SYTYCD kicks off with the Top 10 Couples curlio
 2009-06-10 22:24:15
Television So You Think You Can Dance kicked off the performance section of the season tonight, giving us our first look at the Top 10 Couples. Some of the dancers we were familiar with, while others were getting their first chance to shine.

Cat Deeley introduces us to our judges. In addition to judging staples Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy is Adam Shankman. Cat asks Nigel if he has any advice for the Top 20 Dancers. He tells them to grab the energy from the audience tonight. He says they will be nervous just like the judges. Mary tells us that while it's easy to watch extraordinary dancing, dropping two people isn't. She tells everyone to vote for their favorites. Adam has been a busy boy. In addition to being with the show on the audition trail, he has been working on three movies. One of the movies, Step Up 3D

First up are Jeanine and Phillip, who would be working with Tabitha and Napoleon. The story of the dance is about a couple who can't go to sleep without resolving their issues - much like Tabitha and Napoleon. They danced to "Mad" by Ne-Yo. I loved the dance. She was more fluid while he was popping very well which was a bit off-putting, but forgiveable. It would have been improved if they had met in the middle of her fluidity and his popping. Adam tells Jeanine that having no Hip Hop experience, the last person he would want to be paired with for the first time would be Phillip, but she held her own. He loves that Phillip has grown so much and is so generous to his partners. Mary also thinks Jeanine held her own. She was worried about the chemistry, but they were great. Nigel thinks that Phillip has a following already and Jeanine made an impression.

Next are Asuka and Vitolio who perform a Tyce DiOrio Broadway routine to "Hot Honey Rag" by BP Studio Musicians. The story is that they are making a silent movie. I wasn't fond of the dance. He wasn't as animated as she was and it just fell flat. Adam thinks it felt artificial, especially right after the last performance. Mary was disappointed with Vitolio. She thinks they both played it safe in the routine. Nigel tells them that their dancing was strong and the lines were beautiful, but they failed to put their personalities into it.

Karla and Jonathan danced a Cha-Cha choreographed by Tony Meredith to Lady GaGa's "Poker Face." The music didn't really fit the dancing. I didn't like the routine at all, but the judges loved it. Adam thought it was really good. He called the technique and lines beautiful. His only criticism was that Jonathan could have had a little more roll. Mary says she loves her Cha-Cha rough. Nigel tells them that they just exploded on stage.

Also dancing to a Tyce DiOrio routine, this time Jazz, was Randi and Evan. Tyce wants to see an emotional connection in the dance. Evan is worried about it, because Randi is married. He apologizes to her husband in advance. They danced to "I Only Have Eyes For You" by Jamie Cullum. I thought Evan was holding back on the emotional aspect of it. Adam tells them they are vertically challenged but they danced like they were 8 feet tall. Mary thinks it was smoldering, fluid, beautiful and believable. Nigel loves Randi's hair curly, and tells them that their control was fantastic.

Paris and Tony danced a Tabitha and Napoleon Hip Hop routine to "Let the Beat Rock" by The Black Eyed Peas. He was a little off at the end, but it was okay. Adam thought it was really good but the costumes were distracting. Mary doesn't think this will be memorable. She expected more out of Tony in his own field. Nigel agrees with Mary, saying Tony needs a lot of growth. He felt like they were both just doing steps.

Bringing back Bollywood were Caitlin and Jason to a number choreographed by Nakul Dev Mahajan. They danced to "Jai Ho" from the Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack. I love Bollywood dances, they're so different from what we're used to. They were fantastic, but a little out of sync at one point. Adam tells Jason that his hand work was superb and he made it look like nothing. He notes they were out of sync, but brought it back. Mary loved the strong handstand from Caitlin, and loves Jason's charismatic eyes. Nigel also thinks they were fantasic.

Janette and Brandon danced a Foxtrot to "Come Fly With Me" by Michael Buble, choreographed by Louis Van Amstel. I think the Foxtrot is so boring. Adam notes that America is sad to see Brandon dancing it clothes, but says it works. He loved the character and performance tonight. Mary tells Janette that her lines and legs were lovely. She thinks the lifts looked effortless because Brandon is such a powerhouse. Nigel calls Janette beautiful and graceful. He thinks it was brilliant.

Dancing a special Wade Robson Jazz routine were Ashley and Kupono. They played two crash test dummies. He was the older model who has been blown up a lot, while she is the new version. Wade says the message is to live life like you've never been hurt. They danced to "Felt Mountain" by Goldfrapp. It was weird to the max, but very interesting. They were great. Adam had to work at watching the dancing, but it was all so weird. He tells Wade he's a sick puppy. Mary tells Wade that sometimes she goes on the trip with him and sometimes not. This time she was all in. Nigel loves that Wade gave them characters that they adhered to. He also noted that Wade took them to a different world, but Ashley and Kupono kept them there.

Melissa and Ade performed a Contemporary routine choreographed by Mandy Moore. The dance is meant to depict the moment you first fall in love. They danced to "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx. It was absolutely beautiful. Adam says that every once in awhile on the show they get to see something special. The dance really moved him. He notes that Melissa, as the oldest dancer, is proof you only get better with age. Mary gives a scream, saying that everything was beautiful. Nigel thinks the routine was beautiful, but didn't show what a great dancer Ade is yet.

Last up were Kayla and Max dancing a Samba to "Jum Bah Day" by House of Gypsies, choreographed by Louis. It was absolutely wonderful. Adam tells Max he must be the luckiest guy alive having gotten Ballroom first and landing Kayla as a partner. He thinks she could have been born in a ballroom. Adam also tells Adam that she couldn't have looked that good without him. Mary screams a lot and tells them they are on the Hot Tamale Train. She is losing her voice, which Nigel is thankful for. Nigel tells them that it was everything they could wish for.

I'd put Ashley & Kupono, Caitlin & Jason and Melissa & Ade in my top three, with Kayla & Max just behind. As for who would be going home, it seems that we have a lot of Contemporary dancers this year, 11 of them as a matter of fact. I think at least once of them is doomed.

Welcome back!!
The dances were great!! I'm so excited to see more!!
I loved all the dances... especially Jeanine and Phillip. It's hard to choose who to vote for.
I would say my least favorite was Asuka and Vitolio. I can't tell if it was the choreography or their dancing that I didn't like.
It's sad to see anyone go at this point, with only one dance to judge them.
