Rock Star: Supernova show off original songs curlio
 2006-09-05 22:22:12
Television The rockers on Rock Star: Supernova stepped up their game this week, each of them playing originals. This week should definitely help the guys of Supernova sort out who they want to pick as their lead singer. We, however, will have to wait until next week to find out.

As the show opens, Brooke Burke announces that Ryan Star, while gone, is not forgotten. He holds the top three spots on the MSN downloads! The recap covers in very short order what momROCKS recapped from the webisode. Dilana's poor me routine during the toast, and the songwriting clinic where Toby impresses, Lukas is lazy, and Dilana is unimaginative. They also showed Paul, from House Band, saying that Dilana wanted to change the song.

Dilana was up first, but poor Dilana had another reason to be upset. She tore a calf muscle during rehearsal and had to be carried out to the stage. She first sang "Behind Blue Eyes", the Who classic that she had never heard before. Her version was fairly good actually. I would have expected her to go more in the Limp Bizkit vein for the song. Her original was called Supersoul. For that one she got up and hopped around on stage on one leg. I thought the original was rather good too. Dave Navarro commended Dilana for pulling off the performance with her torn muscle. He liked the interaction with the audience, but wasn't too sure of her original. Tommy Lee liked the original however. Gilby Clarke said that she takes her lyrics very literal and explains in all in detail. Dilana needs to use more imagination. Jason Newsted thanked her for her strong will and effort.

After the break Brooke announced that the New Year's Eve show in Las Vegas is sold out. But there will be a second show on New Year's Day. More importantly, House Band willopen for Supernova on the tour, with some of the other rockers performing with them! Finally a reason to buy tickets!

Magni was up next. He first performed Back in the USSR by the Beatles. That was followed by his original which he translated and wrote English lyrics for. I thought both performances were awesome. The guitar riff on his original was really cool. As usual he performed wonderfully. Dave liked the guitar riff as well and said that's the most aggressive he's heard Magni's voice the whole show. Meanwhile as usual, Supernova didn't like Magni's performance. Tommy said the performances were exactly the same. Magni said that's because they were both performed by him. Gilby said he understand what Tommy means, as it would have been nice for Magni to take the original performance up a notch.

Normally I would save a rant for the end of the recap, but I can't hold it in. Why the heck is Supernova so down on Magni? I just don't get it. He's the Mig for season 2, the guy that keeps giving excellent performances, and putting his heart and soul into it all. But instead of compliments all he gets is "Why did you play guitar on that one?" followed the next week by "Why didn't you play guitar on that one?". Just send Magni on his way so he can go off and make better music than Supernova could ever dream of making. If Magni wasn't such a laid-back nice guy he probably would have called them on it by now.

Okay, now that that is out of my system, Storm was up next. As she got onstage, Dave interrupted and wanted to come perform the David Bowie classic Suffragette City with Storm Large! After the Bowie song, Storm performed "Ladylike," her original. I liked it, but I'm just not sure it's Supernova material. It's a little too funky for them I think. Dave said he has been onstage with some great singers and that felt just like it. He said her original was his favorite so far, from last season too. Tommy could only say that the original was "zoooh" which I think is good. Gilby seconded that, and said it was two great songs.

Lukas Rossi was up with a stripped down version of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer. As a Bon Jovi fan, I thought it was a really good performance. I didn't know Bon Jovi could sound grunge. His original, "Headspin" is about his mother and how no one is perfect. Jason was singing along with the song. Dave said that Lukas had proven himself to be energetic, but this showed the emotional performer in him. He said this song would bring out the lighters, or cellphones as they use now. Tommy asked the audience if they liked it, they cheered in answer. Gilby says he's inspired when he watches Lukas perform.

Toby Rand had the last spot. His version of Mr Brightside by the Killters wasn't as good as Marty last year, but then again I adored Marty. His original, "Throw it Away" was very catchy and had most everyone singing along. He ran out to the Supernova platform, where Tommy grabbed Toby's ass. I fear those aussies may have been right about Toby all along Dave told Toby that EVS isn't just Australian anymore. He said that Toby's song was instantly memorable and had everyone singing it. Gilby said that it was a blast, and Toby puts the fun in rock and roll. Jason said that Toby takes people in and embraces them.

At the end of the show, we didn't just see the bottom three. We saw all of the rockers, rated highest to lowest. Oddly enough it exactly mirrored my top to bottom ratings:
Toby
Lukas
Magni ( I would actually have Lukas and Magni in a tie for second)
Storm
Dilana

So what are your rankings? Who is going home? I think Magni or Storm will bite the dust tonight. They don't like Magni so if he lands there they will get rid of him. As I said, he's better off anyhow!

As for the people bagging on Lukas. You obviously know nothing about music. Why is it that nobody else on the show as enough talent or balls to change up a song like the billboard hit "living on a prayer" (which was a useless song until Lukas put his touch on it) and yet still bag on him. People!!! know your music before you comment!!!

I love how worked up the Lukas fans get over people not liking him!!

Curlio - I'm having an awful time with the verification code - is there a problem with using Firefox? This is try number 6.
Nothing wrong with the code, it should tell you what was wrong, as long as you accept cookies (and as you eventually managed, it works)

My guess is that it's just a bit hard to decypher the code box sometimes.

It works fine with firefox here.

Mirrorball, thanks for that post. It's an interesting take.

The question has been and still remains "Who's the right person to front SuperNova?". Your guess is as good as mine, I'm clear as mud.

Right out of the gate, Dilana was the one to beat. It was hers to lose, and she managed to orchestrate a streak of stumbles in an unbelievable fashion. Great luck to the CBS producer, but it's devastating to what seemed like a hot rising career. Looking at the positive for Dilana, she was practically unknown until this show. Her increased visibility even with the amiss spectacle should still land her a good record contract. Repackaging and image damage control is not so hard after this show is over where the dust truly settled, assuming she does not get the SN gig. I for one would be curious.

At this point, no one knows what SN is looking for. Having said that, Gilby's comment during the song writing clinic albeit simplistic summarized it best, (paraphrasing here), "Now, it's really.. what are you gonna bring to us. If you're not bringing us anything, then what the heck do I need you for". Another insight that Gilby provided was embedded in his comment regarding Toby's song writing, "Toby comes in with fresh new approach, he's younger, got a lot of energy, it's an energy we need."

Energy, no question Toby wins that hands down. Overall, Dilana and Lukas have that in them. IMO, Storm's performance does not pump up the crowd as much these three. Magni, he moves you with his great singing, an energy I can't clearly explain in words. Energy wise, that would be my order given above.

IMO Dilana is still a pretty complete package BUT tagged with some heavy liabilities, which is crowd acceptance factor and stability/consistency. Who knows, if SN can do damage control for Dilana. If that's probable, can she pull herself out of a slump when that happens? Eg. say she found out that her beloved dog passed away few hours before a New Years Eve show, if she's an emotional kind, will she be able to put that behind her and put on a great show? As for creativity, IMO she had shown that she is creative in her stage style/presence, not in her lyrics writing. I can agree with Dilana (can see flames coming my way), is song writing a big consideration for this gig? I personally don't think so because their concerts are selling tickets now not because of SN's creative song writing, it's the publicity that this show has generated. Anyhow those are the risks SN have to consider regarding Dilana if she's still in the run.

I gotta switch to Magni for a second. Somehow, SN's response didn't come across so much as a criticism for say. These 5 artists are auditioning for a job. Magni has proven to Dave, SN and pretty much all here that he has the best vocal hands down. So back to Gilby's point, okay everyone knows Magni can sing, so what else can you bring to us? That's how I would rephrase Tommy's comment. I believe Magni is still under consideration, and SN would like to see if Magni can bring more to the table. That's how I feel too when I commented about his stage style. I am a fan, IMO, he needs to demonstrate that he has many more dimensions/offerings aside from his great vocals to improve his chances if he really wants to land this job. Remember too that Gilby was not sure if Magni is a creative musician. I do not think Magni can secure the job with only 1 week left. In a bizarre way, I think it's probably a good thing for Magni to be in the bottom 3 tonight. Keep in mind, anyone of them has 60% chance to be in the bottom 3 with only 5 left. This gives him an additional chance to show the world that he can change, or maybe surprise everyone with a performance packed with energy (please, not Ryan's kind of energy!). If Magni does not land this job, it'll be a fresh new beginning for him with tons of opportunities to shine (oh yeah!)

Toby has great-great-great energy, also strong in crowd interaction which is important in live shows, according to Gilby the most complete package (Did Gilby mean Toby's song writing or Toby overall? You be the judge). Lukas has talent that are still pretty green/raw, and has good potentials to evolve into something special.. no guarantee of course. As far as Storm goes, she has a great face, not to be sexist.. just being honest.. a sexy body, professionalism and fun to the team. Magni's greatest offering is his great potential to bring SN's songs up the Billboard Chart, sell CDs/MP3s. As for Dilana, she can put on a good live show with SN, and strong vocals too.

I also agree that Toby seems to be the front runner, but it is still up for grab. I wish SN could perform with each one of them as a preview of how each finalists will fare. Direct comparison, that will take away a lot of the guesses. Don't you agree? Anyway, all of them will have good careers ahead of them compared to what they have accomplished prior to this show. Thanks Curlio for all the recaps!

Interesting point. Of the contestants left, Mangni and Storm haven't performed with SN. Only one of them will get the chance tonight.

I wonder if that will be held against them come elimination time.

My guess is that you'll be selling a pair...

Don't worry, I've been at a concert at "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel on New Year's Eve...all you will be missing are the puking/passed out idiots on the floor...unless, of course, you are the sort who'd want to join them...

As far as "knowing music", or being "too old"...I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Tommy, Gilby, and Jason are all over 40.

Most who love Lukas are under 30.

Those of us who hate Lukas are mostly over 30.

Those of us who own GNR, MC, and Metallica records and would take interest in what these boys are doing are mostly over 30.

Its that simple. Lukas ain't the man. Then again, if Tommy gets his choice, he can see the audience that Lukas isn't going to pull...

Love or hate Lukas, that kid has talent.

Talent at dying his hair? Maybe

Talent at needing anti-depression meds? Definately.

Talent at avoiding eye contact at all times? Definately

Talent at being a stupid drunk and passing out? Yep, he's displayed that too.

Past that, I've only seen musical talent once - when he performed "Creep".

"the Billboad hit...which was a useless song"

Billboard Hit with millions of copies sold, useless song...

I love it when people contradict themselves mid-sentence and all you have to do is point out their lack of logic...

Dilana is still a fantastic singer and entertainer...as to the comments about her not knowing the song from the band "The Who"...where is the surprise? She is not American. My husband and I are still learning about the bands that are considered "legends" in the US.

Curlio, US audiences are tougher because they are more fickle...the people seem to operate as a collective...If you had really liked Dilana, then you would still like Dilana...all I heard yesterday was a remorseful woman trying to come to grips with a new reality.

Dilana: you're great!! stay strong...your true fans will continue to support you!

Not being American has nothing to do with it. She hasn't lived in South Africa for years. She lives in the US now, and she lived in Europe for several years. Both are places where the Who is quite well known.

I don't hold this against her as a major problem (I don't like her for other reasons). I just find it a bit surprising that someone who aspires to front a rock band -- and not a rock band of young naive kids who might think Green Day invented punk -- and make music her life has never heard one of the most influential rock bands of all time that also had one of the best frontmen of all time ... and best drummer and best guitarist, but I'm a fan, so I'm a bit biased there

Maybe I am just being mr Positive today..but I think the top 5 are great and unique in their own way. I think it's a credit to the show the the final 5 are so different and could each add smething to SN.

I think each 5 would be grateful where they are now and the show can really help them launch into a music career from her on in. I won't sit on the fence...I think Toby is best suited to SN..which is the main criteria on which SN will choose from(not whos the most talented).

I kinda see SN as a short term project and thats why Toby will have an instant audience and sell out shows(mainly women). Other 4 I can see building a fan base and music for a long career. I hope Toby goes back to his band Juke Kartel as their songs are amazing. Throw it way being about the 4th best of their originals.

Personally I think Magni might go tonight..as this will be his 3rd or 4th time in bottom 3. He is probably the best singer as a purest....will definately have a great career.

Anyway the show this year has been great.

After watching the latest original Supernova tune...well, Magni just did not fit with them...

Now I'm thinking that Lukas (whom I still think is awful) does belong with Supernova. As bad as these original songs are, they need a lead singer that you can't understand lyrics when they sing!!

Though Lukas had quite good lyrics (imho),
um, err, how could you tell what the lyrics are/were? I watched it twice, trying to figure out wtf he was saying! All I could make out where "you make my head spin" - I think... dusty, do you have some super human abilities to hear thru the mumbles? way cool!!

And then he had the nerve to sing it again last night... if I had been Sn, I would have sent him packing last night. But, I am not a has-been, over aged-pretending to be a teenager rock star...I don't get a final say.

It's funny, hubby asked me if I wanted to go see SN (since I was insistant that we go to AI concert!) and I had to honestly say that I wasn't all that keen on it, unless Magni wins. BUT! Then I heard that House Band and some of the rockers are going to open for SN! NOW I wanna go!! House band rules... and then to hear the Panic Channel is going to be there too? I have heard a few tracks, and I have to say: nice...

Just another hidden talent from the multi-talented dusty! I don't suppose you give lessons on "mumble-understanding" do you? One could make a lot of money on it, me thinks...

Dilana lost our votes at the party when she told Tommy Lee that she was the only one for the band and he should get rid off the others. Then she finished herself off with her comments , See Ya Dilana you will never sell tickets or music to us. Ryan you would have, easily, but you went so Toby you get our votes.

Lukas is my preferred rocker. I loved what he did with Livin' on a Prayer. I'm in my late 40's and remember Bon Jovi's original very well..I still love it...but Lukas took the song and completely put his own spin on it and made it his own. His original, Headspin, was even better on elimination night. He sang with such intensity and passion that it brought tears to my eyes.

I like his charisma, stage presence, maturity, versatility in his vocals and to me he's the total package. Toby would be my second choice, but I didn't care for his Mr. Brightside. With Toby fronting them, I think SN will sound like another pop/rock mainstream band.

Tommy said they are looking for someone a bit different, unusual..and somebody that is memorable. Sounds like Lukas Rossi.

I guess everyone has the right to their own taste and opinion. And those that bash talent because it is not their favorite shows through in their ignorant writing. All the rockers left in the finals are talented and deserve to be there. However, it comes down to who fits best for Supernova. They are not going to please everyone and that's fine, you support those that you like. Coming in with no expectations at the beginning of the show, I started to carefully watch all the performers. One always stood out every single week due to the originality, talent and versatility. That's Lukas Rossi, whether you like it or not. Those that don't, well I'm sorry you just don't 'get it'.
