Rock Star: Supernova highlight the importance of song choice

Tonight's Rock Star: Supernova started out with Tommy Lee telling everyone how important the audience is. Honestly my mind tends to wander when Tommy talks, I'll have to work on training my attention span for him. The overall theme seemed to be song choice though. The guys started to resemble a broken American Idol record. Last night they were all Paula Abdul niceness, now tonight it's Randy Jackson's "song choice." Let's hope they go for some honest Simon Cowell meanness next week.
Anyhow, on with the recap. We got to see a couple of scenes from the mansion that I believe were on the reality episode that Sprout covered. This was followed by a recap of yesterday's performances.
Dave Navarro then talked to Chris Pierson, asking him if he had any regrets for rearranging Roxanne or his performance of it. Chris said that he wanted a challenge, not to come to the show and not take a step forward. He thinks he made a bit of a mistake with the song selection however. Phil Ritchie was asked if he would be taking song selection more seriously now. He said that he would, but everyone was getting to know each other, and they didn't really want to be cutthroat yet.
This was followed by a clip of what happened after the performance at the Rock Star mansion. Chris was still upset about the criticism, after working so hard it's not nice to hear you suck. Lukas Rossi put everyone on the spot by asking Dana Andrews who she thought would be in the bottom three. Matt Hoffer told him to answer the question, but he never really did.
Back to the show, and Dave wants Lukas to answer the question finally. Lukas, after a bit of delay, says that Chris tried to change the song around which was gutsy and he hopes he gets another chance. He singled Dana out because she couldn't handle a party with Supernova, let alone a tour. Last on his list was Jenny, as her tone wasn't right. Dave gave him respect for being honest. Chris says that everyone busted their butts in their auditions. Matt doesn't like it when people won't answer a question they ask.
Tommy then said that they decided that they wanted an encore from Dilana. Her performance tonight was slightly less scary than yesterday, but still awesome. She's definitely one to watch. I can't wait to see her next week.
Then it was time for the bad news. Brook Burke told Magni, Phil, and Chris that they were in the bottom three at the end of the show. However as the rest of the world voted, the bottom three changed. Zayra Alvarez, Ryan Star, and Matt were all in the bottom at some point last night. Those who aren't safe get to perform a song of their choice, then the band will decide who to keep and who to boot from the show.
Chris Pierson was the first to end up in the bottom. Gilby Clarke said that Chris took a lot of criticism, and wonders what he Chris will do to change everyone's opinion. He picked LA Woman by the Doors to perform. Honestly he didn't seem to change the opinion that his range is limited. I do like his hair curly better than straight, but that's about the only positive I've got for him.
Phil was the next to make it into the bottom. He said that he felt like he could handle Cult of Personality last night. He also didn't think he sucked. He chose to perform Stars by Switchfoot, as it's one of his favorite bands. I didn't like it much, but I didn't hate it. It might be the tone of his voice that I don't like. He just leaves me feeling bland.
Then Ryan, Zayra, and Magni were all told they were safe. That left Matt in the bottom. Jason Newsted said that he loved the song, but Dave asked for something heavier. Matt said that it doesn't sound good, but he chose Duran Duran. He made the song heavier though, but it didn't seem that the band was buying it. He performed Planet Earth. Honestly I think he's got a better voice than the other two, but I'm not sure about the song choice. He either made the biggest ballsy move ever, or he shot himself in the foot. The band seemed confused during the whole thing.
After the deliberations, Jason told everyone to get serious about picking songs. Gilby complimented Chris' song choice, but still question his vocal ability. Phil had really good vocals, but they still question his performance. As for Matt, well they (surprise) question his song choice. Tommy gave Phil the good news that he is the first one safe. Then tells Matt that he is the first to go, as he picked a really bad song. Matt thanks all of them, saying they are his heroes, and he had all of them on his walls as a teenager. He told Tommy he's a beautiful guy who is getting a bad rap from the press. Then he said that everyone else is so talented he doesn't mind losing to them.
Honestly, though I did like Matt - he picked a Duran Duran song! Come on, he deserved to leave for that one. I'm sure Sprout will be disappointed, but even he will have to admit that it was a lousy song choice.
Hopefully next week I'll have everyone's name worked out, as I keep mentally calling them "that blonde chick" and "that emo guy."
One would think that I would be upset that Mattie was booted but I am not! Here’s the thing – in the Reality Episode – I never heard Mattie sing! I heard him sing on the performance night and though he has a nice voice – he is too Vanilla to front this band!
I am sorry but I think Coldplay is not a rock band – I mean Chris Martin is too simple and for a lack of better word Vanilla!
Duran Duran?
You are told in a critique that you have to bring in a more rocking performance and if Duran Duran is the best you can conjure – sorry babes, even I would kick you out!
Mattie is a great guy – just not right for this band! Sorry! I will miss him though!
On the other hand...
Yay! Chris survived!
The Core Of Man's Spirit Comes From New Experiences!
Ok, yeah, Duran Duran was the girly band of the 80s, but then again, Def Leppard always claimed they were more Duran Duran than rock .. and Andy Taylor, once he went solo, showed that he is a darned goood rock Guitarist.
Ballsy move, and he did a good job, but this isn't INXS you're auditioning for.
Dilani's performance wasn't as good as yesterday, but still smoked.
The bottom 3 deserved to be there, and will be again.

I'm with you Brother Sprout! I actually liked his "Yellow" song rendition, I thought he nailed it as did the Nova guy with the dark hair and dark facial hair.
But, he is more than anyone on the show so obviously not right for the new band that I have no feelings about him leaving except I would like to see what else he could do.
Dilana, is interesting, but couldn't listen to an album by her if it is all gonna be nails in your eyeball type stuff. I hope she can do a ballad or so, I am just not turned on by the "crack ho" beginning of "lithium"!
Sprout, when are we gonna get your take on the others??
PLease, Please!!
Where is froggie and Luv and Cheebe and Shenova and the rest of our wonders, I sure hope they join in.
And for Curlio, I am with you Queenbee, Tommy Lee was my only reservation about this show and project. He is the less capable of the bunch to me, he is just an mildly interesting odd "almost was there"! I guess you could say he's just " insane man, just insane man!"
Willl
I, for one, was shocked (not Chris Daughtry boot shocked, but shocked nonetheless) that Matt left and not Chris.
The way I saw it, Phil clearly was the most improved from Wed. to Thurs. Not sure if he's right for the band (to borrow Sprout's phrase, he's a bit vanilla) but his performance last night showed a lot more of his vocal ability than Wed. I dug his tone but he seems to be more a melody guy than a growler. I'm thinking that Supernova is looking for someone who can growl.
Chris sucked. Big Time. I would argue that Thurs. performance was EVEN WORSE than Wed. because with Roxanne, at least he could kind of hide his lack of talent behind an extremely difficult song and a weird arrangement. LA Woman isn't that hard to sing (not that he did that well), but it's very hard to get the Jim Morrison sex machine vibe going and Chris just fell flat. Rolling around on the ground? He looked like a soft core porn actress, not a demonic rock cock. I find him repulsive, untalented and bit conceited. One of the best singers in the world? Please! What about all those singers with, oh I don't know, recording contracts, hit records, performing opera on the world's stages. My only consolation is that I think Supernova sees through him and will give him the ax next chance they get.
Poor sweet Matt Hoffer. His performance wasn't that bad. In fact, I'd never heard that Duran Duran song before and after listening to him sing it, I would be intrigued to hear the real thing. However, he clearly missed the lesson that being a rockstar is as much about image as it is about talent and Supernova would never have a self-confessed Duran Duran fan fronting them. I guess you've got to give him credit for being who he is, but I think we all know that show business doesn't reward authenticity as much as it rewards image-making.
I was happy to see my girl Zayra avoid the chopping block. I really feel that she's going to knock one out of the park in the next few weeks.
My prediction for next week is that Chris will be sent home. He's kind of a lame duck as I see it. I guess, like all reality shows, it won't get really exciting until they've trimmed off all the fat and the good singers start getting axed.
One a side note (and my apologies for being long-winded. I should really change my tag to long-winded drama queen), I've started to re-experience many of the same feelings that I had last season when I did not have Curlio.com to share them with. I'd like to vent about something that really bothers me, namely, Dave Navarro. He is, by far, one of the neediest media loose women in the universe. First, he's on this show supposedly to bring rock cred, but he functions like a co-host and I dare anybody to tell me how he and Brook Burke are any different than Regis and Kelly. He is so NOT rock 'n roll, sitting in his throne with his latte and cheerleading all the contestants on. Secondly, I hate eye make-up on men and Mr. Navarro is up to using a full stick of eyeliner per episode. Lastly, returning to his media ho-ness, anybody else notice how he'll climb into the shot with Supernova while the contestants are performing. It's like he can't bear to be off screen for even a second. I'd like to see him (and his skanky wife who's a media loose woman too) publicly flogged.

That is all. Thank you.
Jeeper Creepers, Nikki, when you are pretty much right on, and not belittling one of my "baby dolls", I feel so much like your "brother", except for the fact you are a tallented writer, (who has tiny little bouts of i-n-s-a-n-i-t-Y), and you are soooooo funny, and even better at being a southern be-atch than I am at my best! (see what an awful sentence that was)
We love you for you long windedness, don't change!
Aside, Carmen says Dave spends hours everyday doing a beauty regimine with facial mask and putting on more make up than she usually wears, he is so prissy.
But, I still think he is an interesting guy! I guess because he is so unlike me and I feel no threat on any level.
I think Dave and Brooke are probably following the directions given them relating to most of the action we see. They have probably decided he should take on the cheerleader role unless, something is completely off. Just my guess. I'm sure they studied last seasons tapes and tried to accentuate the plusses!
Hey, thanks for the complements, Will. I think . . . one can never be 100% sure when you're hiding some bite beneath all that Southern Charm.
Question for you . . . so who's the crush? We all know you've got have one. I can see you going for Storm or Jenny. Please, not Dana! Are you reserving judgement? Is one performance not enough to inspire your love and devotion?
I would have liked to have seen all three go just because it's obvious -- at this point at least, unless they improve -- that none of last night's final three is going to join the band.
I agree Phil seemed kind of bland. Chris was improved, but still unimpressive and Matt was just dumb for picking Duran Duran, without really turning up the rock quotient in the song. Don't get me wrong, I like the song and I like Duran Duran. But if you don't come back with a harder sounding song after the band asks you to, you deserve to go.
As for Dilana was good, but I thought she was better on Wednesday. Last night she just seemed to mimic the exact same performance -- doing the motionless thing for a while, then jumping up and down like a bobble head on crack and then screaming while removing her hood. I hope she's not a one-trick pony because I think she has a good rock voice.
Personally, I believe Supernova showed a real lack of credibility by not sending all three home last night. Clearly none of them have what it takes to front a band, neither the chops or stage presence--and certainly not the charisma, the X-factor--to be a star.
A question for you Dilana fans: would you really pay money to listen to her growl and scream on a Supernova recording? The scary chick belongs in dark, undergound club with a hard metal group yelling songs about death, castration and other happy things.

Great post Allan, you are so right, I said also last night, they ought to send these three home and heighten the tension, but, then I would get fewer shows, and I love the young rockers and their efforts. And, as far as credibility, I don't hold this against them, cause they are under contract to do as the producers say and would be in breach of contract if they deviaited from the script. I am a photographer so I gotta love the looks of this krazy Dilana but, as you said and I before, what you gonna do next and what about an all acoustic night.
Allan you and some of the other new posters, should join up! You can then quote the others better and use the funny liittle markers !!!!
Curlio and Dusty, the owner of the site are non-intrusive and great host, you will like the whole gang when they get here?????? Will
Ok, being new to this show, I'm a little intimadated, but Duran Duran??????? Come on now! Before he opened his mouth I knew he was gone. I can't wait until next week so that hopefully I can see the whole show and get the folks straight as to who's who. I don't think my brain can keep more than 10 straight! Tend to agree with you guys that the other two guys will be gone in the next few weeks, I don't think they are what Supernova is looking for.
If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!

Beanstalker girl, it wouldn't be as good without you, so onward and so forth!!!!
It takes a bit to learn who's who, you'll pick it up. The reality deal on MSNBC is good if you have high speed and even if not the bios and blogs are good. They way surpass
Idols investment in the online media department. This thing will reall heat up soon.
And was it just me, or did Brooke seem even more robotic than usual last night. Didn't they make her attend remedial hosting classes before the season started?

I have seen Dilana play in and around the Houston area several times. In addition to this, I am actually a friend. She and I did a benefit together for the Gulf Coast Hurricane victims.
Her first performance was a wake-up call. Basically, to say "HEY ... I'M HERE, and I CAN ROCK". Yes, she did put on her Cobain stare for Lithium ... and it worked for her ... it works very well with that song too.
That being said ... she does have depth as well. She can sing anything that is thrown at her. I can say, with much confidence, that she has what it takes to successfully front Supernova.
One thing to remember ... from someone who knows her ... she is a performer/entertainer. She is not "goth", or "satanic", or anything like that. She is merely ROCK. In the next few weeks, everyone will see that she isn't the "Scary Chick" that she's been dubbed. (although, kudos to her ... she sure does have a lot of people talking about her, doesn't she?)

Pork rinds and budweiser to you,
Nicole
You know right now it's like a buffet, to much to worship, and there are no also rans in the beauty contest, sooo. I gotta see more, you see Nikki, I'm a people person, well to clarify I do like sassy women, and well these are bout as sassy as you get, huh??? I really don't want another self-destructive Janis Joplin, type, life is too short. But, spicey......yes sir-eeeeeee! Also, no railroad spikes through the face!! That is just silly and sad! She could however get the cover of "Bike and Be-atch Magazine"!
Will
Preacher Man, well you have peeked my interest, and she is super hot and a showboat, so I say bring it on Bike babe, make me a believer, I am completely able to remove the metal facial ornaments when fantasizing!
Allan, yes. I love her voice. I'm the antithesis of the American Idol theme that looks are more important than voice.
It's MUSIC! I don't give ******* what the person looks like when I'm listening on my stereo.
Preacher, I hope you'll pass on my comment on Dilani's voice: "She has a voice like I've never heard before .. like Janis Joplin and BBKing singing a duet from the same set of vocal cords. "
lukas is my top choice because he is great.
dilana is also great.
I have to say matt deserves to go home because of his song choice.
chris even though not impressive lets give another chance.
as for phil he also deserves another shot because of his potentials.
Dilana – Scary Chick – I LOVE HER! Wife Beater – Coolness! When I saw her for the first time performing – her red highlights fell on her forehead at the end – giving the impression that she is bleeding! It was so cool! I want her to win! I am guessing this is not the end of her abilities and it is great to know what Preacher had to preach about her! Come on – that was too good to resist!
Preacher – You are right – people are talking about her and any publicity is a great publicity!
Ok, here’s something we never saw – Supernova – Tommy Lee asked the studio audience who should get the encore – many screamed for Storm, majority screamed for Lukas and Dilana – Tommy was confused – audience screamed for Both – however, Dave decided that Dilana gets the encore! Cool chips!
Lukas – Oy! I knew this one would bring in the hate factor – here’s the thing – he shares same credentials as last year’s winner – living in a car – here to win – talent overshadowed by antics! Here’s a thing though – there already is a J.D. Fortune and sadly, if you try to be J.D. you are nothing more than a poser!
It was unnecessary to rub people the wrong way – my major irritation about J.D. was that he was stirring the manure without any productive reasons!
Ok, I will admit that this Bad Boy bit in Rock is considered a great credential, but seriously – isn’t it old already?
Dutilbug – you are absolutely correct Lukas is this year’s J.D. Fortune, only J.D.’s fans are not impressed!
The Core Of Man's Spirit Comes From New Experiences!
I've been reading posts on a whole bunch of sites and it makes me laugh when people are offended by someone who isn't sweet and syrupy to all the other contestants. Personally, I watch the show and try to figure out who might have the guts to stand up to the band and contribute his/her own flavour.
I laugh when the contestants suck up to Tommy Lee etc after their performances. I would hope they don't want someone who's hero-worshipping them to be their lead singer. Admittedly, JD did a lot of sucking up to the band last year, but he wasn't too snivelling about it as far as I remember and he certainly wasn't a favorite of the others in the competition... I always think of the movie RockStar and how they just basically hired a lead singer and that's all he ever was. I try to think of who wouldn't accept that when I watch the shows.
For me, Lukas stood out in the performances because he seemed like he had been performing with the house band for years! I also really liked the Aussie guy and Storm. The others didn't give off the right vibe for what I think this band will sound like.
However, I agree that it is too early to tell. It would be easier if they were given songs which had a similar feel. But then, they'd really only need one show! I can't wait to see if other contestants surprise and wow me. Who knows? Lukas could really have a stinker of a performance next time!
Personally, I believe Supernova showed a real lack of credibility by not sending all three home last night..................... the X-factor--to be a star.

The three in the bottom all seemed a little EMO, and not right for a rock band. I agree with the guest on Dilana, that is unless we see another side to her soon. I'm still having some trouble keeping the names, faces, song choices straight. It would be nice to have one performance night just to get to know them...then start the performance/elimination night?
quick question, how far ahead of time are the episodes taped? A few hours, a day? I ask because I came across this amusing Dave Navarro quote in a Candian newspaper web site. The story was posted last Wednesday, the day of the premiere and a day before the elimination show. Maybe it was just good coincidental foreshadowing:
"If someone picks a Duran Duran song, I am simply going to say, 'You want to join Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and Gilby Clarke and that's the song you choose?'"

Not sure, but not live. The kickoff show was taped the friday before and the results probably the afternoon of the evening, for editing purposes. Will
Last year the shows were taped I believe on Sunday afternoon, at least for some of the episodes.
If there is any way you can, go to the RS Super site and watch the reality show, you must have high speed for this but it promises a very interesting show tonite. Put it like this there are some huge obstacles to overcome for some with the song choice! It will be so so interesting to see how they fall or rise! Will
