Rock Star: Supernova has surprising bottom three curlio
 2006-08-30 21:44:47
Television Tonight's Rock Star: Supernova put a few suprising people into the bottom three. Two of the three were not in the bottom three before. The person eliminated was no surprise however. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We have a nice long recap to go through before we get to that!

Brooke Burke announced that the voting this week had doubled from last week. It was also the most votes they had gotten in two seasons of Rock Star. Then we were off to the recap of last night, including Dilana's drama. Back at the mansion after the show everyone toasted to a kick *show. Magni said everyone was at their best, but half will be in the bottom three. Storm hasn't been in the bottom three, but did have to stand up several times. She says you never know what will happen, but Ryan is convinced he or Magni will go home. Storm tries to tell him that he doesn't know what will happen. Lukas said that he hopes he will take it like a man if he's in the bottom three.

Back to the show for the interview section. Dave Navarro congratulated the rockers for the best show they have probably had to date. Talking to Storm Large, Dave tells her that she has stood several times but not had to sing. Yet Storm always seems to want to sing. Storm says that any chance to rock for these guys and with the band is good for her. Dave liked that answer, but wondered what it would feel like to be in the bottom three. Storm said it would be good to get the chance to kick the snot out of something again.

Dave talked to Dilana about friends, asking if they are all friends now. He wonders if it will be hard to say goodbye to anyone. Dilana says it will be extremely hard, like losing a limb. She says she will cry today. They teased her because she didn't really stand up at first when she started talking, then when she did stand it still didn't look like she was standing. Last up was a conversation with Magni about the In Touch photo shoot, as Magni says he hated it. Dave asks him if he realized that's a part of the gig. Magni says he realized it after sitting for four hours. Dave interrupted with something about locations, and Magni teased him telling him not to interrupt him. Magni says he totally had to do that. Dave tells him it's his show sucka. Dave adds that the whole season he's been saying that he has nothing to do with the voting and no influence over Supernova. Dave says he lied.

Jason Newsted said that they have a new Supernova song to sing tonight. I think the title was "It's On" - though I'm not overly sure. Lukas Rossi gets the chance to sing with the band, though I was shocked that we didn't get video of everyone singing it. I wasn't overly fond of the song. Lukas mumbled through a lot of it. He didn't seem to be wearing as much make-up this time either I might add.

Then we had the revelation of who won the Windows Live Spaces contest (Rob Carlos of Seattle). Gilby Clarke announced that the remaining five rockers after tonight would go off to a songwriting clinic with Gilby, where they would get to write a new Supernova song.

This week's encore went to Toby Rand, who once again performed Rebel Yell. This time he didn't pull the teenies up onstage with him, he went out to them. He first went to the rockers platform, then wandered out to the back of the audience. It was a good performance overall.

After the voting started, Ryan Star, Storm Large, and Lukas were in the bottom three. As voting went on, Toby and Dilana joined them in the bottom. Yes, that left Magni as the only person not standing. Dave wondered if Brooke told everyone with hair to stand up. He was surprised, as after last night's performances no one should be standing. Tommy Lee said there was one heck of a party in Iceland right now.

First into the bottom was Ryan, who decided to blow everyone's mind by performing a song by The Who - Baba O'Riley. He got a champagne bottle, brought out by Toby, and shook it up onto the audience. He ran around the stage like a madman convinced it was his last time up there. Gilby didn't look too impressed as Ryan climbed onto the monitors and then jumped off. It was a performance of pure adrenaline.

Next into the bottom three was Storm, who was happy to be in the bottom as she gets to rock again. She decided to perform Helter Skelter, calling it probably one of the first punk rock songs. Storm too performed like she was nuts, running out the the Supernova platform and flopping onto Tommy's lap. She walked back to the stage, then flopped into the audience.

Toby was told he was safe, leaving either Lukas or Dilana to be in the bottom. Dilana was next, leaving Tommy wondering what happened. Dilana said she screwed up and this was her redemption. She performed Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads. Overall it too was a good performance, but one performed like a madwoman.

On to judgement, where Gilby told Ryan that he has come the farthest so far. He isn't the same Ryan that started the competition and the performance tonight was one of the best audience receptions so far. Storm, with her first time in the bottom three, has given some solid performances but hasn't grown much. Dilana has earned so much credit with them so far. Tommy told Ryan that he's the next to go. Dave told Ryan that he's a big fan of him, that he has talent. He said he's the most evolved they have had on the show. Ryan was disappointed, but seemed to know it was coming. He told the band that with him as the lead singer they could have made 20 years of great music and he's sorry for that. He will return to solo music now.

Is it just me or were the performances lacking tonight. They had the performance factor going, but vocally it just didn't pop like last night did. It was good, but by comparison it falls flat. All three of the bottom three performed like they were manic, desperate to stay in the competition.

My two cents...

Glad Ryan "the trouble maker" is gone. What a wretched voice tonight. He needs to just sit behind the piano and let someone else "Star". I plugged my ears from the first note. Awful...awful...awful!!!

Storm survived tonight only thanks to Ryan.

Dilana...take heart. You are still the best. Don't let "stuff" effect your performance. I still wish you would reconsider teaming up with a fellow Rocker. I think Toby would be the best choice. He'd keep it all fun and lighthearted again. It would then be one big party with a lot of great music, singing and performances.

I was pleasantly surprised that Storm didn't get get booted....not that she's that good, but Ryan was in way over his head...he wasn't nearly as good as he thought he was...he had no stage presence whatsoever, seemed totally uncomfortable and screamed instead of sang.......plus his false humility was wearing thin.....good riddance 'dark horse'. Gotta be either Toby or Lukas winning it all.....Lukas has the best stage presence but Toby has the best voice......my money's on Lukas at this point but would be happy with either one.

Dilana should win SN. She has a unique voice and unique style. I am not one for piercings but she is really cool and I think she is a perfect fit for SN. Ryan will be a great soloist. Magni has attitude and doesn't fit. I believe that Toby and Dilana will be the last two standing and feel Dilana has already earned the Top Spot.

Sorry to see you go Ryan..you were good, but I personally think you will be better as a solo artist..you were even telling the band how they should play and what they should do! Toby is the best!! Ajme he is sooo hot and can actually sing!! Its very rare to get all the WHOLE package and that is Toby!!!

Toby has come from nowhere to be favorite I think. His last 3 performances(including with SN) have shown he is as good as anyone. What makes Toby a good choice is his respect he has from other singers and vica versa. I think he's the only guy SN would be totaly relaxed with media surrounding him and sudden fame if he won.
Dilana sounds too much the same with her growly voice...people will get sick of it quickly.
Ryan will be a solo artist
Storm given right songs to match her voice could be a
star
Magni...great singer and attitude....could be a star
Lukas...same comments as Dilana

I was hoping Dilana Scary chick was gone tonight. We will have to be subjected to her inferior song writing skills next week.
Ryan was never going to front the band so I guess he needed to go. But man you should have thanked SN for the exposure, to bite the hand that feeds you on your way out is not cool.
I agree the songs tonight were maniac including the SN song. The other SN songs were better than this one.
Curlio I think Ryan took that bottle to the stage...when he left the platform where they were all sitting he had something hidden in a jacket or something black in his right hand. Or maybe I missed the whole set up? I'll have to watch again (I always tape it incase someone calls) I think Toby was just looking for a drink or maybe agreed to get rid of the bottle?

I guess my proxy votes for Magni worked last night Curlio? We did it we kept him out of the bottom three!! I'm sure it was the extra votes I submitted in your name!nudge
Can't wait till Monday and the reality show to see what's going on!

Ha-ha-ha-ha... I love to read everyone else's responses. First of all, thanks again Curlio for the recap. Especially, I find your personal thoughts in the last paragraph to be great. I started with a laugh because personally I am finding this show better after tonight. I have so much in my mind to say, personally I think there were so many little things that I have grasped from tonight's show. Some I should probably keep to myself.. but if it sparks some discussion, that's good enough for me.

First of, Lukas. Well, I spoke too early yesterday. There's no doubt in my mind that was Lukas's best performance ever. In addition, that's also my favorite SN's new track by far. This is the first time I get to really hear Lukas SING instead of just "drag" lyrics (if that makes sense) in half of his song. Plus I got to hear his range clearly and get a good understanding of his control vocally. And I am very impressed with Lukas's vocal tonight. He didn't dodged higher notes, and attacked them everytime. Ha-ha.. 3/4 into the song, he had to bend down for a couple of seconds to gasp for air because his lung definitely needed that. I was disappointed with Lukas's finishing yesterday, tonight he corrected that and more. I compared both days' performances by Lukas and I am comfortable with my words.

Let's stick with Lukas for another observation I have. Ha-ha.. here's something that I should probably keep to myself. Prior to tonight, I was very curious how Lukas with SN would feel like (noticed I use 'feel' ;). As stated above, I think they sounded great together. Umm... I am sure this is just me, but does anybody else feel that Lukas looked like a baby playing with SN? Ha-ha.. I rewatched yesterday's Lithium and he blended in cohesively with the house band since those 2 guitarists are a lot younger. I even let that thought sit for a while, watch Lukas + SN again and still feels the same. I am a bit astonished because age difference has never crossed my mind before to be something to even pay attention for. Thoughts and flamings are welcomed. ;^)

Toby, rock solid again. I think this is the best encore performance this season because an encore is seldomly as fun and entertaining as the first one but Toby was able to accomplish that. Personally I like this key the best, it's very comfortable and 'right'. IMO, when Toby pushes his key higher than tonight's, he sounds slightly pitchy at times.. which is not a big deal. Keep up the great showmanship Toby!

Magni, I'm so happy for him. I have no idea how well he can campaign. Kidding aside, I've never seen him this happy before. Yeah, show us the fun side of yourself Magni. I love Magni's singing, very well deserved 1st place vote. No question SN wanted Magni to know that great performances do get votes. But I will still say, what Magni said about he could be next to go home if he ended up in the bottom 3 + super performance got supporters to really go online and voted. Do not know what else I can ask from him, come to think of it, if he can change his stage style a bit but not overdoing it will be refreshing. Just a thought.

Ryan, lots of supporters voiced their disappointment. I think SN did the right thing and it's best for both SN and Ryan himself. If you're Ryan's supporter, you know in your heart that he is best to go back to be a soloist playing his style of music that he could sound his best. SN is not for Ryan, and Ryan is not for SN. His last 2 performances were a bit over the top, stop trying to do too much. Sliding on the piano, using Champagne as props, spinnig the mic wildly, and climbing up on top of 2 stacked up speakers came across a bit too staged and strange. Slow it down and he will thrive as shown in previous performances. Best of luck to him.

Storm, I didn't like her delivery tonight. I realized that I like her presentation when she sings, not scream. IMO whenever she screams, like tonight, the song is ill-suited for her. Again, I absolutely dug her performance yesterday. Of the remaining 5, hate to say this but she trails the rest in quite a few areas. One criticism about tonight's sketch, try hard but don't try too hard. Look at Ryan, he brought Champagne. Should you bring cans of beer and start crushing those on your skull to upstage Ryan? Bring the right mindset and just be comfortable, all IMHO.

Dilana, yes, she messed up in the middle of the song which shows that she didn't think she would be in the bottom 3 tonight. Okay, I am over the whole drama thing and would like to see the Dilana of the first 2 months. That Dilana was confident, her voice carried the right balance of sexiness, playfulness, bitchyness, and intensity whenever she wanted to exude those characteristic. That Dilana conveyed her message through her great body language especially those eyes. And lots of that is lost momentarily. I am not sure she can bounce back to that peak form next week, but I will welcome it with open ears and eyes. One side note, when she said she will cry for the contestant that leaves tonight, I think she probably meant Storm.

One last thing to add, I also think that song selections need to be expanded. Don't know if CBS is just being cheap like others have eluded to, I think it will give all contestants better chances to show the band and audience their versatility and strength. Peace out, till next week!

I'm not surprised they let Ryan go. It is getting more and more evident that SN only wants to make vacant party rock, and that's fine, which means that Ryan was a little too brooding and serious for them. I also think the fact that Ryan is a perfectionist and seems to micromanage everything worked against him; These guys in SN have huge egos and probably wouldn't like anyone to tell them how to do anything, even as a suggestion. I'm thinking they want someone that will be more amiable; someone they can mold to what they want them to be. I think Ryan was evolving too fast on his own. Anyway, I was wrong with my earlier thoughts on who'd make top three; Now I'm thinking more along the lones of Toby, Dilana and Lukas.

ok............ so finally another surprise elimination !!
but i agree with the minority , YO ALL U GUYS AND GALS WHO LUV RYAN , HE WOULD NOT HAVE FIT INTO THE BAND. i'll tell u why
1. toooooooooooooooo intense and serious
2. plays with a piano ( i think supernova realised that the piano existed with this guy )
3. supernova didn't really like him to begin with . ONLY DAVE SEEMED TO LUV HIM.

THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT I DON'T LIKE RYAN. THAT GUY KICKS *!!!

Now next week will be douvle elimination week 'cause there are only two more weeks left. And now the top 3 will most definetely be -
dilana
lukas
toby

magni and storm will be bye bye !!!
Ryan i think everyone will miss u and will most definetely buy your cd and see ur shows !!! and Storm honey u gotta get the rythm goig or else u'll be the first to go. and one more thing , don;t be too desperate to be in the bottom 3 'cause that may be ur last performance.
MAGNI JUST BEAT IT AND GET UR BALD HEAD BACK TO ICELAND.

A quick general observation, I could be wrong...

Under 30, love Lukas.

Over 30, hate Lukas.

Most of us who own other music by members of Supernova are over 30.

Lukas ain't the man.

Tonights performances were not up to par--that's for sure. I think it is as you mentioned: they are manic and desperate.

You didn't mention anything about the voting fiasco though. Many fans were unable to vote during the voting period due to techical issues. (check out the boards) That's why it is pretty unbelievable that there were twice the number of votes as the previous week. People are thinking that this would not be possible, and someone is screwing with the numbers.

Hmm Shenova you just might have hit the nail on the head there!!!

Ryan is gone, I can't say that I'm upset over it. I was never a fan of his even when everyone else liked his performances. I don't have to look at his pained expressions anymore when he sings. It's one thing to emote the feeling of the song. It's another to look like you have just had your family jewels bashed with a sledge hammer.

I'm glad I had a prior commitment last night and missed the performances from what you all say in your comments.

Thanks again for a stellar recap!

It really doesn't matter who fronts SN,if the winner has to sing the wretched sub-par puke they've subjected us to the last 3 weeks.SN's original stuff is horribly unbearable to listen to !! Storm Small should have exited several weeks ago,but obviously the producers want a stripper on the show and her leaving would've left poor Diplana' as the last gal at the mansion. As far as her striptease last night goes she was off time, out of sync, out of key and when you have to resort to going into the audience and sitting on Tommy's lap you know you're just a brownnosing kiss-ass ho.Hey,Storm-you and your mastabatory moves-take it all away !!-You suck.Magni??? a family man ? What the h*ll kind of family man goes to LA and leaves his wife and child at home in pursuit of a selfish rock dream that ain't gonna happen anyway ???? Many other ways to provide for your family iceman.Ill say one thing for INXS last season at least they had enough class to shake hands and embrace the folks they let go,more than i can say for these SN chumps ! Would've been pretty cool if ol' Ryan "Billy Joel" star flinged his mic over at SN last night.

Good morning everybody! A few comments on last night's show:

---ALL REPEAT SONGS AGAIN!!!!! I'm no math whiz, but a general estimate would be that they need about 150 songs to get through a season. Are you really telling me that Mark Burnett doesn't have the dough to clear 150 different songs? Plus, once you get permission to do one of an artist's songs, it's usually pretty easy to get the rest. Maybe it has to do with the houseband . . . they don't want to have to learn 150 songs but I doubt it. Enough with the repeats already! I'm seriously considering going over to Dave Navarro's blog and leaving a comment for him. Because we all know Dave has all the power--NOT!

----I totally agree with Doh and Shenova about Lukas and Supernova. When he was singing with them, I thought 'aw cute, they let Tommy Lee's son join them for a song'. I don't know if it's Lukas' hobbit sized stature or his total 11th grade goth look, but he looks a tad ridiculous in front of these forty year old men.

-----Toby Rand, Toby Rand.
How do you manage to be so hawt and bland?
The manmeat from down under
Is all rumble no thunder
It would take a whole case of Foster's beer
To get you even close to Billy Idol, dear

-----Magni! Hooray! Did anyone else notice him ducking out every now and then from the bleachers after he was safe? Maybe he had to potty or wanted to grab a diet coke, but it was kind of odd. I don't think we've seen any other rocker leaving during the show. Hmmm . . . this thought now officially open for consipiracy theories.

Also about Magni, I've decided he'll end up in third place. Why? Because he's getting the 'Elliot Yamin Nice Guy Edit'. And if reality television teaches us anything, it's that nice guys always finish third (unpleasant b!tch finishes second and bland, pretty much unobjectionable piece of furniture wins)

----Ryan was terrible last night. Any of you fan/guests whining about him being eliminated really need to check the video tape. Off key . . . his voice was abandoning him halfway through the long notes . . . his pacing was totally off. You know you've hit a new level of lame when your amp jumping causes Dave Navarro to roll his eyes and question your authenticity.

-----I can give Storm props on the attitude but not on the vocals. She too seemed out of breath, rushed, and not as powerful as normal. I was a wee bit embarassed for her when she yelled out into the crowd 'You all remember how to mosh?" I was thinking, oh no sweetie, please don't date yourself. We all already know you're the oldest one there.

-----Here's my paraphrase of Dilana announcing her song selection last night:

Dave: So, what are you going to sing for us, Dilana?
Dilana: I chose a song called Psycho Killer because it's all about me and my problems. I would like to dedicate this to myself. I would like to sing it in front of a large banner of myself. Don't worry if I mess up the words, I'm just trying to figure out a way to work my name into the song. *smiles and bats eyes*
Dave: Great Dilana, let's do it!

Sheesh, the house band had to all crowd around the edges of the stage to make room for ego on that one. I hope David Byrne hunts her down and threads spaghetti through her facial piercing holes or something artistic and cruel like that.

I feel confident in making my prediction of the final five elimination list (notice I said prediction, not spoiler, unlike some disreputable websites called out on TV last night):

5. Storm
4. Toby
3. Magni
2. Lukas
1. Dilana

Funny, this is probably the same list I would have made a week or two ago. Nothing really seems to be changing in the rankings.

I'm off to vote Zayra for the encore! Peace, love and chicken grease!
