This week on Rock Star: Supernova, the song selection was turned over to the fans. Usually this spells doom, but it was an awesome show. If you missed the show tonight, I feel really bad for you. I also feel very bad for Supernova, who has to decide betwen six totally awesome performances who will go home tomorrow! On with the show and the recap.
We start out with a recap of last week's drama - Dilana's press problems, Dave's comments to her about it, and then a recap of what is covered in this week's webisode which was recapped wonderfully again this week by momROCKS. The recap basically went over Dilana's pity-party, and the whole glass-throwing thing. Back to the show where Dave Navarro wanted to put everything to rest once and for all. He asked Magni how his head was, Magni said he's cut himself worse shaving. Dave asked Dilana about tonight's performance. Dilana said she wants to rock the place. No one is perfect, and she fell hard. Now she wants to come back stronger than ever. She added that she loves her friends and won't do anything to hurt them again.
Then we got a recap of song selection, which was also covered in the webisode recap. This week was fan selection week, and all of the selections were the "wild cards" which were songs the rockers heard others do this season but did not do themselves.
First up was Lukas Rossi. Before each performance they played a little clip of comments from each rocker. Lukas talked about how honored he is to be here, as he's just a hard working musician working hard at what he wants to do. He added that he likes basketball and beer. He's just like everyone else, just wearing more makeup. He performed Lithium by Nirvana, as done earlier in the season by Dilana. He started out really slow and soft, then rocked it. It was an awesome performance, with him mostly not singing from his throat. House band sounded awesome too. He made it really different from Dilana's performance in the first episode. Dave loved the rearranging of the song. Tommy Lee says he likes to let the music do the talking, and that song talked. He too loved the arrangement. Gilby Clarke said it was his best performance yet. Jason Newsted told Lukas that he sang right, opened up and let go.
Next up was Magni, who said that he knows if he is in the bottom three again he'll probably be gone. So he needs to get people from other countries to vote for him. He (jokingly I might add) says that he's better looking than Toby and then maligns Lukas and Ryan Star. He adds that he even learned the language of the American people. Ryan performed I Alone by Live earlier in the season in his usual brooding way, but Magni's version was different enough to stand out. He performed wonderfully and walked out through the audience to Supernova's platform to sing to the audience there and to Supernova. Dave wanted him to stay up there to tell him to his face he was awesome. Tommy wanted him to walk out all the way to the back. Magni said he thought about it, but said the little voice told him there's no lighting and he had to look good. Gilby said that although Magni is always solid, this week he gave that extra something Magni was looking for.
After the break, there was a plug for Supernova tour tickets, as they are on sale. If you buy tickets before midnight you may win a trip to the New Year's Eve show in Las Vegas.
Then it was time for Broodstar himself, Ryan Star. Ryan talked about how he was lost at the beginning, but is doing better every week now. He feels like he's gaining momentum. He started out Coldplay's Clocks behind the piano, but then jumped up onto the piano. He was a madman performing the song, so different from Magni's version. Then he runs across the stage to slide across the piano just in time to play again. After that, he crawled across the paino. All in all it too was an awesome performance! Dave liked that he was willing to rock on top of a piano. Jason doesn't think that Ryan can manage to perform without the piano, as that seems to be his forte. Gilby liked it however, saying every week Ryan does something different.
Storm Large was worried about her fan pick, Bring Me to Life by Evanescence, as she knows the melody but not the lyrics. She got Toby Rand to help out with the background vocals a bit. Storm messed up the lyrics, but I thought her performance was better than both Zayra Alvarez and Jill Gioia's performances of the song earlier in the season. It was great, and really worked for her to do her weird thing. Dave was worried about her doing, as it wasn't her register but thought it was awesome. Gilby meanwhile didn't think that he would remember the performance. He did remember Jill's performance of it. Jason gave Storm points for effort however, saying she put a lot of effort into it.
Toby Rand said that he's the joker of the house. He put cake on Ryan's face, ran around naked, and got Dilana to run around naked. I was worried about Toby doing Rebel Yell by Billy Idol, as the comparisons to Lukas could have been brutal. He did really good though, getting a lot of audience participation going on, which should have impressed Supernova. He grabbed some girls at the end and pulled them up onstage to jump and dance around. Dave was worried for him too when he head about this song, but he loved the crowd interaction. Gilby liked that he helped Storm out and loved that he brought the audience up. Tommy told Toby to grab the girls and go back to his dressing room. Toby told them they'd better check some ID first. Brooke Burke told Toby that he already has groupies. Toby said he has the first step done.
Dilana was up last. She said that she realized it's okay to make mistakes. It's about how you get back that matters. She wants people to know they didn't do the wrong thing voting for her. Her performance of Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham was bound to be more intense than Jill's earlier in the season. She started out playing guitar, then put the guitar down and stood on a small floor monitor. She draped her leg over a member of House Band (not sure which one). It was a great performance, one of her best, and a great comeback. Dave told her that out of two seasons of Rock Star that performance might be his favorite. He added that he can't think of a lead singer that hasn't said some stupid things to the press. Tommy told Dilana to say hello to the king of mistakes (Dilana said King and Queen). Tommy said they make thme and learn from them and hopefully don't do them again. Gilby said it was an emotional song delivered great. Jason, as usual, wanted to know how it felt to be up there again.
Storm, Ryan, and Lukas were in the bottom as the show came to a close. Brooke then gave a shout out to House Band, who definitely rocks.
As for who will be in the bottom, I don't know. I think Storm may have spelled doom for herself with her lyrics bobble. She's been in the bottom before and usual ends up having to stand up even if she isn't in the bottom. Between her and Magni, she might be the one to leave if Magni ends up in the bottom with her. Honestly I don't know who will end up in the bottom or who will go home. It's all so hard to judge at this point. Everyone is really stepping up their game, with only two weeks left before the final.
Nikki I am with you. The bald guys are HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really like Magni too. Still out on who I think should win, but like several have commented, I just don't think Ryan is the right person to from SN. He's good, but not SN material. I'm leaning toward Lukas, Dilana, and Toby for SN.
As I duck my head to hide with this next comment, I'll make it anyway...I think Magni might be too good for SN.
Tonight will be exciting!
If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!
Great show.
They all sounded awsome. My favorite three where Ryan, Magni, & Toby, they all added something more to the performance. I was especially surprised by Toby who seems to have gotten a boost by playing with Supernova.
The most obvious choice to go home would be Storm after the last few performances. But she hasn't been in the bottom three yet so I have a feeling she's going to blow them away when she gets to pick her own song.
She's going on and on about being back. About being stronger. It's like she's coming back from a traumatic accident. No, you were raked over the coals for badmouthing your fellow rockers. This isn't about you!!! Your friends were the ones who should be hurt, who should be down. Not you!!
What kind of person pisses on their friends when they're on top? Then you feel bad about it, melt down and then announce you've come back, stronger than ever? Puh-lease!! Give me a f***ing break!
So I watched it all back. All I can say is, I stand behind everything I said. Dilana was awesome! So was Lukas and Ryan. My choice for the bottom three... Toby, Storm and Magni. There. I said it. Unapologetic. That's just what I think! As for "what's with all the Dilana love?" Nothing. She got torn apart more than any other performer on the show for her off stage behavior. On stage, however, I have no problem with her. I don't pick apart her songwriting skills, or anyone's for that matter, because that is not part of my job. Tonight on "Mother, Mother" she seriously kicked *while rocking the Flying V, Zombie-like hair and banging her head on the mic... Right up my alley! Dirty, nasty and unafraid. I said it was the best in two seasons. Maybe THAT was a little enthusiastic, but I honestly felt that way at the time, and still do come to think of it. If you keep asking me why I liked it, I'll keep answering and then I'll get manure for writing about her more! HAHAHAHAHA... As for the voting issue. This is MY site. It is not an offshoot of MSN. You got a problem with voting? Take it there. Write to them. I host this, pay for it and update it myself. As I said before... I don't know what the problem is. I'll know tomorrow and maybe I'll have an update about it. Also, I am so tired of all the conspiracy talk, that I am just going to say... Yes. It's all a conspiracy. All your worst fears are true. We are trying to control you and the world at large. It's all a ploy to learn how to manipulate votes. Phase one: Florida re-count. Phase two: Rockstar: Supernova. And the final phase... The 2008 Presidential Elections. Mark Burnett, Tommy Lee and I have started a secret covert black ops campaign to rig 2008 and putting our choice of who wins Rockstar is all a part of our master plan. As I write this, there are secret meetings taking place at The Pentagon to determine the directives that will position our choice for Supernova's lead singer. Once in place, he or she will subliminally suggest to the public which Presidential candidate to vote for via the lyrical content of the upcoming Supernova album.

Start It Over Here
Here is a new thread so I can keep up with you guys! I HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH MSN!!! Don't know what to tell ya! I'll know more when I get to work tomorrow about the voting fiasco. In the meantime, rant and rave all you want here... I haven't seen the show back yet but it sounds as though it is much worse sounding on TV than it was in the studio. I'll confirm or deny in the morning.
About MSN's website, actually I figured out the issue *seriously*. I got the error too trying to use rockstar.msn.com. Then I tried rockstar.msn.com/default.aspx and it worked. That's because some MSN web guys must have updated the site and somehow changed the default page setting without noticing it *wierd*. It's such an easy fix but somehow it took them so long to get it. Anyhow, it came back.
I really think the shows have created 4 stars, Dilana, Magni, Toby and Lukas. I am having a hard time to choose the top 3.
Didn't cross my mind, but Will's idea of keeping all 6 this week and eliminate 2 next week is a good idea. You know, everyone stepped up big time. Why not give the bottom few another chance? Then next week, look back at the previous few week's performances to eliminate 2 of them. I'm all for this idea.
I'll be crushed if Magni is at the bottom 3, that's all I have to say to Dave's prediction.
We've had some Who, had some Nirvana (why?), we've even had some Billy Idol. The only guy who's had the stones take a song that defines what a great rock and roll song is, and tear it up in its performance, is Magni. Last week he did one of the greatest pure rock songs around. Can we please hear some more Jimi? As for Dilana "performing" a Who classic, am I the only guy outside of Pete and Roger that thought why did we give permission to do our stuff? Enough Nirvana, more Who, maybe another Stones rip, and by the grace of God Magni will end up in the final 2 so he can do All Along the Watchtower (which IS the greatest song of all time, regardless of genre, Thanks Dylan)
Lukas, a good performance, I just don't like him. I don't "get" the major swooning appeal of him either. Perhaps I am showing my age? Although cheers to his Mick Jagger-esque dance on the stage.
Was I the only one who noticed a few flubbed words in the beginning of Magni's song?? I love Live, and totally forgive Magni for this because I like Nicole and Shellybean find him absolutely swoon worthy!!!! He was awsome aside from the minor flub. He has a quiet intensity, he comands the stage without having to dance, slide across pianos etc.. IMO
Pianoman is seeming a bit scripted these days. And am I the only person who doesn't like Coldplay??? He doesn't fit with SN, but I could see him doing a solo thing though. Just not my cup of tea.
Storm's performance I thought was awsome. I give her credit for singing that song when she has a lower register, and having the backup made the performance feel more authenticated.
Toby is adorable, he has those pinchable cheeks! He really has stepped up his game these last few weeks. I couldn't help but laugh at the girls on the stage. Of course had that been me I probably would have acted the same.
Dilana, the kick in the air while singing and playing guitar brought me back to the 80's and Nancy Wilson of Heart. So I was a bit thrown the whole performance.
That was a good song for her, though, and a MUCH better version of it than Jill's!
The song selection is so narrow, I agree. And I tire of hearing the same songs over and over, many of which I never cared for when they were relevant, ie. Nirvana, STP, Tracy Bonham etc.
But it is interesting to see how different artists will treat the same material I have to admit.
And regardless of the voting trouble, Storm is gone tonight. I think she's an amazing performer and she comes off as a great person as well. I wish her the best but it's clear to me the band is not feeling her.
Maybe I missed something but what Dilana said wasn't all that bad and probably true. If she were a guy no one would give a manure. Then the other singers fake indigination.... common on this is a competition. No one talked trash like the singer who won last year and Dave never said a word.
Bottom line Dilana is the only one worth watching, some of the others are truly embarrassing and I actually change the channel during part of their acts (Storm, Ryan).
They put Dilana on last so the tv audience will watch the entire show. The producers figured out that many people change channels after she is done, so the try to put her on as late in the show as possible.
I rewound and watch the performances again.
Lukas/skunk boy- where was the middle verse? He sang the same verse twice? Did good but....did he not want to sing he shaved his head and was horny?
Magni-great job
Ryan-I liked it even less the second time, just to much.
Storm-Maybe having Toby sing behind you wasn't a good idea, well at least I kept watching to see what he was up to? I did like that you looked for him after the song to share in the lime light, but he was heading back to his seat.
Toby-Liked it more the second time I watched...he really got those girls in a frenzy!
Dilana-I am going to stand by my impression from show one, CREEPY, ICK. I don't care how much they want to brush off what she said and did. It still hurts her in the standings, I hope.
Bottom three: Storm, Dilana, Ryan ( not that I'm right, just hoping!) Magni or Toby for the win!
Curlio, great re-cap, as usual but maybe a little better even than usual.
I agree with your analysis pretty much. I thought they were all good. Dave was a tiny harsh with Stormy and Ryan. Stormy is the concensus to go home but, maybe Ryan. They seem abnormally harsh to Storm, there must be something they don't like about her or that her record is coming out or something.
All and all one of the best shows for sure. Nikki, must be out of Grape soda, or pork rinds, you know how she gets.
Nothing is good one moment and a bloody bleeding heart the next, what you gonna' do, she's our "Drama Queen"! And all girl along with the bstalker, I may have to turn the garden hose on them.
I hope stormy isn't sent home. If she isn't I think Ryan, probably more behind the scenes stuff. I can't wait for the show tonite, I hope we get some robust expressions of musical love. Will
A surprisingly good show last night. So far I had not really gotten into this season much as I did last season, but the talent is really starting to show, finally.
Lukas - He's getting better; I think he has real possibilities, but he's not there yet. IMO he will be in the top 3.
Magni - OUTSTANDING. He could front Supernova, but I'm not sure they will agree. Another top 3 member. I would buy his album (along with Josh's - I miss him!).
Ryan - Um... chill just a little, Ryan. That was a little too frantic, the first note was AWFUL. I kept waiting for him to fall down. I can't see him fronting Supernova.
Storm - NICE. I was listening to the original version of that song yesterday (it is one of my favorites), and Storm did it surprisingly well. Adding Toby was a very nice touch, and I thought he did well at not overshadowing Storm (the original version didn't have the rapper bit; that's the movie version). I *do* remember Jill's version - it was AWFUL. She should've been kicked off on that performance alone.
Toby - He's growing on me. I still don't think he can sing very well, but I can definitely see him in this band. I think Toby will win, and I think he will deserve it.
Dilana - Yikes. Didn't much like last night's performance. Before she started being such a b**** I thought she was quite talented. I still think she's talented, but her attitude sucks and I don't think the guys are going to want her around if she cracks under pressure like that.
My bottom three: Ryan, Dilana, Lukas (for screwing up the end of the song). I would keep Lukas; the other two can go any time.
I'm all for not booting anyone off this week and doing a double next week - that would be cool.
c'mon people . Dilana waz gud . i know the mansion crap was very dramatic and strange comin from a person like dilana but she has the brains to atleast come back fast .
see ya
I can't believe how many "guests" voted so high on Lukas - as worst performance. That's way out in left field. The guy consistently has a great performance week after week - in fact he had the "wow" factor long before the others started catching on. The kid's got talent..he's got this in the bag.
OML, 3 out of the bottom 5? Top 3 tonight? Wow, I don't think I'm quite ready for this. I'm happy that Magni stayed, no question. But this is a surprise. Let's see what happen.
do the contestants not watch themselves? supernova is looking for someone to front them
not to embarass them. come on rockers get real and play nice. be ugly or immature on your own time
I am a huge fan of this show i have never missed a show...i personally think that Lukas will win... hes has the look and he isnt insane when hes offstage like dilana. I also like Toby hes adorable and i like the way he performs and always has alot of energy...but im still hooked on Lukas i believe that he has amazing potential and would fit in with the rest of the band. Hes isnt afraid to be different...i hope that he wins cause im a huge fan and i was so happy that dilana finally found herself singing in the bottom three that shows that her bitchyness inst accepted by her fans and that they have moved on to vote for other candidates.
I love Rockstar Supernova its the most awesome reality shoe ever put on t.v., its truly rock and roll and not to mention Tommy Lee is in the band!! But last tuesdays performance from Toby was insanely awesome. He has a really good shot at winning now. I see it coming down to him and Magni. Dilana was my favourite but she has kinda lost what she had in the beginning. I am sooooo glad Storm is gone noe though she had a great voice but not for this show.
