Tonight is the night where the top 4 were performing to be in the top 3 which means that this boring season is almost to its end. This week's theme was songs of the silver screen with Jamie Foxx as the mentor.
Lee Dewyze was the first contestant and Jamie was working to be able to connect with the audience while singing. Lee decided to sing the song that Danny Gokey sang last year: "Kiss From A Rose". It started out a little bit karaoke, but he managed to pull it together and made it a quite good performance. Randy Jackson said that Lee didn't do anything with the song and that it was pitchy at spots and that the performance was just okay. Ellen said he sang it well but didn't do much to the song. Kara said it was one of the most difficult songs to sing but that it was still great. Simon said he agreed with Randy and said that it was verging on karaoke.
The second contestant was Michael Lynche doing a Michael Jackson's "Will you Be There". Jamie Foxx tried to get him to loosen up a lot. Big Mike actually walked around on the stage a bit instead of just standing there and it didn't influence his voice that much and he hit some amazing notes. Randy said he didn't love the song choice and said it wasn't R&B enough for Michael. Ellen DeGeneres said it was a bit predictable but that he's always consistantly good. Kara thought he played it safe and that he could have done tonight in his sleep. Simon's comment was that the song choice could have been better, but that it at least felt that he meant what he was singing.
After that performance we got a duet from Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze. they were singing "Falling Slowly". I really liked the original version and have played the song over a thousand times while driving to work. I thought this rendition was a bit lackluster as the duet part was completely ripped out of the original setting and they split the sentences up the wrong way. But they did sound good singing together. Randy said that it was amazing. Ellen called it great. Kara said it was one of her favorite moments of the season. Simon said he wouldn't call it a good song, but a fantastic song.
The thirth contestant taking the stage was Casey James singing "Mr. Robinson". Jamie tried to get him to really perform the song and sing to the audience. As usual his performance featured his vibrato very heavily. The whole performance felt like a cheap rip-off from the original. Randy wondered why he choose this specific song. Ellen made a joke about the little guitar he was playing but liked the performance. Kara DioGuardi said it was a good choice and that he was vulnerable. Simon said the performance felt lazy and that it lacked the substance to carry him into the top 3.
The last solo performance of tonight was Crystal Bowersox singing a song from Caddy Shack. Jamie said to never stop performing even when something goes wrong. Crystal was singing the song "I'm Alright". She sang the song very well and had the best performance of the night, but it still bothers me that she has her eyes closed most of the time while singing. Randy said she was definately an artist. Ellen said she made the song better. Kara agreed with Ellen and Randy. Simon Cowell said that after that performance that Crystal is back in the game.
The last performance was the duet of Michael Lynche and Casey James. They were singing Bryan Adam's "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman". The two compared side by side shows that Michael is the better performer and singer. It felt that Casey was a poser while Michael made himself look sincere. Randy called it nice. Ellen said "As a matter of fact: Yes, I have loved a woman!". Kara said it was incredible. Simon said that both duets were way better than each individual performances.
Curlio and both agreed on today's ranking that Crystal was best, Michael was second best and that Lee and Casey should be the bottom two with Lee being better than Casey.
