Rock Star: Supernova show off original songs curlio
 2006-09-05 22:22:12
Television The rockers on Rock Star: Supernova stepped up their game this week, each of them playing originals. This week should definitely help the guys of Supernova sort out who they want to pick as their lead singer. We, however, will have to wait until next week to find out.

As the show opens, Brooke Burke announces that Ryan Star, while gone, is not forgotten. He holds the top three spots on the MSN downloads! The recap covers in very short order what momROCKS recapped from the webisode. Dilana's poor me routine during the toast, and the songwriting clinic where Toby impresses, Lukas is lazy, and Dilana is unimaginative. They also showed Paul, from House Band, saying that Dilana wanted to change the song.

Dilana was up first, but poor Dilana had another reason to be upset. She tore a calf muscle during rehearsal and had to be carried out to the stage. She first sang "Behind Blue Eyes", the Who classic that she had never heard before. Her version was fairly good actually. I would have expected her to go more in the Limp Bizkit vein for the song. Her original was called Supersoul. For that one she got up and hopped around on stage on one leg. I thought the original was rather good too. Dave Navarro commended Dilana for pulling off the performance with her torn muscle. He liked the interaction with the audience, but wasn't too sure of her original. Tommy Lee liked the original however. Gilby Clarke said that she takes her lyrics very literal and explains in all in detail. Dilana needs to use more imagination. Jason Newsted thanked her for her strong will and effort.

After the break Brooke announced that the New Year's Eve show in Las Vegas is sold out. But there will be a second show on New Year's Day. More importantly, House Band willopen for Supernova on the tour, with some of the other rockers performing with them! Finally a reason to buy tickets!

Magni was up next. He first performed Back in the USSR by the Beatles. That was followed by his original which he translated and wrote English lyrics for. I thought both performances were awesome. The guitar riff on his original was really cool. As usual he performed wonderfully. Dave liked the guitar riff as well and said that's the most aggressive he's heard Magni's voice the whole show. Meanwhile as usual, Supernova didn't like Magni's performance. Tommy said the performances were exactly the same. Magni said that's because they were both performed by him. Gilby said he understand what Tommy means, as it would have been nice for Magni to take the original performance up a notch.

Normally I would save a rant for the end of the recap, but I can't hold it in. Why the heck is Supernova so down on Magni? I just don't get it. He's the Mig for season 2, the guy that keeps giving excellent performances, and putting his heart and soul into it all. But instead of compliments all he gets is "Why did you play guitar on that one?" followed the next week by "Why didn't you play guitar on that one?". Just send Magni on his way so he can go off and make better music than Supernova could ever dream of making. If Magni wasn't such a laid-back nice guy he probably would have called them on it by now.

Okay, now that that is out of my system, Storm was up next. As she got onstage, Dave interrupted and wanted to come perform the David Bowie classic Suffragette City with Storm Large! After the Bowie song, Storm performed "Ladylike," her original. I liked it, but I'm just not sure it's Supernova material. It's a little too funky for them I think. Dave said he has been onstage with some great singers and that felt just like it. He said her original was his favorite so far, from last season too. Tommy could only say that the original was "zoooh" which I think is good. Gilby seconded that, and said it was two great songs.

Lukas Rossi was up with a stripped down version of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer. As a Bon Jovi fan, I thought it was a really good performance. I didn't know Bon Jovi could sound grunge. His original, "Headspin" is about his mother and how no one is perfect. Jason was singing along with the song. Dave said that Lukas had proven himself to be energetic, but this showed the emotional performer in him. He said this song would bring out the lighters, or cellphones as they use now. Tommy asked the audience if they liked it, they cheered in answer. Gilby says he's inspired when he watches Lukas perform.

Toby Rand had the last spot. His version of Mr Brightside by the Killters wasn't as good as Marty last year, but then again I adored Marty. His original, "Throw it Away" was very catchy and had most everyone singing along. He ran out to the Supernova platform, where Tommy grabbed Toby's ass. I fear those aussies may have been right about Toby all along Dave told Toby that EVS isn't just Australian anymore. He said that Toby's song was instantly memorable and had everyone singing it. Gilby said that it was a blast, and Toby puts the fun in rock and roll. Jason said that Toby takes people in and embraces them.

At the end of the show, we didn't just see the bottom three. We saw all of the rockers, rated highest to lowest. Oddly enough it exactly mirrored my top to bottom ratings:
Toby
Lukas
Magni ( I would actually have Lukas and Magni in a tie for second)
Storm
Dilana

So what are your rankings? Who is going home? I think Magni or Storm will bite the dust tonight. They don't like Magni so if he lands there they will get rid of him. As I said, he's better off anyhow!

Good morning all! Thanks for the recrap, Curlio, and thanks for clearling up the Evs thing, Goo. I didn't know either but was embarassed to ask.

As for the contestants, well, they have some stuff to be embarassed about too:

Di-whine-a: I am incapable of enjoying any of her performances anymore because I know she's just thinking about herself and her tired old problems. ...Blue Eyes was mediocre, way too pity-party, not enough angst. Supersoul, the original, sucked because it was 'I'm wonderful, I can do it' sort of song which would have been fine and uplifting if she had faced any actual adversity. As it stood, it was another ten minutes of D wallowing in her tears and then celebrating her own awesomeness. I totally agree with Gilby (I know, shoot me now) that she's too literal in her song writing.

Dilana = Too much ego, not enough imagination.

MAGNIficent: Hands down, I am thoroughly convinced that he has the best voice for rock n roll in either season Rockstar. He is always perfectly on key and he manages to get the grit in without sounding transgendered (dilana), in pain (lukas), or broadway (storm). Back in the USSR was one of the best covers I've ever heard of that song and the original while not catchy (or sappy) like some others really surprised me in a good way. Very modern . . .kind of like if Live/Fuel/etc. had evolved into mor modern music. However . . . I guess I can see the point about him not really changing it up. He is one flavor, and even if that flavor is perfection, it can get dull. However, he's certainly someone that I would consider as 'willing to work and change' if I was picking a lead singer for my supergroup of washed up rock stars. he's got a solid base . . . SN could mold him into their style of lead singer. I don't think Magni's out of it yet.

Magni = Too much vanilla, not enough fudge ripple.

Storm: She owned the stage last night. Miles ahead of the rest as far as emotion, energy, and pure artistic merit are concerned. She took Suffragette City, kicked it around the stage for a few minutes, slap it silly and then flung it up at the leering Tommy lee. My one critique was her Amish outfit---I can understand wanting to get away from the low cut, hoochie outfits but Amish is never the best fashion statement to make. Her original was awesome: second best of the season (behind Zayra, of course). Makes me wonder if this is the REAL storm, and she was trying to be something she's not for all those past weeks when she annoyed me. If she'd been like this since the beginning, she might have been my favorite (or at least my back up favorite for when Z was eliminated).

Storm = Too much time, not enough of herself

Lukas: Again, I'm forced to ask the minions of Curlio.com, were we watching the same show? Living on a Prayer was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen on RS (and I'm counting Groupie Barbie in that statement). He did a slowed down, Goth version of a BON JOVI SONG! He destroyed the catchy melody, which is why that song was a hit in the first place, mumbled and winced his way through the lyrics, and did that painful voice thing that pisses Jason off so much throughout the whole thing. The whole performance was very high school talent show---amateur, amateur, amateur. Marty's Britany Spears worked because he did not lose the catchy beat of the song, he just dirtied it up. Lukas was not even singing the same song. Oh, and his original was self-indulgent and musically dead.

Lukas = too much EMO, not enough Paxil

Crocodile Randee (and RIP to his fellow aussie, Steve Irwin): Yeah, he was alright on Mr. Brightside. But isn't that song like super easy to sing? I even sound good singing along to it on the radio. Not particularly impressive. His original, which was praised by the band for being so catchy, sounds like the sort of song that goes into high rotation on the radio and leaves me wanting to stab my eardrums repeatedly with a sharp stick after the fourth or fifth time I hear it. However, Toby and Tommy Lee are kind of cute together. Like two spikey puppies with giant erections falling all over each other and yelping.

Toby = too much schlong, not enough music

I'm predicting a Magni or Dilana elimination tonight, leaning towards Dilana. Her 'poor me' story arc has run its course and it will be 'gasp!' shocking if the former front runner is eliminated before the finale and with a hurt foot. Call the wambulance!!!!

Toby confirmed, in my mind, that he's the best match for SN which in no way says anything positive about his talent as a singer. We all know Magni can sing circles around him and Storm can kick his ass. But Tommy Lee and Toby will go skipping off into the sunset, holding hands, searching for a case of Fosters and a strip club.

Peace!

Love or hate Lukas, that kid has talent.

I was so fearful for him being stuck with a Bon Jovi music mcNugget. But it turned out to be just another opportunity to show his unique talent. To the people who dismissed it as being too slow and grumbly: just please look closely at what he did. He took this cookie-cutter, pop-rock song and set it to a waltz. It was so unexpected and it reminded me of a cross between Buckley and the Cure. There were some kinks, no doubt. But he had a lot more work to do to get ready than say Magni or Toby (who I think are great, by the way) who performed little more than karaoke versions of their covers.

Anyways, Bon Jovi sold a lot of albums so I guess there are a lot of folks out there who would prefer to hear their music over what Lukas did. As for me, I never liked a Bon jovi tune until I heard that version last night.

Can anyone give me a link so I can watch Lukas again? Thanks

Great Re-Cap! I read it before hitting the rockstar site to watch the performances. (I had to work last night)

Dilana's original, while much better than the crap I saw of her on YouTube, really kinda sucked. She wasn't bad on Behind Blue Eyes, but alas, I think this is the end of the road for her. What a fickle fan I am!

What the heck is wrong with SN??? Magni was awsome on both songs. Ok so Tommy has a *ahem* soft spot for Toby, I can understand that. You're absolutely right Curlio, he is this seasons MiG!snif I really liked his orignial, thats the kind of song when I'm flipping through stations on the radio to find something that didn't suck, I would stop on.

It's about time Storm showed us who she is, although it might be too late for her. Based on last nights performances she should so not go. I really liked her original. And well if this doesn't pan out for her, perhaps she and Dave should do some performances together, their chemistry on stage was great.

Lukas, well MSN didn't see the point in airing his Bon Jovi song so I didn't get to see the performance. I'll just use my imagination and assume that I would hate it seeing as I didn't like his original. I know he is pretty much the favorite to win, but I think his lead has been narrowed down by....

Toby, ok I wasn't WoWed by the Killers song. His original however, I found catchy, and quite enjoyable. His showmanship on the song was really great too, I liked how he interacted with everyone, the audience, SN, and his fellow rockers.

I hope the Magni fans voted their hearts out. I'm thinking it'll be between Storm and Dilana. Storm has finally proven that she deserves to stay over Dilana.

Well thats my 2 cents anyways.

Josher--are you really gremlin/skunk boy under cover?

Lukas should be SN's last choice, but I think they are looking for someone to appeal to the grunge crowd instead of the thirtysomethings that would probably actually buy their albums. From the beginning, they have praised him even though the majority of his performances sucked.

IMO, the only person that fits the type of band these guys all came from is Dilana. Maybe I've seen too many videos when MTV actually aired them, but she looks and sounds like she belongs in a band with these guys (at least Gilby and Tommy). If she doesn't win, which I am convinced she won't, I will buy any of her solo CD's.

The only real thing Toby has going for him is that he is cute and SN will need that to attract the young crowd, but he has too much gangsta/hip-hop in his moves for my taste--but Tommy likes him, soooo.

Storm needs to be playing with a funk group, not a rock group--she has good vocals, but hated her original and can't stand David Bowie either.

Magni's got a great voice and I don't see anything wrong with his stage presence. I personally like to be able to watch the lead singer actually sing instead of run around the entire arena like a teenage girl.

Obviously, my two choices would be Magni and Dilana. But like last season, crap will win, as it should, because Magni and Dilana will do better on their own or with another band who doesn't have such a high opinion of themselves. It will be between Toby and Lukas, no question. And I would hope Toby would beat Lukas just because he's easier on the eyes in case I ever have to watch one of their performances.

I've been building up a "defense" for Magni for a long time in my head for all of those people who bag on stage presence. So brace yourselves, 'cause here it comes.

Magni is above all else a standard issue European rocker, a bit cuter, more cuddly, and more talented than usual, but still standard overall. Having lived in the Netherlands for 6 years, I discovered that by American standards, Europe is rather laid back when it comes to everything. Maybe it's all the pot flowing out from Amsterdam, I dunno - but they're mellow. Bjork and Mick Jagger are really exceptions, not the rule. The singers are good, the bands are good, but audiences in Europe are simply fanatical! They get into the song with very little prodding. Unlike Americans who you usually have to beg to sing along, Europeans will sing with EVERY song, and sing even louder when instructed to. So when someone like Magni, who probably has never played to an American audience before, gets sent over here, he doesn't have that American stage presence. He may never get it fully. It may develop a little bit or not at all. To them, it's really more about the music than how manic you are onstage. And come on folks - it's really hard to get into it with only 2 songs. If you've got a gimmick, it's easier. Storm has her Crazy Eyes, Lukas and Dilana have that goth thing going for them. Toby has hottness on his side. Magni is just Magni - Love him or leave him.

Mirrorball:I thought Magni's was great and don't understand why SN was down on him. It was great to hear him rock out more than usual. I sort of agree with the stage style, but I don't see many of the other rockers really varying things much either. Lukas does his stumble around as if about to fall over bit; Dilana scowls and does the head banging move; Storm has her little dancer posture thing with the arm and then always drops to her knees at the front of the stage; Toby does that sort of semi-hunched over ska hop thing.
I couldn't of said it better myself!

{Loved the comments about "House". I can't wait to see it, taped it because I was at a concert last night. Taped SN too, but watched it first before voting for Magni and Toby.}

Dilana is just done...put her out of her misery! Drop the kick she reminds me of the short girl on LCStanding with the constant kicking. Her sad looking faces, her constant bringing up her poor me I did something bad and now I'm ruined. When she had someone carry her on stage, I choked, I wanted her to fall off the stool and slam her head on the floor. Why did she need someone to carry her out there if she could jump up and dance around? Limp on out there and stop trying for the sympathy votes. Makes me wonder if she did hurt herself or it was all for show? (would someone buy her some good shampoo with a conditioner!)

Cheerleader Storm, is good, but I don't see her with SN. I see her more in her own band. Maybe she can tour with SN like Marty Casey did with INXS?

Didn't care for Skunk boy tonight. I thought Lukas' performances were more alike than Magni's. I loved Magni's songs, I had no problem with how he preformed.

Toby is moving into the lead...he may have this won.
I like to watch to see which SN member cheers on which contestant. You can see it in how they react to each song...if they sit and sleep through it or if they jump up and dance.

HOPING THEY DUMP DILANA!!

A really great show last night. I'm glad they all got to do an original.

My rating from last night:
1)Storm-killed Suffragette City, and a very cool original.
2)Toby- OK on Brightside, but a really modern and catchy original.
3)Magni-Great cover, his original lacked the punch some of the others had.
4)Lukas-good & bad on the cover, original was good but he tried way to hard.
5)Dilana-she's lost her edge (confidence), original not bad but not a fan of her lyrics.

Though I think Toby is the real front runner now. Because I think it's a little to late for Storm to win, though I thought she kicked *last night. they are all great in there own way, but I think Lukas ans Dilana both came in trying to win on style and that only takes you so far until your flaws show through.

But then again it's just a TV show and a rock band. But darn it's fun to watch.

Although you are "a" dissenting voice you are not the only one. There are just some things I don't get: The French Obsession with Jerry Lewis, Bowling and/or Darts on TV, and the popularity of Lukas.

He mumbled his way through the song again. Like I said yesterday - while the other 'rockers' have clear strong voices, Lukas seems to be inarticulate.

Right from the beginning Magni has always had the best singing voice out of all the male rockers on the show. Lukas & Toby tend to just scream their lyrics so that they sound like they're rocking out. I'm over this show. Supernova couldn't spot talent even if it slapped them in the face. Have you heard their originals? They're crap! Magni deserves better material to work with and his talent deserves a better band. It's so obvious that they're gonna make Toby win anyway. No offense but Toby may be charming but his voice is not high caliber.

Interesting seeing all the comments about Toby being the front runner.

USA Today's Pop Candy blog would seem to agree (I think her comment on the songwriting is spot on):

------------------------

http://blogs.usatoday.com.../09/rock_star_one_w.html

'Rock Star': One week to go

Did Toby win Rock Star last night?

It kind of looked that way to me -- though the crowd certainly dug Lukas, Magni and Storm (we'll get to Dilana later), Toby was the only performer that the audience and judges both seemed to approve.

Some things we learned from last night's show:

1. The contestants write better songs than Supernova. Come on, you were thinking the same thing -- I've completely forgotten the Supernova tracks we've heard thus far, but those by Storm and Toby are still in my head this morning. Color me impressed, especially since my expectations were low.

2. The judges don't feel our Magni love. I thought he sounded great last night, but the band was underwhelmed. We got a similar sense last week after Ryan performed, so I'm a little worried.

3. The crowd doesn't feel the judges' Lukas love. Tommy and the gang were moved by Lukas' original song, but this time, it was the audience's turn to offer half-hearted support. Contrary to those nutty Internet rumors, I predict Supernova won't pick Lukas because he doesn't have what the band so desperately needs: deafening screams from the young, blond ladies.

4. Dilana is falling -- fast. As if her calf injury wasn't bad enough, it was painfully obvious that her "Supersoul" was the flimsiest track of the bunch. And did I hear her seriously suggest "control, alt, delete" as lyrics to Gilby Clarke? I still like the woman, but not even I can get behind that! For the first time all season, her end may be near.

As for the people bagging on Lukas. You obviously know nothing about music. Why is it that nobody else on the show as enough talent or balls to change up a song like the billboard hit "living on a prayer" (which was a useless song until Lukas put his touch on it) and yet still bag on him. People!!! know your music before you comment!!!

God I hope that spoiler is wrong...I can't stand Lukas....just can't tolerate him at all...I can't understand anything he sings, I can't stand the way he swings himself around on stage...to me he is the same every time he performs, he sounds the same, moves the same...I also can't stand his hair...I can't stand his smirk....okay, enough of that...I thought Toby was the best last night, then Storm, though I agree that she probably isn't SN's style, then Magni, with Lukas 4th and Dilana in the bottom...I think she still has great vocals, but I'm tired of the woe is me story about screwing up and she looks as if she has given up....
...Please God, let Lukas be in the bottom 3 tonight and let the spoiler about him being the winner be wrong...

Ah Great, let me be the one to stir things up a little bit for once.

I agree, that Toby seems to be the person to front SuperNova at this time.

Though Lukas had quite good lyrics (imho), his mumbling and singing from the throat still bothers me ( And as most Chris Daughtry fans around here might remember, That was my biggest dislike for him.)

Magni is in my opinion amazing, but as said before, he's from europe, and they essentially have a different philosophy there, different stage presence and a different kind of humor. Something that the members of Supernova probably don't understand or don't want to understand.

Storm's lyrics were good, but definately not in the style of Supernova.

Dilana's lyrics lacked originality, like Gilby said, just all too literal. From all the contestants she has grown the least musically.

And then Toby, though Toby's original song was very catchy, the song itself still sounded very generic to me. and there just lacks something with him where I would go scream "Go Toby!". I still can't put my finger on it why that is though.

Pop Candy was right on (thank you, mirrorball, for posting that!); especially with number 1:

"The contestants write better songs than Supernova."

I hadn't thought of that, but she has an excellent point - SN's songs suck so far. If the songs they've subjected us to so far is what they are going to do, then I won't be buying their album even if Magni or Storm win. I'm a big fan of the Crüe, like a lot of Metallica & Guns N' Roses; but I'd rather watch or listen to the House Band any day instead of SN.

Magni did a great set last night. And whomever said that Magni is this season's Mig is spot-on. Last season they complained about Mig's stage presence as well, and I don't see what is/was wrong with either of them. They both have/had the best voices of the group, and sing with feeling. Yet SN and INXS rarely give them any kudos. Is SN only going to tour, or do they want their music to be listenable as well???

Storm was outstanding last night. I especially liked her original - I would buy that. I can see her fronting SN, if they start writing better songs. <G>

Toby was ok, but I was... whelmed. I didn't especially like his original, but it certainly was catchy.

I don't understand why Lukas can't pronounce his words when singing. When he is talking he seems just fine. Even though I was a big Bon Jovi fan back in the day and know that song by heart, I could NOT figure out what Lukas was singing. I've already forgotten his original.

Dilana... well, it's all been said. She should go home tonight. And I hope she takes Lukas with her.

My standings from last night:

1. Storm
2. Magni
3. Toby
4. Lukas
5. Dilana

Curlio - I'm having an awful time with the verification code - is there a problem with using Firefox? This is try number 6.

growing up with those bands only proves one thing...you're old!
Yep, I'm old. I've established my career and family and have the expendable cash to drop $125 for SuperNova concert tickets. Hope they remember that before they put someone like Lukas fronting their band! nudge

If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!

I think the performances went well for the most part, except for Dilana and Magni.

Magni is just not right for SN. he doesn't have that spark like like Toby or Lukas which is what they are looking for and is performance was definitely forgettable. What did he sing again???

and Dilana, too much drama not enough talent

I'm sorry to say that to all the ladies out there but some of you that may even agree, a woman can't front this band. Any other band for sure, even INXS but given the current members of SN it just doesn't fit, no matter how good the women may be it doesn't seem probable.

Toby has too much of that surfer/pop star rocker kind of feel (not dark enough, but great voice and knows how to work the crowd. Big +

I feel that even though Lukas doesn't have the greatest voice he definitely has the stage presence SN is looking for and his version of living on a prayer was great. Do you think SN would have a girl like Jon Bon Jovi fronting their band...I doubt it, hence the gothic style that some may call it. Does anyone pay attention to the SN rocker's bios???

WHO THE heck EVEN VOTES FOR HIM . I TRULY WISH EITHER DILANA OR TOBY WINS . LUKAS IS GOOD BUT HE IS NOT NEW AT ALL . STORM IS JUST A STORM , MAN IS SHE GUD !!

To answer your question, Zayralover, I vote for him.

And please don't yell at me.

With a name like that, you'd think I'd be in
, but, eh, not so much.

Shelleybean, I totally agree with you. SN would be wise to consider who their fans are likely to be. I think INXS did . . . giving all of us hausfraus and working girls a little bit of eye candy to replace ole' Michael Hutchinson. Who in the world could work up a good bon-bon fueled fantasy over creepy lil' Lukas?
