American Idol sends home another

American Idol lowered their number to nine tonight with a result that was both shocking and expected at the same time.
Ryan Seacrest first announced that they received over 30 million votes for last nights performances. After an intro of the judges and a pimping of the songwriting contest, we were treated to the Top 10 group performance. It was okay but nothing spectacular. They sang "Right Back Where We Started."
Then we get a backstage look at the whole iTunes thing. The idols record full length versions of the songs they perform. They all talked about the recording experience. They then recapped the show from last night.
Getting to the meat of the show, Chikezie was placed in the bottom three, which he knew as he was pointing to the silver stools before Ryan announced that he needed to go to the silver stools. Brooke White was safe as was Carly Smithson, who was apparently surprised by the "news" that she is pregnant. She isn't pregnant by the way.
The Ford commercial was cool tonight. They sang "I Want You to Want Me" on t-shirts, posters, and CD Cases. I loved it. David Archuleta was safe, he said he had fun and maybe got carried away a bit so that might be why Simon Cowell thought it was a theme park performance. David Cook was also safe. Ryan talked to Chris Cornell, who loved Cookie's version of Chris' version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." Syesha Mercado was in the bottom three, leaving Michael Johns safe on the couch.
As we head back from commercial for question time, we get a shot of Constantine Maroulis. Sarah asks Chikezie if he's single, yes he is. Nicole wants to know how Archie picked the song last night. Archie says it's one of his all time favorites and he loves the words and music. He adds that he did pick the song himself. Ari wanted to know how she can take Ryan's job. Simon said it doesn't take a lot of talent, so there's a chance for everyone. Caitlin asked Brooke who she would do a duet with. Brooke's answer was John Mayer. Last, Vanessa wanted to know if Simon thinks he's the best looking on the show and why. Simon says it's not what he says but what other people say.
Then Kimberley Locke returned to Idol. She talked about her experience in Season 2. She's also opened a restaurant outside Manhattan now and lost 40 pounds. She sang "Fall." It was an okay song, but nothing really spectacular. Ryan teased that they would go to the judges now. Kimberley said they had to skip Simon.
There was another pimping of Idol Gives Back and all the good they did with the money from last year. They did new programs for students, to feed people, giving kids books and all the other wonderful things the money has done.
Then we were finally back to more results. Ramiele Malubay was safe, leaving me with a heart attack as either Jason Castro or Kristy Lee Cook would be headed for the Bottom 3. Kristy was safe, compounding my heart attack. Paula Abdul said that someone has to go at this stage. Jason said he expected something because he hadn't been out this late before. He was prepared for it. Ryan quickly ended my heart attack though, sending Jason back to the couch with my promise to vote for two hours next week.
That leaves either Chikezie or Syesha leaving. Simon says that Chikezie's biggest hurdle is that there are better performers. He and Jason picked the wrong songs. Paula says that's not true of Syesha. Randy Jackson says the public doesn't get it because she was brilliant last night. No, the judges don't get it because the public just does NOT care about Syesha. She's doesn't win the "worst performance" poll, she doesn't win the "who will be the next Idol" poll. She just doesn't connect. But she has another week to try to learn how to connect, as she stays while Chikezie is headed home.
Next week we get the country theme, which will probably send either Kristy or Syesha home. I just hope that Jason has been given a rude awakening now and will get his behind on track again.

I don't completely agree. Two names that were the bane of Simon - Sanjaya and Scott Savol. In both cases, Simon was saying that they would be the one leaving for weeks before they went.
I know that Simon can be harsh on particular singers like Sanjaya and Scott. But they were jokers and were never good singers. It seems that Simon tends to have targeted statements for particular people every week. Regardless of how well or how bad they do, he'll use that influential statement to guide America into voting for or against that person. It's the statement, it's the tone, it's the inflection. I'll watch carefully next week and see if I can pinpoint some concrete examples. This is not the first time I have noticed this. Simon has a vested and monetary interest in who wins this contest, so I do not think I am completely off base here.

I must agree with you Ben. Generally speaking, Simon will "pimp" whomever he thinks will be more marketable. This year it is David Archuleta.
It is not Simon's fault; it is those voting who allow themselves to be influenced by his comments, and won't think independently

couple of comments:
the cookie and not original songs:
- does not hide this fact.
- song gets attributed to the original artist (unlike daughtry and any number of others in their respective seasons)
- do these contestants have enough time on their hands to do an original anything between pimping them out and commercial making? think jd from inxs finds a new front man. yah he blew them away a few times with stuff he came into the show with. how in goodness name do ai contestants have that option?
yes, okay cookie gets on my 'not original' nerve too. that being said he also dances on any number of my this guy can actually sing ear drum cells. he has talent which may land him in the winning position.
jason - he is young, inexperienced and talented. a natural. he needs more work. he needs more focus. he needs vocal training. he has more going for him in his little finger than any number of the other contestants including star quality. i am with curlio on this one; i will buy his cd (though i would like to see you keep voting for him curlio - perhaps that means i will have to finally start voting?). i would also like to point out that jason's style is more conducive to success in more intimate venues. notice the difference between him in a small(er) studio setting and being in the theatre? huge difference.
a comment on mr. will's comment - no jason is by no means the best singer in the competition. you are correct on that. its the 'package' and star quality that's appealing. like last years french idol winner julien doré - there is just something there. something unique. something original.
http://www.youtube.com/wa...pR5syilk&feature=related
speaking of not being the greatest singer(s) and still being great:
- my favorite band for the last 4 years running kings of leon
- hello; the lead singer for radio head (another all time fav) thom yorke. great singer no. great artist and the 'package' h+ll to the yah.
- just about any artists out there now worth their weight including; the fratellis, the hives, the good, the bad and the queen, artic monkeys, etc.
- errr, ummmm....is anyone prepared to argue that madona is a good singer?

I would say Madonna is not a very good singer, but she sure is a great artist. And I think Toad is right, not every singer as to be vocally great, as long as they have a unique style. Leonard Cohen anyone? Not a good singer by a mile, but OMG, I've seen him live once, and I will go again if ever he decides to tour, he could be 100, and I'll go. Jason is young and probably very shy and awkward (spelling?), but he'll grow into it eventually, even Kurt Cobain had his moments (not that Jason comes even close to Kurt's big toe in talent).
I usually hate country week, so I'm bracing myself for next Tuesday. And unfortunately I'm sure Kristy will do fine.

I completely disagree. The covers that Cookie does have not been attributed to the cover artists every week. The only time a cover artist was the Whitesnake cover he did a few weeks ago. "Hello" was never acknowledged on the show as an Incubus cover. Chris Cornell's version was acknowledged only after the fact and in a "blow off" fashion. So, the perception remains that he is coming up with these awesome arrangements when he is not.
The fact that Chikezie came up with two completely original arrangements during the two Beatles weeks, as well as doing some arranging during the Top 24 week shows that there is plenty of time to come up with some arrangement of quality. What Cookie is doing is either lazy or he is being fed that stuff by AI. Regardless, it is a crock.

One thing everyone seems to forget is that a lot of editing goes on before we see that show on Tuesday night. More often that not, Tuesday's show is filmed earlier than when it is on TV. Sometimes folks get credit, but it doesn't make the final show. And most kids may not have heard some of these obscure artists. (And many adults)
Okay I must vent. I saw an Idol show on the TV guide channel today and this year's contestants were asked how they spent their first paycheck. Answers ranged from video games to clothes to Cds. The only answer that was SO STAGED it wasn't funny was Archie's answer. He said that his first paycheck came from some Utah Children's singing contest and he used it to help his grandmother pay off bills because she was having a hard time. Okay, shoot me with the synical, going straight to H*LL, arrow but that was the most idiotic answer I have ever heard. How many kids use money to help Grandma? And why should they? Why isn't Grandma's child (Archie's dad is my bet) helping Grandma? I think this kid is precious, but if there is a "poser" on AI this year, it is David Archuletta and I think you can thank his mom and dad for that!

first - ben you are right. i had no idea that hello was a cover song. it was not acknowledged.
second - i believe that the cornell song was introduced as such and before cookie's preformance. if i remember correctly seacrud said something to the effect of cookie about to preform cornell's version/arrangement of the song.
third - whitesnake; we agree here.
i was disappointed to see cheesy go last night. so many should have gone before him. on the other hand, i would not call cheesy's reworking of any song to date technically a re-arrangement.
the whole b.s. about any of this seasons contestants arranging a song is insanity. the band and the musical arranger is 're-arranging' the music based on what - a comment by the contestant? who knows - cheesy does not have the musical background nor the training to re-arrange any darn thing. that it gets attributed to him in any way is either a generous offer or a finger point exercise.

In "Evita", I couldn't believe it was her singing.
I would argue that she was a GREAT singer in that movie's soundtrack.

Let's see the case against Will...
2006 - His first and most serious offense - supporting the indefendable - THE PICKLE!
2007 - Haley! Need I say more?
2008 - Kristy Lee Sellout.
Three strikes and ya' out!
At least there are no concerns that Kristy will actually win this whole thing.

I'll concede this point. I may have missed the intro and don't recall it now. But, I know it hasn't been done all the time. On the flipside, I think the judges have been pretty good at acknowledging covers when applicable, so I assume that they are aware of the controversy that happened with Daughtry and keep it in the back of their minds. But, no one is perfect! toad said:

If this is the case, AI needs to acknowledge it. I think the lay person believes that the contestants are arranging their songs. During that dull results show, AI should do a profile on how songs are chosen and arranged. That could eat up a good ten minutes of time and I am sure people are very interested in this aspect!

Ms, My Sharona!!! you have so much to learn about men!
Hailey, beautiful, sexy, fun!
Kristy Lee, beautiful, fun, outdoor guy fun stuff, oh yeah!!!
Pickle-a-roni, well, maybe only children and men like her but she is fun, fun, fun-er, and fun-est!
Men really want to laugh and bounce around in a circle and sing, "they're coming to take me away, ha ha, ho ho, hee hee......."! Life is a "veil of tears" we pass through and an we do strive for a little joy and laughter! Love, the Willivator
Just for debate, if you had to choose a life with the minutes tainted with a mist of sadness or you could have a life filled with great joy and laughter which every sage that ever lived would tell you necessitates it's correspondent sadness, loss, and tears, which would you choose. Oatmeal for every meal, or pizza then famine then pizza. I do like the spicy food especially the ones with "Pickles"! .
If it is an illusion the with women like this that we would have fun, then it is our illusion, no different than yours or anyone elses. Now Curlio, Dusty should be allowed at least one Pretty girl on Tractor on the farm calender!

please pass the oatmeal.
while i do love me some pizza - in moderation. too much of it would do my body in - my heart, health, bum, etc. in other words the protracted effect of constant joy and laughter on my sympathatic system alone would kill me sooner than later!
in this case, in the long run, i would be better off eating the oatmeal - essentially choosing matter over mind. sure, i would need to balance oatmeal eating with greens and a bit of protein but the effects of the oatmeal - or lack of effect on my body - would mean that i would live a heck of a lot longer.
beyond the argument that you would have to have sadness to register happiness: what if a little bit of sadness with a little bit of happiness was our minds and bodies way of balancing?
and, yes there are different levels of joy.

When it comes to numbers of any sort, be it monopoly or otherwise, I leave those things to Dusty. Give me a calculator and I'm fine - let me figure out myself what 9 times 47 is without a calculator and I hope you've got a comfortable seat. I'm a typical blonde female in this I suppose. If it involves adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing - forget it! Now if you're talking about 75% off or 65% off, I'm your woman. THOSE are numbers a girl needs to know.
Oddly enough, Dusty still lets me do the budgeting and handle the checkbook. Silly boy....

Percent off - you got that right! That was actually how I learned to do math in my head as a child. Mom was a math major and is still doing taxes professionally as her retirement "fun" project. She taught me beginning Algebra one summer while I was bored...I was about 9.
My husband handles the checkbook. He has a business background....not me. I got nominated to be the treasurer of a group recently and declined because I literally wouldn't know the difference between accounts payable and accounts receivable except that my husband "brings work home". They don't teach accounting terms in science classes and calculus!
