American Idol Top 10 show their age curlio
 2008-03-25 21:41:09
Television The Top 10 on American Idol show their age tonight with yet another clever theme for the week. Yes, we're up to the "songs from the year you were born" theme. Ryan quickly introduces everyone then moves on with the show as we're short on time tonight!

Ramiele Malubay is up first. She was born in 1987. Ramiele's mother says Ramiele bit people until she was about three, then moved on to singing. She picked the song "Alone" by Heart. It's a big song and her voice just doesn't stand up to the original. The backup singer was fantastic though. Randy Jackson noted that Ramiele is under the weather, but said the song was pitchy and not the right song choice. Paula Abdul was sure that Ramiele picked it when she was healthy. Simon Cowell didn't think it was as bad as Randy thought. Simon thought the first half was okay. He added that if Ramiele managed to survive last week after her bad performance, she'll survive this week.

Jason Casto, who was also born in 1987, says that people always told him how cute his eyes were. He chose to perform "Fragile" by Sting. Yes, he was there with his guitar again. I know and accept that it's safe and getting old for some people. But I love him and you'll just have to live with that, the same way you live with my hatred of others. Discount him from my rankings if you must. Randy thought it was a good song choice. Paula says he's staying true to himself and it was a beautiful song. But she added that Jason isn't doing anything different to wow them. Simon says he's had two bad weeks and that he needs to take it more seriously. He played very clumsy and everything was laid back. Simon says that Jason is potentially a winner, but won't win if he keeps doing that week after week.

Syesha Mercado was also born in 1987. She says that when she was 4 she would fall down and scream and yell. She screamed and yelled her way through "If I Were Your Woman." It was pitchy and shrieky. Randy thought it was the best she's ever done, including the audition. Paula says that this is the performance everyone will remember as the one Syesha became the dark horse that will sail through. Simon thought it was indeed her best so far, but not as good as Randy thinks. He says this song stretched the limits of her vocals.

Ryan talks to Chikezie about song selection. Chikezie said it's been hard for him because he was ripped apart when he sang his first ballad. But after a talking to by the staff, he's better now and feels up to it. He was born in 1985. In his clip, he talked about growing up with Nigerian parents. He picked "If Only For One Night" to perform. It wasn't great, it was actually rather boring. There really wasn't anything bad about his vocals, it was just boring. The vocals were actually very good. But I don't think anyone will remember what he sang. Randy thought it was very old-school and boring. Paula says he's a good throwback. Simon thought he sang it well but the performance was cheesy. He misses Chikezie's personality and wants him to show originality.

Brooke White was born in 1983 the oldest of 4 kids. She taught herself to play piano. Brooke picked "Every Breath You Take" to perform. After a false start, she gets going. The piano is like a crutch for her it seems to be holding her back at times. I normally like Brooke, but there was just something about this one that I didn't like that I can't put my finger on. Randy liked the front part, but thought it would have been better for Brooke to do the song alone without the band joining in. Paula loves that she is unique. Simon agreed with Randy, but thinks it's good enough to keep her another week.

Michael Johns was born in 1978 in Australia. He always wanted to be the best at whatever he did. Michael says he and his sister were very competitive at card games. He performed "We Will Rock You / We Are the Champions" by Queen. Michael should really be in a Queen cover band as it seems to be the only songs he performs well. This was absolutely his best yet. Randy loved that he finally believed in himself and used that big voice. Paula called this his shining moment. Simon thought he had star potential for the first time. He finally saw the confidence and thought this was the only memorable performance of the night so far.

Carly Smithson was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1983. She picked "Total Eclipse of the Heart." It's a good song choice for her and a pretty good performance. Randy didn't like the song choice though and didn't like the note at the end. Paula admires that she can take a song Paula doesn't like and make her go buy it. Simon thought something just didn't work. Carly was too uptight and needs to lighten up.

David Archuleta talked to Ryan about how he might miss prom. David was born in 1990 to a family with 3 sisters and a brother. He picked "You're the Voice" to sing tonight. It was pitchy in spots but okay overall. Even his pitchy performances are better than most other performers. Randy thought it was a strange song choice. Paula said they were all trying to figure that one out. Simon thought he sang well in parts but it was too much like a theme park performance.

Kristy Lee Cook was born in 1984. She came out smiling. In her youth she was always loud and singing. She picked the song "God Bless the USA." I was a little nervous because that's one of my favorite songs (I'm patriotic I can't help myself). Kristy, bless her little heart, actually managed to pull out a good performance, her best yet actually. It was pitchy in some spots and didn't give me goosebumps but still decent. Randy called it a great song choice with some pitchy spots but nice. Paula thought she had seen better performances by Kristy and told her to watch the pitch problems. Simon said it was her best performance by a mile and the most clever song choice he's heard in years. He says that will keep her in the competition.

David Cook was born in 1982. He thought he had a massive skull when he was a baby. He picked up his first guitar at the age of 2. He sings a rock version of "Billy Jean," that does get attributed to the proper talent (Chris Cornell I think is what Ryan said?). It was an awesome performance of an awesome song rearranged by an awesome performer (Chris that is). Randy said he was the most original and bold contestant ever. Randy thinks that with that performance he might with the whole lot. Paula was blown away by how smart and brave Cookie is. Simon said it was brave and amazing.

My Rankings:
A three way tie for first place goes to Jason, Michael and Cookie who each score a 10
Coming in next with an 8 is Carly.
Then we have another three way tie with Kristy, Archie and Chikezie who each earn a 7 tonight.
That makes my bottom three:
Brooke with a 6
Syesha with a 5
Ramiele with a 4

I think that the actual bottom three will be Chikezie, Syesha and Kristy, with Kristy going home. Even Dusty has accepted that with Kristy earning high praise from the judges and getting her best scores ever, she's doomed to leave us this week.

1. eat popcorn

2. write something stupid

3. read curlio's reveiw

4. insult will and/or sprout

first let me say that every person on this planet should have chris cornell's cd 'euphoria morning. yah, its an oldie and still not a moldie. its a bloody classic. his voice is amazing. and, no billie jean is not a cut.

i liked simon's take this evening.

i loathed seacruds suit/tie/shirt get up. monkey vomit green?

jason sounded like a sergio menendez (sp?) brazil 66 days. he isn't gonna make it is he? crap.

cookie was good. that kid really does have the pipes.

brooke i liked her for the very first time. i really liked her.

cheesy is a sweetheart. makes me smile. not gonna win by a mile and i do not mind having him around.

carly - i hold to all of you here who push: bitter.

archie - what? i dig john farnam & richard clapton btw. farnam has any number of fab songs from back in the day that sound absolutely nothing like a 'christian rock' ditty. that was awful.

true confession: i fast forwarded past miss horsey. tell me if it was any good will aka boobie man. who was it that said last week.."will you are one sick puppy" or something to that effect. take your meds long before your post. on the odd occasion you do actually have interesting things to say.

next week the popcorn gods say that every one of them is gonna do better so stay seated and keep munching.

My Ranking of Tonight's Preformances:

3. David Archuleta - I liked it. Really, I did. I don't know why it seems like nobody else did.

4. Brooke White - Great, as usual, though the false start threw me off.

5. Jason Castro - safe, but good.

Honestly, I forgot everyone else.

Tonight was one of those serious moments of revelations...every one of these contestants was born after I graduated from high school. The oldest is Cookie who could have been born to "those girls" who were pregnant at graduation.

Ah, for the review. Once again, I will build on the wisdom of our Toad:

I just discovered Newman's Own Microwave Organic Popcorn. It takes more like air-popped popcorn than PopSecret or Orville. PopSecret's "Movie Theater Butter" is waaaayyy too salty.

Right, I'm supposed to be commenting on AI and not popcorn.

Good plan. Where the heck is Sprout? I wonder if he's neck deep in family business or wedding preparations, or both.

Yep, you spared me writing the above. I see Archie and I keep having flashbacks to "Up with People", which was little more than an amusement park musical. I predict him to win it all and sell less records that even Jordin.

You missed Michael Johns, whom I actually liked for the first time. However, Curlio has the quintessential line for MJ:

"Michael should really be in a Queen cover band as it seems to be the only songs he performs well."

Jason and Brooke are both one-trick ponies with whom I am already bored. Brooke exposed herself with weak vocals last week. Jason is just not showing any of the spark that he did earlier.

carly - i hold to all of you here who push: bitter.

I see a talented girl who knows this is her last chance and is behaving/performing desperately because of it. I still see a highly respected and in demand backup singer.
toad said:

Don't faint, it was almost worth watching. When they announced her song choice, my first thought was "brilliant". Simon was right, she pretty much will go through to the next round based solely on her song choice. She didn't butcher it, which meant that she did the best she's ever done.
toad said:

The popcorn gods are wrong. Next week is Dolly Parton mentoring what I presume will be Country Week.

At some point, we are not going to have show tunes, we are going to have "Andrew Lloyd Webber" songs. I would have cheered for this theme last season as Melinda, Lakesha, and Jordin could have all soared on ALW tunes and Blake would have had fun. This year, ain't nobody with that kind of pipes except maybe Carly, who will probably be gone by then.

This was definitely David C and Michael's night. Great performances.

I love Brooke. I love her look and her voice.

I thought Syesha did very well tonight as well as Kristi.

Jason and David A - nothing special.

Bottom 3 for me are Ramiele (even tho I know she had a rough week), Carly (just can't connect with her), and Chekisee (although I love his personality.)

What, no mention of Simon's comment about Archie's stage Dad? He said something about not believing that it was actually Archie that picked that song, since it's just not him. Ryan then did nothing but the numbers, completely ignoring the comment entirely.

I thought it was the best moment of the night, after Kristy jumping up and down.

Top 10 - Best to Worst

1. Michael Johns - If you listen closely he was saying "Me are the champions".
2. Chikezie Eze - Chikezie can be a manly man?
3. Syesha Mercado - There's still something a bit off in that voice, but acting lessons can do wonders for a girl.
4. Brook White - She kept her mouth shut for a whole 3 seconds. How is this possible?
5. Carly Smithson - Somehow she incorporated both power squats AND pelvic thrusts into one performance. Genius!
6. David Cook - I personally have never seen someone take random pop songs and turn it into emo rock. And I certainly haven't seen it hundreds of times.
7. Ramiele Malubay - Come on. Where's your soul? Baby? What happened to your soul? I saw it once. I know I saw it.
8. Kristy Lee Cook - Did I miss something? Is she running for office?
9. David Archuleta - Menudo vs. Lion King.
10. Jason Castro - I feel ripped off. Clearly, this was just Brook White wearing a dreadlock wig. I want my memory back.

Best to worst tonight.

1. David Cook: Great performance. But I don't understand the raves of "Brave" and "original" since it was mostly Chris Cornell's arrangement.

2. Michael Johns: I could have done without the "We will Rock You", but he nailed "We Are the Champions." I agree he seems to be perfect for a Queen cover band. Too bad that seems to be all he can do.

3. Carly Smithson: Except for that run at the end it was great. I don't understand the judges on this one.

5. Brooke White: Not bad, but I think the piano playing got in the way. And I agree the second part just didn't seem to work as an arrangement.

6. Jason Castro: Workmanlike, competent, safe. Not very memorable. Sting songs have very little melody and Jason really needs a strong melody to sing.

7. Kristy Lee Cook: A pretty competent vocal on a very corny song. Her personal best by a long shot.

8. Syesha Mercado: Competent vocal, but boring.

9. David Archuleta: The vocal was fine (though I still don't like his voice) but the song was awful and the performance was not even worthy of "Up With People." His song choice shows his age.

10. Chekezie: Cheesy is back.

11. Ramiele Malubay: I actually thought her song choice and arrangement were an improvement over previous weeks, but her execution was the worst of the night.

I think Ramiele or Syesha will go. And I am fine with that.

So...I'm sad to say that Ramiele was definitely the worst for tonight and should go home...but I doubt she will. And WOW...Cookie and MJ gave me goosebumps (Kristy too, but it was more the song than her voice, so that doesn't count). I didn't get the judges comments for Carly, I thought it was a good choice and pretty well executed. Everyone else was forgetful, good vocals all around...but just forgetful.

Dusty puts that as his favorite moment of the night too. Of course he's still horribly depressed that she'll be leaving us tonight. Next week being country week is yet another sign she'll go. I'm guess Will's willy is delighted with the jumping Kristy image as well.

RE: Archie and Up With People - YES! That's it exactly. He's one of those annoyingly perky teens from Up With People that we were taken to the gymnasium to watch in high school. God I how I prayed for them to fall victim to terrorists.

My thoughts:

Ramiele - she screamed through that song. If her voice was that bad, she should have picked a different song that was less challenging. Problem is, she probably doesn't know any other songs that came out that year. The sign of a phony artist that doesn't truly appreciate music. She should go home, but won't and someone else who deserves to stay will leave.

Castro - take away the lyrics and you have a nice song that you can do the Rhumba to. Rhumba+those deep, thought-provoking lyrics do not mix. But, everyone was having a good time listening to this safe mess, while I was cringing at the terrible arrangement.

Syesha - It was decent. I thought she was the weakest good singer tonight and will probably go home because of it, even though she deserves to stay.

Chikezie - I agree with Randy 100% That would have been a great song... back in 1985. Great singer, wrong era. And for Simon to say Chikezie was unoriginal, especially after what he did the previous two weeks, was a bunch of crap.

Brooke - That was "Let It Be" part II. Didn't work quite as well this time. Not enough emotion. It was still decent though.

Michael - great performance. Best of the night. He voice showed true power. He needs to be belting out songs more often.

Carly - It was what it was. That is what I excepted Carly to do and she did it. She is becoming the Irish Melinda. And how many people thought she looked like Brenda Fricker as a child?

Archie - I thought Simon getting a dig on Archie's Dad was brilliant! That song was terrible. Archie is starting to bug me.

Kristy Lee - Yup. She picked the right song this week to stay on the show. Can't make fun of that song or performance. That would be anti-American. One should automatically get goose bumps when a solid talent sings that song. My skin was smooth after Kristy Lee was finished.

Cookie - What an emo, angst poser. The song was great. The vocals were great. But, it wasn't original. And this shtick is getting annoying. Is he going to do a emo version of "Coat of Many Colors" next week? This dude is lame. And yes, he does have a big cranium too!

Also My Ranking of Tonight's Preformances:

1. David Cook - Yes, one word : WOW.

2. David Archuleta - What's up with that song that no one knows or likes? We want a great song!

3. Brooke White - That start was bad, the same as when Archie forgot his lyrics.

4. Jason Castro - He's always good.

5. Carly Smithson - Great voice, but she'll be lucky to stay on.

6. Michael Johns - I like him more each week.

7. Chikezie - Not my fav, but I hope he stays.

So... Ramiele, Sayesha, and Kristy better be in the bottom 3! And Ramiele be the one to leave.

My take:

Ramiele Malubay –Has potential, but bad song choice and performance. She is far too immature for this journey; I’m sure she will be glad when the torture is over and she can join the tour and make some dough.

Jason Castro –The guys on the subway have a tiny bit more enthusiasm than this kid, pretty eyes and estrogen biased appeal, that’s it, will never fill any auditorium by himself.

Syesha Mercado –Great sound, and potential, something missing, maybe insecurity masked by false pride, just guessing, maybe after having a job and developing genuine humility will help, who knows.

Chikezie Eze –The man is very good at what he does, he is no more dated in his style than Syesha and they don’t rap her for that. Maybe he is too much of a pleaser and has imprinted in his mind the “acts” he copies, but his smile is great and he can and will make money but don’t know if the current “gangster” or “player” image of the black male star will cycle out before his time is past.

Brook White –Love her and her singing. What she does is not as easy as she makes it look. When you bring that vulnerability and genuineness and your real personal self you are incredibly vulnerable, but at the same time, it can lead to intimacy with an loyal audience. She did her style with more purpose and sincerity than the Castro boy, he mumbled through his, maybe he wants to get back to his ole haunts. I have a feeling he’d rather be seducing 15 year old girls on the steps of the high school. I like the “Felicity hair” better!!

Michael Johns –Finally brought a great musical vehicle to show his wares. He is a likeable Aussie, who are generally all about fair play and tenacity and with the right songs and his smashing good looks, he might come about.

Carly Smithson –Good vocals to me but as everyone seems to notice an odd somewhat sad or bitter intensity. She has a tiny bit of vindictive “I’ll show them” in her performance, if she could ever “genuinely relax” she might develop a following. She has everything she needs but the love of it. She might say she loves it but it is a tarnished love.

David Archuleta –That was so bad, if he picked that song he is not smart music wise, if he did, he doesn’t want the pressure of winning. As good as he is the fact that he pursues this quest through contest like this is too weird for me. Once should have been enough (see Pat Benetar in a shiny formal sing on star search, yep it happened.) Perhaps he wants to be a young guy at the prom smooching with his baby-doll! In my areas of expertise, I have seen way too much burn-out on once promising talents. (A life out of balance and possibly supporting his family partially, or holding it together emotionally, through his quest.)

Kristy Lee Cook –Love her, her youth, beauty, and glad she is around so I can tease Froggie and the What What girls. Don’t think she’ll win but she adds her zest to life to the show and she is very watch able and entertaining.

David Cook- Great presence and you know what? That huge skull might just hold a genuine love and appreciation of music and the goods to produce that we would pay to see. Pay by the bucket loads! It is ashamed he has such goofy hair. I finally get it that he is sensitive about his “Oprah” head, hey buddy I’ve got one, hey, I’m the Willy, I survived somehow. LOL

My rankings would be for last night!

David Cook and Michael Johns

Kristy Lee, Brooke, and Carly,

Chikeeze and Syesta

Castro, Archie, and Mamboletta
Will Maboletta going home unless Hawaii saved her!

Will

I guess Simon wants, for whatever reason, Kristy lee Cook to be around for a little while longer. I find it laughable that he is a Lee Greenwood fan. Do you think he knows any of his other songs? Does anybody. . . ? I didn't think so.

Yeah, I can see Simon, driving his Ford F150 to NASCAR, listening to Martina McBride's let freedom ring, while chewing on a mouthful of tobacco. Give me a break!

Speaking of Michael johns, I believe last night he was exposed as the mediorce singer his is. Fredereek's law: "If you can't sing a popular song as good as or better than the original, then you blew it." Johns is no freddy Mercury.

Just a few random thoughts:

David Cooke and Michael Johns was by far the best in my opinion.

Why is Syesha more palatable with the straight hair. She looks older, more abrasive with the curly hair maybe.

I love Jason. I think he is just riding this for all it is worth, and people are loving it. (Watch him go home tonight!)

Brooke needs to get out from behind the piano. She does better when she is not playing an instrument.

I thought Carly was good, but if she doesn't quit knitting those eyebrows together, she is going to get those ugly parralell wrinkles that people get at the top of their noses. She already looks older and that is not going to help her.

Kristy Lee wasn't as bad as I expected. I didn't watch her, just listened to her. I hope she wins one for the boys!

Jason- His interview skills are still meh...But he's great. But I also thought Simon's (was it?) comment on how he was like a guy at a subway with his guitar hit home, at least a little bit.

Syesha was pretty good. Not boring but pretty good. I thought it wasn't as pitchy as people says it was, some parts were quite nice.

Chikezie- Went home. Oh well. Doesn't make any different to me.

Brooke- Her false start was kind of funny. And I agree theres something that I dont like about her. Her voice is fine, and she looks good, but I think its her sometimes humble sometimes abrasive personality. She kept interrupting the judges, and says thank you too much.

Michael- I always have forgotten him until now. He did a pretty good performance. Apart from the accent, he still isn't very memorable. But it was a good performance. He's is oldest I believe.

Carly- Her tattooed husband is so cool. Her performance was pretty good. Like every week. I like how her songs aren't all sugarypop.

Archie- Very High School Musical. Thats a bad thing as I did not like the movie. I laughed when Simon said it was like an amusement park singalong, and I seldom laugh out loud when I watch idol. I noticed how Ryan ignored the comment. There was less banter this week. Oh, how I miss Simon's discreet remarks on Ryan and the team he plays for. He's safe. He could rap the song and still be safe.

Kristy- Ugh. No. Just no.

Cookie- It proves how uninformed the judges are when Paula (I think) said that he was so original in his arrangements. From what I've heard, Cookie plays other band's versions of songs every week. Take 'Eleanor'. He ripped that one off Doxology. So at least props were given this week. But still. It was pretty good.

About 'Total Eclipse of the Heart.' I dont know why Paula doesn't like the original song. Its much better than "Cold-Hearted Snake." Believe it or not, she was the 2000-2003 Britney Spears of her generation. Shocking. And I noticed how she has trouble forming sentences this season. Maybe too much sedation in her Coca-cola bottle?
