Rock Star: Supernova has surprising bottom three curlio
 2006-08-30 21:44:47
Television Tonight's Rock Star: Supernova put a few suprising people into the bottom three. Two of the three were not in the bottom three before. The person eliminated was no surprise however. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. We have a nice long recap to go through before we get to that!

Brooke Burke announced that the voting this week had doubled from last week. It was also the most votes they had gotten in two seasons of Rock Star. Then we were off to the recap of last night, including Dilana's drama. Back at the mansion after the show everyone toasted to a kick *show. Magni said everyone was at their best, but half will be in the bottom three. Storm hasn't been in the bottom three, but did have to stand up several times. She says you never know what will happen, but Ryan is convinced he or Magni will go home. Storm tries to tell him that he doesn't know what will happen. Lukas said that he hopes he will take it like a man if he's in the bottom three.

Back to the show for the interview section. Dave Navarro congratulated the rockers for the best show they have probably had to date. Talking to Storm Large, Dave tells her that she has stood several times but not had to sing. Yet Storm always seems to want to sing. Storm says that any chance to rock for these guys and with the band is good for her. Dave liked that answer, but wondered what it would feel like to be in the bottom three. Storm said it would be good to get the chance to kick the snot out of something again.

Dave talked to Dilana about friends, asking if they are all friends now. He wonders if it will be hard to say goodbye to anyone. Dilana says it will be extremely hard, like losing a limb. She says she will cry today. They teased her because she didn't really stand up at first when she started talking, then when she did stand it still didn't look like she was standing. Last up was a conversation with Magni about the In Touch photo shoot, as Magni says he hated it. Dave asks him if he realized that's a part of the gig. Magni says he realized it after sitting for four hours. Dave interrupted with something about locations, and Magni teased him telling him not to interrupt him. Magni says he totally had to do that. Dave tells him it's his show sucka. Dave adds that the whole season he's been saying that he has nothing to do with the voting and no influence over Supernova. Dave says he lied.

Jason Newsted said that they have a new Supernova song to sing tonight. I think the title was "It's On" - though I'm not overly sure. Lukas Rossi gets the chance to sing with the band, though I was shocked that we didn't get video of everyone singing it. I wasn't overly fond of the song. Lukas mumbled through a lot of it. He didn't seem to be wearing as much make-up this time either I might add.

Then we had the revelation of who won the Windows Live Spaces contest (Rob Carlos of Seattle). Gilby Clarke announced that the remaining five rockers after tonight would go off to a songwriting clinic with Gilby, where they would get to write a new Supernova song.

This week's encore went to Toby Rand, who once again performed Rebel Yell. This time he didn't pull the teenies up onstage with him, he went out to them. He first went to the rockers platform, then wandered out to the back of the audience. It was a good performance overall.

After the voting started, Ryan Star, Storm Large, and Lukas were in the bottom three. As voting went on, Toby and Dilana joined them in the bottom. Yes, that left Magni as the only person not standing. Dave wondered if Brooke told everyone with hair to stand up. He was surprised, as after last night's performances no one should be standing. Tommy Lee said there was one heck of a party in Iceland right now.

First into the bottom was Ryan, who decided to blow everyone's mind by performing a song by The Who - Baba O'Riley. He got a champagne bottle, brought out by Toby, and shook it up onto the audience. He ran around the stage like a madman convinced it was his last time up there. Gilby didn't look too impressed as Ryan climbed onto the monitors and then jumped off. It was a performance of pure adrenaline.

Next into the bottom three was Storm, who was happy to be in the bottom as she gets to rock again. She decided to perform Helter Skelter, calling it probably one of the first punk rock songs. Storm too performed like she was nuts, running out the the Supernova platform and flopping onto Tommy's lap. She walked back to the stage, then flopped into the audience.

Toby was told he was safe, leaving either Lukas or Dilana to be in the bottom. Dilana was next, leaving Tommy wondering what happened. Dilana said she screwed up and this was her redemption. She performed Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads. Overall it too was a good performance, but one performed like a madwoman.

On to judgement, where Gilby told Ryan that he has come the farthest so far. He isn't the same Ryan that started the competition and the performance tonight was one of the best audience receptions so far. Storm, with her first time in the bottom three, has given some solid performances but hasn't grown much. Dilana has earned so much credit with them so far. Tommy told Ryan that he's the next to go. Dave told Ryan that he's a big fan of him, that he has talent. He said he's the most evolved they have had on the show. Ryan was disappointed, but seemed to know it was coming. He told the band that with him as the lead singer they could have made 20 years of great music and he's sorry for that. He will return to solo music now.

Is it just me or were the performances lacking tonight. They had the performance factor going, but vocally it just didn't pop like last night did. It was good, but by comparison it falls flat. All three of the bottom three performed like they were manic, desperate to stay in the competition.

All you Ryan supporters: what I wouldn't give to see your music collections. Let me guess: Billy Joel, Elton John, Tori Amos, Celine Dion, Neil Diamond, and show tunes show tunes show tunes.

The guy smacked of poseurism. Inauthentic. The reason for his so-called "growth" throughout the season is because he changed his act in an attempt to appeal to the band. Key word there is "act". Maybe Storm should have gone ahead of him, but who will care a year from now? Noone will remember in what order the losers left. The point is the true contenders are still around and they are Lukas, Magni, Toby and Dilana.

And people have to stop harping on Lukas' ununciation. Like, who cares? You want lyrics? Read the liner notes. Who could understand Kurt Cobain? Since when did it become a prerequisite for rock singers to sing clearly?? Ummmmm, never.

I thought tonights performances were crap.
Ryan looked stupid and wobbly climbing on the speakers (showed off his bum cleavage in the process !!!), he yelled throughout the song- what a try hard performance- definately not suited for SN- better off on his own he will be more successfull, so he thinks.

Storm's performance was not good either- Helter Skelter is not her style- she too tried to hard and shot herself in the foot.

Dilana- dont know why she bothered with this song- certainly not in her range and lost the meaning and impact in her performance- a real embarrassment.

I think Lukas will win - not that I like him, but crap sells and perhaps thats what SN is looking for. I hated his performance fronting SN I couldnt decifer the song, lots of throaty screaming and not a good tune anyway.

In terms of talent and compatabilty it really should be Dilana or Toby but as I said crap sell so Lukas has a bloody good chance.

Sylvie--I absolutely agree with you. Crap sells which means Lukas will probably end up winning--the gremlin needs to go!! I couldn't understand any of the lyrics that Lukas sang with Supernova-- and Josher--lyrics do matter to those of us who grew up with the guys in Supernova!! Maybe you're from the generation that likes the Kurt Cobain grunge so you should probably just find something else to watch because obviously Supernova is not your style. Their new songs sound like a combination of GNR and Motley Crue, not grunge (unless of course Lukas is singing). It didn't seem like Jason or Gilby were really into that song as much as they were when Dilana sang with them. And honestly, there is only one Mick Jagger, so give it a rest Lukas!!

Dilana is still the best performer and singer and looks the best in front of the band. Get over what she said about the others. Magni is a good singer, but I think he's too nice to front these guys. Toby is an average singer/performer, and I think Supernova (Tommy Lee) knows the young girls will want him more than they want the older guys. And as I said before, gremlin skunk boy just needs to go!!

I'm glad to see that somebody else thought that Lukas singing with Supernova was crap....might have been the song itself, but it didn't work for me....

I was surprised to see Ryan go last night, thought it would have been Storm first, but voting errors aside, it is all going to come down to who Supernova want and they've probably already decided on who it will be and I don't think it would ever have been Ryan...and in spite of how awesome Dilana sings, I don't think it will be her...in fact I think the reason they exposed all the angst and drama with Dilana was to get voters against her....Lord only knows what the others are up to through the week....is everybody else nicey nice...somehow I doubt it...

I, for one, was happy that Ryan left. His performance last night was terrible! My husband listened for about two seconds before saying, "that guy's horrible!" Gosh, I don't know that he was ever on key! Plus, I agree that the whole "climbing onto the speakers" was staged. And it took him forever to get up there...the ole' joints must not be working like they used to...

I enjoy Lukas. However, I think he'd be more suited for a band that plays punk / alternative rock. Like others have said, he's too young to front SuperNova. But maybe he could become the next Davey Havoc or something....

Storm should be the next to go. She wasn't good at all either last night. I hate her screaming...totally throws her pitch off! Seems like a nice lady, but definitely not right for the band.

I also like Dilana, but was a little scared during her song. It was totally manic, like many others have said.

Magni is my favorite. I was so happy that my little baldy was safe this week. I'd been worried about him. And to the guest who said he wasn't a family man because he's trying to make the band (which would ultimately help out his family a lot!!), shut up!

Awesome recap Curlio...love hearing your input!

So our tragedy is your good luck. Satan.

Good morning everybody! A few comments on last night's show:

---ALL REPEAT SONGS AGAIN!!!!! I'm no math whiz, but a general estimate would be that they need about 150 songs to get through a season. Are you really telling me that Mark Burnett doesn't have the dough to clear 150 different songs? Plus, once you get permission to do one of an artist's songs, it's usually pretty easy to get the rest. Maybe it has to do with the houseband . . . they don't want to have to learn 150 songs but I doubt it. Enough with the repeats already! I'm seriously considering going over to Dave Navarro's blog and leaving a comment for him. Because we all know Dave has all the power--NOT!
Nicole, I feel your pain on this one, but don't assume that it's that cheap. I read somewhere (here?) that last season of RS was very expensive, at least as far as "reality" tv goes, because of the licensing and performance fees. The fees are based in part on audience size. So when you have a few million viewers, I'm sure the price goes up.

Aside from cost, I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of high profile acts have simply refused to let the songs be licensed because they find RS to be silly. Something tells me the Beatles catalog wouldn't be used if Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr had the publishing rights, which control the licensing. Though I'm trying to figure out who has the rights to Instant Karma, a Lennon solo song. That was used in a Nike commercial way back when, causing quite a stir. I guess Yoko doesn't have any problem with selling his songs.

Great re-cap Curlio!

My quick take:Some have said, mainly Bill Lanta of Atlanta that the awful performances were some form of protest.
I'm on the fence about the protest part but Dilana hopping around like Whitney on crack, OMG, I'm pretty tough and I felt pity for the poor wrench.
Hers was the worst performance I have ever seen at any level on Rockstar, by far. Ryan, awful beyond words or maybe his was the worst, a tie maybe, He actually looked drunk to me and with the look on Gilbys face I new I had my 15 point extra in the RSGH contest this week. Dilana practically took herself completely out last night, Ryan discredited himself, and my Stormy sang defensively instead of her usual go after the game offenive mode. She was the best of the three but her worst of the season. She is so good normally she just was relatively worse. Lukas was out of place with the SN song, it was the worst so far by SN. To me Toby is in the lead now, but Stormy has my votes and attention. Magni, is gonna hurt him self with the lone wolf sh**, count on it.

Dilana may be the next out. Either her or Magni, instead of my Stormy. All of the Dilana fans are gonna have their panties in a wad if she goes next. Will

Next Tues I have my surgery and so I am expecting lots of good re-caps and post to read and re-read during my recovery. I will be around through Monday but, just don't think I have abandoned the fold. Will bonk bonk bonk bonk bonk bonk bonk bonk

I understand the Ryan was somewhat a ugly loser to the band. That is not good, and is not even reasonalbe for someone who just got the exposure of a lifetime. What toolish behavior. Poor poor pitiful Ryan. Boo Hoo! weeeeh

I think that Toby and Magni-either one-would be great to front Supernova; however, I believe that Dilana is the absolute best choice. She has delivered the best performances by far-barring that crazy thing she did last night.
I was tossed up between Dilana and Lukas at first, but the more I see Lukas perform, the less I like his style. Most of the time, I can't even understand what he's saying. I hated to see Ryan go, but he'll be better off. He's a wonderful solo-type guy. His prowess on the piano is second to none and he'll go far and above what Supernova will. Storm seems to be the wild card. I don't dislike her or like her as a performer.

Ryan was bound to go this week or next week. He has come a long way as a performer, but to me was a little over the top and kinda funny at the same time. Maybe a musical would be better fit for his dramatic antics. The winner will be Lukas. Magni has not exhibited one ounce of creativity. He has not done an original, or even attempted to make a cover his own. Lukas's voice stood out over SN's guitars and drums, and I could not take my eyes off him when he performed. He has the kind of voice that is recognizable is any scenario, coupled with his creativity, he is the one!!!!!!

It was a tough decision, I wouldn't want to make it. I think in the end it had to do with who they think will work best for them. Personally I would have sent Dilanna home. I think she made a bad song choice and didn't sing it very well. I also think for the first time people are noticing her botching the lyrics, which she has done quite often in the last few weeks (usually dropping a verse). But then again her first 3-4 performances where amazing and of course you want to keep someone with that kind of potential around.
As for the Supernova songs I still havent felt the spark yet, so I don't think we have seen the right combination. Though to me I think Toby was close. So my bet is either Magni, or Storm. But will see this thing is super close.

I just wanted to say something about Ryan. Be forewarned that I am in his camp and this is a pro-Ryan post. I think it was obvious that he was not what SuperNova was looking for and I never expected him to win; I only hoped he would stay around one more week. I understand what everyone is saying about he tried to hard, etc., and I couldn't agree more. But recently I began watching the show in anticipation of what he would do. With Ryan, you just knew that something different would happen, be it something good or something bad.

I had another thought about the show last night and it pertains to Lukas' performance with the band. I was thinking about Dave Navarro's comment earlier in the competition when he said that most of the competitors would literally disappear in front of SuperNova. I think that was a valid observation at the time, but now, after seeing Lukas with the band last night, I think that for the first time, the band disappeared behind the lead singer. I'm not a huge Lukas fan, but he's definitely got something.

At this point I just wish all of the rockers well as they all have had very entertaining and memorable moments. I'll be missing them all when the show is over.

dilana and Lukus will both take center stage and leave Supernova in the back nothing more than a support band. Why can't they see that? And for talent...I haven't liked them since day one! I still like Magni the most but I doubt that Supernova sees that! And Dilana should have been bounced just because of her unprofessional actions!

Dilana has everything needed to front Supernova, she was given a public thrashing during last weeks show due to her comments. Because of the over the top exposure to her comments, she was put in the bottom three. Dilana is the only one who has never had a bad performance, excluding last nights rendition of psycho killer, wrong choice. She is by far the most talented of the group

I think the voters rob Ryan Star his right to be the Lead Singer. What were you guys thinking? There has to be too many deaf ears out there! Too many blinded people who didn't pay attention to his performance. Shame on all of you who voted him out. There should be a investigation on this.

This is a carbon copy just like American Idol. Supernova bring back Ryan Star. Your group will not go very far in the music business. Just remember his name guys.
