American Idol's Fantasia reduced to made-for-tv movie

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Fantasia Barrino, the oh-so-promising winner of American Idol 3, has been reduced to playing herself in a made-for-tv movie. The movie is about how terrible Fantasia's life has been. "Life Is Not a Fairy Tale," to air Aug. 19 on Lifetime, is inspired by the R&B singer's autobiography about dropping out of high school and becoming an unwed mother at 17.
"I didn't think it was going to be tough going back playing myself, but it was because I had to relive those moments," Barrino told the Television Critics Association's summer meeting Friday. 
The movie was directed by Debbie Allen.
While Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have rocketed themselves to fame after their wins on Seasons 1 and 4 of American Idol, Fantasia and Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard have faded into reality tv obscurity.

You're an ass. Fantasia is working with the Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin on her new album, Kanye west, Missy Elliott, Ne-yo, Diane Warren and a host of others. She has a track on Soul legend Sam Moore's new album that also features Mariah Carey and Bruce Spingsteen among others. This movie is in conjunction with her NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING BOOK she released last year. She also recikeved 4 Grammy nods for her double platinum debut album..can you do any better?
It's funny you mention Kelly because remember that clonker FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY? And Carrie..she's as dull as the day is long..who would want her in a movie? You're jealous..and we will see who has the last laugh when Fantasia is still making albums 10 years from now, and Kelly and Carrie's teen fanbases are all grown up.

I agree with all the responses here. This person is obviously a racist hater. Fantasia has EVERY news outlet and I do mean EVERY, reporting this information.
IF this person thinks that having your best selling booking purchased for movie rights is being reduced then is insane. Luckily, I don't see many racist postings like this one, most the the news ariticles about her movie have been extremely positive.
You know the person is a racist when they use any excuse to put don't the black contestants and raise the white one's up. Brag when kelly and carrie not only put out a best selling book but have it purchased as a movie, then and only then can you brag.

I agree with the person who wrote this article. I couldn't stand Fantasia on American idol and I don't see that changing just because she had a tough life. I don't understand what any of her past has to do with her ability to song. She can't sing, at least not to my taste. The only thing she does is bounce like a chicken on stange and scream words. I don't care for her style. Obviously others do, she supposedly went double platinum but I don't know of ANYONE (besides those who wrote on here before me) who likes her. Everyone I have talked to about her (during and after the show) can't stand her. To each there own I guess, but leave race out of it. I think it should be about the singing and she can't!!!
As for Kelly, the girls got it going on and not just with the teens. I am not a teen, no where near it and I love Kelly. I listen to her all of the time, love EVERY song on her Breakaway cd which s more than I can say for most artisits. For me I usually only like a song or two on a CD, With Kelly I honestly mean I like EVERY song. She proved and still proves her voice and talent are REAL. No need for manufacturing a voice on CD with computers, she can't do it just as well live as she can on CD.

But whatever your warped reasoning, your biases are clearly showing through and to denigrate Fantasia, as well as Ruben - the only black winners of a reality show and put in a positive light the white winners shows how little, if any, class you possess in the tip of your little pink pinky!
I guess there's no comparison from the Oscar-worthy "From Justin to Kelly" against all others, is it?

As for using Fantasia's Grammy nominations to boost up her "wonderful career" I have but one response - Milli Vanilli. Yes, even crap like Milli Vanilli were nominated, and even WON a Grammy.
I stand by my opinion - Fantasia is an embarrassing mark on American Idol's reputation, as is Ruben. That's not racism folks, that's simply a fact. Clay Aiken should have won season 2, and Latoya London should have beaten out that hoarse screaming trailer ho who used her own daughter as a prop to gain her votes.

Fantasia is the most respected - yes I said - most respected contestant to come out of the Idol money machine. You don't have to listen to me but maybe you would listen to Aretha Franklin, Loretta Devine, Viola Davis, Debbie Allen, Smokey Robinson, Jamie Foxx, Quincy Jones, Denzel Washington, Kanye West, oh and here are some white folks for you just in case you don't recognize those names: Cheryl Crow, Neil Sedaka, Barry Manilow, Billy Joe, Diane Warren, Henry Winkler, Joss Stone, the list is endless.
On top of that Fantasia garnered 4 grammy award nominations for her first CD - an Idol first. She is respected by the people that matter - the music industry, oscar winning actors/actresses and her fans.
Thank god for the haters - You continue to lift Fantasia up.

I have just one thing to say to you BURN baby, because it is fantasia who has story after story about HER when you google her.

When that's not the case, Fantasia wrote a best selling book about her life (not kelly's not clay's not carrie's and not ruben's) and was asked to star in it.
It is getting great reviews also has a Golden Globe and Emmy Winning Director (debbie allen) and, a Tony Winning actress (viola davis. The movie is getting amazing reviews and EVERY news outlet is picking this thing up for a reason, it is good.

I must admit I am a Big Kelly Fan but Curio you are very wrong.
Kelly first CD was great but when she was with AI she was an average artiat Her new Management gave her the chance to do the music she wanted to do and become the Pop Superstar she is today
I like Fantasia also and I am proud she was the first person from AI to get 4 Grammy Nods on her first CD
She is also the only AI alumni that has been asked by musical greats to appear on their CD
It is good to be great alone but super when other people want you to enhance their projects

Anyway, time to close this article to guest reactions, as it seems, Clay Aiken fans suddenly don't seem bad in retrospect to me.
Fact is that you can be respected by other artists as much as you want, if your album sales are below par the record industry where you're shoveled into will try to get those sales up. ( legally and illegally for that matter.. ) Fact is people that listen to mainstream radio haven't heard much fantasia after her initial single, while for example Kelly and Carrie (even though she was country) got airtime on mainstream stations.
Also in a nielsen media research in 2005, they compared the album sales of all the winners, the person who was very much below par was Fantasia. ( ie, the person that sold the least number of copies, for whatever reason.)
We're talking about a direct-to-tv movie here, not a white-screen mega millions production. I believe SciFi has an original-movie each week. It's not like she is going to the white-screen.
Generally every movie that is made directly for TV. a producer along the line decided that the 'story-line' isn't interesting enough to make it on the big-screen. Resulting also that the money spent on that movie is below par. While i'm sure that Debbie Allen made it visually attractive.

Dude, the way you keep mentioning Clay and his fans (the claymates) it sounds like you have a crush on him (and perhaps them as well).
However, talk about "claymate" you've got nerve, your posting is all claymate style. They are the one's who try to find any excuse in the book to make something appear smaller then it is, to make it look like it was done because it was turned down by others. Your whole entire article is a representation in the way a claymate would write something. I am sure because you keep mentioning Clay and his claymates that you are likely one yourself.
BTW, unless your butt is Clive Davis why the heck to do you care what Fantasia sells? You aren't going to get a dime of the money whether she sells 500K or 5 million. I bet she has more money at 22 then you'll make in your entire life.
The point of the movie is that a movie was NEVER supposed to happen to begin with. She wrote an autobiography a year ago and Lifetime came to HER and purchased the movie rights. Fantasia was not shopping her book around to movie studios, had she been we would have definitely heard about it. Now, I am sure that the movie studios when they see the finished product are going to be mad that they didn't jump on it. However, I think lifetime is a perfect place for Fantasia to take her story, not to big that it seems like she's doing it for money and not to small that it reaches no one.
Bottomline, it is an honor when any author is asked by ANYONE to sell their story so that a motion can be made out of it.
Mister web owner, you can put all types of "twists" on why she's made this movie if you want to, bottomeline is, it is a movie directed by an Emmy and Golden Globe winner and if it's as good as everyone who's seen the clips has said, it might even end up being a Golden Globe winner.

Lifetime is making more and more movies with stars including Kim Basinger who's movie will premier in September. If an Oscar Winner isn't ashamed to star in a "made for tv movie", no one should.
If Fantasia is being downed for starring in her own made for tv movie, then Usher could be downed for starring on "broadway" as broadway is definitely a step down for him but it is something he wants to do so it isn't a step down at all. That would be silly. Noone is taking a step down when they are doing something they want to do and this is CLEARLY SOMETHING FANTASIA WANTS TO DO!
