Indian Idol 4 - Boys Put On The Worst Piano Round Ever
|

With a completely confusing schedule, Friday night on Indian Idol 4 brought with it the boys’ second piano round performances. Confused about the elimination? I was too, until hosts Hussein Kuwajerwala and Meiyang Chang announced that because it was Diwali, the eliminations would not be happening until Saturday night. More from Ajay on that later. Can I just say that it is not difficult to follow a schedule?! Last week, they dedicated a whole episode for the boys results, and this week, they’re showing no results on the day they are supposed to. Why can’t Indian Idol stick to a schedule and follow it!?! Ugh, frustration!
Anyway, Javed Akhtar, Sonali Bendre, Kailash Kher, and Anu Malik were in their seats, and we were off!
Kuldeep Singh Chauhan – Jee Karda
Kuldeep played to his strengths by singing a Punjabi number (For my non-Indian friends – this type of music originates in the state of Punjab and has a distinct “flavor” to it. It is sang in the Punjabi language rather than Hindi, which is what most of the mainstream music is sung in).
Kuldeep sang well but it wasn’t as energetic as it should’ve been. He did go off-key in many places and actually performed worse than last week. It was decent singing, but a forgettable performance.
KK: This song was as energetic (I think that’s what he said) as it should have been. Maybe you sang on the wrong scale? (To which Kuldeep replied that he has a sore throat – Give me a freakin’ break!)
AM: The start wasn’t as exciting as it should have been. This is what we call a robust song. With these songs, you should have a smile on your face, and the song should bloom. You know that this stage is such that you have to work your heart out. All these little things like a sore throat have no value for the public. They just like to hear a good song. This time, I didn’t have that much fun listening to your song.
JA: I don’t think you were off-key, but you didn’t have the attitude which was needed for this song. It sounded like the voice of a defeatist. It was missing the playfulness and vibrant tone.
SB: You were missing expression.
Deepa’s Rating: 7/10
Prosenjit Kosambi – Yaara Dhol Bhajake
He started off okay, but that train derailed pretty quickly. This was absolutely the wrong song choice. If he had really wanted an energetic number, there isn’t a shortage of them. He picked the one that definitely does not bring out the best of his singing. And he ran out of breath throughout, which shouldn’t be happening to a seasoned singer such as Prosenjit. Crash and burn, in my opinion, but the judges disagreed with me.
AM: There is a marked improvement in his singing. He sang really well, in tune and with all his heart.
SB: It was fantastic. What a performance! You danced, and you jumped, and with all of that, you were on the mark.
KK: You’ve sang well, but you can still improve
JA: As everyone else said, you’ve sang well. But I’d like to hear those songs from you that have melody, because that is where the real test lies. (Here, Prosenjit said that he chose this song because he wanted to challenge himself and do something completely different from last week).
Deepa’s Rating: 6/10
Charit Dixit – Rind Posh Maal
Uh oh! Another crash and burn. This song has so much potential when it is sung live, and Charit simplified it to a point where it lost its magic. He also went out of tune in several places, and didn’t get all the words right (since they’re not in Hindi). The band was overshadowing Charit as well, but that is the band’s fault. Charit can do much better.
AM: You have a very sweet voice, but your performance didn’t have that special something in it. It failed to make an impact. I’m not very impressed.
JA: I didn’t have fun. You failed to capture the spirit of this song.
SB: It's difficult to hear the truth so I won’t go into that. You’re a really sweet boy and you have a nice voice. You have to work hard and do something about this because it’s a serious competition. You have the potential but you’re not pushing the envelope. Please push it.
KK: I agree. You sang flat throughout. You started off okay, but then you didn’t hit any of your notes properly after that. You should improve and focus yourself.
Deepa’s Rating: 5/10
Roshan – Dard-E-Disco
This episode is quickly starting to become one of the worst in the history of Indian Idol in terms of performances. First of all, Roshan chose a song that Javed Akhtar has written, which you know was a bad move. JA was going to tear him apart if he didn’t sing it right. Second, Roshan sang it at a slower tempo than it really is, so I wanted him to go faster. He was squeaky and nasal, and out of breath throughout. I did not enjoy this performance at all.
JA: You sang well and with the right mood, but you didn’t place the mike properly. I found that the throw and voice quality you normally have was less present today. But you sang properly.
SB: That was a performance. You interacted with the audience and that was lovely. The performance was good. I’m only going to look at the positive things about you right now.
KK: You sang well, and I’m really happy with your performance. Here I would like to say that maybe Javedsaab thinks something is wrong with your throat, but I will say that your voice has that characteristic to begin with. This is a plus point, because even when I started singing, they said that your voice is rough. It sounds like you are sick, so we don’t know about your song. But this is your voice and I’ve thought of your voice as exceptional from the beginning. And you sang with such energy that I was dancing throughout.
AM: For the first time, I’m seeing a new Roshan. Your voice has developed really nicely. And then some stupid couplet.
Deepa’s Rating: 5/10
Rajdeep Chatterjee – Ae Dilruba
Yay for Rajdeep! He gave the first of two decent performances on Friday night. This wasn’t his best performance, but it was pretty darn good, especially considering his competition. Compared to his fellow contestants (with the exception of Mohit), Rajdeep seems like a singing legend. Of course, there is no doubt that their awfulness made Rajdeep look that much more awesome, and it helps that he’s cute in a young 17-year-old kinda way. He makes you want to go “awwwww.” Rock on Rajdeep!
AM: Last week, when he was in the bottom six, I asked the people not to shatter his confidence. He’s a good singer and bringing him in the bottom six would break his confidence. Some stupid couplet. Outstanding singing. Superb, especially on the high notes.
SB: Rajdeep, thank you. I finally feel that I’m judging Indian Idol and have found quality. You sang really well. If you can improve your performance a little bit, that would be great. But your smile is so cute and you sing it with so much joy that the performance works.
KK: Please maintain this same dedication, even if you become a rockstar. I see a big star in you.
JA: This is singing. There are no complaints: no sore throats or illness. There was no lack of mood, style, tune, rhythm, or volume. We had been talking about all these things, but now that we have it all, we are happy.
Deepa’s Rating: 8.5/10
Mohit Lalwani – Bijuria
Mohit was the only other decent performance on Friday night. Like Rajdeep, Mohit also chose a peppy Sonu Nigam number that is quite popular with the masses. The only thing I thought Mohit shouldn’t have done is to simplify this song in the way that it did. He was missing a few harkat, (what’s the translation for this?). In other words, there are a few minor nuances in this song that Mohit overlooked and sang it straight through. This actually worked in his favor because he was able to stay in tune. So yes, he sang well.
But what I like the most about Mohit is that he has a full, heavy voice, kind of reminiscent of singer Kumar Sanu. On top of that, his performance rocked! I loved when he did a cute little thing with his hips in the middle, which you can only understand if you watch the video.
KK: I really liked his performance. You were singing with honesty and stayed in tune. Your performance was really good.
SB: Now I’m having fun. That was a superb performance. I wanted to get up and dance.
AM: Another couplet. I can guarantee you that you are in the Top 10.
JA: Really good. You had a lot of energy and your voice had a good throw, a good presence (that’s exactly what I wanted to say but couldn’t figure out how). It’s really very, very pleasant male voice.
Deepa’s Rating: 8.5/10
Sandeep Ubale – Tenu Leke
Last week, he got a standing ovation so expectations were high for Sandeep’s performance. But I can safely say that he was a major letdown. He was technically okay, but he didn’t seem to have control over his singing and seemed to be screaming at points. I can’t quite put a finger on what it was that made Sandeep’s performance a sore point. Overall, I was not impressed.
JA: You sang really well and your performance on the whole was energetic. But today, I found a little bit of overconfidence. On the high notes, I felt that you were screaming (See? I’m not the only one who thought this). You should have maintained the same level of sweetness in your voice on the high notes.
AM: Javedsaab, the thing you said about screaming, I took personally. You’re a good singer, you have a good voice and a lot of dedication, But be careful in the future. Don’t play the emotional card with the word overconfidence. Take it calmly and you have a good chance of going further. I also thought that today, you were screaming a little bit. I will tell the people to vote for you because you’re very hardworking and can go far.
SB: This is a very important point to keep in mind because if you can master it, no one can stop you. I think you were fantastic. You had expression. You had performance. You had everything. Just keep this point in mind and don’t let this mistake happen again.
KK: From the beginning, when you came to the auditions, you’ve been a favorite voice among all the judges. Today, your tempo was dragging. The reason is that you’re coming outside of the line of monitors and are not able to hear the tempo properly. You’re not becoming just a playback singer, but also a performer. You have to start preparing for that with honesty.
Deepa’s Rating: 6.5/10
Remo Ghosh – Jeene Ke Hain Chaar Din
Remo started off on the wrong note and it was downhill from there. His song did not engage me, and it was filled with too many flaws. Now we all know that Remo is going to go far in this competition because of regional voting. (Sandeep Acharya anyone?) Can I just say that the people are actually doing Remo a disservice by voting for him like that? Because let’s say that he does become Indian Idol - he will fall off the face of the earth like our past two winners, who got the title because of people blindly voting for their state or fellow police officer. I, for one, will be glad to see Remo go quickly but this is wishful thinking.
As for his performance, he was also screaming. He was sharp on the high notes, flat on the low notes and just awful all round. In fact, this song was better when Mohit, Rajdeep, Chang and the other male contestants sang it again so Remo could demonstrate a dance step from the actual song. But none of this matters, however, because he’s going to make it into the Top 10.
AM: I’ve said this before to our contestants that you were stretching too much so it sounded like screaming. You should feel the expression. You were not feeling it. You were just singing. I see overconfidence in you, which is dangerous. I want you to practice.
SB: Your accessorizing and embellishments for the song were good, but the main song had too many faults. You will have to work harder on that. I didn’t enjoy the song.
JA: I’m a little disappointed that Anuji let you off the hook so easily. There was one part that recurs throughout the song in which you sang off-key the whole way through. He spared you when he didn’t say that. But as far as singing goes, you were weak.
KK: Do what Anuji was saying – practice. Practice means to perfect each note. Indian Idol is a big platform. The second verse was completely out of tune. And as far as expression goes, it went overboard. You have to maintain your naivete.
Deepa’s Rating: 4/10
Keshav Prasad – Ada
Keshav started noticeably off-key. He picked it up a little bit after the line, and was actually half-way decent throughout. I could at least listen to him without cringing, which is saying a lot considering the episode in its entirety. Still, Keshav has a long way to go if he wants to become Indian Idol. I don’t think he can do it as he is too imperfect and has too many flaws in his singing. Overall, he also performed badly.
KK: I can’t quite translate what he said and do justice to it, but he basically said that to be involved in your music is a gift and that was the biggest thing missing from your performance. (I could be off on this translation).
SB: I’m very sorry to say but instead of improving, your performance is deteriorating. You’re on a stage where each performance has to be a do or die. You have to do it every time and that is not happening.
JA: You have an advantage that no one else has that you have done playback singing. So your singing on a mike should be better than all of them. But you’re making mistakes that we would not have expected you to make. Why it happens, only you know. It’s not my place to guess why. But it’s not right.
AM: It’s all about concentration. It’s all about focus. It’s all about winning this competition. You want to do so many things, but they don’t happen by just saying it. Your goal should be proper. Do you want to win, or just stay? How will you win? By singing like this? I don’t agree. No. I’m sorry. You have to work very, very hard to come up.
Deepa’s Rating: 5/10
Kapil Thapa – Musu Musu Hasi
Wow, I haven’t heard this song in a long time! Kapil was overall awful. His singing ability is limited because he hasn’t received training in Indian classical music. There were still places where he sounded really amateurish. He didn’t sound at all like he had been chosen from thousands of contestants. I’m not sure what the judges saw in him, but I’m willing to bet that it wasn’t just his singing talent that got him selected for the piano rounds. Another disappointing performance.
JA: I’d like to tell you that from the time of Mohammad Rafi (a legendary Indian singer from the olden days), there were many people who sounded like him that came to the music industry. But they didn’t last because people found the original in all of them. I see so much of Kumar Sanu (the singer who I discussed earlier in reference to Mohit), that it disturbs me. You sang well, and in tune and rhythm. But your voice is nasal so some of the words sound the same. Find your own voice and cut out the nasal sounds.
SB: I like Kumar Sanu. Javedsaab said a good thing. I like your voice, it definitely had a slight similarity to Kumar Sanu. And yes, you have to find your own voice. But I enjoyed what you did today. You had the feel right and it was nice.
KK: You went off-key in two places. This isn’t a complicated composition, and even you know that. But if a 6th grader learns to sing and play a guitar, he could learn this song without a teacher in the beginning. So you have to challenge yourself.
AM: Right now, I need light, spark, madness, passion. You’re in tune, but with that you need to sing in such a way that others sitting here would wonder if they can sing that song. I don’t get that feeling from you. I think today’s performance was okay. It was not an outstanding performance.
Deepa’s Rating: 5/10
Bhanu Pratap Singh – Kawa Kawa
And of course, they saved Bhanu for last. I will admit that I’ve had it in for Bhanu since the theater rounds so it gives me great pain to say that he started off pretty well. However, well into the first verse, he went out of tune and never fully recovered. At one point, it felt like nails on a chalkboard. He handled the scale changes pretty decently but a few small good things could not turn his entire performance into a powerful one. I’m not sure what everyone was going on about. I did not like his performance - at all.
SB: One of the best performances of the evening. I really had fun. You sang with feeling and you were so passionate about it. I had fun.
KK: The way that you’ve re-entered life, and the way you’ve progressed, I think you will become the Indian Idol.
JA: I’d just like to say that Rajdeep and Mohit sang really well. And I understood that the Deepak would go to one of them. (The Deepak is a silver coin that the judges were going to give to the best performer of the evening). But you’ve really given them a challenge. It had energy, clarity, throw, feeling, and melody as well. Really good. Of course the judges will get together and decide, but as far as I’m concerned, I will recommend you for the Deepak.
AM: Gave him the Deepak. This boy has kept trying for Indian Idol 1, 2, 3 and 4. He is an example of the never say die spirit. Outstanding singing. One of the best finds. I’m proud of this boy.
Deepa’s Rating: 6.5/10
Thus ended the most heartbreakingly disappointing performance episode of Indian Idol ever. Up next: Ajay with the results.

Really really awful.....You credited Mohit and Rajdeep but even they were not at all that good...It was a major let down after gals....and I am really frustrated that there is not even a single contestant behind whom i can throw in suport....Like an Amey or a karunya or atleast an Amit.....And whats wrong with the judges? I can almost beleive the allegation that their comments are scripted....Bhanu? Really?

Tell me about it. When I thought about who my Top 6 would be in the boys, I couldn't come up with more than 4, and that's counting Bhanu and Kapil, who I don't really like but added because I knew they would make it.
And yes, I do think that I gave Rajdeep and Mohit a slightly higher score than they deserved, especially Mohit, who actually should have gotten between 7.5 and 8. However, considering how bad everyone else was, I gave them those marks just for being the show's saving grace.
I think Rajdeep can be this year's Amey or Karunya, but we have to see several powerful performances from him, back to back. He has to really up his game.

Yeah, it really is. But I'm hoping it will get better because I'm pretty excited about the top 6 girls (two of my favorites - Bhavya and Shini - got eliminated, which was depressing. But I'm hoping one or both of them will be back in the wildcard round next week). The top girls this year are solid, with the exception of maybe Nirali, who is good, but not the best.
I'm pretty upset about the boys this season. Aside from Rajdeep and Mohit, I don't see anyone that really stands out. I think Prosenjit deserves to be back in the wildcard round. Remo needs to go. Pronto. Kapil needs to step it up or he's going to be a Prashant in the making. And I kind of wish that Parashar would be back. I liked him.
We'll see what happens next week. Is it true that they're bringing back 3 contestants in the wild card? I had heard that it was only 2. Does anyone know?

The performances were indeed pretty awful!!
And I feel the organizers (endemol) are spending way too much time on characterizing the contestantss ("chulbuli", "emotional", "playboy".....) rather than training them to perform on stage.
