Rockstar: INXS contestants show off their rocking originals curlio
 2005-08-24 04:01:00
Misc. This week's task on RockStar: INXS was for the remaining contestants to show off their own original material. As Sprout so wonderfully recapped Sunday's show we need not go over that again. However it ended up that only Mig and Deanna would be performing their original material.

At the beginning of the show, it was announced that Garry Beers wasn't at the show as he was attending to a "personal matter." He will be returning next week.

Dave Navarro talked to the contestants about their choices. He wondered why Suzie wanted to drawn names out of a hat, then turned around and plead with Mig and Deanna to switch with her. He was impressed that Mig stuck to his guns and kept his spot performing the original. Dave was surprised that JD didn't fight for the original. JD said that as INXS is a rock band, you need to have a rock song. He then talked to Marty about his song choices. Marty, he said, tends to stay current with his selections. Marty replied that he felt INXS was trying to move to a modern direction. He feels that INXS helped to create the current dance rock genre populated by bands like the Killers and Franz Ferdinand. He wants to help fans remember that.

First up was Suzie McNeil. Suzie was terribly worried about being in the bottom again this week. She had been hoping to perform her original, but instead had to perform "Start Me Up" by the Rolling Stones. She figured that if she couldn't perform an original, "Start Me Up" was a good alternative. She didn't look as nervous as she did on Sunday's show. She was very confident and sang create. She ended up walking out through the crowd to where the other rockers were. They started singing with her, and she ended the performance by stage diving into the crowd. Dave thought she looked awesome and was shocked that she's ever been in the bottom three. Jon Farriss called the performance exceptional. Tim said she looked and sounded like she meant business.

JD Fortune was up next. JD seemed to have had a turnaround - being a bit nicer on Sunday's show. Could it be that he finally learned a lesson and stopped being arrogant? Ah, no, not really. He started out his clip by pointing out that had he done his original it would have been one of the best things the band would ever see on that stage. Then he said that his version of "Cold as Ice" by Foreigner would be one of the best things they've ever seen. I hate to say it, but I thought it version was interesting. It sounded a lot like Queens of the Stone Age (too lazy to look up the exact song, but it's the video with the deer driving the car). He was really working the crowd good. Dave liked Rafael's guitar work. He also liked that JD is confident. Andrew said JD did an excellent job bringing the song more current. Tim said that JD, more than anyone, understands what he's doing here.

Deanna Johnston was first up with an original, this one was written with Ty. Her original was titled "My Truth." It was a very dark, bluesy song. I thought it was a pretty good performance, but definitely still in her safe zone as the band pointed out on Sunday's show. Dave said the vocals were good and it really suited her voice. Jon felt the song was too safe for her. The song is about why Deanna started singing, to impress a guy.

Ty Taylor had Suzie, Jordis, and Deanna sing backup for his performance of "Proud Mary." Ty wanted to show his soul more, as he feels that is what sets him apart from the others. I thought he did wonderfully with a song that Tina Turner performs so perfectly. It's hard to do something that Tina has made so famous, by Ty did great. Dave called it "ty-rific" and said the girls were awesome. Jon called the whole package good. Kirk was surprised Ty didn't have Mig playing piano and Marty and JD carrying his bags.

Mig Ayesa's original, "Do or Die" was written about his experiences so far in the house. I thought it was a very good song, but it didn't show off his voice very well. It was very heavy and dark. Dave thought it was good to see Mig rocking, adding that if Mig had made him cry once more, Dave would have to rethink some things in his personal life. Tim liked the song, but didn't feel it was an INXS song.

Marty Casey performed "I Alone" by Live barefoot, which made me think of Brandon. I thought it was a great performance and a great song for him. He was completely awesome, and had so much passion in his performance. Dave said his notes weren't perfect, but he could care less. If it was up to him, he'd tell Marty to go over to the side and put his feet up. INXS didn't think it was so wonderful though. Jon wanted to hear more singing and less screaming, leaving me to wonder if he's heard Live sing the song. Tim felt it effected his pitching, but added that a rockstar can pull that off. Kirk wondered how the performance related to INXS, but it was good.

Jordis Unga was last up, performing "Dream On" by Aerosmith. She had trouble with one note in particular during the rehearsal. She did decent, but had some pitch problems. I thought that overall it was a great performance with less than perfect vocals. Dave pointed out the band was spectacular, but her performance wasn't. Tim didn't think it was her strongest, but thought it was nice to finally hear Jordis not do so well.

At the end of the show, Deanna, Ty, and Jordis ended up in the initial bottom. I think Jordis may stay on the bottom, as hers was the weakest performance. As for the other two in the bottom three tomorrow, I think that Deanna, Suzie, and Ty are all in danger. They haven't connected as well with the INXS fans as Mig, Marty, and JD have. I wouldn't like to be the one to pick the loser tomorrow. I don't think Jordis is in danger of leaving yet, unless she completely messes up the INXS song. I think Suzie may be in danger of leaving if she lands in the bottom, simply because the fans have put her there so often that INXS may not save her once again.

For tonight's rant (hey we can't have an article without one can we?) I feature INXS themselves. I'll start out with my standard "Yes I realize it's a produced reality show" disclaimer. That said, their comments to Mig and Marty annoyed me. Perhaps Mig and Marty were becoming too much of an obvious favorite winner, that the producers needed to bring them down. But their whole "your songs don't fit with what we are" thing annoyed me. INXS fans don't kill me, I do like INXS, but hello, how relevant are they to today's music scene? The music scene has changed so much, and if INXS thinks they can come out and release "Kick volume two" they are sadly mistaken. They will need to change, at least to some degree, in order to survive. Change is good in the music industry, as long as it's motivated by true artistic desire, and not just money (see: Metallica). To tell Mig that his song wasn't really an INXS song was kind of a "duh" thing to me. It's not an INXS song, it's a Mig Ayesa song. I thought the point of the original was to see what the rockers think they are themselves? That would be what I want to know, if I was looking for a singer. Mig's song, to me, would fit well with the band with a few modifications. As a Mig/INXS song would be a collaboration, it would be an INXS song then. As for the comments that Marty wasn't really singing INXS - THEY PUT THE SONG IN THE LIST! Live are as close as a band can get to heavy metal without being heavy metal. If you pick a rock song, most of the contestants are going to sing it as a rock song. If INXS is going to get so picky about how the songs they choose relate to them, perhaps it's time to switch all of the contestants to INXS songs.

The reason I always read through everything written here about the Rockstar search is that the "analyses" of each week's performances do not offend my sensibilities, and are very objective.

Keep it up! We need more of these.

Oh man I am too tired to comment, but I agree with you about Marty - MiG feedback! The fact actually is that the song selection is made by the producers and not INXS! Go figure!

Jordis - I love you to death, but that was simply awful! I am looking at bottom three here, unless of course, the Oz and Asian fans think otherwise!

Ok, I know I was supposed to reveal the surprises, but frankly I am glad I did not, because according to my friend, he viewed Marty, MiG and Jordis in bottom three!

I agree that Jordis deserves to be in bottom three, but MiG and Marty, after seeing them perform, I think NOT!

More about this later! I better get some sleep!

As always Curlio - we are on the same page! :)

Nice write-up!

This week I thought the best two were JD [surprise] and Marty, with the rest just not delivering vocally or otherwise.

To be specific Suzie was very weak with her song Start me Up, I don't see her singing Rock songs in her future. She did nice by having the others join in at the end and all, but vocally she made Mick Jagger out to be a male Whitney Huston.

JD on the other hand really put it all together this week, his vocals were right on with a good tone to his voice and good transitions, he also had great energy. This is the best he has done in many weeks and may be a fluke but I have to give him credit on this one.

Deanna tried an original song and had bland lyrics and bad back-up by the band. True they only have a little time to do a song but this wouldn't ever get a single play on the radio, and the band may be great at other songs but this was also their chance to show some original sounds and they messed it up too.

Ty I thought had great energy but his slow start was way off and then later the rest was too repetitive for me. If he sings with "soul" like this he won't last more than three weeks at most.

Mig had a better original song but it also had a weak back-up by the band, and I doubt it ever would get on the radio either. He looked good and all but this is a singing competition and he wasn't great on this one.

Marty launched with I Alone and pretty much devoured this song. Not sure what the band heard or Dave for that matter but he blew them away and most INXS songs. Maybe that was the gripe, this guy is too good in his own genre? I also have to add that Ty is not a fit for this band as he is also out of the INXS mold. Anyway Marty was awesome tonight, and at the end of the song he still had to come down to Earth while they all said he stank. Uh, yah right.

Jordis was last and left no doubt she isn't a Rock singer, it just wasn't happening tonight or the past few weeks for her. Not sure what she can sing but this wasn't her cup of tea tonight.

Anyway, that was my take. I also agree the band seems a bit rank with their critiques of what songs are and aren't INXS, they put the songs out there for them to do!

And also agree they have to move into the 21st century now, to find a replacement for the old singer won't work, they need new music. The real question is can they deliver new songs?

Why not have them write a new song and have all 7 sing it to see who does it best? May be better than expecting Mig or Deanna to do it for them in 3 days.

I think JD is just too vain. He definitely is not the best in this competition. He does not do justice to the songs he sings and he really needs a reality check. I applud Deana and MiG for performing their songs it takes alot of guts to perform an original not knowing what will happen. I think Ty should be the one to leave there is something creepy about a person who keeps on sticking his tongue out.

I still think MIG is the best fit for INXS. Even his song wasn`t great!!
JD(Elvis cover), TY(actor/ Gene Simon?) and Marty(too gotic)? I wouldn't buy any CD if they won!!
MIG will grow a lot after get togheter with INXS.

I love Marty, I do, but for some reason Manic Marty doesn't do it for me. Last night I felt my body getting tense as I watched HIM tense up his mouth and throat.

Jordis- ah, how the mighty have slipped. I still think she's phenomenal and having one bad night/note won't change that.

JD- what to say? He got out there and put on a show, but it left me cold. I didn't feel any excitement, just posturing.

MIG- I liked the song. I understand that it didn't sound like INXS, but as others have stated it was MIG's song, not INXS'. I still think he's a main front runner to fit smoothly into the band.

Regarding the criticism listed here of comments made by INXS: I think it's good that they are making these comments to the remaining contestants. Frankly, I think they should have been saying this stuff all along. If they had, people would have stepped up earlier, and it wouldn't seem to the 'audience' (us) that they are suddenly finding fault. After all, this is their future as well, not just the future of the contestants. Why shouldn't they be allowed to state what they are looking for in a new member/singer/collaborator? They know what works for them as a group and what doesn't.

Can't wait to see tonight's show!

Interesting that Marty gaves Kudos to INXS for the invention of dance rock, yet was then cruficied for his accurate rendition of I Alone. I do agree Marty tends to border on the heavy, and is probably too intense for INXS but how else should that song have been performed? I think they are being prodded by some CBS execs to be more contentious. Anyway Mig is the best fit for INXS - assuming they aren't planning on totally reinventing themselves.

Ok, I know I am a little late, but better late than never I say!

I re-watched the show, because my mind was darn pre-occupied the first time around!

Here goes:

Suzie

Definitely one of the strong performances, the thing is though, if she lands in bottom three today, she is out!

Insider’s info states that INXS were rather pissed at the fact that she pulled the weepy stuff!

None the less, since there was ‘Save Suzie’ movement, I think she might be safe, but to be fair, ‘Save Suzie’ is launched in US and she is always safe in US! It’s the votes from Australia and Asia that hurts her!

Here’s something that was not shown

Her family was in the audience and she actually went and hugged her sister and by the way, Dave did not say, ‘Suzie McNeal!’, his exact words were ‘Suzie M-F-ing McNeal!’ Like that’s going to make it on tube!

On basis on trend that has developed over past few weeks, I think she might just go home. It’s not fair, but that’s the way cookie crumbles!

J. D.

You know to be perfectly honest; I cannot be objective about him! I mean I try to find something positive, but if I feel like smashing his face every time I see him, how in God’s name can I enjoy what he is singing!

J. D. just when I think you are trying to change, you pull a J. D. on me! Am I surprised? Hell, no! I just think that you made my job so much easier, now I can blissfully finish working on your exposé!

People want him to get an encore; I have no comments regarding that! But honestly, I don’t want see Elvis oozing ‘I am too sexy for my shirt’ vibe! It’s hard enough to endure your voice and I can do without you stripping, although I know that’s what most of your fans want to see! So good for them!

Here’s what was edited

After the clip was shown and J.D. performed – Dave said something like I think we could have done without seeing the package (meaning the clip) and immediately J.D. looked down and checked! Oy!

Nothing would please me more than him leaving this show, but I know that’s not happening!

If he gets an encore, God bless the world!

Deanna

Ok, I might be in real minority here, but I loved it! I would buy it irrespective! I thought she sounded really great and if it were up to me, I would give her the encore! Would she go in bottom three? Maybe! But I thought she did great!

Ty

Ok, harsh words, but please bear with me! I hated it! Because I thought it was a rather bad Tina Turner cover! Ty, you have awesome voice and amazing talent, but you sir are not Ms Turner and I hate to say it, you are no Rockstar either! Why did the tongue make an appearance in this song? Why? Anyway, the performance was perfect for some kind of musical! Ty would be awesome on Broadway!

I am sorry, if people don’t agree with me, but that’s what I felt! And I can be totally wrong! Bottom three and here’s my thought, if Suzie escapes bottom three, it would come down to Ty, Jordis and Deanna! Now, Ty has two things working against him, it was his composition that landed Deanna in bottom three, so technically he is at bigger risk!

MiG

You know something – I loved the chorus! He was right that chorus was stronger than verses. Verses actually sucked! However, that said I know you won’t feature in bottom three! I did not really care much for the song to be fair, I mean yes, it was pleasant, but compared to Deanna, it was just ok!

Criticism: Just one! Loose those pants! A tip, if Dave likes your outfit, it is time to burn it!

Here’s what was edited

Dave embarrassed him by speculating what MiG might have done with Mrs. MiG! Oy! However, INXS told MiG that Frampton had called and loved MiG’s version of “Baby, I Love Your Way!” which is actually the reason why he had that big grin before he left the stage!

Marty

Oh for crying out loud! It was a ‘Live’ song! What did they expect? Judy Garland? You know I have a theory and I might be wrong, but since last two weeks, I have a feeling that they want Marty to screw up somehow! I mean what was with giving him Britney Spears? And why do I think this is a conspiracy? Simple! If Marty lands in bottom three, he has to sing INXS song and they might know whether he is worth it! If not, they can kick him out!

And with Marty gone, the competition becomes night and day! I mean look at the reminders;

Suzie – Shaky grounds,

Deanna – Not enough connection with audience,

Ty – Totally Theatrical, and

Jordis – Two bad performances, but front female runner!

So we land up with J.D. and MiG!

Yeah that is a difficult choice!

Whatever, I don’t think they are going to have it so easy, because Marty has a solid fan base and those who know ‘Live’ knows that his song was as it was meant to be! I would be darn pissed if he is in bottom three!

Criticism: Was it in my imagination or did he paint his toenails black? And Marty don’t get so intense that you scare the audience viewing you at home!

This was edited

Marty was darn nervous because his hands were shaking before and after the performance! Not really a good week for him!

Jordis

Oh Honey! That was painful! But at least you finished it! And Thank God, you did not blame anyone, but yourself for screwing up! Maybe this was the jolt you needed! I am dying to hear your INXS song! You are not going home, but you deserve to be in bottom three, but I still love you!

So that’s my take!

I have no top three except Deanna!

Bottom Three – except Marty and MiG anyone would be fine! – Although to be fair, I don’t think either deserves the top three slots, but they just might occupy it!

Ok, I don’t mind criticism, if it makes sense, the criticism given to MiG and Marty made no sense to me! In any case, I am sure they would step up and frankly, if you listen to the audio tracks, they sound good! Especially Marty! He sounds awesome during the verses! Husky!

Oh, I forgot MiG told INXS that if they wanted a song on the lines of INXS genre, he would be more than glad to write it!

By the way, did anyone notice that J.D. was the only one who did not bother standing up to support during most performances and MiG, who was standing even when rest were not really feeling it?

This cannot be attributed to some edit, it was ‘LIVE’! I never use the word, ‘hate’, but I can’t stand that ------! (Curses are wasted on cursed!)

Oh by the way, my girl developed a crush on ‘Sasha’ from the house-band! I was like Sasha who? I had to look for him the second time around! I can live with it!

I hope I did not scare you off Will! I was kidding! Cheers!

I just received Oprah's Mission Calender Inspiration and it has a quote by Katharine Hepburn, which I think J. D. Fortune should read and take inspiration from. And I quote Ms Hepburn, "I believe how I act today will affect the way I am tomorrow." Unquote!

I have to completely disagree with JD's performances...and why he's still there, outside the fact that he has a strong fan base. He was completely off....whatever it was he did reminded me of Tom Jones and Elvis, which is not what I want to think about when I hear Foreigner. Not too familar with QotNSA, I can't say much with that connection. But I saw nothing unique. His performances were great in the beginning, enough that I actually clapped with the audience. He's been going down.

As a huge INXS fan, JD is not a person I'd pay to see as the lead singer. Putting away all prejudice from his attitude, he hasn't had a really good performance...they've been dull or messed up. How he gets away with it????

In another blog I write, I said that the it was the best of the best....and the best....weren't the best that night. What's sad is that zeal and passion were seen with those who had been on the bottom three before, and those who had never been on the bottom three took it pretty easy.

I thought Deanna was great, and Ty, and Suzie. Marty was off and singing Live's music doesn't mean you can sing well. Marty does sing well. Mig-versital, but I didn't think it was a strong performance...Loved the song though. I don't think it was really fair to have the contestants write a song in less than a week, and what they came up with was really good for the time they had. Ty shouldn't play the soul card...it's not going to work for him. We know he can sing soul. Keep rocking, Ty!

Jordis really needs to get serious. She acts as if she's giving up! NOOOOOO!!!

can't wait to see the hour long show tonight!

No Sprout!
I'm here and to tell you the truth your (my favorite) and the other fine replies, the impeccable re-cap, and my own two cents worth have my brain in overdrive. I will even watch the show again to soak-up and digest it all. I just love the show and this site just amplifies the experience so much. I am excited about tonight, but almost wish I could put it off to relish the process even more.
Gosh, I wish I could see the whole thing, un-cut, that would really be fun.
INXS were "mates" with David H, they became part of what most only dream of, they have the giant arena experience! (I could probably not sleep for days with all that juice in my system) They are the real deal! To me I don't think anyone is telling them what to say! What would be their motive in purposefully miss-leading anyone! Listen to the boys!!!! (Again, I agree with Sprout)
I probably disagree with most about Suzie! I jut love her and her answer last week of "...bad..." was priceless. I think, Suzie and Deanna were the two best last night. Why are the ladies so critical of female rockers!! I'm sure they even worked harder than the guys to get here!! Ease up! Everyone but JD is talented; he is a fake and a poser! I think Mig and Suzie (please no stones) are the only two who could actually work for INXS. I think they will pick Mig!
I regret that anyone has to be eliminated tonight! I hate to say it but maybe, Jordis! It is a bit insulting for any of these to go before JD.

Curlio, thanks again for the site!!
I will try to sign up again, I must have done something wrong! I didn't get an authentication code!

HI!
Just found this
My take:
I sooo love Jordis and I thought it was kinda cute that she messed up last night. I have loved everything else she has done and her voice rocks. I kinda don;t want her to win so she can put out her own stuff.
Marty rocks, I am soo not into the music he sings but listening to him ,I so love it! I also don;t want him to win because he is so good at twhat he doesI don't want them to mess with it. and i found their comments dumb last night too, why put it in there if they don't want them to sing it? and its cool that hes creepy.
JD just gets under my skin, I know I am Canadian and should be all in love with him, but I can't explain it, but I never feel like I can hear his voice when he sings, and his performances are too contrived. I can't compare him to Tom Jones and the like cus well, I love Tom Jones and it is an insult to him (is that wrong?)
I think MiG should win it, he is my fave and I think he would be perfect with them. He sings well and its doesn't feel like he is stuck in anything.
I like Ty, but he doesnt feel right, and Susie does rock!
I liked both of the new songs, so I can't pick a bottome three either!

So I'm hearing a lot of hoopla about Jordis messing up. At least she gave it her all and tried. It's times like this that reminds me that a lot of people are full of it. Since the show started she has been nothing short of spectacular and now that she can't hit a very high note, we should vote her off. F**k NO! That douchebag: JD would never have the balls to even attempt a song like "Dream on". So let's cut the girl some slack! I'm a realist though and believe that there is no room for a girl on INXS contrary to the "PC" statement that Tim made a while back. So step it up Mig; cause nice guys finish last! (sometimes)

OK Ive been an INXS fan since 83 and have been avidly following this show. It was good to see some of the mighty fall last night to put the competition more on an even ground. Just some quick comments.

I dont get the fuss over Suzie. She has a great voice at times but I dont think she reinvented the wheel with Start Me Up. It was ok and certainly not deserving of the encore which she got.

Deanna did very well last night. I still dont get the comments directed toward her about staying in a safe zone. Geez most of them are in the safe zone. I dont think the band gave her enough credit for performing an original song. There really is no way she should be in the bottom 3 if you look at how the rest of them performed last night

I am a huge Live fan and Marty absolutely butchered that song. It was awful and he deserved to be called out. It was a huge step down.

I know JD is an *at times but he did a bang up job on Cold As Ice. Along with Deanna this was the best performance of the night

Jordis has been inconsistent in my eyes. When does she sing rock? I think she is more suited to ballads. That rendition of Dream On was simply terrible. It looked like she was a mannequin or something..very stiff and no emotion and that note on the end was unforgivable.

Mig was ok but Deanna did better with her original song. Mig is certainly a favorite but this wasnt his best moment.

Ty did a pretty good job but I dont think he is suited for the band.

My personal bottom 3 for last night were Marty, Jordis, and Ty.

I will be very pissed if Deanna is tossed out. No excuse for that off of her last performance.

Deanna performed her song the best. Martys voice is not right for INXS. If I had to pick he should go based on tonight and last nights performances

JD's new nickname should be "Stealth" because he just gets under the radar and let's his teenyboppers do the flying for him. I mean Marty over JD is a disgrace. I think that Jordis made a mistake, but a brave one and honed up to it. We need to start looking at the overall performer and not just a single performance as a reason to place anyone in the bottom 3. Therefore; Let's send the schmuck (JD) home once and for all!!!

I rewatched the show and quite honestly I thought they were all sub par last night. I felt Jordis and Suzy were below their usual good performances and Mig and Marty could have been sharper.

Clearly anyone can have an off night. The voting should be interesting tonight.

Every show has had a big highlight or more, but last night left me without the excitement. What will they come up with next to make it interesting? Lots of talent in these performers! Let's hear more INXS songs. We love the band and want to judge performance on what works with their songs and future.

OK, this is in no way scientific...but, if you put all the names in alphabetic order and elimidate the top & bottom two...you end up with the real meat in the middle...Jordis, Marty & Mig.

I heard tonight was an hour show, so I hope to get re-inspired.
