Rock Star: Supernova puts three girls in bottom curlio
 2006-08-02 22:06:35
Television The girls of Rock Star: Supernova have long been behind the guys, with only a few exceptions. Tonight, three of the girls have landed in the bottom three. Unfortunately they did not eliminate all three, so two of them get the chance to once again prove they are far behind those in the lead.

First up was my favorite part of the show - the part where I have to rewind 20 times to figure out what Mumbly-Skunkly says! Back at the mansion after the show, Magni toasts the best show ever - wondering how they will top it next week. He suggests that Lukas Rossi might remember his words. Mumbly-Skunklyh says that he forgot his lyrics and wasn't himself. Everyone has a bad night says MS, and that was his. Broodstar knows how MS feels, as he was there a few weeks ago. Broodstar says that MS had brought everything until now and it was the first time it was akward. Skunky mumbles that he deserves to be in the bottom three, everyone deserves to be on the chopping block at some point. He continues to mumble that the one song that sounds like supernova and he screws it up.

Dave Navarro first talks to Mumbly-Skunkly, telling him he was killing it in the competition, and wondering what happened. MS says that he's only human and it was his turn to screw up. He will take it like a man though, adding that if he gets into the bottom three, which should happen, he knows he is good enough to get out of it. Honestly that was my first moment of respect for Lukas.

Next up was Dave and Dana, with Dave wondering if she got her tattoo. Dana did get a tattoo, of something that is in her soul, a treble clef on her lower hip. She says she's getting a bass clef on the other side. Dave tells her to get it on the back side. Gilby Clarke talks to Ryan Star about why everyone didn't fight for the chance to play with Tommy Lee. Broodstar says it's a good question, and they didn't want to choose the song merely because it was Tommy. He adds that he hopes to get a chance to play with him later on. Then it was Dave and Soccer Mom, Patrice Pike. PattyP said it was amazing to play with Tommy, but she wanted eyes in the back of her head. Dave asks Patty if it was worth risk, Patty says that every song selection is risky. Dave interrupts that he means that being up there with Tommy gives people a sense of what it will look and feel like if Patty wins. Patty says that if you can't pull it off, you shouldn't be on the show. Tommy tells Magni that they know it's hard to be away from family, especially the "little monkeys" and wonders how Magni will handle it. Magni questions that they were moving to Iceland right? He adds that it's in the middle of Europe and the US, thus good for all.

On to the announcement of the encore. Jason asked who thought they deserved the encore and only Dana Andrews and Storm Large raised their hands. Jason Newsted said they wanted to see more hands, but adds that luckily they choose. Amazingly enough, it went to Broodster, Ryan Star. Ryan tells Brooke he needs a piano and so they break for commercial. After the break, Brooke plugs spaces.live.com where you can make your own space dedicated to Rock Star. Then Broodstar performs and again it was great.

Then it was time for the meat, as Brooke announced who was in the bottom at some point during the voting. The Aussie Ken Doll, Toby Rand was in the bottom, much to my satisfaction, Pamela-lite, Jill Gioia, Skipper Dana Andrews, Zayra Alvarez (who shouted it "I knew it") and Soccer Mom Patrice Pike (and someone shouted "WHAT" though I don't know who). First into the bottom, also to my satisfaction was Jill. Gilby Clarke tells her she's an amazing singer, but the voters put her there again. Jill decided to do a song by one of her favorite bands, Heart. She chose "Alone" because it will show the deeper richer tones they have been wanting to hear. I wanted her to do bad. I want her to go home. But she did ... not suck. I'm sorry y'all I can't give it more than that. You'll have to give me time to adjust first! To top it all off, she got a flipping Standing Ovation from Supernova after her performance.

Brooke asks the rest of them if it's true that some of them skipped out on House Band practice. Toby and Dana admit they did. Skipper is therefore number two to the bottom. Jason asks why she missed rehearsal. Dana said it was a horrible reason, she was at a spa. Jason says it's so "rock and roll singer" and Dave said she should win by default for that. Dana adds that she didn't want the House Band to have to wait on them, as it would have been another 30 minutes before she got there. She sang "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals, but added a more modern vibe to it. It was weird and while I didn't like it, I didn't dislike it.

Toby and Zayra were both off the hook while Soccer Mom was in the bottom. Tommy said he thought they were awesome. Patrice tells everyone that she really means this and she is going to do her best. She picked "Eternal Life" by Jeff Buckley, who she called one of the greatest rockers of our generation. I usually don't like to admit this as I tend to get yelled at, but I've never heard the song, so I'm not the best judge of it. I didn't like it, but then again I don't like Soccer Mom.

Gilby started out by giving the remaining rockers a new assignment for next week. They will get a new Supernova track and have to individually write lyrics and melody to it. Then he went on to the good news that Jill made terrible creative choices, but saved herself tonight. Dana meanwhile was developing well, but they're not sure if they have enough time. Patrice meanwhile is a good singer and performer but it's hard to ignore her being in the bottom three with Tommy Lee performing behind her.

On to Tommy, who told Dana that she's come far but not far enough to keep on the show. Dana took it very well however. Dave told her she's grown and is a joy to watch. He wondered if she regrets getting her tattoo, and she didn't. She thanked them for the opportunity and experience. She also agreed that she needs to grow. Jason told her she had such a positive, fun energy that she brought to the house. He adds to everyone that they are also looking at how people behave, how they handle the new things that happen. Dana is the youngest, but the most mature in how she's handling everything.

It was sad to not see Soccer Mom or Pamela-lite go, but Pamela-lite did manage to save herself. I don't think she'll manage it much longer though. She can obviously do ballads, but she sucks at rock. I was very happy to note that the band isn't impressed by bad behaviour like INXS was. I'm certain they have all had their fill of * bandmembers.

Interesting suggestions. But I wouldn't necessarily say that letting the bottom 3 choose their own song vs the band choosing is necessarily better. For INXS is made complete sense as they were looking for singers who fit their music well. So why not have the bottom 3 try to salvage themselves by demonstrating it.

I like the idea of Supernova selecting the songs to ensure of better song selection. But at the same time, it's a useful clue that you shouldn't stick around if, for example, you pick a Duran Duran song after the band urges you to do something that rocks a bit more.

I kind of like the idea of a band veto or immunity for the encore. But the lack of either hasn't stopped the band from protecting contestants. That's probably what happened with Patrice this week.

Some interesting suggestions Will. I like the immunity idea from the encore, makes it that bit more interesting. I'd like to see some guest judges on like they promised earlier on...maybe it'll happen. But one of the things that really bugs me is that most of the contestants are from the States only. There is sooo much talent out there and Europe hasn't even got a look in. Who knows...it is an American show I guess. Some international flavour would be nice.
What possible bands or make-up bands could they come up with for series 3??? I'd like to hear some suggestions...I'm outta ideas. Alice in Chains and Van Halen were thrown around but unlikely. Maybe the winner gets to keep the house band and start his or her own set up with tours and the lot?? Who knows.
Peace.

I don't know who writes the opening review on this board, but whoever it is should be ashamed of himself/herself. It is disgraceful and cowardly to label the competitors with demeaning epithets. Week by week, they show great courage in competing -- more courage than the writer above who hides behind anonymity. I suggest that he/she closes down this board and joins the local get-a-life society.

We is so gladed to has youse heer to hepl andd me uses goot peopeel them biggie words is hardly soes I looks up em"An epithet (Greek - επιθετον and Latin - epitheton; literally meaning 'imposed') is a descriptive word or phrase. It has various shades of meaning when applied to real or fictitious people, divinities, objects and biological nomenclature. It also means a derogatory word or phrase used to insult someone. See List of political epithets.

Linguistics
In linguistics an epithet is often metaphoric, essentially a reduced or condensed appositive. Epithets are sometimes attached to a person's name, as what might be described as a glorified nickname. Not every adjective is an epithet, even worn clichs. An epithet is linked to its noun by long-established usage and some are not otherwise employed.

Some epithets are known by the Latin term epitheton necessarium because they are required to distinguish the bearers, e.g. as an alternative to ordinals after a prince's namesay Richard the Lionheart, or Charles the Fat alongside Charles the Bald. Still the same epithet can be used repeatedly, in different spheres of life and/or joined to different names, say Alexander the Great as well as Suleiman the Great.

Other epithets can easily be omitted without serious risk of confusion, and are therefore known (again in Latin) as Epitheton ornans; thus the classical Roman author Virgil systematically called the armsbearer of Aeneas, his main hero, fidus Achates, the epithet being fidus, which means faithful or loyal.

In contemporary usage, epithet is also used to refer to an abusive or defamatory phrase, such as a racial epithet.

There are also specific types of epithets, such as the kenning, also known as periapsis, which appears in works such as Beowulf. An example of a kenning would be the term whale-road, meaning "sea".

[edit]
Letters
Epithets are characteristic of the style of ancient epic poetry, most notably that of Homer. See epithets in Homer. When James Joyce uses the phrase "the snot-green sea" he is playing on Homer's familiar epithet "the wine-dark sea" with a kind of mock-epithet.

the Greek term Antonomasia, in rhetoric, means substituting any epithet or phrase for a proper name, as Pelides, or the son of Peleus, for Achilles; the opposite substitution of a proper name for some generic term is also sometimes called antonomasia, as Cicero for an orator.
[edit]
Religion
In Ancient Pagan religions, as well as Greek and Roman, a deity's epithet (or rather each one: especially the main gods often had many) generally reflected a particular aspect of that god's life and role, as Apollo Musagetes is "Apollo, [as] leader of the Muses" and therefore patron of the arts & sciences (hence the word mouseion= museum), while Phoibos Apollo is the same deity but as shining sun-god.

Some epithets were applied to several deities of a same pantheon, rather accidentally if they had a common characteristic, or deliberately emphasizing their blood- or other ties; thus in pagan Rome, several divinities (including demi-gods, heroes) were given the epitheton Comes as companion of another (usually major) divinity. An epithet can even be meant for collective use, e.g. in Latin pilleati 'the felt hat-wearers' for the brothers Castor and Pollux.

Alternatively the epithet may identify a particular and localized aspect of the god, sometimes already ancient during the classical epochs of Greece and/or Rome, such as a reference to the mythological place of birth or other genesis. It often appears to refer simply to a main center of veneration and/or some cultic tradition there, but often this is actually the result of an intercultural equation of a divinity with another, usually older, that is generally considered its pendant; thus most Roman gods and goddesses, especially the twelve main ones, had traditional counterparts in Greek, Etruscan and most other Mediterranean pantheons, e.g. Jupiter as father of the Olympian Gods with Zeus, but in specific cult places there may even be a different equation, based on one specific aspect of the divinity. Thus the Greek word Trismegistos "thrice grand" was first used as a Greek name for the Egyptian god of science and invention, Thot, and later as an epitheton for the Greek Hermes and finally the fully equated Roman Mercurius (Mercury; both were also messenger of the gods).

Similar practices still exist in Christianity (Catholic and Orthodox, not Protestant) in the veneration of Christ and, mainly, of the saints, e.g. Our Lady of Lourdes, - of Mercy etc.

[edit]
Secular Matters
[edit]
Genealogy
As first names are often repeated within a family, especially often from (grand)father to (grand)son, the inevitable risk of confusion (at least while both are alive) has often given rise to the use of epitheta that merely aim at a distinction for the purpose of identification, regardless whether that constitutes any meaningful description. Thus frequently used are terms like 'senior/ junior' (in Latin often Maior/Minor; can again become confusing a generation or two later), or even (often Roman) numerals; alternatives are legion, such as places of origin/work/residence..., profession, physical characteristics, etcetera.

[edit]
Politics and military
In historical, journalistic and other writings, one often encounters epitheta, but it is worthwhile distinguishing different types. While the same rationale as in the genealogical section above may apply, in some cases posthumously (what ruler would otherwise accept such epitheta as the fat, the bold?) politicians, unlike ordinary citizens, often have some control over public opinion and generally more of an interest in their image, so whether forged for themselves or contrived by opponents, their epitheta often carry a political message.

Indeed while these differ from official titles as they don't express any legal status, epitheta have been awarded and adopted (though the official procedure may provide for the formal decision to be issued by another institution, such as a legislative assembly) by statesmen in power for fairly formal use, not unsimilar in purpose to various sinecures, knighthoods or peerage-type titles in post-feudal societies: they confer prestige without any legal authority, so essentially a matter of image or even propaganda, aimed at a domestic and/or foreign target audience. Examples of such epithets are the various traditions of victory titles (see there) awarded to meritous generals and rulers since Antiquity, and the epithets awarded to entire units, e.g. such adjectives as 'Fidelis' 'loyal' to various Roman legions

You are so rights them eptitits is so fun and I wants some moer. yousss soooo smatr !!!! thanksss yu !! Willll !

1. Complain about me hiding "behind anonymity" and then reply as a completely anonymous guest - really gives you credibility huh?

2. The curlio.com community have together come up with the "nicknames" behind the contestants, we find it a fun way to refer to the contestants (and many of us even like those whom we have given odd nicknames). So before you judge, you may want to take the time to read through some old news items first, as you just tend to make a fool of yourself otherwise. The only nickname I have personally come up with is Scary Chick for Dilana, the rest were all either group efforts or suggestions from the other members.

3. If you like, we'd be happy to explain our nicknames to you.

The guests are really a drag. I love how eager he/she/it is to defend the honor of the contestants but wastes no time dragging Curlio's good name through the mud.

As I understand it, people who go on reality shows are seeking exposure. See the recent Phil Ritchie episode if you doubt me. 'Being exposed' literally means being naked. The connotation is similar in that exposure means that a contestant puts him or her self out there for others to evaluate and critique. We here at Curlio enjoy the evaluating and critiquing part. Nicknames add to our enjoyment. The moment anyone goes on a reality show, they forfit their right to privacy and permit all of America to form opinions about them. You, 'guest', certainly can't be upset at us for doing what the contestants hoped we would.

Besides, I bet the contestants (with the possible exception of Brooding Star) have a SENSE OF HUMOR (which you, dear 'Guest', should seriously consider investing in) and would be tickled at some of the nicknames we've come up with. I've heard of many reality TV stars who join discussion boards where they were lampooned to thank the posters for the attention.

Oh, and Will? Do you have some sort of reverse ADD where you can't stop paying attention to things? Your posts are getting longer and longer . . . ok, like I'm one to talk, but I miss YOUR sassy writing which I'd much rather read than a quote. Luv ya, N bonk bonk bonk bonk

Whats wrong with being a guest? It's also not only easy to be critical but fun too. If it's cowardly to have an opinion then label me what you will. Curlio is a top website and they do a great job. Nicole was (I think) referring to the idiotic branch of guests that give the intelligent ones a bad name (in this particular case it was the person who disliked our nicknames for the rockers). There are good guests and bad guests. One of the reasons the guests like our website is that you tend to be almost completely anonymous. Staff can tell the difference between you, but members can't unless the guests take the time to use some name instead of guest when they reply. But that exact reason is why members tend to dislike guests, as it's really hard to tell the difference between people.

To all the regular guests who continue to reply as guests I would urge you to at least change that name when you reply. You're still a guest, but at least it will say "Sally" so we know who you are. Or sign your posts with a nickname - something that lets everyone easily see the difference. Of course you could register (yeah, I have to plug that) as it's free, easy, and we don't send you annoying emails (beyond the first one required to activate your account naturally).

Yep, use your name or something with your post. I use my real name as does Nichole, Shelly and others! I do so because I want to be accountable and exist as something other than an anonymous, web ghost. On the web you have the choice to be part of the ether or create a representative entity, you choose, but when you have a history and bring that to the table you expand the depth of your communication. You know like experiencing a triple rainbow or a hurricane or the birth of a child with an old friend. You are free to choose, but there are too many Mr. Anonymouses out there in my opinion, I do want to add to the alienation and emptyness well all sense. Will -oops-

Just wanted to chime in with the fact that Storm is my cousin, a close cousin, and trust me, she has a wonderful sense of humour. My aunt went out to visit her the other day and says that most of the contestants are hysterical (so I would assume that they have a good sense of humour too :-) ) I know that Storm would get a kick out of the names, ESPECIALLY if they were her friends only because she (and her friends who I know from other places, which means we can assume also her friends on RS) sees that everyone has a different personality and they all have quirks AND where's the fun in life if you can't make fun of the quirks of it?

Today is a runon sentence day Hope people can find some sense in that.

P.S. I felt bad for Ryan on the reality show ... I can't write anything if I'm not inspired, I'd have had trouble getting a song done at all!

Wow, I just saw the reality clip on MSN, I wonder if our Sprout is going to do it, I sure hope so, I am interested in his and everyone else's take. I won't mention anything but, Wow didn't Dilanta's effort seemed especially weak relative to her efforts so far and she seemed a bit self assured at illusory results. When you seem to be really good people expect good to better!

What do you all think. Please come home to your peeps o'master Sprout, we are your minion. Will

I read but have not yet listened to (work pre-cludes) the original songs written and performed on the webcast. They are now on the website and can be heard in their entirity. Orininally there were mainly snipets and no coverage of some of the singers, there. The poster, where I read this, says he thinks it was quite telling and said he had expected more from Dilana and Mangi! Well, I hope to hear them between now and the culling. It could have an impact on the departee!! Will

I do not follow this much nearly as much as I follow AI. I don't know why since the band on Rockstar is 50 times better. Maybe it is because of my dislike for Chris Navarro. Anyway, I Tivo this show every week and watch the only person who caught my eye when I watched the first show - Dilana. This person is so awesome and versatile, there is no need to watch anyone else. If Dilana does not win, it would be a crime for one thing, but she is getting a lot of exposure and I am sure that she has a great career ahead of her regardless. I will certainly buy her album!

I suffered with poor dial-up for years but really enjoy my DSL. One thought for you, is to get someone with broad band to phone you up and let you listen to the show, that would be pretty good. As you can see, I know how to survive on scraps. ha. If you had a tol-free number I'd be glad to! Maybe a friend in your area, you'd really enjoy the reality show. Will

I am really sorry guys – I am caught up in circumstances beyond my comprehension and hence I was / am unable to find time and present the reality episodes recaps! Trust me; not being able to report is killing me more than y’all know! I mean look at the love here! So please bear with me for few more days, I promise I will report the two episodes I have missed!

Hey Will & momROCKS,

Y’all are good writers and please don’t deny that in modesty – do ME a huge flavour – at least inform the peeps what y’all saw on the show – I mean just give them a gist of things! Ok fine, I will share my views after y’all tell the peeps! I promise!

Thanks for the kind words y’all!

Dear Dear Will,

We have lot of catching up to do! :P

Sorry people – Please understand I hate this more than y’all!

Cheers!

Oh and Curlio – I wish you had a broadband!

Who is messin' with my Poet, you better watch out I will put some severe whup-arse on anyone who does, I ain't kiddin' and it ain't the grape soda and pork rinds talkin'!!

I wish you could all see the online stuff, it is reall good and you can see the hour show in about 30 minutes. Just a few notes from me.

After recieving gifts of the best Gibsons worth about 7 to 10 thou apiece, most folks never get one of these, really!! The ten rockers were assigned the task of writing songs and performing for the boys. They mainly focused on how quickly Skunkboy and Crazybeatch did theirs and how long Ryan took to do his.

When they played em, I like Jill, Stormy, and Ryan's the best, I wish you could all see for yourself. They seem to like Patrice and Lucas, but I didn't. I think Ryan's time paid off he did the best job and I don't like him. Storm had the musicality to use a bigboy word. If Jill would shut up and learn to control her power, she could be a voice to recon with in Rock, she is so annoying though.

The song selections went up and Dilana relished the chance to study them in depth, seeming like a child who got to the Christmas cookies before everyone else. She will sing with Gilby, who I really like, seems like a sweetheart. She wanted and got "can't get fooled again" by the Who, she may have bitten off more than she can chew, she may be more limited than we suspect. On the show she seem to purposefully trick or entice Lucas to sing Creep which she by the way she spoke would show "if he really deserves to be there"!

Wow, I thought she would have know what a strong contender he is, although, I too think he is limited. He will either score big or continue his downfall.

It will be an interesting show, Dilana is not quite the Mother Theresa of Rock, she is more like the Teachers Pet hall Monitor of Rock, I know that is obscure, but I am not the great Sprouster! Will -oops- -oops- -oops-

Ok Sprout as you command I'm not worthy ... but here goes: First a recap-Patrice & Tommy Lee rocking, Magni singing his heart out, Dana tried her hardest to be a rock star, Jill over sang, and Ryan kicked his song.
To the mansion: Everyone toasted "To Dana", Lukas (skunk boy) thought Dana had learned quite a bit in her five weeks. toby wandered why Patrice was in the bottom three....Patrice wondered if she looked TOO angery? She is all worked up because she didn't think she should have been in the bottom three. Jill is happy to still be there?
cut to Ryan and Toby....Ryan says Brooke asked to lay on the piano while he did his oncore. toby smeared cake or food on Ryan...then a big chase insued.......Look OUT....Gilby Clark pulls up on a motorcycle. He leads them in to see a gift. Each received a Gibson!!! Gilby then plays the song they are to write lyrics and rhythm too. Ryan says he loved the sound of the song the first time he heard it last time the guys played in the house. Then Gilby dropped the bomb....they had to have the song ready for the next day!! Gilby departs.
Ryan begins brooding!!!! Lukas thinks he has it made, he wrote his song quickly. Lukas has profound words " songs that you over think, usually they tend to be over thought?" Skunky at his best?? Then skunk telling Toby his word choice is harsh. Jump to Dilana writing with Magni listening. Storm writes as she jogs on the tread mill. Ryan brooding as ever....has trouble with the task. Skunk boy shows up to boast that he is finished....Lukas (skunk boy) wants to throw a wrench in on Ryan's work machine by playing what he wrote. Ryan's up till two writing...Lukas shows up again to interupt Ryan s' quiet time. NOW jump to the contestants playing their songs for super nova...more talk of writing quickly...there's Ryan who was up all night. clip of Ryan singing....Jason didn't really react to anyones songs...he just kept writing notes. Tommy and Gilby just rocked along to the ones they seemed to like. then a clip of Storm, then Jill over singing again. A clip of Toby....really didn't show the song. Dilana they said was interesting....does that mean they liked it? Jason said corny and Tommy Lee couldn't remember it....no good Dilana......Up Next Lukas....dirty and sexy like himself....his words not mine. The guys seemed to like it ....but not me....I liked Josh and Ryan, and maybe Toby the best! That's all for now...I have to go watch the show for tonight.
You have a hard job Sprout....I bow to you.

Yep, use your name or something with your post. I use my real name as does Nichole, Shelly and others! I do so because I want to be accountable and exist as something other than an anonymous, web ghost. On the web you have the choice to be part of the ether or create a representative entity, you choose, but when you have a history and bring that to the table you expand the depth of your communication.
which is exactly why I am stuck with blaze... history, accountability, etc. (even though very few on curlio, except for, well, curlio, dusty, the bigO, even know of my previous life) Hopefully now some here are getting to know me too. Good or bad, I am who I am, like me or not, I am me... hiding behind "guest" just isn't who I want to be. Hopefully one can make friends along the way on this journey of life.
