Rock Star: Supernova kick starts the season curlio
 2006-07-05 22:20:25
Television The second season of Rock Star opened with a recap of how awesome Rock Star: INXS was. Poor and penniless JD Fortune went on to fame and fortune with INXS after winning last year. JD talked in a small clip of how happy he is and how this has fulfilled all of his expectations. Then Brooke Burke introduced a clip of Supernova, as this season is Rock Star: Supernova. Jason Newsted said that he and Gilby Clarke have been friends for years. Gilby said they wanted to do something new. Tommy Lee says they're looking for a rockstar, and that whoever wins will be thrust into the fastlane. Dave Navarro is also back, and he tells Brooke he missed her.

The band is also introduced.Tommy says that it's huge, someone is going to front their band. Gilby adds that they will record a single which will be released at the end of September. Jason says there will be a new album and a huge New Year's Eve show. Butch Walker, the producer who will be producing the project is also there to lend a hand with the opinions. From there we head for the performances.

First up was Storm Large, who insists that is her real name. She performed Pinball Wizard by The Who. She's pretty and has very lovely eyes. I like her deep soulful voice, but I fear ths might have a limited range of what sounds good with her voice. Only time will tell for sure. Dave congratulated her on kicking off the season. Tommy asked her why she picked that song, she said she's unafraid. Gilby asked about being first and she said she likes it, as she gets a clean mic that way.

Ryan Star said that it's not really about image, but just being honest. He mentioned tattoos specifically, leading me to wonder if he's ever seen Tommy Lee? His performance of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls started out with just him and his guitar. Maybe it's Sprout's fault, but I find myself not liking him that much. Despite his talk of being honest, I didn't feel that from his performance. It didn't have the vulnerability that the song calls for. Dave said it was a great performance with lots of passion. Jason liked Ryan's versatility with the guitar, but didn't like the way he looked down at the chords all the time.

Toby Rand is just a surfer dude from Australia, hoping to meet some single girls on the show. He performed Knockin on Heaven's Door acoustically. It was a nice performance, he seems to have his own style. Tommy seemed confused, saying something about not knowing where he was going, Toby said he hopes he's going with him. Gilby liked the change, said it was awesome. Butch said that Toby's voice sounds good coming through a mic.

Patrice Pike grew up wanting to be a musician, luckily for her her family encouraged it. She sang Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane. She was interacting with the band, which we know from last season is a good thing. She's a wonderful performer and the song was perfect for her. Dave loved seeing her interact with the band. Gilby loved the tone of her voice.

Magni, from Iceland, gave up his band in Iceland for the show. He performed Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. He's got a nice voice, but I don't think the song was the best to show off his voice. Tommy wanted him to speak Icelandic, wanting to know how to say Hello. Dave thought the stage vibe was a bit like Vega, and Gilby agreed with him.

Zayra Alvarez comes from a town that is too small for her. She said she always knew she wanted to be a singer. She sang Bring Me To Life by Evanescence. She's a great performer, but honestly I didn't think she carried off those notes very well. Actually I think that the performance of the song at Cedar Point during Halloweekends by the staff there was better than her performance. Butch liked her, saying she has this Mazzy Star meets Bjork thing. Tommy called her very spicy. Jason asked her to marry him.

Jenny Galt said she was always close to making it but never quite got there. She performed How You Remind Me by Nickelback. Honestly I thought it was the first really bad performance of the night. I could honestly see why she never quite made it. She's got the looks but not the talent. The band only seemed to see the look though, with Dave calling her hot and sexy. Jason said she looked like she belongs in front of a rock band.

Josh Logan hoped the band didn't want to be one dimensional. He feels the definition of rockstar needs to be reinvented. His performance of She Talks To Angels by the Black Crowes was totally awesome. I just sat on the couch in wonder. He made Dusty's neck hairs stand up though, and that's not a good thing. Dave thought it was like Chris Robinson went to finishing school Gilby asked why Josh picked that song, Josh said that he can feel that song. Tommy thought it was an excellent choice for someone who has so much soul. Jason wondered if he could front the band when soul is his thing. Josh replied that he can bring it to the band.

Matt Hoffer worked in the corporate world, but decided to risk everything and quit. He performed Yellow by Coldplay. He was hitting all the notes nicely but it was a bit of a muted performance, like he's not all that comfortable. Dave said that he loved the song and Matt delivered but had some pitch problems. He would like to see Matt do something heavy next time.

Dilana, forever to be known as SCARY CHICK, grew up poor in Africa. She performed Lithium by Nirvana, and just stood there looking very creepy and scary. She would definitely fit well with the band. Out of all the girls, I can see her giving Tommy Lee a run for his money. Her interaction with the band was amazing, she was headbutting people! I love her. Dave said she's awesome and when she was standing still she had an intensity that was riveting. Tommy loved watching her, to the point that he couldn't even talk.

Dana Andrews led a sheltered life as a child, the plane trip out was her first plane ride. I thought that her performance of I'm The Only One was more like karaoke than anything else. She's got power, but she needs to work on her own style. Dave wondered how her mom and dad felt about her climbing on a bus with the guys. Butch said her pitch was great. Jason said that she has an incredible gift and they're watching it develop.

Phil Ritchie doesn't think people should make choices based on financial security. He performed Cult of Personality by Living Colour. His voice annoys me and he looks like Enrique Iglesias. Beyond that, I don't have much. Dave loved it, but the stage presence needs work. Gilby thought he was pitchy. Tommy said he (and everyone) needs to realize how important song choice is.

Jill Gioia is the little girl with the big voice. As I'm not a fan of Piece of my Heart by Janis Joplin, I didn't really like the performance. I'll reserve full judgement until next week (presuming she makes it that far). Dave said she did awesome. Jason called her a stick of dynamite, small package but incredible power.

Chris Pierson played baseball but had arm problems. So he went into rock and roll. He performed Roxanne by the Police with his own "unique" arrangment. His overall look reminds me of Marty (and oh do I miss Marty). His vocal was interesting, I suppose. The band didn't like it though, Jason pointed out that not many have Sting's range. Dave said it showed how limited Chris' range is. They didn't seem to like the arrangement either.

Lukas Rossi said he wasn't here to put on a persona. He performed Billy Idol's Rebel Yell. I didn't really understand much of what he sang, but he was so entertaining that I didn't much care. Once again, I love him. Dave thought it was awesome. Gilby loved that he made the song his own. Tommy said "can you say rockstar?".

At the end of the show, Chris, Phil, and Magni were in the bottom three.

It's hard for me to pick a bottom three, as we don't have much familiarity with the rockers yet. I'm not fond of Chris, Phil, Magni, or Zayra though.

My favorites so far are Dilana (SCARY CHICK), Lukas, and Josh.

Random Thoughts:

1. Maybe it's just the editing, but the entire band comes out sounding like Paula Abdul! Who would have pictured Tommy Lee being polite?

2. Raise your hand if you missed the decent band that comes along with the Rock Star show! American Idol seriously needs to consider hiring house band. Really, really seriously consider getting house band.

3. And while we're bashing AI, how refreshing is it to have 15 contestants, all of them with talent? Even the ones I don't like are still better than most of the crap on AI. Performers who have voices and stage presence and personality.. WOW! Now I know why Chris didn't make it onto Rock Star and had to settle for AI - he doesn't have the talent of even the worst of the 15.

4. No pictures, because the computer decided to be weird. We'll get it worked out for tomorrow though.

At the moment the only two I would be interest in seeing more from would be Dilana and Lukas, if any of the others are sent home, I won't be really upset.

Be proud of me Will, I remembered!!!!Only we've been having storms here so I only got to see bits and pieces of the show. I am a Rockstar Virgin so you guys will have to bear with my lameness! Since I didn't see the whole show, I can't pass judgment, but what I did see I like Josh the best and Zayra the least. Judgement is still out on Lukas. I think I like him but I'm not sure yet. Can't wait to see what everyone else thinks. (Sprout and Curlio thanks for filling in the holes for me!)

"And while we're bashing AI, how refreshing is it to have 15 contestants, all of them with talent? Even the ones I don't like are still better than most of the crap on AI"

Amen to that! I gotta say though, the talent seems a lot thinner than the INXS show, where virtually every 'contestant' was talented enough to be cranking out CDs.

Gotta disagree with ya on Dilana ... I never turn to the TV until halfway through the song, so my initial reaction is based solely on voice, and WOW! She has a voice like I've never heard before .. like Janis Joplin and BBKing singing a duet from the same set of vocal cords.

Overall, the guys are a weak bunch .. Gilby flat out said Chris's performance 'sucked' .. and I agree. Magni and Lukas were ok, but the rest of the guys were forgettable. Jill's performance sounded like a modern 'country' singer trying to do Janis. Some of the others had ill-suited song choices - I mean, we're talking about guys from Mettalica, Guns N Roses and Motley Crue here, not REM!

Front runners: Dilani, Storm.

I agree the guys seem to be a lot weaker than last year, but they all had really bad song choices. I was disappointed at how many sang the same songs as last year! Talk about setting yourself up. I liked Dilana and Josh, too, but I wonder how versatile they are. I liked most of the girls.

I'm telling everybody now Toby Rand will win this competition. Im an aussie and he comes from this band called Juke Kartel which you can find on myspace. He aint JUST there to pick up chicks and I know he will be the last rocker left standing. Zayra has to be the first to go and is the only one there who lowers the quality of the performers. Besides her the other 14 ROCK! I agree with the dude who paid out Lukas...what a doush, an emo or rebel without a cause if you will.

just watched the show i new zealand!!! gotta agree with the dude who wrote the big article about everyone. cant see the south african (man or woman?), the small chick, small town girl or nickleback lady winning. Pretty sure a man will win, my money is on the aussie guy!!!!!!! and the house band doesnt get the credit it deserves. The next serries should be "HOUSE BAND: BETTER THAN INXS" . please dont judge me for my comments hehehehe

Good morning everybody! Here was my impression of the performers:

Storm: I found her completely unremarkable. She can sing, but she emotes like a dead fish. NEXT!

Ryan Star (I knew it was an AI name, thanx for correcting me Will): This guy blew. Taking some info from Sprout's recap, I could see his massive ego standing just behind him, whispering out the cord arrangements. And come on, if you're going to have to do a Goo Goo Dolls song for Tommy Lee, I'd think you'd speed it up rather than strip it down. NEXT!

Toby Rand: I thought his voice was pleasant but he seems a bit too laid back for this band. Just don't think he's scary enough, although his weird australian fans that are already popping up freak me out a bit. NEXT!

Patrice: She looks like somebody's mom to me. A hip, fun mom but a mom nonetheless. Her singing was fine, but again, she doesn't seem to have the edge the band needs. NEXT!

Magni: This may be an UO (unpopular opinion) but I think Magni is the dark horse in the running. Have you ever met anyone from Iceland? They're weird, in a really really good way. I think he's going to be limited by the song choice, but if he gets a chance to sing some more freaky and modern than the Rolling Stones, he could blow everybody away.

Zayra: Possibly another UO, but I think she's pretty cool. So what if she didn't hit all the notes? Is this a singing competition or a rockstar competition? She's totally got the stage presence and other-worldliness that makes truly fantastic rock stars. I could see her going very dark and goth too, which seems like the boys in the band would dig. Keep your eye on her.

Jenny: GAG!!! Double GAG!!! I hope she stays around so that I can work up a McPhee type loathing for her. All I could see when she was performing was Avril Lavigne, except older with bigger thighs. So NOT Tommy Lee, so NOT rockstar, just so NOT! NEXT!

Josh Logan: By far the most appealing voice of the bunch. I wonder, again, about his dirt. Is he dark enough for this band? I see him more in the Dave Matthews/John Mayer school of rock. But he might grow and dirty up.

Matt Hoffer: Total snoozefest. Sprout's recap said (if I remember correctly) that he was a peachy guy, all nice, so I let him have a pass before totally dismissing him. His singing was painful in parts and he exuded about as much sexiness as my ingrown toenail. NEXT!

Dilana aka SCARY CHICK: I 100% agree, Curlio. She stole the show last night. Now, THAT'S what a rockstar does. She's got the intensity that so many others were clearly lacking. Her only drawback for me would be the death metal tone to her voice. She sounds a bit like a garbage disposal. But rock audience seem to like the growl, so maybe. She clearly set herself up as the one to beat.

Dana Andrews: I think she must have gotten on the wrong bus about six months too late at the LA airport, because the American Idol auditions were over long ago. She is so clearly on the wrong show and I bet somewhere, Chris Daughtry is frantically searching for her phone number to go back in time and switch places with her. No sex appeal, no intensity, and her 'aw shucks' hick girl routine makes me nauseous (like a certain AI contestant who won't be named). Sorry to bust out all the AI, but this chick is so AI I can't help it. NEXT!

Phil Ritchie: I guess someone left his personality in Maryland, cuz boy was deader than dead. I wonder if it was nerves or if he really fronts a band flaling himself about the stage like a zombie. Maybe that's why he's in Ocean City, MD--home of fat rednecks on harleys who drink pabst blue ribbon during happy hour. I challenge him to surprise me and redeem the good name of my homeland.

Jill: Yuck. Double yuck! From her fake boobs to her bleached out hair, she makes me cringe. She's too darn bubbly to be a rock star. Come on, could you ever imagine her waking up under an anonymous stripper in a pool of her own vomit? Me neither. Her voice is not remarkable enough to redeem her image problems. NEXT!

Chris Pierson: He sucked. Enough said. My bet to go home.

Lukas Rossi: Now, here's someone I can imagine in a pool of his own vomit. The vocals were decent, but the intensity was totally there. I could see him, strange little dwarf man that he is, meshing really well with Supernova. He definately put himself in the front of the pack.

My top three:
1. Dilana
2. Lukas
3. Zayra

Bottom three:
1. Chris
2. Ryan
3. Jenny

I predict Chris gets the boot for so flagrantly showing both his limited vocal range and inability to arrange a song.

On a side note, and Will the historian can correct me if I'm wrong, but JD and that blonde chick Susie were both in the bottom 3 after the first performance last year and went on to be the winner and 4th place respecetively, so I'm trying not to judge too quickly. The singers can squeak by with a lackluster performance and come back to blow us away with a more appropriate song choice (this is the fate I predict for Magni and Zayra).

Cheers!

As far as song choice goes, everyone needs to remember they get stuck with 15 songs and then pick from those. It's not overly fair to criticize the performers for not picking rock songs when they're left with some crappy songs.

Then again, I remember a certain contestant last year being given Britney Spears Hit Me Baby One More Time. Oh yeah, that was my Marty If Marty can make that song rocky and entertaining, surely this group could have livened up their songs.

I do give Chris points for being the bravest one to step up with a new arrangment. To my knowledge, he's the only one that did so? If there were any other changes to the other songs, they were very minor.

Welcome back everyone! Nikki, MomR, Shellybeanstalker!!!!!.
Curlio, great recap, as usual, what are those things on Dusty, dusterbumps??

Anyway, I'm sure many others including Master Blaster Sproutster will be entertaining us, yeah , yeah, yeah!!!!

Overall, I really liked the show, very good, the house band is great, great, yes probably way better than INXS!! The show is sooooo entertaining, even the not so great ones, and I say that because I'm holding back the luv and severe analysis for now, until I see more. I had a list made up and I was gonna make comments, but after the first few it was a m&m'ss or snickers type decision so I decided on the four also rans, who I am totally open to re-inspire my crush-i-itude at a future time.

My bottom 4 were : (Randomly)

Dana Andrews, not much stage presence!
Magni, foreign rocks are real but not quite there (except my Brits of course)
Chris, far too many wrong decisions, when you fake it fake it better!!!!!
Phil, I don't think he gets the umph of this cool song, it must be sung with a certain attitude!!

The other all pretty good, I want more, I sayyyyyysssss I want more Nooooowwwwww!

I must however admit that Zayra, was pretty doggonned good, I don't see the fit with this band, but I have a feeling the Latino and men who like exotic chicks ( like moi) will dig her, she will not, I repeat, not go home today! After the reality show, which you all should try to seen on Msn, I thought she would go first, but, a little wowie out to this odd lovely lady!

I think we should all give the Rockers a pass on the initial Self-promotion spiels they were most likely asked to come up with and you know how those awkward first moments with a stranger can ofter lead to mis-perceptions.

Hugs and Kisses everyone!! I will wait and respond to the posters, for more!

Good show last night. I generally agree with most of the comments. Overall, I actually thought the new crop of wannabes was a bit better than last year's. The woman this year are definitely much stronger.

Hard to say who my bottom three are, except for Chris, who butchered a great song.

I thought Zayra was pretty interesting and would like to see her stick around for another week or two just for the heck of it.

Josh was good, but that's not my favorite song ever and if that's his strong suit I don't see him fitting in with the band.

Mangi wasn't too bad. Did seem to have some stage presence problems. Might be interesting to see him tackle a different song, which I suspect will happen tonight.

Dana was OK, so maybe she makes my bottom three as well. Didn't really do much wrong but didn't do anything that really caught my attention. And I was her father, I wouldn't let her anywhere near Tommy Lee.

And yes, the house band absolutely rocked last night.

Kinda disappointed with the lineup thus far. I don't think much is going to come out of "Supernova" anyway. The members are just 2nd rate hacks who happened to ride along on the coat-tails of famous bands. Robert Trujillo is a far better bass player that replaced Jason Newstead in Metallica. Tommy is more famous for getting a hummer from Pam then he was as a drummer. Gilby? you gotta be kidding! On the plus side I will keep watching to see the House Band (the boys are polished musicians).
They should scrap Supernova and just do a weekly show with the House Band and guest frontmen/women (Lenny Kravitz, Cheryl Crow, Neil Young, whoever) doing covers . That would be worth watching!

After watching SN for the past 3 weeks, now it’s pretty clear that there are only two contenders; Lukas and Dilana.

Dilana puts on a good theatrical show. Her vocals are interesting, but her range is limited. I think the majority of her attraction is in her thearical performance - not in her ability to sing. This is discouraging. SN need to sell CDs through radio play, and I don't see her pulling it off in this forum.

Lukas on the other hand has surprised me with versatility. This guy is AWESOME. His voice is great (and getting better), and his stage antics are just amazing. He commands attention, belts out some serious range, and looks like he was born to swagger around the stage. As for radio play, well I have already downloaded his MP3's into my iPod. My guess is he will be the winner. Hands-down.

Check out some of his stuff music;
