American Idol kicks off another girl curlio
 2008-04-30 22:10:29
Television Many predicted the success of the guys on American Idol this season. While we expected more guys in the top than we actually got, the girls seem to be dropping like flies now. We lost yet another girl tonight, but which one?

Ryan Seacrest says that there were over 45 million votes for the Top 5 yesterday. We quickly get into the Top 5 medley of Neil Diamond songs. There were some nice moments in the medley. There were some truly painful moments in there, too.

Gina Glocksen and Constantine Maroulis are there talking about their show American Idol Extra. Ryan gets C'tine to do the face (oh I've missed that). Ryan also talked about Paula Abdul's mistake, with talking about Jason Castro's second song before he performed it. He simply said that the rumors aren't true and that she is a part of the family and they love her. Yeah, I've got members of my family that I love that are insane. That doesn't mean you flaunt them in public. That's why you have basements.

Then we were off to results. Jason Castro was up first. Ryan talked to him about Simon's comments. Jason realized that he gets good results when he knows the song or when he changed them. It didn't matter though as Jason's fans got him through another week (go us!). David Archuleta was up next. Ryan asked Paula what she meant by telling him to have more fun. Uh note to Ryan, having more fun means you should ... have more fun. Anyhow Paula said that there is a certain zone you hit when you're a performer andyou want to see that joy. Archie will get another chance to have fun as he's safe too.

Ryan pimped the new season of "So You Think You Can Dance," which I think I'll actually be able to watch this year. What is with Nigel's hair this year? He looks.... gay. Ryan Lessnow won the design your own Coca-Cola cup, which Randy Jackson models for everyone.

David Cook gave me a heart attack by being up next. Ryan asked him about his reaction to Paula calling him the next American Idol. Cookie said he thought about what Simon said to Carly Smithson last week about it being the kiss of death. Cookie didn't get the kiss yet, he's safe. That leaves Syesha Mercado and Brooke White as the Bottom 2. Ryan asks Syesha if the song choices are tough for her. Syesha says that they are, and that she doesn't know most of the songs. Ryan talks to Brooke about how she's so honest and emotional and how she came back so composed from Simon Cowell's "nightmare" comment. Brooke said that she just genuinely had a good time. Ryan tells them to have a seat for now, as they have other business to take care of first. Brooke says that's fine, they'll stay as long as they can.

Natasha Bedingfield performs her single "Pocketful of Sunshine." She has a great voice but for some reason she looks older tonight. Ryan talks to her after her performance about auditions and if she remembers her first one. Natasha says she never really auditioned but she remembered when Pop Idol was over in England and what those people must have gone through. She then runs over and sits next to Archie. Ryan tells her that Archie wants to ask her to the prom. She said she would go.

The Q&A session was back tonight, though I suspect it was staged this week. Michael asked Paula why she is always giving the contestants a break. Paula said someone has to and asks if Michael wants to be a singer. Michael says yes. Paula says that it is really hard and she wants to keep that dream alive. Miranda is up next with a question for Paula as well. She wants to know if Paula is going to do another video with Randy. Paula says she will when he is an animated cat. Last question goes to Tara who asks what was more memorable, kissing Paula or kissing her at the age of 9. After making sure it really is Tara that he kissed when he was nine, Ryan then asks if Simon was a good kisser. Simon says to bear in mind he was only 9. Paula wonders if she is over the rabies. Tara jokes that she has had a lot of therapy. Simon wonders if she is still cute. Tara tells Simon that he aged well and she thinks she did too. Simon tells us that she was literally his first crush. Ryan then gives a PSA about how nine is too young to kiss.

The Ford commercial features the contestants singing "Catch the Wind" while they do stuff that's good for the environment like making garbage go away. Then we're treated to a performance of "Pretty Amazing Grace" by Neil Diamond. The song is from Neil's upcoming album, "Home Before Dark" due out May 6th. Neil's mom is in the audience as Ryan points out. Ryan asks Neil why he keeps doing then when he could just retire. Neil says that he loves what he does. As for the topic of longevity, Neil says to just work hard and love what you do. He felt the judges were a little harsh once in awhile but generally right on. He tells the Top 5 to stay with it and don't listen to what Simon says. If you love it, don't ever stop.

Ryan tells Brooke that she is going home, which she seemed to expect. She cries, naturally. She sings "I Am I Said" while crying and the rest of the idols join her onstage.

I was a little shocked that Syesha didn't go home on her best week. I have to wonder how many times Syesha will be in the bottom before she finally goes home!

So next week's theme is apparently Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is something that might completely open the field. I predict a Cookie victory next week as he should smack that one through the roof.

Jason needs to go. His looks and not his voice have carried him this far, much further than he should have ever been able to advance. On the radio who would ever listen to any of his songs. David Archuleta has no commercial future and a one dimensional voice. Syesha is much more marketable than either of the two Jason or David A. At first I wasn't too inpressed with her, but as the weeks have gone on she has imopressed me more and more. That leaves David Cook, my prediction to win. @ years age we all knew that Chris Daughtry was the one to beat; he finished 4th but of the finalists from that year, he is the only one that has anything to "superstar" status. Taylor Who . . ? American does not alway get it right. THis is a TV show and songs are heard, not seen, more often than not. People voting on idol judge by what they see. People buy CDs based primarily what they hear. THat is why America keeps getting it wrong. Ipredict that Michael Johns will have a tremendous career and in 3 years be one of the, if not the most successful from this year. David Cook is guaranteed to have a huge career. Syesha will also have a great career. Acchuleta will be doing Wayne Newton impersonations on a small stage in a second rate casino in Vegas in front of Wayne Newton fans.

I am greatly disappointed that Brooke was sent home tonight instead of Syesha. Brooke has a much desireable unique voice like that of Stevie Nix's or Cherly Crow's and is so talented. I would buy her music and listen to all her songs. Syesha's voice is so common, nothing unique. I would not buy her music or listen to her songs. I will probably not watch American Idol anymore. I do not like how the Judge's, especially Paula how they predict the next idol. To me it's unfair and manipulative.
I think Carly deserved to go home last week as all she does is shout and sounds and looks horrible with that disgusting tatoo on her arm. Brooke is an American Idol, and should still be in there.

Give me a break. I'm sick of these great people getting the boot because a bunch of white-bred high school girls can vote thousands of times. This hairy guy needs to go, as well as the other chick - totally uninteresting. The three that held my interest have now turned into two - so goes the game. Can we have a few professional judges making the cut instead of handfuls of kooky high school chicks with daddy's cell phone.

Jason should have gone home!

Man...Johns, Carly, and now Brooke...all my favorites are gone =(

This is my prediction:
4) Syesha
3) Jason
2) Cook
1) David A.

Why? I think the fan base of Archie has long been solidified, extremely loyal, and now insurmountable.

Well... The key is not only your talent but most of all your FAN Base !!! Look at Sanjaya last year...
Jason should have gone home.. but he has a Huge Fan Base... thats the key...Most likely all of Brook' fan base will be voting for who really deserves it...

I am guessing that Ryan brought them out in order of their vote totals which would make Castro the top vote getter.

I predict an upset is in the works and Jason goes all the way. Now with Brooke gone, Jason is the only alternative to soulless melisma and poser rocker. Most of Brooke's support now goes to Jason.

Syesha is next to go, then Cook, leaving an Archie and Castro finale. At that point it could go either way, but I will put my money on Jason. His fan base is almost as rabid as Archie's and he hill get the anti-Archie vote which is mounting. Maybe this is just wishful thinking since Jason is the only one of my early favorites left. So it goes.

I am sorry to see Brooke go, but it was going to be this week or next week in any case. My only disappointment is that it wasn't Archie.

BTW, did anyone else catch that when Natasha Bedingfield said she wanted to say "Hi to David", Cook stood up to greet her. Awkward.

Tuesday during the performances and last night during Neil Diamond's performance I kept thinking about an old Dave Barry column, where he talked about bad songs. The whole thing started because he made a comment about a stupid like from Neil Diamond (in "I Am I Said" the part about the chair). Made it difficult to focus, particularly when Neil was singing.

I am sort of in the same boat with Pavlov. I think Castro might score an upset and knock one of the Davids, most likely Cookie, out of the Top 2. I don't think he will win, but I think his fan base is strong enough to do some damage. If Castro was supposedly the top vote getter this past week, he could easily be the top vote getter in two weeks. Final Three night is usually the night where the contestant sings their favorite and then the judges pick a song for them. Castro will be in his element and fans will vote. Cookie will also be in his element, but I can see more people assuming that he is safe and not vote for him. If people presume that contestants were called out based upon votes last night, then Cookie should get a boost in votes next week, thereby cementing Syesha's exit off the show. I cannot see her getting more votes than the boys at this point.

I got it wrong again this week, I thought Jason would have gone instead of Brooke.

It now comes down to who the producers think is more marketeable: Cook or Archuleta, and I think they will go for Cook. I can't see Syesha or Jason being in the final two.

Syesha must be admired for being so upbeat each week, even though she was almost always in the bottom three/two.

If there is one thing I will remember this season for it is the dearth of WOW performances.

AI doesn't reveal people in the order of their votes. They reveal people for maximum drama. By putting Cookie in 3rd place, they were hoping for his fans to go "OMG Not Cookie!" which is what happened in my house. I admit it, I fell for it. I still think David is number one and the other David is number two (which one you can determine yourself). Syesha and Jason will be in the bottom next week.

oh no i love zac efron and there is nothing zac efron about archuleta i cannot stand the kid...and Jason started out good btu come on now he is just boring and does the SAME THING everyweek as brooke has done....i think next weeks "shocker" week is probably going to be Jason because if he makes it to the finals i think a lot of people will stop watching...And next week COOK FANS NEED TO VOTE!!!! It is his week which is why people will think he is safe but you need to vote!!!!

If Castro is in the bottom two next week, then he will benefit with a voting boost the following week, thereby setting him up for a potential Top Two position. We'll see!

I agree with Curlio. I don't think the contestants were announced in vote getting order.

I think if there is any upset this year it will be Syesha winning the whole lot. Like someone said, that girl has been in the bottom 3 like every week!

I was happy Jason made it through again this week. I would like to see all three guys in the final three. I think that would make a pretty good show.

My prediction, as unfounded as the Crystal Bean Ball i am looking into, is that Archie wins it, pulls a Taylor Hicks or Rubben Studard and slides into AI memories. I think David Cook has a chance to make it after the show for more than a year. I also think that if Cookie does win, he might be okay with the whole AI deal because Daughtry is still with Clive and he may be with 19 as well. They may try to ride that horse twice.

Oddly, I am more excited to see what happens after final than for the final.

Again, winning Idol does not make you a star. Your voice either makes you or breaks you. Jason is all "sizzle" and "NO STEAK." If he should win he will be another Taylor Hicks. . .Taylor Who? Having a fan base amongst idol viewers will not make you a star; that requires TALENT.

Quick random thoughts -

Yes, Syesha has been in the Bottom Three every week this year. But remember, someone else was in the Bottom Three virtually every week on Season Five - Elliott Yamin. It managed to drive him to the Top Three.

Personally, I HOPE David Archuleta wins AI7. Archie and his stage managing-father and 19M deserve each other. David Cook has already shown that he has some health problems that are likely to be exacerbated by the stress of the AI tour (remember what happened to Bo Bice?). Further, David Cook needs freedom for his unique arrangements and what appeals to his fans...not likely to happen if he wins.

As far as Castro, I also thought he'd at least be in the Bottom Two last night. He clearly had the worst performances. Clearly he has a major and sustainable fan base.

I agree with the comment that this year has been marked by a dearth of "WOW" performances. I remember...Archie's "Shop Around", Syesha's ALW performance, Brooke's "Let it Be", Castro's "Hallelujah"...but that's been it for each of them. I do remember several of Cookie's arrangements starting with Lionel Ritchie's "Hello", "Billie Jean", and even using the voxbox...

Last year, the list goes on and on for each of the Top Four - Melinda's "W-O-M-A-N", "I Believe in You and Me", and Bon Jovi's "Have a Nice Day"; Jordin's "You'll Never Walk Alone" and others; Lakisha's "...And I'm Telling You" and others; and Blake's Marc Anthony song, Maroon 5 song, and Bon Jovi song...I still wish that ALW week was last year when they had the voices to pull it off...

Overall, this year has been the most forgettable since Season 3.

Ditto! Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken (eek I said the name!), Bucky Covington, Josh Gracin and even Elliot Yamin have proven that you don't need to be The American Idol or even in The Finale in order to have a measure of success. Add in those idols who have gone on to at least decent careers in Broadway and you can add quite a few more names to that list. So honestly it doesn't matter who wins this year. Sure the fans want their favorite to win (except some of us Cookie and Castro fans who think they'd be better off without the stigma), but we know it doesn't matter much.

Just the other day in the store while shopping for new music I saw Bucky, C'tine, Phil Stacey, Josh, and a handful of other former Top 12 stars on the shelves. (BTW I bought Sara Bereilles, Sixx: AM, and the Once soundtrack - highly recommend all three)

I'm all for opinions, but please remember that just because you think something is crap doesn't mean it won't be successful. Personally I think the Rolling Stones are about the crappiest darn band in the entire known universe. However their millions of dollars in ticket and album sales seems to prove that there are some people who find them appealing.

Jason has quite a lot of fans who will no doubt stand behind him. So does Archie, even if I do think he's crappy (though his level of crappiness doesn't rival the Stones).

DITTO!

BTW - I was just on the Yahoo TV AI site. They say that Maroon 5 and Bo Bice will be performing on next Wedneday's results show. Obviously, both of them have a great deal to do with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame theme...

A bit late checking in, but have to get my one-cent's worth out there.

As much as I like David Cook's voice, and think he will win this year, most of his songs are too loud and rocky for me.. The only cds I will buy will be Jason's and Brooke's. I love that folksy style the best.

Archie, I think was on the show at too young an age. Maybe by 23 or so, he will have matured. I wonder if he can try again later?

I think too, that the bottom age limit should be raised to let the kids grow a bit.. either to 18 or 20.

See y'all next week!

I've been fussing about that for two years now, since we had to endure Lisa, Parris, and "Chicken Little". But since a 17 yr old won last year, I think there's little chance of us seeing AI raise their minimum age...

Just a thought (Where is Will? oops ADD kicked in)

Wonder if AI is gunning for a Cookie win since last year the obvious "winner" was Chris Daughtry? And since last year's winner was young and hasn't had the success that Daughtry has, are they afraid that history will repeat itself?

That is certainly how Simon is acting. He's been lukewarm-positive for Archie and over-the-top for Cookie.
