling approximately twice the phone calls of anyone else.

I agree with Ben.

For this being the "best 24" and best blah, blah, blah...is it just me, or are they completely lacking a standout? By this time last season, Melinda had cemented herself as the best all-around professional voice (albeit one with limited commercial appeal), Sanjaya was just having fun even though he sucked, and Jordin and Blake brought different elements. This year is just so....generic. I'm already bored and that doesn't usually happen for another 4 or 5 weeks.

My favorite was Amanda, but I couldn't stand up and say "I'd buy a ticket to see her in concert" the way that I did for Melinda, Bo, and yes, even Daughtry.

NAAAAAHHHHH!!! You still have Kristy Lee Sellout!

Guess the themes - this will be easy:

Dolly Parton - Country Night

Andrew Lloyd Webber - Show Tunes (? I thought Simon banned Show Tunes after Season 4?). No one has the pipes this season to pull off Andrew Lloyd Webber songs, so I hope its not just his music

Neil Diamond - Oldies or his music

Mariah Carey - this ought to be a train wreck.

You're right, that was Season Three. You see how long that lasted...until they got JLo for Latin Week last year. In other words, Simon's bans usually last for about two seasons.

I read an article where Nigel said that they were also going to have a "Music from the Year that the Contestant was Born" theme again this year.

Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Neil Diamond...where is Queen when we need them?!? I swear this AI season is going to cure my insomnia!

Voting Groups for the Top 10...

Kristy Lee Cook? Dumb, deaf, old men thats who. Hillbillies, and possibly 12-14 year old boys who think she's eye-candy.

Jason Castro and David Archeluta? The girls, and their mothers. I personally think Castro is pretty cool. He looks like Tarzan with his dreads down. Its pretty funny. And he looks like John Travolta with them tied. I kid you not.

Ramiele? Filipino people, and guys like me who think she's hot. Okay, shes not the best singer and she is milking the whoel I'm 4''11 thing but still...

Brooke White? Other females and other guys. Joe Shmoes.

Chikezie? No Danny fan would vote for him (that counts out most of the female population). Danny would have been more interesting to watch every week.

Carly Smithson? People who realize talent (apparently there aren't many, which explains her being in the bottom 3 last week)

David Cook? The girls. I personally think he's a smug little poser, but he sings okay. He is milking the whole "Whee, I'm a rockstar and I play the gee-tar!" I predict he will start his own band once he is eliminated.

Syesha? Beats me. Her friends I guess. She's kind of boring.

Michael Johns? Who? I can never remember him. He sings ok too. His fanbase isn't nearly as huge as Archies and Castros.

For my peeps from the Houston Cronicle, Amanda telling interview!

"What kind of effect do you think the "rocker chick" tag had on your success?
Being my own personal style helped me as far as being the quintessential "rocker chick," I guess. But as far as the competition itself, I wouldn't say that it necessarily helped me. Young kids aren't going to relate to me as easily as they do the other ones.

Did singing first Tuesday night or your song choice (Back in the U.S.S.R.) have an effect on your being eliminated?
If it wasn't that song, it was going to be another song that sounded like me singing it. And you'll never hear me pissin' and whinin' that I was first or anything like that.

Are you disappointed to not make the Idol tour?
I'm not extremely disappointed that I am not doing the tour. The ultimate goal is to get my own. I think for it being an American Idol tour, they have the best group for it. I think I kind of stuck out. I didn't really fit in with it.

You seemed really serious every time you faced the judges. What was going through your head?
When I was done singing, I was done singing. When those judges would give their comments, I just wanted to be respectful and listen. But the comments weren't going to sway me one way or the other as far as what I was going to do.

The objective of being on the show was just to go out there and show America me -- perform like me, look like me and see how well it would take. The comments of the judges were based more on the idea of trying to win. I just had a different agenda.
What were your favorite -- and least favorite -- performances?

The two that I did on the big stage were both equally my favorite, just because I was more in my element there with the crowd in front of me and everything.
My least favorite one would have been -- all the group numbers we had to do. (Laughs.)

So much has been made about this season's diverse crop of singers, but some of the most unique personalities have gone home early. Does Idol really benefit distinct voices?
It gives us that platform to start from and get exposure -- the biggest exposure we could ever get. As far as winning it, you just have to look at the demographics of the voters and the people watching American Idol vs. the demographics of your particular genre. They may not necessarily correlate.

Michael Becker: Fox
Amanda Overmyer doesn't plan on chasing fame forever.

Did your musical persona carry over to relating to the other contestants on a personal level?
My personality within itself, I tend to keep pretty sheltered and safe away from anything. I can count on two hands the friends and family that truly matter. Other than that, I'm kind of standoffish.
In any situation where a group of people go through something like this, there's an element of camaraderie there. Everybody is going through the same thing, so they're the only people that understand what everyone is going through. I had no problem fitting in.

What's next for the rocker chick?
I've owned a home in Indiana for three years. I can go back to my career if need be. As of right now, no decisions are being made as far as what exactly I'm going to do, 'cause I have no idea if there's any options out here (in Los Angeles). It's just going to be a little bit of waiting game for the next couple of months.
I'll probably give it, I'll venture to say, maybe a good six months. If nothing happens, I'm going to go back and continue on the career path that I started.

How motivated, then, are you to really make this happen?
I'm going to take calculated risks to achieve success, but everyone's definition of success varies from person to person. Success, to me, is a strong, healthy family and success in whatever job that you do.
If this is just 15 minutes of fame, I'm not going to chase it my whole life trying to get it back. I'll take it for what it is and move on. Hopefully, it's not. Hopefully, I can make a career out of this, but it's not going to be that unicorn that I keep chasing.

See my talk with "the lord" was pretty right on! Will

I miss my Froggie, can she come out and play????
