So You Think You Can Dance threw the dancers and the viewers a curve as the show open. The first thing noticeable was that there were only 4 girls introduced, despite us being at the Top Ten level. Cat Deeley ask the audience who was missing, they - as did I, noted it was Jessica. Jessica comes out to tell us that she broke some ribs and can't dance for 4 weeks. That puts her out of the competition, but we still need another girl dancer tonight. Comfort, who was eliminated last week, takes Jessica's place in the competition.
Lil' C joins the judging panel this week along with Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe.
First up dancing as a new couple is Courtney & Joshua. They pick a Hip Hop routine choreographed by Dave Scott to "Skippin'" by Mario. Dave tells Courtney that she will be the bride of Frankenstein in the dance. It's a very fun routine. Courtney was able to keep up with Joshua's awesome Hip Hop skills quite nicely. Lil' C liked the choreography and thought Joshua killed it. Courtney did a good job too he said. He also liked that they added so much character to the routine, making it their own. Mary thought it was fun and loved the comedy that was thrown into it. She thinks that Courtney did okay, but Joshua stole the show. Nigel liked the character from Courtney but not the dancing.
Then we get a solo by Chelsie to "Pon de Replay" by Rihanna.
Kherington & Mark draw the Two Step choreographed by Ronnie and Brandi to "Kick Back" by Ty England. The pair of them didn't seem to be connecting as a couple, which effected the dancing. They just seemed off. Lil' C said they tried to attack it but went from the wrong direction. Mary said it was a tough number. Kherington didn't connect from the center and didn't meet Mark's connection. Nigel said this style requires partners to have complete faith in each other, while these two didn't. He felt that Kherington was leading in places.
Gev's solo to "Hello/Goodbye" by Lupe Fiasco was up next. He didn't seem to hit all of his moves right.
Comfort & Twitch drew the Smooth Waltz choreographed by Hunter Johnson. He tells them they need to get closer and get romantic. They're nervous about that. They danced to "Open Arms" by Journey. The connection and romance they had right, but they seemed to have concentrated so hard on that, that the dancing failed. Lil' C enjoyed it, but said they weren't floating like they should be. Mary thought it was lacking power and Comfort looked elegant but lacked the quality of movement. Nigel didn't think it was strong enough for a Top Ten dancer.
Courtney turned in the best solo of the night so far to "I Want You To Need Me" by Celine Dion. I love how she just gives it her all when she dances.
Katee & Will picked a Tyce DiOrio Broadway routine. He tells them that Will needs to be more conservative as a character while Katee should be a ditzy girl. They dance to "Sit Down You're Rockin the Boat" from Guys and Dolls. It was awesome. This is the best Will has ever been. He just needed to lose Jessica and get a real partner. Lil' C loved that they had the character and choreography going on. Mary was hopping on the love boat. She loved that they were right into character and that Will just threw his serious side overboard. Nigel liked that they were contained in a small spot yet had everything as big as Tyce wanted. He says that they are the most technical dancers, and are expected to deliver good things which they did.
Next up was a solo by Mark to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.
Chelsie & Gev were next with a Contemporary routine choreographed by Sonya Tayeh. She says that the dance is about soul mates and how they feel when they are apart. They danced to "These Arms of Mine" by Otis Redding. They really threw themselves into this routine, I thought it was great. Lil' C loves how some routines make him feel. Contemporary allows you to explore and emotion that these two really commited to. Mary thought they had amazing chemistry. Nigel didn't think Gev was as passionate as he should have been but Chelsie was great.
Solos by Comfort and Twitch were up next. Comfort danced to "Need a Boss" by Shareefa while Twitch picked "I Question Mark" by Wade Robson. Twitch's solo was the best male so far.
Courtney & Joshua were back, this time with a Rumba choreographed by Jean Marc Genereux danced to "Hero" by Enrique Iglesias. It was wonderful. Joshua really looks like he started as a Latin Dancer. Lil' C says he needs his asthma pump because that took his breath away. He loved that Joshua was just so confident. Mary thought that overall the whole thing was fantastic. Nigel was thankful that Joshua kept the shirt on. Joshua says that Will and Twitch are always getting naked onstage and this is just the beginning.
Katee's solo to "This Woman's Work" by Maxwell ties with Courtney for best female so far.
Kherington & Mark do a Tyce DiOrio Jazz routine to "Canned Heat" by Jamiroquai. They still looked off, even though they danced good. Lil' C thought that it allowed them to show off their balance but the lifts look too choreographed. Mary wasn't jumping out of her seat. She said there was nothing wrong, but she wanted more. Nigel said it had no heart of passion.
Will performed his solo to "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross. His solo was great as well and ties with Twitch's.
Comfort & Twitch drew a Dave Scott Hip Hop routine next to "Forever" by Chris Brown. I've been dying to see these two do Hip Hop together. They were awesome. Lil' C said it was Buck, which is when internal artistry meets external expression. Cat asks him who hit hardest, as the pair of them were having a contest. He leaves that for Nigel to answer. Mary said that the first number didn't go well but they didn't give up and stepped it up this time. Nigel said it didn't look choreographed and felt like you did it on the spot. He previously called Comfort the best Hip Hop girl they've had, but hadn't felt like she lived up to that until tonight.
Kherington is the last girl to dance solo, to "Breakin Dishes" by Rihanna.
Katee & Will dance their last dance, a new dance for the show. Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson choreographed a Pas De Deux which Dwight says is about the thoughts of two people coming together. They danced to "Imagine" by American Idol runner up David Archuleta. It was very beautiful and very difficult. As Will said, Katee needed to be a human gumby, which she failed at only one point. Beyond that it was perfect and gorgeous. Lil' C was nervous to even critique that. He loved that they dance with such conviction. Mary said it was a beautiful song and beautiful choreography and two of the most beautiful dancers she's seen. Nigel took some time out to give credit to the choreographers, calling Desmond one of the best modern ballet dancers alive today. He loved the routine, telling them he doesn't think he's seen such wonderful dancing on the show this season at the very least. He pointed out that Katee indeed goofed, but said it was a good thing otherwise they would never surpass it in their lives. Nigel hopes that America realizes how tough was that dance.
Joshua picked "Jam" by Michael Jackson for his solo and turned in a performance that gives me a threeway tie for first place for the guys.
Chelsie & Gev picked a Jive for their second dance, choreographed by Jean Marc to "The House Is Rockin" by Brian Setzer. The footwork was amazing, definitely the best I've seen on this show for a Jive. Lil' C tells Gev that Chelsie outstepped him. He thought that Chelsie led most of the time. Mary thought it was a great way to end the evening, but told Gev to not concentrate so much and have more fun. Nigel agreed that Chelsie was outstanding, but thought the pair of them did a great job together.

I loved Courtney and Joshua's "Bride of Frankenstein".
I've decided it's the kiss of death for anyone who picks the "Two Step" Texas or not.
Yes, Comfort and Twitch's Hip Hop was great. (actually I think Dave Scott broke Jessica's ribs so that Comfort could do his choreography with Twitch!!)
I loved Katee and Will dancing to David Archuleta's "Imagine". Will's body is just too hot!!
I love "So You Think You Can Dance"!!!
