Rock Star: Supernova turns it over to the fans curlio
 2006-08-29 22:50:33
Television This week on Rock Star: Supernova, the song selection was turned over to the fans. Usually this spells doom, but it was an awesome show. If you missed the show tonight, I feel really bad for you. I also feel very bad for Supernova, who has to decide betwen six totally awesome performances who will go home tomorrow! On with the show and the recap.

We start out with a recap of last week's drama - Dilana's press problems, Dave's comments to her about it, and then a recap of what is covered in this week's webisode which was recapped wonderfully again this week by momROCKS. The recap basically went over Dilana's pity-party, and the whole glass-throwing thing. Back to the show where Dave Navarro wanted to put everything to rest once and for all. He asked Magni how his head was, Magni said he's cut himself worse shaving. Dave asked Dilana about tonight's performance. Dilana said she wants to rock the place. No one is perfect, and she fell hard. Now she wants to come back stronger than ever. She added that she loves her friends and won't do anything to hurt them again.

Then we got a recap of song selection, which was also covered in the webisode recap. This week was fan selection week, and all of the selections were the "wild cards" which were songs the rockers heard others do this season but did not do themselves.

First up was Lukas Rossi. Before each performance they played a little clip of comments from each rocker. Lukas talked about how honored he is to be here, as he's just a hard working musician working hard at what he wants to do. He added that he likes basketball and beer. He's just like everyone else, just wearing more makeup. He performed Lithium by Nirvana, as done earlier in the season by Dilana. He started out really slow and soft, then rocked it. It was an awesome performance, with him mostly not singing from his throat. House band sounded awesome too. He made it really different from Dilana's performance in the first episode. Dave loved the rearranging of the song. Tommy Lee says he likes to let the music do the talking, and that song talked. He too loved the arrangement. Gilby Clarke said it was his best performance yet. Jason Newsted told Lukas that he sang right, opened up and let go.

Next up was Magni, who said that he knows if he is in the bottom three again he'll probably be gone. So he needs to get people from other countries to vote for him. He (jokingly I might add) says that he's better looking than Toby and then maligns Lukas and Ryan Star. He adds that he even learned the language of the American people. Ryan performed I Alone by Live earlier in the season in his usual brooding way, but Magni's version was different enough to stand out. He performed wonderfully and walked out through the audience to Supernova's platform to sing to the audience there and to Supernova. Dave wanted him to stay up there to tell him to his face he was awesome. Tommy wanted him to walk out all the way to the back. Magni said he thought about it, but said the little voice told him there's no lighting and he had to look good. Gilby said that although Magni is always solid, this week he gave that extra something Magni was looking for.

After the break, there was a plug for Supernova tour tickets, as they are on sale. If you buy tickets before midnight you may win a trip to the New Year's Eve show in Las Vegas.

Then it was time for Broodstar himself, Ryan Star. Ryan talked about how he was lost at the beginning, but is doing better every week now. He feels like he's gaining momentum. He started out Coldplay's Clocks behind the piano, but then jumped up onto the piano. He was a madman performing the song, so different from Magni's version. Then he runs across the stage to slide across the piano just in time to play again. After that, he crawled across the paino. All in all it too was an awesome performance! Dave liked that he was willing to rock on top of a piano. Jason doesn't think that Ryan can manage to perform without the piano, as that seems to be his forte. Gilby liked it however, saying every week Ryan does something different.

Storm Large was worried about her fan pick, Bring Me to Life by Evanescence, as she knows the melody but not the lyrics. She got Toby Rand to help out with the background vocals a bit. Storm messed up the lyrics, but I thought her performance was better than both Zayra Alvarez and Jill Gioia's performances of the song earlier in the season. It was great, and really worked for her to do her weird thing. Dave was worried about her doing, as it wasn't her register but thought it was awesome. Gilby meanwhile didn't think that he would remember the performance. He did remember Jill's performance of it. Jason gave Storm points for effort however, saying she put a lot of effort into it.

Toby Rand said that he's the joker of the house. He put cake on Ryan's face, ran around naked, and got Dilana to run around naked. I was worried about Toby doing Rebel Yell by Billy Idol, as the comparisons to Lukas could have been brutal. He did really good though, getting a lot of audience participation going on, which should have impressed Supernova. He grabbed some girls at the end and pulled them up onstage to jump and dance around. Dave was worried for him too when he head about this song, but he loved the crowd interaction. Gilby liked that he helped Storm out and loved that he brought the audience up. Tommy told Toby to grab the girls and go back to his dressing room. Toby told them they'd better check some ID first. Brooke Burke told Toby that he already has groupies. Toby said he has the first step done.

Dilana was up last. She said that she realized it's okay to make mistakes. It's about how you get back that matters. She wants people to know they didn't do the wrong thing voting for her. Her performance of Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham was bound to be more intense than Jill's earlier in the season. She started out playing guitar, then put the guitar down and stood on a small floor monitor. She draped her leg over a member of House Band (not sure which one). It was a great performance, one of her best, and a great comeback. Dave told her that out of two seasons of Rock Star that performance might be his favorite. He added that he can't think of a lead singer that hasn't said some stupid things to the press. Tommy told Dilana to say hello to the king of mistakes (Dilana said King and Queen). Tommy said they make thme and learn from them and hopefully don't do them again. Gilby said it was an emotional song delivered great. Jason, as usual, wanted to know how it felt to be up there again.

Storm, Ryan, and Lukas were in the bottom as the show came to a close. Brooke then gave a shout out to House Band, who definitely rocks.

As for who will be in the bottom, I don't know. I think Storm may have spelled doom for herself with her lyrics bobble. She's been in the bottom before and usual ends up having to stand up even if she isn't in the bottom. Between her and Magni, she might be the one to leave if Magni ends up in the bottom with her. Honestly I don't know who will end up in the bottom or who will go home. It's all so hard to judge at this point. Everyone is really stepping up their game, with only two weeks left before the final.

I thought it was one of the best shows they've had this season.

I haven't been a fan of Lukas much this year, but I really liked his performance. Especially when he avoided the throaty, gravely lyrics. It sounds like he has a pretty decent voice buried under that gravel.

I wasn't quite that sold on Dilana's performance. Or rather her vocals. The performance itself was excellent. Vocally I just didn't quite get it for the first third or half othe song. Then she seemed to pick it up. Maybe she has trouble singing and playing guitar at the same time. I know I do. (Nevermind I can't sing well as is without a guitar).

All of the other performances were solid. I really dug Magni (loved the clip with him joking that Americans should vote for him because he's bothered to learn the language) and Ryan, though I'd like to see Ryan dial back the instensity a little. It's almost as he feels the need to scream at times just to be sure he's different from the original version and for no other reason. But I thought it was a great take on what is one of my favorite Coldplay songs.

Storm I liked a lot. Oddly, while Gilby said he still remembers Jill's version. I don't at all. But at the same time, her performance did seem to stand out a little less than the others. I didn't notice the lyric bobble, but it's not a song I'm familiar with.

Toby gets props for audience participation. I'll dock him a point or two for copying the Billy Idol fist pump. :)

It's gonna be a tough call for tomorrow. I could see any combination of singers in the bottom three. The only one I'll predict is Storm. I think the band's comments, even when they praised her, seemed less enthusiastic than for the other rockers, and I think the voters pick up on that sometimes.

I'll add that I tried to vote right after the show but could not as I kept getting errors. I managed to get a few votes for magni in though (trying to keep him out of the bottom! VOTE FOR MAGNI!). Remind me to rant at some point that the internet is built for those darn high speed users and few websites consider those unlucky *s stuck on dialup.

I'm almost afraid of the Aussie reaction to Toby. They are massively patriotic there and this week Toby truly deserves the praise. If even I thought the Aussie Ken doll was awesome - that's gotta be scary!

I disagree with mirrorball, though I do envy you. I, unforutnately, do remember Jill's version. I'm still not sure what SN saw in Pamela-lite, but then again I do lack what is probably a required anatomical part in order to appreciate someone like Jill.

Mate! Tonight's show is freaking awesome, best ever. I recorded the show and will watch the performances again before I vote.

Many thanks to Curlio for this site and the recap. U know what, I also need to thank Dilana for her action last week. She directly ignited the fire hidden within every other contenders, so thanks very much Dilana for the great show. :)

OMG, after watching the show, I pretty much had a sensory overload. Everyone was great, tonight my favorite is Magni's, followed by Storm and Dilana. Lukas did very-very well, personally I didn't quite like the last 1/4 of his Lithium. IMO, he didn't finish the song strong, but he did superbly well 3/4 into the song.

Dilana on the other hand, get me involved in her performance the 2nd half of her performance and rocked hard in the end, yeah!! She's backkkekkk!!

Magni, OMG, no question that was his best vocal. Man, his past few performances starting from Creep were outstanding, Creep and tonight's was giving me chills.

Surprisingly, I absolutely digged Storm's performance. Normally I agree with what Dave and SN's comments, but I don't quite this time. I thought she sang very-very well, and that was my favorite. If I have to vote based on tonight's performance, she got mine. But if I have to choose who should go, it's Ryan then Storm. I don't know whether it's possible that SN has already made up their mind to kick Storm out tomorow if she's in the bottom three. Unfortunately I sure many others probably agree with that sentiment, I can too.

Ryan, I agree 100% with Jason's comment. Ryan likes the piano kinda like Elton John. These past few weeks, I came to the conclusion that he's not for SN. His style does not go well with SN, he's more suitable to be a soloist, not a rock band material. IMO, he's the worst match for SN.

Toby... man, you gotta give him credit for his past 2 weeks' performance. He is a great stage performer, knows how to play with the crowd. Dude, he even has his own EVS groupie... ha-ha.. nah, he's definitely not whatever. Singing.... B+.

Well, I'll rewatch the show before I vote. Tonight's show is ........ freaking awesome!! (that's the best I can come up with :)

What a great, great show. I enjoyed all of the performances although Lukas and Storm were my least favorite. I'm liking Lukas as a person more and more, and likewise Storm, but just don't see them with the band. I may be in the minority here but I liked Dilana's Lithium cover better.

I thought Magni did an awesome job on I Alone. Ryan is my favorite, even though I recognize that he is totally wrong for Super Nova. I like his differentness (don't think that's a real word. Oh, well) and his intensity, but he seemed a little too frantic in his performance tonight. Maybe he just needed a bigger stage.

Toby and Dilana, I thought, gave the most classic "rock" performances with the girls on the stage with Toby and the headbanging with Dilana. Toby has done the fist pumping before so I don't think he was overtly copying Billy Idol there.

I never thought much of Toby before I saw him with the band last week, but between that performance and this one I'm starting to see him with the band as a real possibility. Plus I love his sense of humor.

I still think they'll choose Dilana, though. Doesn't matter to me, I probably won't get their cd anyway. I'm thinking I'll pick up one of Ryan's though.

I want to say that although I am not a rock fan, I am captivated by a couple of the performers. I feel that Magni is such a powerful singer and if he is not chosen for the band, he will go far! Magni, you have an amazing presence and such a calm about with the way you deliver yourself to an audience, a confidence that cannot be forced, but rather felt - truly amazing - thank you for sharing your gift with others. Dilana - I do see you with the band - you too are a powerful performer. You would provide a wonderful stage balance to the band. A front runner that would make people take notice and watch, for you provide for the band what other band s do not - DIVERSITY. I think that is what Supernova should utlimately be - a conglomeration of ultimate talents coming together to be one while being a diversified group of performers, put together as one, creating a legend and history unlike fans have ever known. Like I previously said, I am not a rock fan, however, I would pay to see Supernova, if Dilana was the lead singer. I would also pay to see Magni if he where chosen, or if he goes off on his own. By the way is there any way I can pay to get a download or recording of Magni's version of Dolphons cry by Live?? The most amazing performance I have heard in a long time. To watch a performer and hear them to where it gave me goose bumps from feeling their performance in my own living room though my tv, is something I do not have the right words to describe, thank you for that.

Let me say, I realized there's something wrong with me. Take Lukas' performance for instance, I agree that was his best so far. I've watched it over 5 times now, and I am still disappointed that he didn't finish the song strong at the end. It's my believe that you build the song up to a climatic finish. His preped it up so well, you know, I was so ready to jump up and shout for what looked like a special performance.. but the climatic finish was not there. So I am very bumped out, eventhough I agree it was his best... I just can't get over the weak ending. The first 3/4 of his Lithium was so good, I thought it was probably as good or even better than Dilana's, just lacked the finish.. sigh. I'll stop repeating myself again.

Initially, I would have voted for Magni, Storm and Dilana. After watching/listening to them over-and-over again, my vote goes to Magni, Storm and Toby. Especially Storm's, I gotta say, that gotta be her best and I truly loved it. Even tried just listening to it, to me that was recording level material. It's my belief that it's super difficult to sing very well live, and I think she did 2nd best after Magni. Thus she got my vote.

As for Dilana, I think Dave's comment about the best ever over 2 seasons influenced my initial judgement. My favorite Dilana's performances is in the following order:
1) Zombie 2) Lithium 3) Won't Get Fooled Again 4) Time after Time 5) Ring of Fire 6) Mother Mother... so it's kinda difficult to cast a vote. It's probably unfair since she was better than many but I don't think it was her best. That makes me think that Dave wants to save Dilana, but I doubt she will be bottom 3.

Toby, wow, it's so interesting what a little confidence booster can do to an artist. After last week's performance with SN, Toby's confidence just oozed out right in front of you. Keep up the confidence and spontaneity Toby!

Lastly, I also want to add that fans have picked the absolute right songs for their favorite singer(s). Eventhough I don't think Ryan is a good fit for SN, I don't think it's my bias that makes me think that his performance was at the bottom yesterday. Alright good night and please vote for Magni! :)

my old man and I find our selfs watching this amazing show every week. The quality of artists that you all are is Right on! We are two people that listen to 97.1 in MN, and oddly we love your show. The female hormone 's should have gone home along time ago, the glass issue was dusted under the table. Not very ethical or humain. Each of the men have been great to go with the crowd and the beat. Ryan and the Piano rocks! Magni shines on solid! We did buy the dvd put out this year from last because we have had some of the beat of the music grow on us. Thank you for your stellar show every week.

Lukas - He totally kicka$$!!!!!!!!!!!!.......he was like Mick Jagger out there with his 'moves' on stage…….and that smile:)…..those eyes…………oh baby, baby……..bedroom eyes! {{'I'm just like you I was flipping wings at Hooters'}} Gotta love it:)

Magni - I did REALLY like him this week……he's finally growing on me!!

Ryan - Kind of showy……not sure I 'believe' the piano slide and crawl……seems like an act...he's good but he's not right for SN

Storm -Toby did kind of steal her thunder……She did alright but she's not the girl for SN either……..
she should front her own band.

Toby - Loved that look into the camera at the end…….he was totally taking a lesson from Lukas on that one:)………..some more of those bedroom eyes………he's growing on me too!!!

Dilana - I thought the lyrics were totally appropriate for her…….the right time and place……she did great and definitely redeemed herself after all the DRAMA!

I think it's gonna be a double elimination………Storm and Ryan

Uh, did you all watch the same episode as me? I thought that was one of the WORST episodes this season. It's all recycled songs! I swear, can't they get anything else than Nirvana and Coldplay? You know Mark Burnett is raking in the millions; fork over a little cash for more songs so we don't have to have repeat night every season. Sheesh!

The energy level was high last night, so I guess that's worth something.

My opinion of the rockers:

Lukas: I have to give him credit for not doing the 900th Kurt Cobain impersonation on this show, but I still didn't find it all that great. Too much scream? Perhaps. Too much hobbit skipping about the stage? Definately. However, I was tickled to learn that he used to work at Hooters. I'm imagining him as the creepy, greasy dishwasher who stares at all the girls through the back door while they're outside on their smoke breaks and giggles softly to himself (yeah, we had one of those when I worked in a restaurant).

Magni: *swoon* I love Magni. He's somehow supercool without trying too hard. Official bald rocker guy standings (IN MY HEART):
1. Magni
2. That guy from Live
3. Chris Daughtry
*sigh* Sorry to go all fangirl on you guys, but he's just so darn cute. I want to run off to Iceland with him and start a family of half-fairy love-children.

Ryan: That was a badddddddddddddddd note he started on. Painful. I was afraid he was never going to catch the key. I almost felt embarassed for him, but then he caught the tune and proceeded to mime taking a poop on top of the piano, so I figured he was kind of beyond embarassment. Who's he trying to be with all that crazy? Methinks he misses Queen Z.

Storm: While I was happy to see ol' crazy eye Storm back, I think she missed the point on this song. The song is about emptiness, vulnerabilty, and she struts around the stage, pumping her fists, going all Amazon on us. don't get me wrong, I love a strong woman, but this song calls for a softness and a weakness that ol' crazy eye Large doesn't have. I think I made the same critique of Jill when she sang, or I'm sinking into old age induced senility and think everything I say is a repeat of something else.

Crocodile Randee: He should have sang the Evanescence song. he was way more interesting as Storm's back up than he was on his own. When he pulled the underage blondes onto the stage, I realized that he is simply a big throbbing piece of manmeat, ruled by his boxer shorts and therefore he'll fit in perfectly with this band. Toby for the Win ;)

Dilana: After seeing all of her pre-Rockstar poptart songs, I really can't get into any of her performances anymore. They all seem artificial and overly dramatic to me-----this coming from a Zayra lover and worshipper at her alter of the hyper-dramatic. Voice was the same ol' Dilana stone crusher as every week and I started getting mad with the tongue bath Dave Navarro was giving her. "Best performance ever"? A bit much, Dave. I can understand wanting to build up her confidence so she doesn't slit her wrists back at the mansion, but what is this? Rockstar: Oprah?

Sidenote: I think it's pretty tacky for Brooke Burke to be showing so much boobage when she's preggers. Something about the sanctity of motherhood . . . yada yada yada

Performances ranked from best to worst:

1. Magni (only one I was truly impressed with)
2. Lukas (giving bonus points for originality)
3. Toby (bland and horney, but not terrible)
4. Dilana (better than Breakfast in Central Park, at least)
5. Storm (wrong register, wrong emotion, wrong wrong wrong)
6. Ryan (that was an American Idol caliber bad note and humping the piano reminded me strangely of Kellie Pickler)

Peace Y'all!

I watched most of this show while flipping to Celebrity Duets on Fox. Celebrity Duets used the American Idol stage and house band. To compare the two house bands is like trying to compare Keith Richards and a baby with a Fisher Price guitar; the Supernova house band definitely rules! As for the performers, I still think that Dilana is the best overall. She has the most unique voice and look and her performance gave me chills last night. As for the others, minus Storm, they could be dropped into some anonymous rock/punk band and would blend in with everyone else. Not to say they are not talented, but they are old hats who bring nothing new to the table.

Waiting for the real show to start...

All over that show last night. All-in-all an amazing display...shows why this show is so much better than all the "other" reality singing shows.

Lukkas -- he is great but sometimes vocally challenged - not because he doesn't have the talent, but because he is more interested in the spectacle than the singing it seems – a true RockStar

Magni – he is vocally and performance wise probably the best but his performance just doesn’t give it enough…I want him to jump around the stage when hard parts hit and not just bend down and look over his eyebrows.

Ryan – his performance was awesome…problem is his performance seems too planned out … “now I am going to get up on the piano and then I will jump off” he is thinking about it too much!

Storm – despite the comments that was really cool… I agree Toby stole a bit of it, but whatever. She is not right for the band…

Toby – I can’t get enough of his performance with Supernova last week … I have been listening to it over and over and I love it. He sounds perfect for the band…as far as this week. It might have been his week!

Dilana – I still can’t see her with the guys of the band…she doesn’t fit. This was my favourite performance of her though – it work so well with her intensity and her voice.

They were all spectacular, but I say

Storm
Magni
Lukkas or Ryan

as the bottom 3 --- send two home!

hmmmm......so how do you really feel???

you do know these were FAN CHOICES right?
I agree that the same songs have been done over and over but I guess the fans like that so they can compare them apples to apples instead of apples to oranges....I mean how do you compare a Nirvana song to a Gloria Gaynor song.....they aren't in the same category.

Note to self: steer clear of curlio the day after Lukas is named the winner. Why? Because the negativity bomb's gonna drop around here.

I have been hooked by this show worse than perhaps any before in my 30+ years of watching tube and it's all because truthfully, there is some 5 star talent up on that stage. Magni, Dilana, Toby, Lukas. I feel like, and I hope I'm right, that we're watching not the birth of one star but of several.

But I also am often surprised by the comments on this site when, after another completely original performance by Lukas, he gets next-to-no love. Can't anyone see that out of everyone on that show, he doesn't just up and pay karaoke homage, he makes songs his own. Sometimes the house band doesn't even get where he wants to take songs, eg. when Lukas insists on layering in that grungy loop in his rendition of "Let's Spend the Night Together", or last night when he chose to mix in prominent piano parts and then shut down the instrumentation completely before exploding into the chorus. He's more than just a singer/performer. He gets it musically. And the SN guys see it and know it.

I think he's such a runaway winner that the band kind of treats him in a low key way (not rewarding him with encores or chances to front them on SN tracks) in order to build drama for the show.

I'm not taking a darn thing away from the likes of Magni, Toby or Dilana, whose talents are totally undeniable. But I hope more of you can open your mind to what Lukas is doing. He's not just giving his all on a standard arrangement of a well-known song (like Magni and Toby did last night), he's courageously changing the song and pulling it off time and again.

Anyways, peace and love to you all!

Don't mind me, I'm just a guest.

Curlio, and peeps, I have a good high speed connection and I had a really hard time voting. I even left the site to re-enter and vote, and couldn't even get on to the site for an hour. I after that I got a error messaage say the MSN entertainment was having service problems, it did finally get a few votes in form my storm. I say the keep everyone and vote off two next week. This was a big snafu, and a fair vote cannot be had.

Will -oops-
