American Idol 2009 wraps up auditions with a double dose

American Idol quickly wrapped up the auditions with a quick tour through two cities tonight. This year's auditions had some major changes, most notably the addition of the fourth judge Kara Dioguardi. There was an overall feeling of niceness throughout the auditions. Perhaps Paula Abdul's stalker being rejected by the show and killing herself in front of Paula's house had some impact. They also seemed to race through the audition stage, rather than dragging it out.

Thus we end the auditions with a quick tour though New York City and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

First up in New York was Adeola Adegoke, who compares herself to Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige. Adeola gave up her job to come audition. She sings "And I'm Telling You" very badly. Simon asks if she delivered the resignation letter. It seems she did. Simon tells her she needs to retract it as that was shockingly bad. Simon even offers to call her boss. Randy Jackson tells her that singing is not her thing. Even Kara tells her to keep her day job. She leaves, and Simon Cowells tells them to call her boss. Ryan Seacrest gets the boss on the phone. Simon manages to get Adeola's job back.

Over to San Juan now where Jorge Nunez knows he has what it takes to be the next American Idol. He sings "My Way" mostly in Spanish. Paula asks how well he sings in English, so he demonstrates. Kara notes the pronunciation issues. Simon says that is expected if they're coming to Puerto Rico. Jorge gets approval of all and heads to Hollywood.

Still in San Juan is Jessika Baier, who has been in over 700 singing contests. She came from Michigan to audition. Jessika picks "I Surrender" to sing, prompting Simon to surrender as well. Simon thought it was awful. Jessika is stunned that they didn't like her and begs to sing something else. The judges try to tell her that it just wasn't there. Paula noted that it was shrilly. Jessika leaves and tells us that the judges were wrong. This leads to our first montage, of people telling us how wrong the judges were.

While those in the montage were unhappy, Melinda Camille wants to make everyone happy. She is happiest when she dances naked in her room as her soul just releases. Simon wants to know what they should know about her. She tells them she wants to uplift humanity with her voice. She also wants to join a nudist colony. The judges ultimately like her and send her on to Hollywood.

Back in New York was Jackie Tohn who is a rocker. She's been singing since she was a little girl as her father was in a band. She starts out with "I'm Yours" but Simon wants another song. She is eager to please and wants to know what they want to hear. Simon wants her normal singing voice. She tries again with better luck. Randy likes the tone. Paula thinks she's unpredictable. Kara can't wait to see what she'll do next, prompting Eager Jackie to ask what she should do. Simon warns her against asking who she should be, as the window behind them falls down.

A montage of bad singers and comics leads to San Juan's Crazy Rocker, Joel Contreras. He says he's a creative person. Simon tells him he's everything he hates and calls the whole act bad.

Perhaps New York's comedian, Nick Mitchell aka Norman Gentle would have better luck. He sings "And I'm Telling You." Simon takes him to task for trying to be funny. They have a nifty exchange about being kicked in the 'nads and how much fun it is when Seacrest does it. Simon actually found that part funny. Then he sings "Amazing Grace" and turns the judges around. It turns out Nick can actually sing. Simon still says no, but Paula, Kara and Randy were all entertained enough to say yes. This leads to another montage, this time of good singers getting sent on to Hollywood as well.

A montage of bad singers in San Juan takes us to Monique Garcia Torres and her little brother Christopher. He's 9 and always being funny. Simon asks Christopher if his sister is any good. He thinks she is. Monique first sings "You Can't Hurry Love." Simon asks her to sing her second song "I Turn to You." Simon tells her it would have been better if she picked songs more in her range. Kara doesn't think her voice is fully developed and says no. Randy agrees she isn't ready yet. Paula however says yes. That leaves the final decision up to Simon (as his votes counts as the tie breaker). Simon gives her another chance.

Last up in New York is a repeat from last year, one I'm not happy about. Alexis Cohen, she of the long rants and middle fingers, has returned a changed woman. She thought she was funny last year, but she's kinder this year. She sings "Like a Prayer." Simon says she's gotten worse. Kara agrees that she's worse now. Simon thinks they have established that she can't sing. Alexis breaks out the middle finger.

Last in San Juan is Patricia Lewis Roman. She and her family have been partying all day as her mom and dad were married at the same location AI is at. She sings "I Wanna Dance With Somebody." Simon didn't think it was good enough, but did admit it's a difficult song to sing. Kara thinks she has a voice. Simon gives her 30 seconds to change their minds. She sings again, this time in Spanish. Randy says yes, Paula says no. We're left to wonder what Kara voted, but clearly Simon said yes as Patricia comes out with a golden ticket.

Nine people from San Juan and 26 in New York City went on to Hollywood. That wraps up the audition phase for this year. Next week starts the Hollywood rounds. I'm quite happy they didn't bombard us with two hour audition shows, highlighting the mentally deranged. We had a nice mix of bad singers and good. Perhaps the ratings might actually go up for the audition stages if they keep this up.

	Jorge Nunez - Yes, his spanish singing is more impressive. Melinda Camille - The nudist... very interesting person. Jackie Tohn - different voice, rocker chick, I want to hear more of her in Hollywood. Nick Mitchell aka Norman Gentle - He's funny, but i don't think he'll make it long in Hollywood. He'll be remembered for his comeback to Simon, "you mean the way you like it when Seacrest does it?" Monique Garcia Torres - I don't know why they thought she wasn't ready, I really liked her voice. Patricia Lewis Roman - Another one I thought sounded good that Simon didn't think was good enough. I'm glad the auditions are over and it will be the Hollywood rounds next week! No more bad singer auditions, now we can see the best singers try even harder to make it into the top 20.
