Three of the original Beach Boys reunited for a public appearance in Los Angeles to receive a double platinum record for their 2003 release, "Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach Boys." Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine were on hand as was Bruce Johnston who joined the touring lineup in 1965.
The three original band members have not performed together in years. But, asked about the possibility of sharing the stage again, Wilson replied, "There's a chance of that." Added his cousin, Love, with whom Wilson was often at odds in later years, "We've got tough management."
The focus of the event was to promote reissues of the band's catalog and celebrate the success of "Sounds of Summer," a 30-track set featuring hits like "California Girls," "I Get Around" and "Surfin' U.S.A."
Capitol Records is also planning a few more 40th anniversary releases this year. The single "Good Vibrations" will have a celebratory version released, as will the legendary album "Pet Sounds" in the form of a CD/DVD package.
