Fans face 11 years in jail for posting early music

Two fans of Ryan Adams face up to 11 years in jail under a new law that makes it a federal crime to distribute movies or music before it's scheduled release. The Family Entertainment and Copyright Act was enacted in 2005, making pirated movies and music extra criminal if it is distributed before the release date.
The two fans, Robert Thomas and Jared Bowser are the first to be indicted under the new law. If convicted on all counts, the defendants each face a potential of 11 years in prison. The case was investigated by FBI agents and is being prosecuted by the Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property Section of the United States Attorney''s Office. 
This type of piracy I can understand everyone being upset about. Distributing movies and music before the official release date is wrong. But it's hard to feel sympathetic for the record labels and the RIAA when they seem to be suing everyone.
