American Idol in Las Vegas draws freaks

American Idol tonight showed off what they found in Las Vegas. Of course there were a lot of freaks, as usual. What was rare was the lack of talent. A mere 11 people from the Las Vegas auditions made it through to the Hollywood round of the competition. That's the lowest number so far.
As we have so few to go into the good section of the recap, I'll simply recap in order of appearance.
Reggae guy Alexia "Dylon" Lincheta came in wearing an extremely fake looking wig, and speaking in a bad fake Jamaican accent. His t-shirt said "Jamaica Good Music" which he thought was a very funny play on words. No, he's not from anywhere near Jamaica, he's from Bakersfield, California (home to rock band Korn, I might add). Randy Jackson called him on the fake accent. All three judges said no.
A guy dressed as a joker got an immediate "no" from Simon, before even singing. I don't think Simon was too amused with the gimmicks this time around.
Up next was psychic Bobbie May, a return from last year. As you might remember (unless you're lucky enough to have blocked out her performance last year), Bobbie May claims to know things. Last year she "knew" she would be in the top 10. Too bad she couldn't sing at all. This year she returned with her sister, Erica Davis. Bobbie says Erica oursings her, Simon Cowell replied that it wasn't that hard to do. After hearing her sing, Simon agreed that Erica was better than Bobbie. Randy says that singing iso ut for the family. Simon asked Bobbie if she could just watch American Idol next year.
Belly dancer Mecca Madison was rather scary for me. She's 18, but she looks younger than my 13 year old niece. She's very pretty though, and polite as well. Paula Abdul said that Mecca was like a breath of fresh air. Randy said she has a good voice. Mecca got a unanimous yes from the judges. I look forward to hearing more from her.
Scary demon rocker guy Ryan Hyatt claimed to be unique. He said he would stand out, and he definitely did. He sounded like he was channeling satan as he screamed. One can't really call what he did "singing." I'd love to see him in a heavy metal band, but American Idol material he is not. He came in cursing, then said he's not really a family guy when Paula said it was a family show. Simon called him really frightening.
Heather Ward works as a guidance counsellor of sorts for a men's prison facility. When she said she has handcuffs, Randy joked that Simon has been handcuffed before. Simon fired back that he usually does the cuffing (note to Simon, my wrists are yours anytime). She dressed as a cowgirl, and sang "Redneck Woman." Simon thought it was interesting. Randy gave her a yes, Paula gave her a no, leaving the decision in Simon's hands. Luckily Simon said yes. I don't know if she'll be that great, but she's fun.
Jason Andino works as a Gondolier in Las Vegas. I thought he was pretty decent, but he got a no, even from Paula. The crazy guy from last year, who did the stabbing motions when he sings came back again. Simon asked him if he works with knives, and crazy guy said he drove a bus. Simon commented that a bus is still a weapon. He got an immediate no.
Anthony Andolino lives with his girlfriend. Together the pair have 75 animals they have rescued from various fates. Paula thought his voice was more theatrical than pop. Randy and Paula both said no. Simon was a gentleman and kept his comment about the guy's weight quiet until the guy left. For Simon, that's practically polite!
Twins Marnelli and Maureen Pearson, who are fans of American Idol and Kelly Clarkson, sang "Dreams." They got a no vote all around. David Mandzak lives in Las Vegas and claims to sing and dance. He got Paula giggling with his version of "As Long As You Love Me." Paula and Randy sang along at the end.
Up next was a video montage of "CSI: Criminal Singers Investigated" showing some bad singers along with their "crime" and "punishment." It was actually rather funny for a video montage.
Foreigner Haggai Yedidya is definitely happy to be in America. He came dressed in a shirt full of American Flags and sang "God Bless the USA." Randy said the voice wasn't good. Simon said the voice was terrible and when Paula started to object, Randy jumped in and agreed with Simon. Haggai was definitely bad. He claimed to have perfect pitch. That still didn't impress the judges.
Princess Brewer admits that she's conceited, blunt, and sassy. She compared herself to Aretha Franklin. That is, naturally, a setup for bad bad things. Bad things is indeed what it led to, as her singing was horrid. Simon just sat there, muttering for someone to shut her up. Finally it ended, and Paula said there were sweet moments in there. Simon fired back "yeah, the end." He said it was one of the worst today, that just when you thought it wouldn't get any worse it did.
"I Will Survive" was the featured sound montage for today's show. Honestly I thought some of the singers weren't that bad, I liked the guy who didn't know the words and sang that he didn't know the words.
The last montage was a clip of all the freaky hairstyles the judges got to see in Las Vegas, leading up to grey-haired Taylor Hicks. Taylor started going grey when he was 14 or 15. He sang a song by Sam Cooke. Paula says that he can sing, and asks for 20 seconds of something else. Randy likes him, but Simon isn't impressed with the image. Ultimately Paula and Randy win out, sending the guy on to Hollywood.
Tomorrow night's audition is in Texas. I presume it's not our last night of auditions, as we still have Boston and Memphis to go yet. JOY! Another week of torture to look forward to.

Anyone know how many lucky pop hopefuls have made it through so far?
It seems to be less than last year, but I would have thought they need the same for each series for the hollywood stage.

11 from Las Vegas
18 from San Francisco
33 from Greensboro
37 from Denver
34 from Chicago
That's a total of 133, with 2 more stops to go next week. Don't forget there are several stages to the Hollywood round, and they end up with a nice round number only later in the Hollywood round.

Who has been your favourite to win so far? I think they tend to keep the real contenders for the final hidden until later on.
I know this sounds stupid but the mad guy who talks to trees was brilliant. I know he's not a serious contender but he's cool!

I haven't really had a real favorite so far. There are a couple I'm looking forward to hearing more from, Mecca and Paris come to mind. I'll have more of an idea who I like once we get to Hollywood.

Oh Sweet God! That was painful! Mecca was a saving grace but other than that nothing really excited me! Curlio you are right she looks very young!
How in God’s name can anyone screw up “That’s What Friends Are For”? My gal and I can be called tone deaf and yet we can sing that song in tune! Seriously who screws that song?
Joy is right! Three more tortuous episodes before torture would turn to murder in the theatre round! I seriously see no hope for guys! Oh well gals are great! Maybe they should do a Top 12 with gals!

Wait - is that MemphisMomma back again??? what joy!! what joy!!! I don't think they have a show from Memphis - they canceled the original auditions due to Hurricane Katrina and all the hotel rooms were filled with refugees. The FOX people were furious because the hotel/motel people were going to kick the families out in the street so all those horrible can't sing wannabee's could sleep under a roof and they moved to another city - but I never heard where it was .... I don't think they did it here. ALthough as much attention as I pay to local news - they could have had the freaking thing in my front yard and I wouldn't have noticed ....
so how is everybody? sorry I'm late back to the boards - life just flat gets in the way sometimes

Well, about Las Vegas, like my ole college professor said about our school, which could apply to LV talent, what they needs is a well insured fire! I found last night far less entertaining.....

Because until now most of the girls were better than the guys ( or at least the ones we have seen..) Maybe the guys are soo much better this year that they want to focus more on the girls so they get a small head start. No-one is waiting for a final 6 consisting of only guys.
Essentially only Mecca Madison and Taylor Hicks impressed me at Las Vegas..

i am so ready for the good stuff to begin. i really wasn't impressed after last night's show. i'm tired of the people who are obviously just trying to get on tv...bring on the real talent! i did enjoy mecca and actually thought the gondola boy was pretty good. compared to some of the others that have been put through (i.e. the crazy guy who talks to animals) he's quite good!
oh, and curlio, i have an account here, but am unable to login...maybe i don't have my password right? the feature for forgot password wasn't working for me. any suggestions? thanks!

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy seeing the people who really think they are good and are terrible. I just don't like the people who put on a show (i.e. the Jamaican faker. Statue of Liberty boy) just to get themselves on TV. I like the delusional ones (i.e. Bobby May and her sister)!

I have to agree. I hate these people who obviously aren't serious about auditioning but what are ya gonna do? I LOVE THE FREAKS!!!!!! It really is my favorite part of the show. Nothing gives me a good laugh like these "talents" do.

What happened to Mecca Madison? She's not in the top 24 but I don't remember her getting dismissed! I thought she was super cute and I wanted to see more of her.

She wasn't in the top 48 either. I actually didn't see her anywhere in the hollywood rounds.
