Rock Star: Supernova stripped down the show this week, as the rockers performed with a string quartet for a more unplugged show. Naturally since it was a stripped down show, Tommy Lee and Dave Navarro started stripping, much to the delight of the crowd.
We then saw a recap of what happened at Las Vegas and during song selection. You can read all about it in Sprout's excellent recap. They highlighted the drunken madness of the rockers and the penthouse suite before they moved on to the song selection. At song selection there were two awesome things to fight over, a performance with Gilby Clarke and an original song. As Sprout covered, Dilana made Toby Rand run around naked to get the Gilby performance. Meanwhile Ryan Star let Zayra Alvarez have the original.
Back to the show, and Tommy and Dave had to get dressed again as the censors got the them. Dave was stunned that only one person raised their hand for the original - for a chance to really show Supernova what they can do. Jason Newsted tells them that most of the rockers got onto the show for their writing talent and he was underwhelmed by the response to the chance to play one of their originals. Gilby thinks that the rockers think they will be around longer and will get to do it later. He also loved that Toby ran around naked for him.
First up was Zayra with her original - Lluvia De Mar. I thought it was a beautiful song and a lovely performance. If anything proved that she wasn't right for the band though, it was that. I still love her, and would like her to stay around for a few more weeks. Dave congratulated her on fighting for her original, saying it was a great job. Tommy thought it sounded like a Massive Attack song, but didn't think it was right for them. Gilby wants her to rock and show them what she will do for them. Jason wanted to know how it felt performing her original, Zayra said it was golden.
Magni, wearing a lovely white suit, performed Starman by David Bowie. Every week I like Magni more and more. His performance this week was very good. Magni and Tommy talk about how Magni doesn't remember anything from Vegas. Tommy tells Magni that he barely remembers anything. Gilby told Magni that he missed a perfect opportunity for a sing-a-long with the audience. Magni said that in "the old country" they sing. That's very true, Europeans sing along so well that it actually throws off some American performers who aren't prepared for it. I remember one performer who came to Europe, and just let the audience sing a whole song. Anyhow, then Jason and Tommy tease Magni about looking so good. Tommy says he only looks like that for court.
Soccer Mom, Patrice Pike was up next with Message in a Bottle by the Police. Hopefully this week's dismal performance will seal her fate and send her soccer-kid-toting butt home. Dave thought it lacked in intensity, as he wants to see her get into someone's face. Gilby was hoping she would do something original with the arrangement. Dave said that she's probably feeling a bit hammered (I get the feeling a lot of the hammering was cut) but says there is a heck of a performer in her and they want to see it.
Lukas Rossi performed Chad Kroeger's Hero. He was singing from his throat again, making him Mumbly again. So Mumbly-Skunkly reappeared this week. It was a good performance, just not as awesome as last week. Dave liked listening to the different characters in his voice. Tommy hates when people sit down, Lukas blamed it on Vegas (see rant below for my thoughts on that). Gilby loved the falsetto. Jason warned him to watch closing off his vocals, as he knows what Lukas is capable of and won't let him get away with it.
Storm Large was saddled with Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive. I thought it was awesomely weird and nice, particularly with her word change here and there. Dave was unimpressed, as last season Marty Casey (oh how I miss Marty - he would have been PERFECT for Supernova) had "Hit me Baby One More Time" and Dilana had the Cyndi Lauper tune earlier this season and they each did better. He hated it. Storm used the Vegas excuse (once again, see rant below). Tommy didn't like it. Gilby said that the remaining rockers are the contenders and they should get up there and pretend they're in Supernova.
Toby Rand, together with Gilby Clarke performed Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel. Honestly I think the commercial is better, but who am I to judge? He played those little drummy things and looked rather cute doing so. Overall it was rather good, just not awesome. Dave thought it was great that he went the extra mile to rock with Gilby. Gilby said that it's a difficult song to play, and Toby's vocals fit right in. Tommy said that after seeing him run around naked, there was no question about his commitment. It was nice to see him be a maniac, and Tommy added that Toby has a nice ass.
Ryan Star, in a very BroodStar way, sang Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight. It was an awesome performance, very brooding. Dave said it was the best performance of the night, and added an extra shout out for the string section, particularly the blonde. Gilby enjoyed Ryan's transformation over the last couple of weeks, and likes the extra effort. Jason likes that Ryan is really trying, as it means something. Ryan adds that he really wants the job.
Dilana was last up performing Harry Chapin's Cat's in the Cradle. It was an awesome performance. She's just a spellbinding performer. Dave tells Ryan he spoke too soon, as that was the best performance of the night. He said he still has chills, and adds that his dad is there tonight, and if he wasn't he would be an emotional wreck. Jason loved the modern feel on an old classic. Gilby said that Dilana's low register is strong, but then she went higher and knocked them all out. Dilana says she's going to keep going because she told them all that she's the one.
No big surprise, Patrice and Zayra were in the Bottom 3 at the end of show. What was surprising was to find Toby there. I didn't think it was awesome, but it was good. Poor Supernova are going to get a complex, they keep landing the person who performs with them in the Bottom three! Next time Supernova complains that no one jumps at the chance to sing with them, one of the rockers needs to fire back "Hell no, y'all are a jinx! Everyone singing with you lands in the bottom!"
Okay, now on to my rant. After reading about the reality show recap (once again, big thanks to Sprout, as I know he's got problems but does it anyhow!) and seeing tonight's show I really want to bitch slap some of the rockers. Do they not know that they will be joining Tommy * Lee in Supernova? Hello, Tommy "I can drink two cases of beer and still keep the beat" Lee! If they can't handle a day in Vegas, then do a show a couple of days later what does that say about them? Most of the time they'll be peforming THAT NIGHT after drinking! I'd go with one of the people who can contain themselves, or at least hold their alcohol. True rockers can at least crawl onstage and not offer a "I partied too hard" lame-ass excuse.
So, Zayra or Soccer Mom will leave tomorrow, everyone else seems to be safe for now but then again you never really know.
Behind "What Made America Famous?" "Cats in the Cradle" is probably my all time favorite Harry Chapin song so when I heard that it was going to be sung this week, I was a little skeptical. All my doubts disappeared after Dilana sang the first verse. She has such a presence about her and she kept true to the meaning and passion of the song - it was incredible! If Harry Chapin were alive right now, he'd be patting her on the back and congratulating her on a wonderful performance, guaranteed. If this performance, coupled with all the previous ones, does not solidify the notion that Dilana has a very real chance to front Supernova, then people need to wake up. If a chick has any chance at fronting the band it's her.
She really can sing! I didn't think Zayra was capable of singing so beautifully, but she sounded great tonight. I do wish, however, that I could speak Spanish. I have hated every other performance, and it makes me wonder if it is because she doesn't feel comfortable singing in English.
Dusty, I miss Marty also. You are right; I think he would have been perfect for Supernova.
It seems Zayra is much more comfortable singing in Spanish. I noticed her vocals on her myspace page (which are mostly Spanish) just sound a lot better. The song was very nice. But definitely not Supernova material. It was nice to hear Tommy Lee reinforce my thoughts that she's got a Hispanic trip hop (Shakira meets Massive Attack) thing going on. Beautiful song. Too bad it's not right for Supernova.
I was, to be honest, a bit underwhelmed by most of the performances. Even Dilana's. She was good, but I'm not hearing much variety from her. She's got stage presence in spades though.
Magni was solid. Ryan was good also, as was Lukas.
Storm blew it. Patrice was boring (ruining one of my favorite songs of all time), and I'm tired of this Alanis Morrisette smile/grin she's got going two-thirds of the time.. They'll be in the bottom three.
Toby I have mixed feelings on. He was OK, I guess.
Zayra - I really loved her original song (don't faint, Nicole)! It showed she really wants to be Selena and would be darn good at it, ergo she doesn't belong in Supernova.
Magni - good, but not his best performance. He looked great!!
Patrice - She has a better voice than I first thought. She'a a pop singer playing at being a rocker and belongs on AI, not on Rock Star. She needs to go.
Lukas - I can't stand this guy...watching him is just painful. He sounded great last week on "Creep" but his other performances have been AWFUL. Somebody send this boy to rehab and put him out of misery!
Storm - I agree with Dusty, I thought it was okay and good in a weird way. I thought she sounded better than the bashing she got from the boys...
Toby - Love the song, hated the performance. I can see how he landed in the early bottom three. Am I the only one who thought Gilby did a crappy job on the guitar line?
Ryan - Great performance!! Perfect song for him! I loved it even more than the Phil Collin's version.
Dilana - WOW! AWESOME! This girl can command a stage!
I find myself watching Rock Star just to see Magni and Dilana. The rest have stellar moments but just aren't "bringing it" consistently.
hello one and all
so \finally we actually all realise (including me) just how good a voice zayra has !!!!! she was really really gud !
i really hope that she stays on the show and that soccer moom gets eliminated. boy did she ruin a nice song. honey if u don't have it u just gotta get the boot. also storm really surprised me ..... jeez girl do not ever in ur life give a sad excuse like that !!! and lukas AGAIN went back to the same screechy - high voice which really undermines his actual potential.
ryan really started to impress me and that is gud . dilana should win .
my top 5 have changed ----
dilana
ryan
zayra/toby/storm
magni
lukas
nyways ...go Z
no matter what u do u are always gonna be there on top. u go SOLID GURL !!!!!
so all u zayra lovers , show some solid luv
Up until tonight I hated Zayra, her voice, her outfits, just absolutely hated her. Most of the time I couldn't understand what she was singing. Tonight was a different story. Her voice was absolutely divine and the lyrics were beautiful. She was meant to be a latin music superstar. She set the stage with a great performance I hope someone was watching that will sign her. I will definitely buy her Cd's as long as she sings in spanish.
the whole show will come down to the little punk dude or the freaky chic with the colors in her hair. they are the only two with any look or balls. i fell bad for the rest..........not really
Zayra did herself justice tonight- but shes auditioning for Supernova? Are they goning to be a weird spanish band?? Me thinks not. Would be better suited to performing in Madrid nightclubs than in LA. Go home please, I can't take anymore! It's painful.
I lived on MOTLEY,MATALLICAanGUN'Smost of my life!I understand we need to grow up some but come on Jason called a f@#$_n song beautiful.that's just not right !ROCK ON IF YOU HAVE THE BALLS!
On the whole, I thought the show was a bit of a let down last night. More singers were bad than 'meh' and only a couple of strong performances. Here's what I thought:
Zayra: Well, it would be in such poor taste for me to start singing 'I told you so,' so I'll just humbly comment on how much I dug her bra/ballroom drappery ensemble. Oh, and for those of you who only speak English, the words were very lovely in Spanish and if you find the english translation, know that it doesn't do the song justice.
Magni: Here's the other solid performance of the night. However, coming after Z only kind of emphasizes how bland Magni is. He has superb vocals, but he reminds me of gourmet vanilla ice cream. No matter how rich or how creamy, wouldn't you always prefer mediocre chocolate because, come on!, it's chocolate.
Soccer Mom: I've got to give it up to mirrorball who articulated perfectly what bugs me about Patrice: "I'm tired of this Alanis Morrisette smile/grin she's got going two-thirds of the time." BINGO! That retarded little smile is what's been driving me nuts! No matter how many upper arm tattoos you cover yourself in, if you're grinning like you just made a really clever casserole, no one can take you seriously!!! Oh, and her vocals were very weak and I think SN is eyeing her for the boot with their 'you didn't change it up' comments.
Lukas: Lukas is much better if you just listen to him. I think his Shaka/Skunk/anorexic dwarf appearance works against him. I wish they gave the rockers makeovers--do a cross promotion with America's Next Top Model or Project Runway. Someone needs to clean the boy up!
Storm: Nice to see 'ol crazy eye' back. As I said last week she either gives too much (tonight) or too little (Queen,David Bowie, etc.). She is not consistent and that will be the downfall of her. However, I agree with Shen that she was not as bad as Dave and SN made her out to be and if she gets bottom three, she's been robbed!
Crocodile Randee: did ungodly things to that beautiful song. Seriously, one of the only performances that actually angered me. First, does he know that the song is about being committed to a mental institution? It's anything but light, poppy and deserving of some bongo drums. Secondly, his voice does not have the depth or richness to pull the song off. He sang the whole thing too fast and too high. Thirdly, his *didn't look that great in the reality clip. Toby Rand has officially made an enemy out of me and, after Soccer Mom leaves, expect to harp constantly on how he needs to go. SOLSBURY HILL: NEVER FORGET.
Brooding Starr: Well, it's nice to know that Ryan could brood his way through some '80s classics. The Brood goes on and on and on . . . Mr. Nicole and I enjoyed laughing out loud at him when he started because he managed to make the song even more melodramatic and over the top, therefore CHEESIER! He tried to pull it together at the end and give it a little more angst than Brood, but I think the drummer was the only one truly enjoying that performance.
Dilana: Turns out she's not invincible. Give her a crappy song (IMHO) and she's only mediocre with it. This was her worst performance thus far, but she's at the point where she's held to a higher standard than the others. Right now, her mediocre is still better than three or four of them giving it their best, but she'll need to start knocking them out of the park if she really wants to win. Last night was decidedly in the park.
From best to worst:
1. Zayra
2. Magni
3. Lukass
4. Dilana
5. Storm
6. Ryan
7. Patrice
8. Toby
Past performances will save Toby and Patrice gets the boot.
One last note on the Zayra luv . . . I hope all you regulars know that I enjoy giving you guys a hard time and I really respect those of you who are willing to say she was good when she was and she was bad when she wasn't so good. My love is irrational, it's true. For all you 'guests'---ZAYRA RAWKS! SHE'S THE BEST FRONT PERSON SUPERNOVA COULD HOPE FOR! SHE'S A STAR! SHE'LL SELL MORE ALBUMS THAN KELLY CLARKSON1111!!!!11!!!!!OMG
[offtopic]
I changed the owner of the article, as curlio apparently posted her review under my name.. (bad.. bad..)
[/offtopic]
Zayra was decently good last night, even her best performance of the season for her. However I didn't think she was the best of the night (sorry Nicole.) But by being so decently better than usual it also showed more clearly that she would be better in a completely different band than Supernova, or on her own. Of course then she'd have to compete with Shakira... and she can forget about winning that one. :P
sorry for the confusion folks. It was indeed I who posted the recap, not Dusty. That's the hazard of sharing the laptop, we forget to check who was logged in. We don't have the problem on our main computer - as I'm a dedicated Netscape user and he loves his Internet Explorer.

So I missed the show, but thanks to the recap and the web clips I can honestly say Dilana was the best of the night!!!! Aside from Zayra and Dilana everyone else underwhelmed me. Zayra's original song was beautiful even though I couldn't understand a lick of it! The emotions translated well and she sounded awsome. Could someone please give Ryan a Zoloft please?? I mean could he unwind a bit and have fun for more than a few nanoseconds? Perhaps I am in the minority on this but again I wasn't all that impressed with his performance. For me it's the same perfomance every week, just a different song.
Soccer mom really needs to go it's pretty sad when I would rather work than bother to watch her performance! I also did the same with Lukas, maybe because that song got way overplayed, I don't know but I didn't like it one bit. Poor Storm, that was chaotic, good in parts terrible in others, hopefully she gets a better song next week. I agree with Nicole on Magni's performance, it was pretty vanilla for me as well. Now for our own Ken Doll, I actually didn't mind his performance and actually kind of liked it. I was getting a bit of a Paul Simon vibe from him on that song, just funked up a bit more. My top to bottom:
For some reason my post didn't go through last week.
When I saw the song list, I was excited to see what they'd do. Some great songs for the second week in a row, although a little more melodic than rocking this time around.
Zayra .. wow! Just .. wow Absolutely beautiful. She just made herself a millionaire with that performance, in my opinion. Not woth Supernova, of course. Tht was never gonna happen. But Selena fans will have a new princess.
I was very underwhelmed by Magni. Then again, i ahven't really seen anything by Magni to wow me. How appropriate they went to Vegas, cause he reminds me of nothing more than a Vegas lounge act.
Patrice did a credible job with the Police tune. I've never been a fan of the Police, never saw what the fuss was about. One of Patrice's better performances, for what that's worth.
Lukas was superb. Nitpicking critique aside, that was a great use of the extended band he had. If not for Zayra's outstanding original, it'd be the best of the night. He's bounced back well from his dismal outing a couple weeks ago.
Storm started out a cappela, and it just sounded wrong .. then the band kicked in, and she started to pick itup .. it was building, and building .. and collapsed. I'm afraid we saw the best of Strom in week 1 .. she just hasn't done anything since to make me believe, and if she wasn't already out of the top 3, she definitely is now.
Toby Rand, with a little acoustic help from Gilby did .. ok. My critique on this song was more with the band than the singer (Yes, sacrilege, I know. Truth hurts. I heard the Dave Matthews Band perform this song awhile back, and the House band sounde dlike .. well, a house band in comparison.
Ryan Star taking on one of the greatest songs ever written .. and for the second week in a row it was hoorid. No .. horrid gives it too much credit. Just .. no .. it's so bad, I can't even describe it. Last week everyopne seemed to be unable to stop talkign about the masked thing, and ignored how horrible the singing was. This week was worse, which I didn't think possible. With back to back, the wosrt performances in the history of the show, Patrice should get another week.
Dilana .. my hands down favorite to win, once again showed an amazing ability with song selection. it was a bit disconcerting to hear her stay true to the male perspective .. and then, just as when she performed the Who .. she dropped a key verse. I know they need to cut the songs short for the show, but I have to question her decisions with that. it reminded me of the Karaoke versions where the cut out half the song. To top it off, she forgot the wods .. during a chorus! One of, if not the worst performance yet by Dilana. Complacency? Not in this business girl. Get back with it next week.
All in all, another excellent show. Paired with last weeks, and it's starting to compare to last year's groups. Unfortunately, both shows were marred by the mold of Ryan Star's performances.
Now, on to the comments to see if anyone else agrees with me.
Listen to rockstar.msn.com performances and you will see that Dilana cannot possibly front this band. The band unfortanetly needs a man...sorry ladies... the 4 guys left are capable of fronting the band! Ryan is coming on strong. Toby was awesome on that song last night. Lukkas is Tommy's fav and Magni can do everything.
Here are my thoughts on the performance (and I rated them 1-8)
7)Zayra - Amazing song but it doesn't work in this competition.
2)Magni - I thought it was great. That would be an easy song to screw up.
8)Patrice - Not strong enough still.
4)Lukas - Good, but.
5)Storm - Sounded great, but I think playing a disco song to join a rock band is a bad decision. Unless you can get it to sound like Nine Inch Nails.
6)Toby - Great song, but I think it was too much for him. He kept going off the beat and if it was intentional it didn't sound good enough.
1)Ryan - Amazing performance. It made me forget that this was a Phil Collins song that is played constantly on the radio.
3)Dilana -Good but for some reason it didn't move me like everybody else is saying.
Overall not bad, though overall I think I prefer the plugged in shows. There where a couple of memorable performances. I think Dilana has the best shot right now but I'm concerned after hearing her lyrics to a Supernova song from I think last weeks reality show. Man they where not very good. So it makes me wonder how important song writing will be in there decision.
........amateur night at the church social maybe ??? Or perhaps an evening of karaoke at the local tavern ?-------------These folks are very inept to say the least especially Zayra,Storm and Patrice. They put the S in SUCK ! Lukas "Eddie Munster" Rossi might have an edgy kind of look SN may be looking for,but his vox are thin as h*ll,and i don't see his voice cutting through this bands volume .
Latin Swirl is good at what she does, interesting girl, she is half way to divahood!
Lex Luthor will never defeat the Supernova chalice contenders. But, nice fellow!
Skunkie, well, did you ever notice how skunks look pretty in the wild but, you wouln't want one in your house.
It's Pat, sang a little better, but, I think she has limited impact with her performances, the crazy Texans and there are plenty of them (that was an endearment), might bully her through, that and the gay chics, they are like millitant Texans.
Stormy weather, well she is my favorite, and if the truth be told she did a better job with her song that ScaryB, she adapted it well. I like everything about her.
Ken doll, I think he doesn't have a real (the whole) package, if you get my metaphorical drift.
Ryan, needs less prima on his Donna!
ScaryBeatch should get a new pointy hat, anything new, please anything, (I sound like her when I sing into my little desk fan)
I think that Dave Navarro, is getting less and less connected with this show. He is so much less vested than last year. Does he seem less genuine to any of you or is it just me.
For all the D/ Scarlybeatch fans I hope you line up to buy her D sings Cat Stevens when it comes out I'm sure the money will flow. Kermit would out sell her.
Usually when folks are so rabid for no good reason, the house of cards falls quick when they go to lay the money down.
Dave is having a hard time, thanks to his breakup with Carmen. Now he has no one's awesome wardrobe to steal from. I think he and Zayra should hook up - the fashion statements they could make... oh, I get all sweaty just thinking about it.
"Now you know why lions eat their young" Capt. Phil Harris
I stand completely humbled by my lack of vision. I now have converted to the church of Lady Z. She was great last night and now we know why she's there. Although she's not the right person to front SN. As I sat there watching her last night I couldn't help but think, Nicole will be smiling tomorrow!!!! (I shall never doubt you and Curlio again.)
I thought it was an ok show. I was completely confused by the stripped down comments. I was expecting acoustic or acapella. Basiclly it was rockers attempting pop songs and I'm not sure how that is being stripped down.
I made that Alanis/Patrice connection last night as well. Patrice is out of her element and needs to go.
I thought Storm did ok. I don't think she deserved the bad comments she got.
I still don't think Lukas' personality is going to jell with Tommy Lee. There would be too much competition there.
Should be interesting tonight.
If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!
i would buy an album of z's in a second. if it sounded like she did last night, wow - that was fantastic. not for supernova and that may have been her swan song, but what a way to go out. in your face to everyone - she was beautiful!
