American Idol hits the Rat Pack curlio
 2009-04-28 21:14:21
Television The Top 5 on American Idol performed Rat Pack standards tonight. This isn't exactly my favorite genre, but I'll try to be open minded.

Host Ryan Seacrest quickly takes us into the show with a clip of the Idols waiting for their mystery mentor. Jamie Foxx surprised the Idols at the mansion. He tells us that he loved everyone, though he didn't expect that. He adds that anyone who knows him knows he tells it like it is.

First up is Kris Allen. Ryan asks him what he has to do to win. Kris says that everyone is amazing, and they can only do what they know how to do. Kris picks "The Way You Look Tonight" to perform. Jamie would love to do a record with Kris. He thinks the audience is going to be blown away. It was a good performance. Randy Jackson calls it his best performance to date. Kara DioGuardi tells him he set the technical standard high. Paula Abdul thinks the performance was near impeccable. Simon Cowell wasn't as enthusiastic. He calls it "wet" and compares it to taking a well trained spaniel for a walk.

Allison Iraheta tells Ryan that it's scary being the only girl left with these guys. Apparently she celebrated her 17th birthday yesterday. For her performance, Allison sings "Someone To Watch Over Me." Jamie thinks she is leaps and bounds ahead of her time. He tells her to imagine her family as she sings. She finally looks good tonight. It was nice hearing her sing a ballad. Randy calls it the bomb. Kara thinks it was deep and emotional beyond Allison's years. Paula likes the innocent sensibility. Simon asks her if she thinks she can win. Allison thinks they all have a chance. Simon doesn't feel that belief in her. He thinks she might be in trouble, calling it mechanical.

Matt Giraud was looking forward to this week as he really loves this genre. He picks "My Funny Valentine" as his song. Jamie didn't really have anything to say about his performance until after they filmed. They called Matt back so Jamie could tell him to try changing the key to show off his full voice. I don't like the performance at all, it just felt pitchy to me. Randy thinks it was pitchy. He also thinks that Matt tried a bunch of different things that didn't come together. Kara didn't feel the emotional connection. Paula loves what he did with the song. Simon disagrees with Randy. He thinks this was the only believable song he's heard all night.

Danny Gokey wants to put a bluesy feel to "Come Rain or Come Shine." To challenge him, Jamie gets up in Danny's face and makes him sing that way. His performance was excellent, one of his best. Randy thinks Danny is the only one who could put out an album of songs like that. Kara was missing the rat pack swagger before, but Danny found it tonight. Paula calls it a stellar performance. Simon felt the swagger and confidence tonight, like Danny came out to prove a point. Simon also gives props to Jamie for bringing that out in Danny.

Adam Lambert adds a rock edge to "Feeling Good." Jamie thinks he's absolutely incredible and can sing with the best of them. I can only say wow. Randy thinks it was a little theatrical, but he's in the zone consistently. Kara calls Adam shocking, confusing and sleazy, but she likes him. Adam makes Paula feel better than good. Simon thinks that complaining about Adam being theatrical is like complaining about a cow mooing. He likes that Adam wants to win and comes out to prove a point. Simon also thinks that Adam's entrance, down the stairs, was the best they've had all year.

My Rankings:
Adam is on top with a 10. You expected someone else?
Danny comes in second with a 9.5.
Allison takes third place with a 9
Kris comes in second from the bottom with an 8
Matt pulls in last with a 5.

Don't forget to vote in our American Idol Prediction contest!

Other than giving Kris an 8.5, it's ditto to what Curlio said

I was actually rather surprised last night. As I hate this genre, I expected to hate most of the performances. They were surprisingly good. Jamie Foxx might actually have been one of the better mentors this season.

I was highly offended with Simon's comments last night to Matt and Allison. How could he praise Matt's performance and criticize Allison's? He needs to stop pimping Matt.

For the first time I had Danny ahead of Adam. My rankings are as follows:

Danny 10
Adam 9.8
Allison 9.2
Kris 8.0 The limitations of his vocal abilities were very evident
Matt 6.0 That is one of the worst versions of that song I have heard.

Matt to go home tonight.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of advice that Jamie Foxx gave all the contestants; who would have thought he was that talented.

He has to do that, otherwise their save was completely wasted. He wants Matt to stay to prove their save is an awesome thing.

I'd have to say that Matt is probably going home. Although all of the performances were very good, his was uneven and flat in spots.
I expected more from him.
Since he and Allison have been riding the bottom three consistently for weeks, they clearly don't have the support that the other three have, none of whom has ever been there.
I thought Allison was in the top 3, but, given her lack of support, I fear she'll be bottom 2 with Matt with Matt going.
But, he got more votes than her last week, so who knows.

The last of the bottom 3 is probably Kris since Danny and Adam were so far ahead as the best.
But, I think Kris' total votes will be closer to the top 2 than the bottom 2.

Interesting that, on Rat Pack Standards night, no one did a hit from Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra or Sammy Davis, Jr.
Not an expert on chart toppers back then and I know most of the songs were covered by the three, but I'm not sure any are known for the five songs performed.

adam lambert is the idol this year. he has the best vocal cords ever in the history of idol. if he doesn't make number one, he will still go on to bigger and better things and be able to go on that shopping spree

Jamie Foxx gets a 10+ for one of the best mentors ever seen on Idol.

Matt is probably going home tonight, as well he should.

Topic is opened right after the performance show (about 9:30 on Tuesdays) and stays open until 2 hours before the results show (usually 7pm on Wednesday). It's been like that since we started the contest. The only time a contest topic was started after the results show is when there was a part two to the contest week. This week's contest was posted 12 minutes after the performance show was over.
