Interest in Chris Cornell's 'Billy Jean' spikes after Idol

Interest in Chris Cornell's version of the Michael Jackson hit "Billy Jean" has spiked after American Idol finalist David Cook performed the song on last week's show. Chris was a bit worried that Idol viewers who aren't familiar with him wouldn't know it was his arrangement, as he felt the judges were giving David credit for the arrangement.

"There's a certain amount of credit given to an 'approach' to something and the presentation of something," he said. "In a situation where they're just strictly doing someone else's song, if it's not something that's completely recognizable, it can be mistaken. But this is a little bit of an unusual situation, because mine is such a dramatic departure."

Chris added that David sang it great, and ultimately "it's all good." The extra exposure pushed Chris' track to number 12 on iTunes' Top Alternative chart.

Ryan Seacrest did give credit to Cornell both before David performed the song (though that did get a bit overlooked due to the applause) and during the Wednesday night results show. Obviously the producers know what song is being sung by which contestants and what version of the song it is. Perhaps that information needs to be given to the judges, who have frequently as of late admitted that they had no knowledge of the original song being performed. They don't necessarily need to listen to every song beforehand, but knowing who wrote the song, who performed it, and who arranged it might make the judges look more informed and less clueless (though that's hopeless for Paula Abdul I fear).

	AI proves yet again that it is the Oprah of music. Mention a song or artist and watch the sales soar. Simon's mention of Eva Cassidy a few weeks ago turned me onto her music. Great stuff - too bad she is now passed at such an early age... I agree on giving the info to the judges ahead of time so they can be a little more informed. It'll help them prevent making outlandish statements like "That was an original!"
