American Idol in San Francisco is surprisingly normal curlio
 2006-01-25 21:39:54
Television The promos for American Idol in San Francisco claimed that they would have the worst singers so far. Honestly I didn't find too much to dislike. I didn't even find that much that was weird. Tonight's episode ended up more good than bad, for once. It was a nice change. Even Simon Cowell showed his soft side, before stomping off in a fit.

Good:
Heidi Fairbanks from Oahu, Hawaii came in singing opera. She was great at the opera, but only okay when she switched to pop. All of the judges liked the opera, but had problems with the pop. I think she should work on the pop stuff and try again next year. She's got loads of potential. She was good, but ultimately Randy Jackson, the deciding vote decided she wasn't good enough.

Jose "Sway" Penala was the first from SanFrancisco to advance to Hollywood after a morning full of "no" votes from the judges. He even earned a unanimous yes, with Simon saying he was very soulful. Paula Abdul thought he had an excellent voice, and I agree.

John William was in the military for 9 years and only started vocal lessons a few weeks ago. The judges don't know what to make of his "act" as Randy calls it. Simon thought it was a bit over the top and says no. Paula says yes, of course. Randy said the other stuff was so wild and weird, like a circus. Simon says that's a bit harsh. Randy ultimately says yes, so John is through to Hollywood.

Katharine McPhee has a mother who is a voice teacher. Simon thought parts of her song, "God Bless the Child" were absolutely fantastic. Randy said she had the best voice they've heard this year so far. Simon loved that she's so current. She got a yes from all three.

Shawna White, whose dad was in a rock band, sang two songs. Paula asked for the second because she wanted to hear something more contemporary. Simon thought the first song was annoying and says no to her. Randy and Paula say yes, but Randy wants to know what's wrong with Simon, is Simon having an off day or something?

Jayne Santayana came in singing "Sweet Love." She had a fairly good voice, but Simon said the song was too big for her. Randy says Simon is having an off-day. Simon says he'll say no but "Beethoven and Mozart" will let her through. True enough, Randy and Paula let her through. This leads to a clip of the judges disagreeing, with Simon liking some and hating others.

I didn't really think Deborah Dawn Tilley was good, but she wasn't bad and she wasn't weird. She was somewhere in the middle, so here she is, in the middle. She was the freaky looking rock chick who ended up being the straw that broke Simon's back. She would have been good for RockStar, but not American Idol. Simon was focused on the look though, as it was so odd he couldn't focus on her voice. This ultimately led to Simon and Paula arguing over "you know who" because Simon thought the same thing about Him. Paula said that she remembered that, and Simon argued that she wasn't there. This ultimately led to Simon storming out. Apparently Simon was having a fairly bad day.

Bad:
Shawn Vasquez says he sings like an angel. He thinks he's destined for something big. Well he was destined for a great big NO from all the judges. He was so bad that Simon Cowell said it was almost non-human.

Matthew "Wolfie" Paulson compared himself to the runner-up of Season Two (regulars know that I won't say his name because I don't want to bring the wrath of his fans down upon me. Because even when you're not insulting "you-know-you" his fans get ticked). He said he range was like "you-know-who." Randy said it was terrible, even Paula couldn't find anything good about it.

Shalicia Carlisle only recently discovered she can sing. So she quit her job to come on American Idol. Unfortunately she can't sing. But Simon, being the nice guy he is, calls Shalicia's boss to ask for her job back. Shalicia can at least get one thing nice out of this. And see, Simon isn't as bad as all that.

Marcus Phillips is the all-terrain entertainer, but doesn't impress. Marcus takes his rejection fairly well though. And last was Manuel Viramontes, who drinks hot sauce and brought a statue of his favorite saint. Manuel just kept singing and singing, not taking no for an answer. He ultimately got the idea though.

Ultimately only 18 people from San Francisco went through. For those who were hoping the audition phase was over, we have another week to look forward to. Apparently Simon isn't in too good of a mood then either.

Does anyone know where the final audition city is? I guess it must be Austin or Boston. Thanks!

These were the audition dates:

San Francisco, California
Thursday, August 18, 2005

Austin, Texas
Thursday, August 25, 2005

Boston, Massachusetts
Wednesday, August 31, 2005

Memphis, Tennessee
Monday, September 5, 2005

Denver, Colorado
Sunday, September 11, 2005

Chicago, Illinois
Friday, September 16, 2005

GreensBoro, North Carolina
Monday, October 3, 2005

So the airing order is completely different than the others, I assume that they put the two most interesting cities at the beginning and end, and the two most boring ones in the middle, with one decent one seperating them. Means next tuesday will be decent, but be afraid for the episode on wednesday.

I thought one of the audition cities was Greensboro, NC? Wasn't that featured last week? Where did you get your city listing?

Was it me or were the audition in SF actually boring?

I frankly did not know what Simon was on! His diva act was unnecessary!

I didn’t think much of anyone but one gal stood out! Katharine McPhee! I think any individual who can nail Billie Holiday songs is amazing!

Although now I am wondering who was a better voice? Katherine or Paris?

Well I am looking at Katherine making the Top 10!

I am worried about guys this year!

You are so right Sprout! Lots of potential with the girls and definitely no "Clay" on the screen yet, maybe they will present themselves later!

One of the judges (Randy I think?) has said that this year is a guy's year. So maybe they've saved the best guys for last.

But yeah Sprout you're right. San Francisco was just boring! After hearing the commercial that we would find the worst yet, I was disappointed.

Curlio!

Well in that case they better pimp some blokes, I can’t remember many of the males selected this time around! And the ones I can remember are ones I would love to forget!

The fact is if they are going to follow Gals only – Guys only format before Top 12, the scales would not be even!

So I hope Will and you are right that some guys might appear by the end!

Considering only Anthony and Constantine were hyped, Bo minus the drama made his presence felt by just singing and hence I liked him!

So who knows? Maybe some guy with right panache might just touch the soul! Looking forward to that! :)
