Indian Idol 4 - Twenty Two to Twelve

Welcome to the penultimate stop before the Indian Idol Galas.

This time the show started off with Hussein and Chang explaining to the audience that today would be a first in the elimination history of Indian Idol 4 as today ten contestants would be eliminated in one go. So on that ominous note he quickly moved on to the Gals' Results.

The format followed was the Gals' Results followed by the remaining gals' performances and then to the Boys. My review will follow the eliminations first and then the performances.

Gals' Results

Before the results were announced, the boys' thoughts on best and worst were shown. Bhavya, Shini and Torsha were featured in the top three while Nirali, Megha and Aakansha were featured in the bottom three.

Without much preamble Hussein called on stage Shini, Saurabhee and Megha. Then he informed them that only one of the three would be going forward. Without wasting time he informed both Shini and Megha that they were out. Next on stage were Priyanka, Tulika, Sreejitha, Ananya and Aakansha. This time it three were safe and two eliminated. The eliminated contestants were Aakansha and Sreejitha. The last three on stage were Bhavya, Torsha and Nirali. To the utter shock of all present, Bhavya was declared as eliminated. Anu Malik promised Bhavya work. I believe Anu Malik himself is having trouble getting any work. Also, remembering the number of times he has made this promise over three years and how many he has fulfilled, I would request Bhavya not to have any high hopes.

Anu Malik – He strenuously objected to Bhavya being eliminated and he said it was one of the worst decisions he has seen in Indian Idol.
Javed Akhthar – He also mentioned that voting out Shini and Bhavya was wrong. He also mentioned that the voting pattern of the public is in the error.
Sonali Bendre – She just repeated what the other two judges said.

Boys' Results

As seen previously, before boys' elimination, the gals' opinions were shown. Rajdeep, Bhanu, Kapil and Mohit were featured in the top list and Remo, Kuldeep, Prasanjit and Keshav were featured in the bottom.

Mohit, Prasanjit, Roshan and Kuldeep was asked to come on stage. Out of the four Roshan and Prasanjit were eliminated. Next on stage were Charit, Remo and Bhanu, out of whom Charit was eliminated. Last on stage were the group of Sandeep, Keshav, Rajdeep and Kapil. Again, to everyone's shock, Sandeep was declared eliminated along with Keshav.

The judges all said one thing or another but it was clear that they were not that shocked maybe except for Sandeep.

The best thing that can be said of the eliminations this time was it was over pretty quickly - no dragging out and no major drama. The worst parts were definitely Bhavya's and Shini's elimination. Both were favorites of many people and had previously been declared as strong contenders for the coveted title.

The Performances

Torsha – Baagere Mann

She looked very depressed during the entire performance and on inquiry she said that she was feeling very bad about Bhavya's elimination.

Kailash Kher – Your first two lines were off key and energy was down for the entire performance
Anu Malik - I understand why your energy was down since your performance was the first after the eliminations and inspite of your wavering emotions you sung pretty well.
Sonali Bendre – Fantastic. You are a diamond. Don’t loose her.
Javed Akhthar – You have a bright shining Halo around her voice.

To be quite frank I was not that impressed with her performance. It was a flat performance as far as I am concerned.

My Rating – 7/10

Priyanka Negi – Main Kudi Anjaani Ho

Anu Malik – You started off shaky and you ended in a rough way.
Kailash Kher – I was very impressed with your singing. He also snubbed Anu by saying that at this stage one shouldn’t demoralize a contestant by saying what he said. Here Anu got into a fight with Kailash.
Sonali Bendre – Your singing was not fabulous but not bad
Javed Akhthar – You sung it in the correct mood of the song. But there was no clarity.

The main thing about her song was I hardly heard her. I don’t know whether there was any technical problem or not but it was a very unimpressive singing.

My Rating – 6/10

Nirali – Aaj Main Upar

Kailash Kher – Your singing was not upto the mark
Javed Akhthar – The brightness in the song was missing
Anu Malik – The main part of the song was “Tell me O Khuda” You went out of tune during that part all the time
Sonali Bendre – You hold yourself back. Next time just be yourself. That will improve your performance.

I couldn’t find any major faults with her singing but it sounded awfully dull throughout. It also sounded a bit slow paced than the original song.

My Rating – 6/10

Ananya – Main Albeli

Javed Akhthar – Your start was shaky
Kailash Kher – You lost sur in the second line. Your try was good
Anu Malik – You had a weak start. Your Antara was good. It was an okay performance
Sonali Bendre – You are like a little superstar. Your personality is good.

Her singing had the most clarity that I heard. However, she did not have a great performance.

My rating – 7/10

Saurabhee – Hawa Hawaai

Javed Akhthar – Very good performance
Sonali Bendre – Your growth from auditions till now, as a singer, has been excellent.
Kailash Kher – Here I didn’t understand a word he said but I am sure that was compliments.
Anu Malik – A bad couplet complimenting her

This was the best performance of the evening. I think she sang very well.

My Rating – 9/10

Tulika Ganguly - Tully

Kailash Kher – Wonderful singing. Wonderful energy.
Sonali Bendre – You worked the audience well. Superb
Javed Akhthar – Good singing. You have a harsh voice quality. But your finishing notes were not the best
Anu Malik – I loved the way you sang tully.

Though she has a nice style of singing, I think the judges overrate her a lot. Her singing is nowhere near the quality of Ananya or Saurabhee or Torsha.

My Rating – 7/10

Bhanu – In Dino

Sonali Bendre – Fabulous singing. You are an emotional person but that’s a positive part of you and that comes across in your singing
Kailash Kher – Very good singing
Anu Malik – Its an okay okay performance. I am not so impressed
Javed Akhthar – You went off key at certain places. But there is something beautiful in your voice

Before the judge gave their comments, a clip was shown where other contestants blasted Bhanu's excessive crying. Then, a case was made that Bhanu was right in being a crybaby. I have no idea why he is being marketed so much. I don’t think he is as great a singer as the judges make him to be. He did sing this song pretty well, though.

My Rating – 7.5/10

Kapil - Pukarta

After his singing, a clip was shown where Kapil's Guruji defended the criticism against Kapil. He mainly addressed the criticism that Kapil was nasal and that he sings in Kumar Sanus' voice. His Guruji mentioned that it is not Kapil's fault that his voice quality resembles Kumar Sanus and Kapil is not making his voice sound this way. Also, if he would try to get rid of his nasal quality then his singing will suffer.

Javed Akhthar – Your singing was not so nasal today and you were much better for it.
Sonali Bendre – If you sing like this nobody can stop you
Kailash Kher – Starting Sur was not correct. There were nice emotions in your singing though.
Anu Malik – You sang in a very Besura way. Have you ever challenged yourself?

I agree with Anu Malik in this one. Kapil always chooses songs which are soft and melodious and not at all a challenge. He reminds me a lot of Sandeep Acharya and Prashant Tamang.

My Rating – 7/10

Rajdeep – Main Hoon Na

In midst of his singing his mike went kaput. He regained his singing wonderfully when it came back on. Javed Akhthar thought he forgot his lyrics and congratulated on his presence of mind but was corrected by Hussein who confirmed that it was a technical glitch.

Anu Malik – You chose a challenging song. I will give you a standing ovation
Kailash Kher – Very good try today.
Javed Akhthar – Your presence of mind was great.
Sonali Bendre – She congratulated his presence of mind.

Somehow, I was not very impressed. He did sing it well but I hate the song. That could be the problem. I wish he would just open up and give a classic rendition like his opening song.

My Rating – 8/10

Kuldeep – Ae Zindagi

Anu Malik – Outstanding
Kailash Kher – Went out of sur in a couple of places especially start.
Javed Akhthar – Went out of sur during Mukhda
Sonali Bendre – I loved your singing

It was an okay singing for me. I was not overly impressed.

My Rating – 7/10

Mohit – Bachna ae haseeno

Anu Malik – You were fantastic
Kailash Kher – You went out of sur in the beginning.
Sonali Bendre – Your energy was outstanding
Javed Akhthar – Very good singing

I loved his throw and range. He is one of the few contestants who has tried high range songs and he did very well with his singing.

My Rating – 8/10

Remo – Dekho Dekho

Javed Akhthar – Well done
Sonali Bendre – This is definitely one of your better performances
Kailash Kher – Your antara was completely out of sur
Anu Malik – This was better than your last performance

There is no doubt this was better than his last performance but that is not saying much. His last performance was really flat. He is definitely the weakest singer and I wish he would be the one eliminated next week.

My Rating – 6/10

A couple of things I have noticed during this episode. Mainly I am very disappointed with the Final Twelve selected. There are some good singers in the list but I don’t find any one capable of having the versatility and the pure potential of previous year's contestants like a Karunya, Amey, Meenal, Emon, Amit, etc..

Secondly Sonali Bendre has started irritating me with repeating other judges comments. Her contribution to the comments have been minimal till now.

As one of our members pointed out, the technical glitches till now has been a major damper. The band has been too loud sometimes, the mike going off in between….I sincerely wish that from now on the show would go as smoothly as in the past.

My elimination probables are either Priyanka or Nirali from the gals and Remo from the boys.

Next week, the twelve will be reduced to ten and then increased to thirteen. Wildcard performances will be shown next week with the public selecting two contestants and the judges selecting one.

Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, which usually has singers of high potential, is not even bearable. Same with Voice of India, which was deemed to be the best last year. you wouldnt beleive it from the reviews you have read, but II4 is the best of the lot.

	The quality of singing of the II4 singers (final 22) is actually better than II3. Most of them know the basics of performing on stage and have trained voices. Ankita, Parleen, Prashant, Charu, Smita, etc were amateur singers and struggled to just stay in basic sur. I also like Kailash Kher -- he is huge step up from Udit Narayan. Kailash is not cowed down by Anu Malik. He also gives honest but constructive comments. Sonali's does not add much to the judge's chair except for some glamor. Infact, Javed has taken on Anu's mantle of being the most critical judge. I find his comments unnecesarily personal and harsh -- he should be more careful.
