American Idol 9 kicks off in Boston

American Idol started off by mentioning Paula Abdul's departure from the show, and that the new judge was the biggest fan of all the guest judges: Ellen DeGeneres.

The first stop this year was in Boston, Massachusetts. A total of 9000 people showed up for the audition in the rainy weather.

The guest judge for today is : Victoria Beckham, the former Spice Girl

The first girl they show was Jane McNamara, she says that when she first started singing 2 years ago that the American Idol game never liked her singing and that nowadays the game always gives her compliments. I am unable to say which one is worse; Her clothing of a tank top and hip hugging pants while she has a muffin shape or her singing. After her audition Simon asked if the window behind him was open. He also gave a resounding no, as did the rest of the judges.

At 10 AM the rain finally stopped raining and it was 16 year old Maddy Curtis that entered the audition room. Maddy is the 9th kid of a family. They tell the story that the 8th kid, her older brother, has Down Syndrome and that kids with Down Syndrome are misunderstood. Because Maddy and her brother always did everything together but of course the mental capacity were widening between the two the parents decided to adopt another boy with Down Syndrome. She has a good voice and looks quite cute. Simon said that she had a soul in her voice. Randy didn’t think it would be that good and that he really liked her. Kara said Maddy looked a bit nervous, which I disagree because she looked more than just a bit nervous. Simon said that there was something special about her because though she is only 16 years old, she isn’t annoying unlike most of them. She of course got a yes from each judge and was the first person to advance to Hollywood.

The next contestant they show is at 11:15am. He’s called Pat Ford and my neck hairs were rising when I saw him. He said that he was very outgoing. (in a very gay way, in my opinion.) he sounded terrible and while Simon tried to stop him he kept on singing ignoring Simon’s futile attempts to stop the torture. A resounding NO from Simon, Randy has one advice for Pat: Stop singing forever! Kara wanted a hug, Pat asked in return if that was allowed or if he would be jumped by security.

We now got a montage of a few good female singers; Jennifer Hirsh, Claire Fuller and Jess Wolfe. Each sounded quite good and all of them went through to the next round.

By noon only girls managed to get a golden ticket to Hollywood.

The next person to make it through was 28 year old Amadeo Diricco, He is from a family with Italian roots and the whole family gets together each week to have a good time. His voice was good, however I have a feeling that he might actually be in danger to start screaming instead of singing. Victoria said she really liked his voice. Simon said he liked him and that in a strange way he was his favorite audition of the day. He got thumbs up from each of the Judges and managed to become the first guy making it to Hollywood.

The next guy however sings horrible and through his nose. Derek Hilton is his name and says that he is a spiritual guy and has slowly “gradutated” to music. I think he might have meant gravitated maybe. Maybe he should graduate before gravitating to anything. He said he sounds like Chris Brown and The Eagles. That gets a chuckle out of Randy and Simon. Throughout him singing Kara had a few moments where her eyes became bigger and was amazed how badly he was singing. Simon says that Derek was channeling several people because he changed his voice throughout. He ends up saying that it was complete rubbish and that he doesn’t sound anything like Chris Brown or The Eagles but that he might sound like the actual bird: The Eagle. For some reason everyone agreed that Derek shouldn’t go on to the next round.

Now we get a quick compilation of 20 more people that all heard they were not good enough and most of them were of course crying after they came out of the audition room. Luckily outside it started to get better because there was actual sunshine.

We continue with a girl who calls herself an Anime Freak; Mere Doyle. She makes her own Japanese gowns and she likes Japan and hopes to make it big in Japan as a singer. Though she is kinda cute and energetic she mostly screams and doesn’t sing at all and generally just sounds bad. Simon still called it singing but that it was verging on terrible. Mere responds that he can’t say that because everyone else tells her that she’s good. Simon says that he’d love to lie to the moon but that he can’t. Then a few seconds later he mumbles “Wait, maybe I can.” She doesn’t believe she got a no from each judge and cries while leaving the audition room. Then a bit later she gets angry because she knows she is good and she has 14 years of training, then she becomes sad again. Though she might not make it in the music industry, they did show some of her gowns that she made and several actually didn’t look bad at all and she might consider a career out of making those gowns.

They follow this section up by showing three guys harmonizing and playing on two guitars in the waiting area and they actually sound very good together. They go on and show two of the guys Luke Shaffer and Benjamin Bright both with good control over their voice making it to Hollywood.

Andrew Fenton is the creepy guy of the day. They also show him getting ruder throughout the day and he says that the waiting around makes him nervous. By the time he enters the audition room all hope is lost and he pushes the wrong buttons on Simon. He had a decent voice, but his attitude really was a turn-off. Kara asked him if he was angry. He said he was a little annoyed from waiting all day. That itself ticked Kara off and she got angry at him and said she didn’t like him at all anymore. Simon mentioned that Andrew had a bad attitude. Andrew responded that he wanted to be confident. All judges agree that he came over arrogant and not confident. Kara looks at Simon and tells Simon that he’s arrogant but that he’s at least charming unlike Andrew. Simon sends Andrew out of the audition room with the comment Live and Learn from this audition. Kara ends up saying “Bye Bye, we won’t miss you!” in a very teenager like voice. She tells the camera later that she feels like she should go home and take a shower.

We now get 2 other bad male singers; Bill Bloom and Michael Ryan. Both are sent home.

Ashley Rodriguez is the next girl auditioning. She wanted to sing since she was 2. She choose a difficult song to sing according to Kara. She had a very good voice and soul in it too. Kara said she loved her and that she would do very good in the competition. Victoria said that she was her favorite of the day. Simon complimented her that it was a good audition and that some people got “It” and that she might have that. All judges wanted to see her back in Hollywood.

The last person making it to Hollywood on the first day was Tyler Grady. He showed that both of his arms were in a cast. This was because he fell out of a tree a few weeks before which was really bad as he’s a drummer in a band. He wants to be a frontman though. He has a good voice. Victoria says she likes the package; The jeans, The shirt, The voice. Kara said it was fantastic. Randy called it very good and Simon said he would remember the audition.

In total 18 people managed to get approval on the first day to continue to the Hollywood rounds.

Day two started better than day one, as it wasn’t raining. The auditions however wasn’t much better. It started with Randy and Simon being late. They blamed it on Simon wanting to sea where the Boston Tea Party was held over 200 years ago. Eventually an employee of the hotel where the auditions were held told Simon “We love you!” Simon replied that it took 200 years, which was really funny after the short history lesson about the Boston Tea Party.

The first hopeful for day two was 24 year old Lisa Olivera She looked like a very young Paula Abdul but definitely didn’t sound like one as she was completely off tone and key. Randy said she was a nice beautiful girl but that she wasn’t good. Kara said her high notes were really rough. Simon said he though she would do good when she entered but that it was the craziest version of Mariah Carey he ever heard.

The next singer was a bad one too. Ryan Keanne, He ended up being a part of a small collection of people being interviewed by the judges where they showed Simon having a hard time understanding the contestants because of their accent.

The first good contestant of the day was Mike Davis. He looked like a big guy and works on Codzilla which is a big speed boat in the harbor and they take people onto the water and race around in the harbor and also do 360’s. He started a bit off key but has a soft voice and good control over his voice. For some reason I didn’t expect that in him. Simon said he was a confident young man, without being obnoxious. (In my opinion a clear reference to the audition of Andrew Fenton from the first day) The girls bicker and Simon says that he gives a yes and that he’s taking a break and walks off. Randy says that he didn’t think his voice was that good. It’s upto the girls to decide if he goes to Hollywood and the show breaks away to the waiting area where his family and friends wait. Mike comes out with a ticket, which means both girls said yes to advance him, making Mike the first contestant of the day to receive a ticket.

In the meantime it’s already 1PM and it’s 16 year old Katie Stevens’ turn to do her audition. We get a story about her family and that she grew up in a Portuguese family. Her grandmother taught them all to speak Portuguese fluently. But also the sad news that her grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimers a year ago. Katie wants to succeed before the grandmother forgets who Katie is. She has a nice soulful voice. Simon said she sang the difficult song very well. Victoria said she had a very nice stage presence and Katie ends up with four yes’s for Hollywood.

On the other spectrum of the age limit is 28 year old Joshua Blaylock, He has a nice voice but his chin movement is already starting to bother me. Simon said Joshua had a nice voice if he would have been 14 year old but that there is no originality in his singing. Simon also adds that he should be more assertive and that he should try some. Randy says : “Try this: Simon shut up!” Joshua tries it and says “Simon…… shut up…. Please?” They talk some more with Joshua about his assertiveness and try to change him a little. He tries to fight a little for a spot in Hollywood as he feels that he is losing the opportunity. Kara and Victoria end up saying yes. Randy and Simon argue some more but they also end up voting yes.

It’s already 3:09 PM and Ryan talks about the cameras and explain that because of all the cameras and lights, and of course the four judges, that some people lock up because of the nerves. He also says that sometimes people wish they never started singing which if immediately followed by a collage of bad singers. They indeed should never have started singing.

We get another moving story about the next contestant. 27-Year-old Justin Williams was on a mission in Spain 7 years ago when he was diagnosed with cancer. Because of it he needed to come home to the U.S.A. He said you feel alone in that situation but that he really wasn’t. Today he’s completely cancer free. He has a nice very soulful voice. Randy kinda liked it and Victoria said he had a nice voice and presence and a nice smile and that she likes him. Kara said she was going to remember him. All the judges agree that he should go to Hollywood.

It’s finally time for the scary person of the day: Norberto Guerrero. He says Michael Jackson inspired him and wants to be an influence to other kids. He was completely off key and off tune. Simon ends up saying that he sang like a three-year-old and that he looks like LaToya Jackson. All four judges rejected him.

A better singer is Bosa Mora. His parents are from Nigeria and he has six sisters and one brother. He has a soft voice but a slight foreign accent. Simon said it was good but boring. Bosa said he can spice it up. Simon said he should have done that. Victoria tells Simon that she didn’t find it boring. Kara adds that boring isn’t the right word. Simon eventually votes No, but the other three judges disagree and give him a pass to Hollywood. Bosa promises to work at it.

The auditions finally are coming to a close around 6PM. The last contestant of the day, 22-year-old Leah Laurenti, gets a pass to Hollywood from the judges. She has a good voice but the small story in front of the audition gives me the idea that she might be from a very religious family. Randy called her one of the best he heard today. And that she had good control over her voice, a nice tone to her voice and a jazzy things going on. He didn’t expect it. Kara said she was a really good singer.

A total of 32 people from Boston managed to get a ticket to Hollywood over the two days. On the official American Idol page they have a recap from all auditions. They also have a backstage view of the Boston auditions available.

Though they said at the beginning of the show that this season will be a great season. I don’t believe Boston showed that it is going to be.
