Tonight we had an action packed episode of So You Think You Can Dance. Star choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo joined the judging panel, while the contestants would be dancing two routines tonight.
First up out of the gate was Jessica & Will, who performed a Jive choreographed by Tony Meredith and Melanie to "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" by Five Guys named Moe. As usual Will looks good but Jessica just seems behind and doesn't have the energy that Will does. Tabitha felt the fight in there tonight, while Napoleon noted it took Jessica a second to get going. Mary Murphy thought that they nailed the trick but still had a lot of mis-connections. Nigel Lythgoe thought Will was doing good, but Jessica was a bit lazy.
New couple Comfort & Thayne danced a Broadway routine to "Cool" from West Side Story. I think the two of them gel together as a couple better than their former partners. Thayne is a really good dancer. Tabitha likes the new match and felt the chemistry. Mary also likes the new partnership and enjoyed the number. She thinks that Comfort did okay coming from Hip Hop. Nigel on the other hand isn't willing to make those kind of excuses at this stage of the competition. He didn't think it was good enough.
Kourtni & Matt did a Hip Hop routine choreographed by Cecily and Elisa to "How Do I Breathe" by Mario. It seemed a bit bubblegum to me, though I'm not sure if it was them or the choreography. Tabitha thought it wasn't an easy style of Hip Hop to do, while Napoleon says it wasn't good enough. Mary liked it but wasn't jumping up and down screaming. Nigel wasn't sure if it was the choreography or the two of them but he didn't have anything to get ahold of. He called it Hip Hop on sleeping pills.
Chelsie & Mark performed a Jazz Routine by Mandy Moore to "Kiss Kiss" by Holly Vance (I prefer the original song by the way, much better in a foreign language) . I normally love their dancing, but I'm not wild about this either. I think I just don't like Jazz. Tabitha loves that they are really good storytellers. Napoleon thinks they perform well together. Mary loved it. Nigel said they are the first couple tonight with a connection.
Kherington & Twitch performed a Passa Doble to "Malaguene" by Brian Setzer. They danced as two matadors. I think it was the first WOW of the night. Napoleon wasn't too sure at first, but from the stomp they had him. Tabitha thought it was a slow build and they didn't embrace the character until halfway through. Mary thought it was full of passion but beyond that it was just okay. Nigel was entertained and loved the choreography but didn't think Twitch performed well enough.
Katee & Joshua performed a Contemporary routine choreographed by Mia Michaels. The song was "Hometown Glory" by Adele. Have I mentioned yet this season that I like Mia Michaels? It was a great performance and great choreography. Cat Deeley asked Joshua after the routine why he had tears in his eyes. He said that with Mia it's so much more than dancing. I couldn't have said it better myself. Tabitha loved the presence they had that commanded the stage. Napoleon loved the story and the assisted run. Mary thought Katee was amazing tonight. Nigel thinks that the two of them are one of the few couples that will make this season outstanding.
Courtney & Gev did a Hip Hop Routine to "Lights Camera Action" by Mr. Cheeks. I liked it but it wasn't really anything special. Napoleon didn't know if Gev was keeping up with Courtney. Tabitha thought some of the hits were too bouncy. Mary agrees that Gev didn't hit it hard enough while Courtney was killing it. Nigel thought it was fun and funky.
Jessica & Will's second performance was a Lyrical Jazz routine to "Alone" by Heart. They were using a shirt as a prop. It was actually the best I've seen them dance. This choreography I loved, even if it was Jazz. Tabitha tells Will he can take his shirt back off because he has nice lines (sure sure). Napoleon loved the first leap that was so high and amazing. He thinks Jessica is holding Will back a bit. Mary puts them on the hot tamale train. Nigel asks the audience if they want to dance with Will. He tells Will that there were almost more guys than girls interested.
Comfort & Thayne's second performance was a Waltz about long lost love. They danced to "Hov Arek Sarer Jan" by New Age Armenia. I thought it was beautiful. Napoleon says he isn't a waltz expert but enjoyed it. Tabitha liked the partnership but thought Thayne's last look was a little phoney. Mary loved it. Nigel liked the lift and thought Comfort looked beautiful.
Kourtni & Matt performed a Mambo choreographed by Alex DiSilva to "Ban-Con-Tim" by Super All-Star. Once again I didn't like them. I fear they are destined for the bottom three tomorrow. Tabitha is hot and cold on this one. She wants more from Matt. Napoleon wants them to get down and dirty. Mary thought that Kourtni was hot but the two of them didn't have good chemistry. Nigel thinks it needs to be sharper and that Matt needs to be more macho.
Chelsie & Mark strayed into familiar territory for Chelsie with the Foxtrot. They danced to "It's My Life" by Paul Anka (sidenote, Paul Anka doing Bon Jovi is just WRONG). I loved the dance (hated the song) Tabitha liked that having a feather in her mouth didn't stop Chelsie. Mary said it had some hard stuff in it. She thought Mark's technique was good. Nigel thought Mark looked uncomfortable but Chelsie was fabulous.
Kherington & Twitch were next with a Contemporary routine choreographed by Mia Michaels. She says it's the male side of a break-up. They danced to "Dreaming with a BrokenHeart" by John Mayer. It was absolutely beautiful. Have I mentioned yet that I love Mia Michaels? Tabitha said that Twitch redeemed himself. Napoleon said there's no way to go wrong with a good looking guy, a beautiful woman, a bed and flowers. Mary thought Mia outdid herself. Nigel joked that Mia was inspired by their relationship. He put them in his top couples as well.
Katee & Joshua drew a West Coast Swing choreographed by none other than Season Two winner Benji! They danced to "Shake" by Brother Yusef." It was good, but anyone who has seen Benji dance knows he can dance it so much better. But they were good for not having this as their style. Tabitha thought it was fun. Napoleon thought Joshua looked like a giant peppermint. Mary enjoyed it. Nigel likes that they can adapt to different styles.
Courtney & Gev were last up with a Broadway routine to "New York New York" as tourists in New York. It was very fun and had lots of energy. Tabitha believed they were in rush hour but felt like they didn't go down enough to make the high point explode. Napoleon thinks Gev found his niche here. Mary thought it was great. Nigel calls them the underdogs, saying they slip under the radar and get through really well.
I think that Kourtni & Matt are destined for the bottom three this week as I already said. Comfort & Thayne, though they did good, I think will be in the bottom. The last one will either be Chelsie & Mark or Courtney & Gev.
First- Katee & Joshua's Contemporary by Mia Michaels was amazing!!! I agree, with Mia it's so much more than dancing.
But I was disappointed when they did the West Coast Swing by Benji. No one can dance like Benji, but remember last year when Pasha and Sara did his West Coast Swing? They were great! So I'm sorry Katee and Joshua weren't up to par on this one. I've been waiting to see a Benji choreography again!
Chelsie and Mark are great as usual, but their performances this week faded because I am still remembering the "Bleeding Love Housewife" from last week. That was the best!
Kherington and Twitch were great in another amazing contemporary by Mia Michaels.
Also...
Thayne and Comfort were great in the first half of "Cool", but needed to be more powerful in the last half. Yes, I saw the powerful performance in the movie "West Side Story" and compare.
