Rock Star: Supernova shows off their limited song list curlio
 2006-07-12 22:11:51
Television Normally I wouldn't harp on song choices, as I feel it's the way you sing the song that matters more. However Rock Star: Supernova is starting to have some crappy song choices, though it's not really the fault of any of the 14 rockers. The song list available to the contestants has to be disgustingly short, as all three of the bottom three sang repeats of songs already played this season! If this was week 10 that wouldn't be so bad, but we're only on week 2. We'll have more on that topic at the end of the article. Anyhow, on with the soap opera that is Rock Star: Supernova - more entertaining than Days of Our Lives!

After a recap of yesterday, we joined the rockers back at the mansion. Lukas Rossi talked about Jason Newsted's comments about his voice. Lukas says he knows his own instrument, it's his voice not Jason's, been singing for 15 years and never had any problems with endurance or delivery (all of which I took as *waah* they were mean to me crybaby stuff. We may have to vote on whether to call him skunky or cry baby). Meanwhile, Jill Gioia was still pissed off at Dave Navarro as she thought it was harsh. She wanted to say more to him but it was too late. Toby Rand was taking everything in stride (as well he could as they've not really been harsh to him yet?) saying he's going to listen to whatever they say and act on it. He doesn't want to be pigheaded (he's a guy though, won't be able to help himself eventually). Later Chris Pierson talked to Dilana as he was still upset about Dave's comments that he was like a contest winner. He wants Dave to back up his comments.

So back to the stage for the standard interviews. First up was Dave and Chris, talking about what Dave said to Chris last night. Dave wanted to know what Chris wanted to hear from him. Chris said that he had a chance to sit down and soak up the comments. He's here to get better and will bust his *every single week.
Next up was Giby Clarke and Zayra Alvarez. Gilby wanted to know if Zayra thought it was important to be familiar with their music. Zayra said she never said she wasn't familiar, she was asked if she ever owned the records and that's 2 different things. She says they're legends and they dream to live what they had lived and other various suck-uppy comments. Gilby says they want to find who will fit with their band and who is familiar with what they like. Zayra says she had the singles, the 45s as she couldn't afford full albums. Dave Navarro told her that she may need to explain what 45s, it's a record they don't make those anymore. Tommy says it makes 45 rotations per second, and Dave gives points to Tommy Lee for being right. Well I beg to differ, but if a record had gone 45 rotations a second, that would be "cut your arm off" speed. It was 45 rotations per minute. Oh, and yes they do still make records.
Then it was time for Dave and Jill Gioia to have it out. Dave told her her hair looked stunning, then gave her time to get any other comments off her chest. She said she expected to get comments on choosing that song, but she wanted to do something outside her box. She's human and things effect her for a moment, she will use it as fuel for her fire next time.
Last up were Jason Newsted and Lukas, with Jason doing his typical preachy 'not personal attacks' and 'take care of your instrument' crap. He added that 15 years is nothing, as 15 years ago he was touring with the best gravel voiced metal singer ever. Lukas backed off and said that he was just commenting on it and wasn't defensive, and respected their opinions.

So the encore didn't go to Dilana (ah well, we could have hoped for 2 weeks in a row). Instead we were stuck with Toby Rand the Aussie boy toy. His "Somebody Told Me" sounded better tonight than last night. He seemed like it was more him rather than him imitating someone.

Then we were finally down to the meat of the night. Jill, Chris, and Zayra were in the bottom three last night, but then Jenny joined them at some point during the voting. First up in the bottom three was Jill.Tommy said they saw her scream a lot last night and wondered what she would sing. She chose Bring Me To Life by Evanescence. If that sounds familiar, Zayra did it last week. Honestly I thought it was terrible, her voice just sucked. House Band rocked it out though. I even liked Zayra better last week, even if I didn't like her performance at the time!

Next into the bottom was Zayra. Gilby asked her if she was surprised to be in the bottom, she answered heck yeah. He told her that she would get to do a tune to change everyone's opinion, but Zayra chose to do "You Really Got Me" - yes the same song she did last night. I actually liked it a lot tonight. She seemed more comfortable and rock, less performance art. Oh no, could I start to like her now?

Jenny Galt, aka Groupie Barbie, was safe, putting Chris into the bottom for a second week. Jason appreciated how Chris was handling things, saying it was very mature. Chris said he would be the real him, and strip down Tonic's "If You Could Only See" performing it acoustic style with the band. It was way better than anything he has done so far, finally it felt like the real Chris stepped up. In case you're wondering, Phil Ritchie sang it last night. I liked Chris' version better.

Down to decision time and Gilby told Jill that she had a great voice and shocked them when she came out with a different look. Zayra always gives a great performance, as it's great to watch her, but it upsets them that she didn't do her homework. They were pleased with all the efford that Chris had made, but he had been in the bottom two weeks in a row. Tommy Lee, aka hatchet man, gave Jill the good news first. Chris is the second to go, making Zayra safe. Dave told Chris that his willingness to take constructive criticism is something to be commended. He also said that Chris' performance tonight was his best yet. The rest was just a bunch of yadda yadda yadda junk, but I did notice that when everyone was giving Chris his standing ovation all the rockers stood up rather quickly except for Lukas. Lukas is looking like this year's *more and more. I hope it's just a bad edit he's getting.

Random thoughts:
darn they speed through this. I need ice packs for my fingers! I actually gave up and ate dinner during the mansion / interview part of the night, relying on our computer recording properly enough to give me a "pause" button to recap that section!

Are Tommy, Gilby, and Jason so washed up that they can't convince any decent bands to turn over music? Or is it perhaps that CBS is just too cheap to pay for the music? Whatever it is, they may quickly learn that the lack of song availability will kill the show. All three songs tonight were repeats, and if this trend continues the season is doomed. Not only will the songs be compared to last year's contestants, but now we're comparing them to each other's performances from just one week ago. Listen up Rock Star - shell out the dough for better songs. If Live can be convinced to play on American Idol, surely someone will let Tommy, Gilby, and Jason steal their music!

I think this highlights one major problem with this year's version of the show. I liked it a lot more when INXS selected the songs for the elimination show. But they were choosing their own songs, so obivously no problem getting permission.

I think all of the bottom three were much better than Tuesday night. But I was a little surprised that Zayra got to stay. Maybe they see some potential for her, while they just felt Chris' voice wouldn't be a good fit even though he obviously did his best work in the elimination show.

I think the songs are repetitive because they have so many rockers they have added coldplay this year and to be honest I figured they would get crappier songs with TLee involved .Chris sucks so did Matt, but Phil is even worse.Doesn't matter who goes home really when you have a competition with 3 or 4 singers with a shot in it.You may have 6 or 7 decent vocalists but there are what 4 rockers?Magni,Lukas,Dilana,Toby and maybe Storm. There are way too many people in this that are just along for the ride.

Totally agree..I think they just keep her around to look at...because she doesn't have it!

I agree with you Curlio....let's get some new songs! Also, I think skunk boy is the new JD!
Just a thought...has anyone noticed when Tommy Lee talks he sounds like Chris Farley doing his talk show host skit?

"Skunk Boy" could very well be the next JD although I am not sure he can actually sing with that mouth full of marbles. Then again no one ever accused Vince Neil of being able to sing either.Skunk Boy does have himself some nice stage presence though.

Zayra absolutely sucks, this chick has no clue. Her english is so bad that she just sounds plain stupid whenever she talks, and for the second straight night she is allowed to butcher "You Really Got Me" and not get dissmissed ?? If i hear that Brooke broad call these contestants "some of the world's greatest rockers" again i will vomit.Old Gilby has zero cred as his claim to fame is playing second fiddle to Slash in GnR.Go figure.Pretty obvious that the american idol audience voters have hijacked the phone lines ? That would explain no talent Jenny,Zayra,Dana etc still being there. This gig is probably Eddie Munsters (Lukkas) to lose.

Curlio, fun post as usual. I think we are all 100% behind you on the song choice deal, these boys need to get on the phones, and maybe Mark Burnett himself should get involved.

I actually did predict all of last nights outcome, pure luck but I have to dis-agree about Jill, her hole hole, that she had dug for herself had me ready to write her off. I though her song last night was the best vocal performance of the season so far. I am not the only one, did you see the look on Zayra's face? I think my Curlio has blond-a-phobia, yes it's a disease that strike hard working website owner-nurseie babes who, had a bad high school/college experience with a horrible overrated blonde of the species!! I love you anyway!!!!!!!!

Is there anyone else that thought Jill did hit a homerun?

Will

I also thouht the encore was way off, not nearly as good! -oops-

NOPE!

I've got agree with Curlio, Jill's performance had one redeeming quality and that was the band. She had absolutely no connection to the song--it's about being spiritually bankrupt and she's prancing around the stage smiling and sticking her chest out. She's one of those performers who just doesn't get it: it's not about 'look at me and my wonderful singing' it's about interpreting a song's feel and lyrics. She's one dimensional. She won't be around for long.

Zayra is my favorite. I think everyone knows this. Here's why:
1. She totally has the attitude to pull off leading a band with people more famous than her.
2. She's in no way shape or form going to make Supernova a hairband nostalgia act (see VH1's supergroup)
3. She doesn't seem to give a manure about pleasing anybody but herself.
4. Everybody else loves Dilana and I like to be different.
Guess I have to get up off my lazy butt and vote for her next week.

Chris sucked again. He doesn't have the skill or the personality or the hair to be big time. Good riddance to bad vocal range, hairstyling and humility.

Funny you should say that the show went too fast last night, Curlio. I was singing the fill the time song---"stretch it out, fill the time, stretch it out, fill the time"
nudge

I still see Lukas and Dilana as the front runners. I predict Jill will return to the bottom three next week to be joined by Jenny and Josh.

Have a lovely day everybody!

I find myself wishing that Supernova would get their butts off the couch and play something. This would give them some sense of identity that might resonate with the rockers. They clearly don't know what Supernova is looking for.

Tommy Lee is coming across as fairly Neanderthal. I don't think he is doing himself any favors by opening his mouth.

Ok, first of – did anyone else notice that after Chris performed, Supernova resorted to Rock, Paper, Scissors? It was darn funny! I am told that compared to last week, this week Supernova were in a dilemma as to who should leave as all three performed well! Though this can be arguable, the studio audience really loved all three performances! Frankly, they should have asked Zayra and Chris to leave – like INXS did last year with Heather and Daphna!

Oy! Will! Dial down a notch – Jill gave the best vocal performance of this season? Ok, I will admit she managed to save her behind beautifully, but best is yet to come! If looks could kill – I think Jill would have been dead – God! Zayra was not pleased! I will say this – Jill was million times better than Zayra!

Zayra – Ai, Ai, Ai! Ok, it was not as painful as on performance night, but she really can’t sing! Yes, she has a great presence and she looked good and though I agree with Nicole’s assessment, Nicole Honey, you missed the most important fact – Zayra cannot SING!

Chris – I would have been upset, if he would have left last week, but when I saw how disillusioned this dude was, I was upset that Mattie left instead! It is one thing to have confidence – another thing to have overconfidence with pompous attitude based in hallucination! Bye Stavros – You won’t be missed!

momROCKS – Finally, I agree with you that skunk boy AKA Eddie Munster is a huge hypocrite! I would have respected him, if he had the guts to take a stand! He is such a freaking tool! I hate butt kissers! Lukas – paint your nose with brown eye-shadow! Curlio is right – he came across as a weepy baby! He could have told Jason on the spot that as a singer – he knows his weaknesses and his strong points!

Jill – At least the babe stood her ground on performance night! Her argument with Dave was edited heavily, so I wonder what more she could have said! I think at least she admitted that things get to her!

Zayra – DID NOT back track much – she told them what she felt and that in my eyes renders her as someone with balls!

Toby – Oh My Word! This guy is a bigger ass-kisser! He is shrewd chap! He plays the camera beautifully, but I hate such characters, I hate preachy mode! I predict that in near future, Lukas and he might have a tiff – Yippee! Soap Dish!

Toby getting an encore was my prediction, but frankly I pressed the mutt button!

I think Dilana really is too sensitive and that makes her more appealing! I know many don’t get her – that’s why I love her! Curlio, I love you baby, but remember, this gal is mine! :P

So the score is –

On my favourite list, I include,

Magni, Phil, Josh, Patrice and of course, Dilana!

On my I don’t mind list, I include,

Storm, Jill, Jenny, Zayra and Dana! (Wow, all gals – how did that happen?)

On my dislike list, I include,

Toby, Lukas and Ryan!

There – we are done for this week!

Oh and one more thing – I miss Dusty’s takes!

1. Yes I had many bad high school experiences with overrated blondes who used their cute hair and bouncy boobs to land on the dean's list when they couldn't even spell their own names.

2. No, that does not mean I hate all blondes (happen to be one myself). I just hate the ones that continue to use their cute hair and bouncy boobs to advance them further in life (see Groupie Barbie). I don't count Jill in that group yet, she seems to have slightly more substance than Jenny and Dana. I put Jill in the Suzy category.

3. Rewatched it as requested, and while Jill hit a few nice notes, overall she was staggering, out-of-breath, and just plain pitchy. And while I agree to a certain extent with Dave's "it's rock and roll who cares about pitchy" philosophy of life, the out-of-breath + pitchy is pretty darn hard to ignore. The girl has no stamina or endurance, which makes her sound even worse than what she probably is. One song and she's already sounding like she's at the end of a concert? That's not good.

4. Maybe you need to stop hearing her with the little man there Will

I agree wholeheartedly. The result show needs to change drastically. Last year, the bottom 3 had to show they fit with INXS which was pretty easy to figure out when they are playing INXS songs. This year, who knows what Supernova is looking for? They need to start assigning songs, sit down and write some new material or something.

Tommy is one of those guys that you just sit there and absorb the glow. He drank away too many brain cells, or had them eaten by being married to Pamela Anderson. The one that annoys me is Jason. He's so preachy... no wonder the guys in Metallica never ended up getting along with him :P

I get the impression that Tommy is working really hard not to drop some major swear words. I can see it in his face. He looks like a little boy who's trying really hard not to do something that will upset his parents, despite all natural urges to do otherwise.

If they ever did a live feed, the FCC would fine CBS a few billion dollars.

And I agree with AJ that Supernova needs to do some rocking. I have no idea what their sound is supposed to be. Is it a heavy metal thing? Hard rock? A hybrid? They've shown clips of the band jamming in the studio, but without any sound. I'd love to hear those sessions.

Have they played any of their music for the online episodes?

I am not on Dilana's bandwagon, I hated the Lithium rendition, but she redeemed herself on the Ring of Fire song, she's just too insecure..if she doesn't stop that soon it's going to be irritating. Okay, I just have to speak up (imagine me, being quiet) and defend Zayra. Some objections I've seen raised about her:

1. She can't sing.
I won't argue she's the best singer, but I think her performance last night shows that she can sing. I think her first two performances were nerves/uncertainty/aliens invading her body. Read curlio's recap--if the big Curl says that it's good, then so it is.

2. She mangles the English language/she's inarticulate.
Girl is from Puerto Rico! Clearly English is not her first language, so if she gets a little tongue-tied, give her a break.

3. She's all bark and no bite/All bravado and no talent/ all balls and no pipes.
How many times do I have to remind you people . . . being a Rockstar is about fifty percent talent and about 200% image. Have you ever heard a recording of Jim Morrison live? Particularly when he'd been into the drugs heavy duty? He sounds like a babbling fool and doesn't give one manure about hitting the notes, but the crowd still loves him. Rock and roll is all about the attitude and I believe that the eye hex Zayra was putting on Jill last night shows who's got the attitude.

Anybody else got anything bad to say about her? Bring it on!!!!!!!!!!

Sincerely,
Nicole who worships at the altar of Zayra

PS--she won't be putting no hex on me, but to the rest of you I say WATCH OUT!

The whole thing is rigged. The Duran Duran choice was a forced choice, the only one approved. Now you see why Zayre chose to sing the same song again, here elimination song was probably doomsday. The show is so cheap that they can only get old crappy songs. These artisits are not allowed to sing their original songs at all-many of these people are very talented in that regard. If you really want to seperate yourself from American Idol, let the rockers rock.
