American Idol Top 7 does Disco

The Top 7 on American Idol picked Disco songs this week. We were spared the horror of a Disco mentor, as the Idols just sang with no clips or videos this week. Host Ryan Seacrest quickly took us into the action with our very first performance.

Lil Rounds picked Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman." It was an okay performance, but nothing very impressive about it all. Randy Jackson thinks she got the party started, but it all sounded so wild. He also thinks she isn't showing us who she wants to be as an artist. Kara DioGuardi tells her that America has been waiting for her to sing an artist like that, but it wasn't worth the wait. Paula Abdul defends Lil, telling us that she had no voice yesterday. Simon Cowell notes how sad she looks, and thinks this is her last week. Lil doesn't think she was karaoke, and signed her death warrant by adding that America votes.

Kris Allen was a little worried about Disco. His pick was "She Works Hard For the Money." He completely changed the song. I don't like the changes. It sounds familiar, like another song I can't put my finger on. Kara says that Kris took a real risk and it paid off. Paula narrowed down what song I was thinking of, saying it had a classy Santana feel to it. She then went on about Kris buying women's underwear or something like that. It confused Simon and myself. Simon tells Kris it was a polar opposite from Lil's performance, original and well thought out. Randy thinks it proves Kris is ready for the big time and he knows who he is.

Danny Gokey sang "September." It was a great song choice for him. Randy was worried about Danny's song choice, that it wouldn't have enough melody. He thinks that Danny worked it out though. Kara was worried about Danny and Disco too, comparing it to Simon wearing plaid. She thinks that Danny is an incredible vocalist though. Paula likes his sexy voice. Simon agrees with everyone else, but adds that he didn't get any star power from the performance. He thought it was overall clumsy and awkward.

Allison Iraheta performed "Hot Stuff," which she turned into a rock song. Once again I didn't like the changes made to the song, but she has an amazing voice. Randy agreed with me, calling the arrangement over-indulgent. Kara agreed with Randy, and gave the singing a 9 or 10. Paula tells Allison that the word compromise doesn't belong in her musical vocabulary. Simon thinks Allison was always going to be an underdog this week, but thinks the performance was brilliant.

Adam Lambert sang "If I Can't Have You." I can only say "wow." Randy loves that Adam changes it up when he is on stage. He thinks Adam is ready right now. Kara thinks Adam is brilliant. She loved the way he connected to the emotion. Paula felt Adam's pain as if he tore his heart out and left it on the stage. Simon would have bet $10,000 that Adam would do Donna Summer. He likes that the song was original and memorable. He also called the vocals immaculate.

Hoping to stay alive with "Staying Alive" was Matt Giraud. It was a good performance, but he had the bad luck to follow Adam. Randy didn't love the arrangement or the song choice, but thinks Matt can sing. Kara liked that he brought Disco back. Paula tells him that he picks songs like she bowls - sometimes a strike, sometimes a gutterball. This week was a strike according to her. Simon didn't like the performance. He didn't think it was original and it sounded desperate.

Anoop Desai ends the night with "Dim All the Lights." I thought it was a solid performance from Anoop. Randy didn't like the arrangement but loves Anoop's voice. Kara loves the song choice, saying it could be on the radio. Paula likes how great Anoop looks tonight. Simon calls it mediocre and a horrible version of the song. He thinks it was Anoop's worst performance.

My Rankings:
Adam holds on to the number one spot again with a 10.
Danny is close behind with a 9.
In a controversial move in the household, Anoop is third with an 8.5 (Dusty agreed with Simon).
Allison earns an 8.
At the top of the bottom three is Matt with a 7.5
Kris is second from the bottom with a 6.
Lil keeps on floating at the bottom with a 5.

	Anoop Desai's voice is magic and he sings very sweet and romantic songs (the Indian influence?) and it works for him. Not all singing involves shrieking and screaming/shouting (sorry -- Adam is great but I can't stand his high notes.) Anoop also looked great today! The other peformance that I enjoyed was Danny Gokey. Kris Allen was original but I thought he went off key several times....

	Curlio, I don't agree with you that Danny is No. 2. He should be way down. No. 2 spot should be Kris or Allison. Adam is undoubtedly the best. To me, Adam is already an American Idol...But Americans, don't take it for granted. Keep voting for Adam. We don't want to see Adam become one of 2 victimss going home...Vote for Adam!

	I'm pretty sure Simon understood Paula (on one of her most coherent nights in a long time). She meant he took a stereotypically female 'diva' song to do, and that girls are more likely to cross over and do men's songs. Anyway, I thought tonight was the best you could hope for when the theme is Disco. Lil: IMO, pitch was ALL over the place. She couldn't stick to a singing style, so it came off really 'wild' like Randy said. Kris: Wasn't really creative in making the song syncopated and Santana-esque. But Kris always brings a smile to my face, because he really shows that he loves what he's doing. Danny: Always pitch-perfect is completely correct. It really is amazing. He can be clumsy all he wants, if it comes with that signature voice. Allison: She can sing, yes, but have you noticed all her songs are in a pretty limited range? She can really belt the mid-high range, but the songs' slow parts show her lower register and acapella leaves much to be desired. She's young tho, that can come with time. Adam: He may be connecting, but the musical theater in him always makes me think it's just acting. And IMO, his high "shrieky" octave is not pleasant, to say the least. I'm really not sure what niche he'd occupy in today's pop music market. Solo wannabe feminine rocker? Eh.. Matt: This Justin wannabe looks awful in hats. And oh yea, unfortunately JT does JT better. And I'm not a JT fan. He might win a riffing contest though. Anoop: Painful last note. He just needs to stop looking dejected..even if he goes home tomorrow, go with a smile! Most to least favorite of the night: Danny Adam Kris Anoop Allison Lil Matt

	i am just a guest, way on top is Adam, followed by Danny, Anoop has a beautiful voice-just carries throughout, Allison amoung the four, the rest can go home, hope is Lil and Matt, just not feeling them, by the way I returned to watching Idol because of my daughter who is nine, I banned it since Chris Daughtry was voted off, but this guy Adam-just WOW-WOW

	Adam hits it out of the park.....AGAIN!!! What else can this brilliant artist do! Lil was amateur and clearly the least professional. There's your top and bottom. Everything else is in the middle anc gcan go anyway you want although I have Kris second. OK here's my list: Adam Kris Danny Allison Anoop Matt Lil

	Wow, a little surprised with your rankings this week especially where you rate Kris. I like it, tho. Adam is on the bullet train to win this season.....the guy is absolutely amazing. He is ready to be a concert headliner. I would pay to watch him for two hours.

I am surprised how blatantly Simon is on the "must promote Allison" bandwagon. Her performance was good but not brilliant.

	American Idol is getting boring. None of the competitors can beat Adam. It's not a big surprise if he wins this season. Will continue watching AI when Adam is gone. Don't get me wrong, Adam is still the best by far and I still like him though. But I could not stand hearing him shouting at every song.

	Adam is amazing--- Have to say that Lil was the only one that I was disappointed in big time tonight. Hope Paula's comments about her having no voice doesn't kick in some sympathy votes :((

As to the ratings, I just really didn't like the arrangements on several of the songs, though I admit the vocals were strong. I can see where others thought Kris did better, it depends on if you liked the arrangement I find it amusing that Adam is on top of our polls for who will win and usually 2nd or 3rd in our polls of worst performance. He's definitely destined to be a star - he's already got the haters! I think Adam can bring back a brand of music that I loved - GLAM ROCK! The sounds and styles of today's music are moving in that direction. It's just been lacking someone who can pull off those high notes (or as the haters call it, the shrieking).

	Adam is on top, Allison, Danny, Anoop and Kris follow. Matt, and Lil probably will go home. Anoop really can sing though he has been slated by some. I think he should at least come in fifth place if not fourth.

	Adam once again wows me. He is really talented and has such a great voice. I like his performance best tonight. Kris comes second. I don't like Lil's performance. It's boring..

	Inasmuch as I believe Adam will take the IDOL Crown this season, I must admit that if we were to hear him perform three songs in a row, listening to that incredibly annoying high-pitched, tongue stuffed, wide open mouthed shrill screaming, we would all become instantly bored and annoyed. Broadway, YES--Idol, NO! PS I think Paula wet her pants last night.

	I think there were three groups last night and they were pretty distinctly separated. The first is Adam by himself. As usual, above the rest. Second group is interchangeable in the 2,3 & 4 spots. Danny, Kris and Allison. Bottom three is Anoop, Matt and Lil. It would seem that Matt will go, since he was voted off last week and didn't improve things much this week. Anoop has been in the bottom 3 multiple times. Our household was also divided on him. I didn't like it, others did. We all think Lil should go. She's been a disappointment. I originally had her pegged for the top 3, but each week, it's just blah and she doesn't seem to know what she wants to do or how to please the judges. She was in the bottom 3 the last few times. So, I'm thinking that Matt and Lil go. I'd like to see Anoop go and maybe, based on some of the earlier comments, Allison will replace him in the bottom three. Whether its Anoop or Allison, I think that their vote totals will be closer to the middle group than to Matt and Lil. I happen to like disco, by the way, but no one really did a disco song. Everyone changed it. One last thing, Yes, Yvonne Elliman had the hit for "If I Can't Have You," but the Bee Gees wrote it.

	Lil Rounds - She's been on a decline as soon as she decided she was a wholesome church-girl diva. As it turns out, you kinda need to be able to sing pretty good to be that girl, which ... you know the rest. Kris Allen - His lips are a complete mess, perching and unperching uncontrollably. It's like a cartoon. He sings with a strange slur, too. I wonder why? Matt Giraud - This has to be the worst performance I've seen on AI this season, except for that one guy. But that guy had camp value. So what was the value in this one? Am I the only one? Anoop Desai - If Simon really thinks that was Anoop's worst performance, he's on a decline too. Not to mention all the blind praise he gave to Megan-Joy (or whatever), which he had no choice but to abandon at one point or another once it got too ridiculous.

	Oh dang--Yes Curlio, I meant Million on my number of votes--thanks. Really have trouble with this 3 hour time difference -not whining just sobbing my heart out (only kidding.) Takes a lot of keeping very very busy not to go on the Web before I watch it "live" at 7PM my time. I am such a wimp. I'm okay when it is only two hours different, but for some inane reason three hours is more than I can handle. darn senility setting in , I just know it. :)

	I picked Danny to sing "September" in the prediction contest! And I also picked "Hot Stuff" but by the wrong singer (I picked Adam, and it was Allison). So I got 3 points! Also 'hugefan' picked Lil to sing 'i'm every woman'. And Shenova picked Matt to sing "Stayin Alive". So there are 3 of us who picked the singer and the right song! But then I didn't get in my vote for part 2 for who would be voted off, which I thought would be Matt and Lil. So I would have had 1 more point anyway.
