The second episode of American Idol season 9 took place in Atlanta.
This time the guest judge was Mary J Blige. A total of 10,000 people showed up to audition and in the end less people would go to Hollywood than from Boston.
To get to the audition room contestants had to go from the waiting room on the ground floor and take the elevator to the 27th floor.
The first contestant taking the long road up to the audition was Dewone Robinson. He said the music is in his blood, because of a great uncle. He tells that he made a song up and people asked him if the learned that song in church. He was very proud to say to those people that he didn’t because he just made the song up himself. He decided to sing his own song in the audition. He starts out singing in a high pitched voice “Lady we’re not together anymore” then starts singing in a low voice he keeps switching voices and mostly repeating the same sentence. He says he became more nervous because after he started singing Simon interrupted him and asked what the title of the song was. Simon ends up saying that it was the worst original song he ever heard. Dewone tries to convince him that he isn’t that bad and keeps singing each time the judges say something. Randy ends up yelling for security.
A collage of bad singers follows up the first contestant.
The next contestant is Keia Johnson. She sounds decently good, or it’s just because all the bad singers before influence my judgement? Mary says based on the voice that she has to vote yes because she can really sing and that she had some good riffs going on. Kara said she had good vocals and Simon said he liked her. All judges wanted to see her return in Hollywood.
Now we were treated with a collage of good female singers, Miriam Lemnouni, Noel Reese and Tisha Holland all have good voices and because of that they all make it to Hollywood.
The first guy making it to Hollywood from Atlanta is Jermaine Sellers, he loves to sing and is a Church Singer. They play a small story that his mother has Spina Bifida. He has good riffs, a soft voice and is very soulful. In the mean time he does have his own style in his the song he is singing. Randy said from all cities that he has the best vocals of all. Mary is amazed by how much control he had. He gets 4 yes’s and is allowed to go to Hollywood. The only problem I can see with Jermaine is that he might keep singing Christian music and that generally causes a contestant to drop out quite quickly after they reach the top twenty.
We’re already almost done with the first day. One of the last contestants is 25 year old Christine Marie Agronow. She is outgoing, and also is a TV-show host from a show called “411 Show”. She sings very constrained and it sounds terrible. After singing she says she really wants to go to Hollywood. Simon replied that that’s not going to happen based on this audition. She complains all the way out of the front door of the building.
We see another collage of people that heard that they were bad and not going to Hollywood. They showed them going down in the elevator after hearing that.
The last person of the day was Venessa Wolfe. She liked jumping from bridges into the water and they show her doing that. She has a weird smile and every time she smiles she reminds me of a horse. I don’t like her voice because of the country twang to it and during the audition they cut to Ryan Seacrest talking with Venessa’s family. Kara said it was better than she expected and that she’s very authentic and a real country singer. Simon said he thinks she’s incredibly ill prepared but when she’s good she’s really good and distinct. She just needs to believe in herself. He says she stands out in the crowd and that he likes her. All judges give her a Yes to go to Hollywood.
Day two starts off with Simon actually being in a good mood.
The first contestant of the day is a 26-year-old Jesse Hamilton with a Southern twang in his voice and he says that he almost died 3 times. Eventually they go into it and with those "experiences" everyone has had near death experiences! He says he never sang in public before. Before he is singing all I can think of is screaming "ARTICULATE!" to the screen. He is very nervous and can't remember the lyrics to the song he's trying to sing. Mary is laughing so hard that she hides her face and Kara and Mary both try to play it off that Mary is very emotional and crying. Eventually Randy starts him off on another Garth Brooks song ("Tomorrow Never Comes"). Jesse is completely off key and doesn't have the right tune. Simon amazingly can keep a straight face, while the other judges are laughing their asses off. Simon tells him the whole thing was just terrible. All judges send Jesse home.
Next up is another collage of people that all got a no. One says that Simon is an A*hole. I wonder; do people that go to auditions expect anything else from Simon? Are they really that daft?
The next contestant is one of those people that put on a weird outfit to stand out. That certainly is the case with the "Human Guitar". She looks like a giant guitar. The first thing Simon does when she walks into the audition room is roll his eyes and giving a big sigh. Holly Harden is actually not half as bad as I expected her to be. She has a southern twang to her voice. Simon tells her she's great fun and personality but that the outfit is horrendous. Holly replies that she can lose the guitar outfit. Randy calls her funny and hilarious. Kara says the whole thing is crazy. Randy and Kara both say Yes, Mary tells gives her a No. Then Holly says to Simon: "Come on Simon, You're gorgeous!". Simon asks her in return if he looks like a person that would be influenced by flattering him like that. We get cut away to the waiting room where you can see Holly entering with a golden ticket. Clearly Simon gave her a thumbs up.
We are treated to a collage of bad singers, Lathan Davenport, Hansel Enriquez and Blake Smith. Simon has a remark in there that the singing is like a cat barking, it just shouldn’t happen.
Luckily the next girl is actually very good. Mallorie Haley has a soft but good singing voice. Mary says that in her opinion she can go to Hollywood because it was the best vocal she heard. Kara really liked her, Randy said she looked good and that she definitely is a country singer. Simon said it looked like she was having fun and that he liked her. She passed with the approval of all the judges.
For a change we are treated on a collage of people that were actually good enough to get golden tickets, they were all girls.
It’s 12:15PM and they announce it’s time for “Skii Bo Ski”, which is the nickname of Antonio Wheeler. His nickname is actually misspelled on his shirt but when the judges say something about that Antonio actually makes fun of it and says that’s why they have discount. Weird enough I actually liked his voice and audition but hate the person. Simon said the outfit put him off and the singing and dancing were both terrible. Simon gives a resounding No, while the other three judges pass him on to Hollywood.
The next audition consists out of two best friends, 19-year-old blonde Carmen and 18-year-old dark haired Lauren. The first impression I get of Lauren that if she would have more ridges on her forehead she could be playing a Bajoran in Star Trek, without using any make-up! When they enter the audition room and talk to the judges Simon actually mumbles “Annoying, Annoying, Annoying” under his breath. Lauren has a high pitched voice and sounds bad. Carmen however sounds quiet good and has a good control of her voice. Simon mentions they should be in a group together because they’re fun together but as soon as they are split up both of them become boring. All of them give a no to Lauren, while only Simon gives Carmen a no. Carmen ends up going to Hollywood, while her best friend will not be allowed to go there. Simon tells Lauren not to worry because he doesn’t think Carmen will be away from her too long. Both are crying when they come out of the elevator, a little bit later Ryan is interviewing them and Lauren says she will support Carmen 100%.
We get yet another collage of bad female singers. One of them is actually breaking up Mary. Another one asks if she should shut up, on which Simon quickly replies: “Yes!”
Simon apparently decided to step out for a few auditions and left the judging to the other three.
The first contestant to enter the room is Atlanta Police Officer; Bryan Walker. He likes his job but really wants to sing. He has a good voice and control. The judges have the same opinion and he is given a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.
The next person auditioning already got on my nerves when they introduced him. He keeps saying “Uhm, Uhm, Uhm”. He also said he would respect the opinions of the judges. 20-year-old Lamer Royal clearly didn’t think through his statement before he said that. He was more screaming than singing and it sounded terrible. Randy and Kara both try to convince him that he’s not a terrible singer, but that he really needs to work hard to find his good voice. Every time they try to give him constructive criticism he starts singing and is getting upset because they are calling him a bad singer. He even said that after Kara said he wasn’t a terrible singer. He absolutely refuses to listen to what the judges say and in the end is actually escorted out of the audition room by security. For that matter, the security even rides down the elevator with him. Poor security because Lamar decided to sing some more in the elevator.
To wrap up this stop on the audition rounds they have General Larry Platt singing his own song. “Pants on the ground”. Though Platt is a bit over the age limit the song is actually quite funny. Randy Mary and Kara are all three laughing their asses off. Simon says that he has a horrible feeling that the song could be a hit. Simon asks Platt’s age, and when the answer is 62 years he mentions that he is a bit over the age limit of 28 years.
Over the 2 days in Atlanta there were a total of 25 tickets given to people. While the credits scroll they show the whole waiting room singing “Pants on the Ground”. Hilarious!
Next week’s stop: Chicago!

I liked General Larry Platt singing his own song. “Pants on the ground”. I still liked season 7 "We're Brothers Forever" by Renaldo Lapuz the best. But this one is good too.
“Skii Bo Ski” Antonio Wheeler is interesting, I wonder how far he will go?
Hurry up Hollywood! I wanna see Ellen!
