The Top Eight on So You Think You Can Dance performed tonight. Once again they had two dances with their new partners and a solo to dance to. Tonight we got a new judge, Toni Basil. You might remember Toni from her mega hit back in the 80's - "Mickey." She is also a choreographer who is working on Bette Midler's Las Vegas show and is about to start working with Tina Turner on her new tour (sidenote, didn't Tina retire?)
First up out of the box were Will & Courtney. Their first dance was a Samba choreographed by Jean Marc Generaux to Che Nelle's "I Fell in Love with the DJ." The footwork was great, their hips were moving like they should and the pair looked good together. Nigel Lythgoe said that tonight would be a great night. He told the duo that when they weren't thinking too much it was fantastic, which was most of the time. Mary Murphy said they are Contemporary dancers but looked like Samba dancers. Mary agreed that Will's technique wasn't there at times, but loved the chemistry between the pair of them. Courtney earned a scream from Mary. Toni had so much fun she didn't take notes.
Before the solos tonight we get clips of the dancers telling us how they got started. First up was Comfort, who started as a street dancer. Her parents enrolled her in a performing arts school where she got into trouble all the time in ballet class for goofing off. She danced to "I Got This Down" by Simian Mobile Disco.
Twitch & Katee were up next. They apparently know each other from before the show, so they were happy to get to dance together. They would be dancing a Mia Michaels Contemporary routine first. They will be playing a boyfriend/girlfriend who are fighting. Katee is very catty and furious while Twitch is just Mr. Cool. It was so much fun. I'm betting Twitch loved that kiss at the beginning. They are such wonderful character dancers, actually just wonderful dancers period but they do characters so well too. Nigel said that it was fantastic and wondered again what goes through Mia's head. Mary screamed and loved it. Toni again took no notes. She liked that Mia infused some funk into the routine.
Will was inspired by the movie Dirty Dancing. He took classes then Debbi Allen took him on as a student. He danced to James Brown's "Get Up Offa That Thing." He came out in full James Brown mode. That was the best solo I've seen period. He's got a future as a choreographer as well as a dancer. He had all three judges up and clapping.
Mark & Comfort picked a Hip Hop routine choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon to "Party People" by Fergie and Nelly. They were playing two kids stuck in detention misbehaving when the teacher is gone. Mark, I think, isn't believable as a Hip Hopper in this one. His movements were too fluid. Comfort looked awesome though. Nigel was surprised that Comfort dances better when choreographed than in her solos. He told her she needs to find a way to transfer that to her solos. He also thought Mark was good, not as tight as Comfort but good. Mary thought they were both great. Toni says she knows how difficult Tabitha and Napoleon's routines can be because she takes classes from them. Toni tells the pair that they brought it all together.
Katee was up next with her solo. She started dancing at the age of four after her parents had her taking tap classes before moving to Contemporary. She danced to "Taking Chances" by Celine Dion (though the graphic on the show called it "Taking Changes").
That leaves the last partnership as Joshua & Chelsie. Their first dance would be an Argentine Tango choreographed by Season Two contestant Dimitry Chaplin to "A Los Amigos." I love Joshua in any dance that puts him into those brown pants. Nigel once again points out Chelsie's great legs and Joshua's big bum. He loved the choreography and the chemistry worked for him too. Mary thought it all translated in the right way from the very beginning. She also thought that Chelsie was so much sexier than the last time she picked this dance. Toni told them that the Argentine Tango needs to feel spontaneous and torrid and this did that.
Mark started dancing in musical theatre after seeing Phantom of the Opera. He was the only guy in his dance class. His solo was to "Creator" by Santogold.
Will & Courtney's second dance was a Slow or Lyrical Hip Hop choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon. The story is that Will is dead and gone, Courtney is missing him and gets the chance to feel him again and spend time with him. They danced to "Like You'll Never See Me Again" by Alicia Keys. This was yet another masterpiece by Tabitha & Napoleon. Nigel says this is the first season he's been emotionally effected by Hip Hop. He had the feeling that they were spying on Will & Courtney as they had a private moment. He thought it was very emotional and they were emotionally together. Mary has high expectations for these two, but this time they blew her expectations out of the water. Toni likes that America is getting to see street dancing as an artform.
Chelsie started dancing at the age of 9 in school but got serious around 14. She danced to "Damaged" by Danity Kane. Cat Deeley then asked Chelsie about her special day. Apparently today is Chelsie's 19th birthday, so Happy Birthday Chelsie!
Twitch & Katee had a Tyce DiOrio Broadway routine for their second dance. They would be dancing to "Sweet Georgia Brown." Katee as Georgia wants a man, Twitch, who doesn't want her. It was very fun, once again I love these two as characters and dancers. Nigel loved the routine and said he can see both of these dancers on Broadway. He points out that Twitch is the least trained dancer of the bunch, but he's always up for any challenge. As for Katee, there isn't a routine this season that he hasn't enjoyed. Mary thought it was terrific. She doesn't remember a night that they've had so much fun and so many good numbers (they have the right Top 8!). Toni disagreed to a certain extent. She thinks that Twitch has much more reality to him than does a typical Broadway dancer. As for Katee, she wanted to see a deeper rougher performance to match the deep rough vocal.
Joshua started dancing in the third grade thanks to his teacher. His solo was to "Shawty Get Loose" by Lil Mama featuring T-Pain and Chris Brown. Courtney's solo was next. She started dancing at the age of 3. Her solo was to "Where I Stood" by Missy Higgins.
The last solo of the night was Twitch, who started dancing seriously in his senior year in high school. He was in some music videos in South Korea where he choreographed some videos. He danced to "Go To Work" by Kay L.
Mark & Comfort had a Jean Marc Generaux Foxtrot for their second routine. Jean Marc wanted to make this one more jazzy and sexy. Comfort is Lady Luck and Mark is down on his luck. I thought it looked very floaty and glidey like the judges usually like, but apparently I was wrong. The judges (who I don't think have liked a Foxtrot this season yet) didn't like it all. Nigel didn't feel the chemistry and called it amateurish. Mary thought one of the moves was one of the worst she's ever seen. Toni didn't like the turn but pointed out that their earlier Hip Hop routine was great.
The last dance of the night was for Joshua & Chelsie who picked a Disco routine by Dorianna Sanchez. She is giving them a lift she has been trying to do for four years but hadn't found someone strong enough to do the lift. They danced to "Everlasting Love" by Gloria Estefan. It was incredible all the power that Joshua has. I held my breath for each of the lifts! Nigel points out what wonderful choreographers they have as Dorianna, Mia and Toni have all done Vegas shows. As for Dorianna, she must have been in heaven, Nigel thought, as Joshua has the strength to pull off those lifts. Chelsie meanwhile had the courage do carry it off too. Mary said the lifts were so tough, but Dorianna must have trusted Joshua to nail it. She also likes the way Chelsie exits the lifts and makes the landings work. Toni said that Joshua's lines weren't as long as they should be, but the spirit of Disco was there meanwhile Chelsie does have the lines so they're a great pair.
I've got it finally narrowed down to one of six that I want to win: Either Twitch, Will, Joshua, Chelsie, Courtney or Katee. As long as the winner is one of the six, I'm happy.

Tonite's show had the most favorites in one nite!
Including the best solo by Will!
Twitch & Katee doing Mia Michael's contemporary was amazing! And I can't believed they kissed!!
Mark and Comfort's hip-hop by Tabitha and Napoleon
Comfort is best at hip-hop.
Joshua & Chelsie's Argentine Tango by Dimitry. Their disco was great too.
Chelsie is always great doing ballroom.
Will & Courtney's second dance to Lyrical Hip Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon. I agree with Nigel, I've also been emotionally effected by Hip Hop.
I also totally agree.. Will's solo to James Brown's "Get Up Offa That Thing" was the best solo I've seen too!!!
Tonite's show was the best!!
I don't know who I want to be voted off this week... I guess Mark and Comfort.
