The rockers on Rock Star: Supernova stepped up their game this week, each of them playing originals. This week should definitely help the guys of Supernova sort out who they want to pick as their lead singer. We, however, will have to wait until next week to find out.
As the show opens, Brooke Burke announces that Ryan Star, while gone, is not forgotten. He holds the top three spots on the MSN downloads! The recap covers in very short order what momROCKS recapped from the webisode. Dilana's poor me routine during the toast, and the songwriting clinic where Toby impresses, Lukas is lazy, and Dilana is unimaginative. They also showed Paul, from House Band, saying that Dilana wanted to change the song.
Dilana was up first, but poor Dilana had another reason to be upset. She tore a calf muscle during rehearsal and had to be carried out to the stage. She first sang "Behind Blue Eyes", the Who classic that she had never heard before. Her version was fairly good actually. I would have expected her to go more in the Limp Bizkit vein for the song. Her original was called Supersoul. For that one she got up and hopped around on stage on one leg. I thought the original was rather good too. Dave Navarro commended Dilana for pulling off the performance with her torn muscle. He liked the interaction with the audience, but wasn't too sure of her original. Tommy Lee liked the original however. Gilby Clarke said that she takes her lyrics very literal and explains in all in detail. Dilana needs to use more imagination. Jason Newsted thanked her for her strong will and effort.
After the break Brooke announced that the New Year's Eve show in Las Vegas is sold out. But there will be a second show on New Year's Day. More importantly, House Band willopen for Supernova on the tour, with some of the other rockers performing with them! Finally a reason to buy tickets!
Magni was up next. He first performed Back in the USSR by the Beatles. That was followed by his original which he translated and wrote English lyrics for. I thought both performances were awesome. The guitar riff on his original was really cool. As usual he performed wonderfully. Dave liked the guitar riff as well and said that's the most aggressive he's heard Magni's voice the whole show. Meanwhile as usual, Supernova didn't like Magni's performance. Tommy said the performances were exactly the same. Magni said that's because they were both performed by him. Gilby said he understand what Tommy means, as it would have been nice for Magni to take the original performance up a notch.
Normally I would save a rant for the end of the recap, but I can't hold it in. Why the heck is Supernova so down on Magni? I just don't get it. He's the Mig for season 2, the guy that keeps giving excellent performances, and putting his heart and soul into it all. But instead of compliments all he gets is "Why did you play guitar on that one?" followed the next week by "Why didn't you play guitar on that one?". Just send Magni on his way so he can go off and make better music than Supernova could ever dream of making. If Magni wasn't such a laid-back nice guy he probably would have called them on it by now.
Okay, now that that is out of my system, Storm was up next. As she got onstage, Dave interrupted and wanted to come perform the David Bowie classic Suffragette City with Storm Large! After the Bowie song, Storm performed "Ladylike," her original. I liked it, but I'm just not sure it's Supernova material. It's a little too funky for them I think. Dave said he has been onstage with some great singers and that felt just like it. He said her original was his favorite so far, from last season too. Tommy could only say that the original was "zoooh" which I think is good. Gilby seconded that, and said it was two great songs.
Lukas Rossi was up with a stripped down version of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer. As a Bon Jovi fan, I thought it was a really good performance. I didn't know Bon Jovi could sound grunge. His original, "Headspin" is about his mother and how no one is perfect. Jason was singing along with the song. Dave said that Lukas had proven himself to be energetic, but this showed the emotional performer in him. He said this song would bring out the lighters, or cellphones as they use now. Tommy asked the audience if they liked it, they cheered in answer. Gilby says he's inspired when he watches Lukas perform.
Toby Rand had the last spot. His version of Mr Brightside by the Killters wasn't as good as Marty last year, but then again I adored Marty. His original, "Throw it Away" was very catchy and had most everyone singing along. He ran out to the Supernova platform, where Tommy grabbed Toby's ass. I fear those aussies may have been right about Toby all along Dave told Toby that EVS isn't just Australian anymore. He said that Toby's song was instantly memorable and had everyone singing it. Gilby said that it was a blast, and Toby puts the fun in rock and roll. Jason said that Toby takes people in and embraces them.
At the end of the show, we didn't just see the bottom three. We saw all of the rockers, rated highest to lowest. Oddly enough it exactly mirrored my top to bottom ratings:
Toby
Lukas
Magni ( I would actually have Lukas and Magni in a tie for second)
Storm
Dilana
So what are your rankings? Who is going home? I think Magni or Storm will bite the dust tonight. They don't like Magni so if he lands there they will get rid of him. As I said, he's better off anyhow!
Great, and fast, recap, sista! OMG what a great show!!
I too love Magni to death, loved both his songs tonight, but SN just doesn't seem to get it. Poor SN, in my opinion. So just let him go, so he can beat out Ryan Star's downloads! He has a great future, just not with SN.
I was actually singing along to Toby's original! How wack is that! Sitting all alone in my living room, pumpin' my hand, singin' loud, hoping no one came in the door to catch me, remembered the curtains were open! :)
And I LOVED Storm's original!! The more I see her perform, the more I like her. She seems to have the weird eye movements a lil more under control, thank the heavens!!
I didn't care for Lukas, either song. It could just be because I dislike the man/boy, and am biased. I dunno. But I still wouldn't buy anything he made. I don't wanna have to read the liner notes to figure out what the words are....
I felt bad for Dilana. She looked very defeated. Either that, or they gave her great pain meds, and she was totally out of it. Either way, not her best night.
I think that if Dilana is in the bottom, and Magni isn't, Dilana will go tomorrow. Sad to say. But that is my opinion.
I hope everybody continues to vote for Toby. By telling the public he's on top, they may decide he doesn't need them to vote for him, which could drop him to the bottom three! People, please vote if you normally would, no one is safe until voting closes!
As an Aussie I really appreciate these recaps, I have to wait another 7 and a half hours for the show to air here, so thankyou for sharing so quickly!
Sigh, unfortunately I agree with everyone's sentiment about Dilana. Let me state that I 'was' a big fan of her. Whatever Dilana said in the webisode just rubbed me in the wrong way, I tried real hard to be open-minded ... that it could be the editing. But then when she did her original, that's it for me. Stop blaming the internet or the audience, it's part of the game. It's the audience that voted for her in the first few weeks.. so why did not you do a screw you song then. If you come out pretty much voiced your resignation, SN/no one would want you to front their band. I do hope she has a super soul, I too think that she is 3/4 out of the door before she even opened her mouth in her original.. at least in my mind. SN makes the call, I have accepted that she is not it. With her feeling so sour, it's best that she departs now before she ruins the show. We shall see tomorrow if Dilana's previous performances are enough to save her a final spot.
Very quickly, I concur too that Storm's original was very good. Nothing else to add, very good performance and I can remember that song very well just listening to it once, the melody and song name is quite unique. Great job Stormy, her popularity/momentum is definitely gaining this week.
Once again, Lukas's performance was great in both counts especially Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer. That's important because IMO he's the only one that stood out from the crowd in terms of doing something different tonight, don't you agree? I'm alright with his original... not my favorite but it was alright. Even if you're not a Lukas fan, you gotta agree that he is quite talented.
Magni, so funny that I felt exactly the same way as Tommy did. I liked the way he sang Beatle's song, but not too fond of his original. I'm definitely a fan of Magni, but don't you guys agree that his stage style is ... bland? It's always the same, I've seen that 2 weeks ago. I don't think Magni can dance, a bit unusual in this business. At least hop, jump, spin-around, bounce your head up and down with the beat, play a guitar, something. Singing wise, it's superb no question about it. I just hope he would bring something new because it's a show after all. In addition, his singing eventhough is good tonight but it does not have that special quality tonight... whereas Lukas's Bon Jovi did.
Toby, solid again. It's kinda wierd, his Mr. Brightside sounded kinda ... foreign.. like it was sang by a British artist .. oh, silly me.. an Auzzie. It's not a critism at all, it's definitely different but it's kinda interesting too. Shaking my head in awe, what a great entertainer Toby is. Kudos!!!
Needless to say, my top 4 is everyone except Ms. Dilana. It's sad that this show turned this way for her, is it bad luck, just a simple mistake, she didn't mean it, yadi-yada, it does not matter. When she tried to take on a war with the audience/world which was her own slip to begin with, that's taking it too far. Even Mr. Tommy Lee have said that just learn from your mistake and hopefully never repeat them because that is just part of life. So she should have just admit your fault (sincerely), go on with life and concentrate on presenting your talent instead of getting stuck on this whole issue. I have said that I was over the whole drama and would welcome the old Dilana with great performances last week, but she didn't even give herself a chance to prove the naysayers wrong. To me, she has given up... probably read some blog too closely. It's such a waste of opportunity, underneath all of this, she's a pretty darn good singer and performer. I sincerely wish her well and all the best in her career, I doubt it will be one with SN.
The recap had to be fast tonight... New Nip/Tuck was on tonight. Three awesome shows in a row for me - House, RS, and N/T! got the recap typed during the commercials because I knew I'd be distracted.
darn darn darn...what a killer performances, Loved Magni, he has no doubt, great vocals, fantastic comand over the music, & stage presence, & Toby is surprising me, his last 3 performances were pretty good, never thaught he has it in him, I dont know what will happen today, crossing my fingers, it would be really sad to see any one going home at this time of the show, but hopeing it isnt Magni.
blaze said: I felt bad for Dilana. She looked very defeated. Either that, or they gave her great pain meds, and she was totally out of it. Either way, not her best night.
My thoughts exactly! During just about every other performance they kept switching to a camera on her and she just looked so out of it (she seemed especially let down that Dave performed with Storm). I assume the meds played at least a small part.
I think my take on it is pretty much in line with the recap. Dilana's original was just OK. I do wish she'd drop the "this song is about me recovering from what happened three weeks ago..." It's not like she was in some horrific car crash and spent six months doing physical rehab and finally worked her way back to the stage. That you can milk for a few months. Getting verbally smacked down for bad mouthing our opponents and then landing in the bottom three. That's worth about 24 hours of milking.
I thought Magni's was great and don't understand why SN was down on him. It was great to hear him rock out more than usual. I sort of agree with the stage style, but I don't see many of the other rockers really varying things much either. Lukas does his stumble around as if about to fall over bit; Dilana scowls and does the head banging move; Storm has her little dancer posture thing with the arm and then always drops to her knees at the front of the stage; Toby does that sort of semi-hunched over ska hop thing.
Storm's performace was quite good, though I agree that the song may not be SN material. I also enjoyed her Bowie cover. Good stuff.
I felt split on Lukas' original. Parts of it I really, really liked. Other parts I didn't because I couldn't understand a darn thing he as singing. I couldn't even summon a guess as to what he might be singing. I really liked his version of Living on a Prayer. I thought he totally made it his own thing. (though still a few vocal tics I could do without).
Toby's version of Mr. Brightside was just OK; his vocals sounded odd to me. Sounded a little more high pitched or something. His original -- well, I thought the song was OK, very catch at all. But the performance was great. I loved his energy and the way he worked the crowd.
I can't wait until next week's house too. He apparently finds out about no-longer-paralyzed man. I just hope that house stays 1 hour and RS stays 1 hour. The alternative (and me without TiVo) is just too horrific to think of!
Another great show tonight. I remember early on how a lot of people were complaining that the talent level this year was below that of last year. Maybe it's just because this show is current and we are in the heat of it, but I think these guys blow away most of the competition last year.
Dilana: I agree with what's been posted previously that she looks defeated. Behind Blue Eyes was sung sweetly, but I didn't care for her original.
Magni: I know that there are a lot of Magni fans here, but I'm not crazy about him. I think he's a nice guy, and a fine singer, but he just doesn't seem to have "rock star" energy. He doesn't do much on stage. When he sings is when I check the clock or get a beer.
Storm: What an awesome original song. I agree with Curlio, however, that it isn't really Supernova material. I don't thik she will win, but I'm going to have to check out getting some of her solo recordings.
Lukas: Each week I like him more and I liked his take on the Bon Jovi song. I know the band likes him, but I've never been able to see Lukas and the band as a good fit together.
Toby: Like Curlio, I preferred Marty Casey's version (also the killer's version) of Mr. Brightside. But the high energy level of his original song was fantastic! He is my pick as the winner of this contest.
Great recap (as always). I've come to the conclusion that the scuttlebutt that SN has already chosen Lukas for the lead singer is true. You can pretty much tell who is out the door and who SN likes by their reactions while listening and responses afterward. Lukas is most likely the "Chosen One". SN gave him all kinds of kudoes and dissed Magni. Go figure. Magni's performances were my favorites. I loved his original song, LOVE him. Can't wait for a release of an album, single, anything (can't find anything yet).
I just can't seem to get into listening to Lukas. I didn't care for either performance. I wish him well, if indeed he does win, just not my cup of tea. I like to understand the words and I can't his.
The other performances were good. I liked Storm and Toby's original songs. They both are good performers.
Dilana, Dilana, Dilana--the world does not revolve around you, whatever happened to "getting the whole thing behind you". Most of us are really tired of the whole drama and are ready to move on to other things.
I expect Storm or Magni (boo hoo) to go tomorrow night.
If Magni goes, I guess I will still watch to see Toby.
Regards.
Are Dilana's issues very prominent in the press over there (US) right now? I mean really, it seems like she is shooting herself in the foot by always going on about it, if she moved on cleanly the public would forget about it, but critisicing them in song? Why didn't she write lyrics about victory, that's what should have been in her mind.
But no, all she seems to think about is her soap opera antics. Doesn't she realise how the voting works? It's not that we vote against her, she just got passed over by us voting for everyone else.
I just bought the DVD of Rock Star INXS for $10 at Wally World. Money well spent---several performances by my fave from last year, "Marty". I agree, his performance of Mr. Bright Eyes is the BEST, as were all his others. Mig, Jordis, Ty and Suzy were also great. Last year was a great year. Hard for me to say, but I even enjoyed some of J.D.'s performances. My dislike for him has mellowed over the past year and I can see where INXS made the best choice for them. Marty's version of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" has been knocking around in my mind all day (don't care for Britney), but Marty "made it his own"......when the show is over will be glad to not have to hear that phrase for awhile.

Your point is well taken and I agree with what you've said. I do noticed a lot of the similar stage movements repeated by the others too, I guess my point is the others would rearrange it differently to make them not too noticible (if you don't pay a lot of attention). Somehow Magni's stage style tonight appeared repititious, to a point where me for example, would say "Didn't I see the same thing in the original/last week/2 weeks ago?" Take for example, Magni's "Creep" stage style broke off from the recent 4 performances eventhough it's still him/his style. For example, Lukas's M.Jagger-like strut in his original.. similar to previous weeks'. Although Livin' on a Prayer probably doesn't call for that strut, you notice distinction in both performances. I'm sure you can point out differences in Storm's, Dilana's, and Toby's original and song picked by the show/SN. Well.. of course it's all my personal opinion, this time I happened to have that same thought halfway into Magni's original. And when Tommy pointed that out, I agree with him 100% that both performances looked and felt ... the same.
Yeah, you've voiced my feeling regarding Toby performance too... the pitch is a bit high for me too. Yesterday I realize that's how he liked to sing with his original band when I visited his band's website. A couple or three sounded a bit high (for me), the rest sounded awesome. I was hoping that he would pick a different song, I ABSOLUTELY DIG one his original, 'FireSign'. Oh, I just can't get enough of that song, how I wish he would choose that over 'Throw it Away'. Anyhow.. maybe another original by Toby tomorrow? I could only wish...

I don't think the show gets all that much coverage in the US press at all. It's mostly sites like this or blogs like USA Today's Pop Candy. Other than that, the hometown newspapers of various contestants have done stories. I occassionally do searches on Google news and rarely see any major media web site links.
But I'd be interested to find out if some of her constant downer talk is linked to anything she reads on the Internet.

Perhaps Toby can't take the credit for FireSign, he can't really call a song his original if another member of juke' wrote it, or perhaps he's saving it to save him if he ever really feels threatened.
Dilana has to go this round. I was for her in the beginning but now I am totally off her. I supported Ryan until last week (the climbing on the speakers was a little much for me). I knew he was in for it when he did that stunt. So now I am rooting for Lukas, Magni and Toby, in no particular order.
Home with the flu, so I got to see it all for a change...
Dilana - did a wonderful job with "Behind Blue Eyes". From what I had heard secondhand, I was pleasantly surprised with her original song...it actually reminded me a lot of Oleander and some of the other alt rock bands from 7 or so years ago...
Magni - love Magni. Loved Back in the USSR. I would have expected him to have changed the tempo up some with his original song so that the two didn't appear so similar
Storm - Wow! Wonderful performances, terrfic singer, but she doesn't belong in SN.
Lukas - I'll be the dissenting voice - regarding his version of BonJovi's "Living on a Prayer" - WTFWT! Hell, this is a song that I sing along with regularly and I still had trouble figuring out what he was singing. His original was also just okay...
Toby - He had me from "hello" tonight. I thought his cover was solid, and his original had the house rocking!
I think we'll lose Storm or Dilana tommorrow night. I'd be doing the happy dance if we could get rid of Lukas.
I love Magni, He has such a powerful presence. He needs to forget about supernova and just tour with the houseband because it seems like he has much better chemistry with them.
Another hour of my life i wish i had back........who needs sominex when you have Magni,Toby,Lukas and Storm to bore you to sleep. If Dilana doesn't win i can definitely see her as a solo success.Say what you want about Diplana' but her vox are very strong.Im sure this girl goes through a carton of smokes a day (not recommended for singers) to get that husky voice and it seems to be working for her. Thought the other original tunes paled in comparison to hers however.
Not sure if this was mentioned but I read a spoiler for last night's performance show, written by someone who attended. He/she wrote an extremely accurate synopisis of what I eventually saw on TV last night. I found it interesting that the spoiler mentioned a particular comment made by Tommy Lee to Lukas after his performance. The gist was that he (Tommy) has always dreamed of having a lead singer like Lukas fronting his band.
Assuming he actually said this, and I have no reason to doubt the spoiler, I find it very telling that the producers had it edited out of the broadcast.
