Rock Star: Supernova picks their final four curlio
 2006-09-06 21:16:46
Television Rock Star: Supernova prepared for a kick *finale next week, naming their final four rockers. All three of the bottom three rockers gave it their all in order to stay, but naturally someone had to go. I was a little suprised at the eventual outcome, but on the other hand it was sort of expected as well. If you missed it, you'll have to wade through the recap!

Brooke Burke said that the votes this time were almost too close to call. She then told Tommy Lee that he looked tired. It seems that Tommy just got in from the Motley Crue - Aerosmith tour, and is looking forward to the Supernova tour. Dave Navarro then congratulated Brooke on her pregnancy. It seems that Brooke is having a little girl. Dave said that what the world needs is another little Brooke Burke running around.

After the recap of last night's performance, Dave addressed everyone saying their originals were amazing and several were instantly memorable. Lukas Rossi said that playing his original in front of the audience when he's used to playing in front of beer bottles and ashtrays was amazing. He was happy he got to share some of his life. Toby Rand said that he is a happy camper because he has played his original in front everyone, and to play with Supernova. Dave asked Toby if he got more comfortable or what. Toby said it's called EVS. The girls in the audience screamed, Toby thanked them and says maybe in 10 years. Toby said he started to think too much, then he thought EVS.

Then Magni got to perform with Supernova on the next new track, "It's All Love." Magni started out playing guitar, then switched, tossing the guitar to a crew member on the side of the stage. It was a good song, and I adore Magni, but he doesn't feel right with the band. Actually he mostly just doesn't feel right with Gilby Clarke. He did good with Jason Newsted, but Magni and Gilby just didn't seem to have the right chemistry.

The rockers were driven to the show tonight in five new Honda Element SC cars. They were greeted by screaming fans on the red carpet. It seems that whoever gets the encore gets a lovely Honda Element SC. But Jason wouldn't say who until after the break. After the break, we first got the news that Dave Navarro and Panic Channel will join the Supernova tour. Then Toby, naturally, got to perform his original "Throw It Away." The performance was a lot like yesterday, just with more singing along from the audience. Before he started singing, he dedicated it to Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, who died earlier this week.

Now we're down to the meat of the night. It seems that all five of the rockers were in the bottom at some point in the voting. First one into the bottom was Storm Large. Storm decided to perform "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd. I was a bit worried, as that was one of my favorite performances last year by Marty. She did good and had the emotion to it, but Marty has an intensity to his performance that Storm just couldn't manage. It was very nice though. At the end, she dedicated it to her mom.

Next into the bottom three was Dilana, who hopped up on crutches. Gilby told her it was one of the gutsiest performances he's seen, which just made me want to hurl. Give me a break, I've heard performers who have broken bones and seriously cut themselves and still managed to get up onstage before going to the hospital. Don't make it sound like the girl was shot or something. Anyhow, she said she hadn't done punk rock and would be doing Cheap Trick (did I miss the bulletin that said Cheap Trick is punk?). Honestly, I've heard Hanson perform "I Want You Want Me" better than Dilana did. She hopped around and hopped onto the shoulders of some beefy guy who looked like a security guard. Supernova gave her a standing ovation.

When it came time for the third person to the bottom, Magni's name was called first, but he's not in the bottom, he gets to sit back down. Toby joined Magni with a spot in the finals next week. That leaves Lukas as the last one into the bottom. Jason asked him if he was surprised. Lukas said it had to happen sometime and this is his night to make a comeback. He played his original again, "Headspin." This performance seemed like it had much more fire in it than yesterday's performance.

Off to decision time, where Gilby tells Storm that they asked her to bring something different and she did by changing up her performances last night. But this was her second time in the bottom three. Dilana meanwhile has been the one to watch, but was again in the bottom three for a second time. Lukas, as it was his first time in the bottom three can go sit back down. This left Tommy to choose between Storm and Dilana. He couldn't do it, so the job was passed to Jason. Jason told them they are both fantastic performers and they respect them as comrades in rock. Storm is going home however.

Dave told Storm he could have picked anyone to rock with, but he picked her for a reason. He meant what he said last night that it was the best song he's heard in two seasons. He said he'll love it when it comes out. Storm told him that he will love it because he'll be playing on it. He said absolutely and Tommy chimed in that he would be playing drums. Dave told her that she may not have won, but they want to back her up. Storm thanked them for making the show, thanked the people for voting and told the other rockers that they are her family.

That makes the final four rockers - Lukas Rossi, Magni, Toby Rand, and Dilana. Am I the only one that finds it strange that the final four are the four who performed original Supernova tracks? This should add fuel to the conspiracy fire, but Storm never got the chance to perform with Supernova, did she? Oh, and how happy are the Magni fans that Magni did not land in the bottom three? You know he was the one with the "handful of votes" between him and... mmm probably Lukas.

By Crikey! It's going to be Tobes.
Game over.
He has had my vote from the beginning.
Aussie's are nothing if not loyal!
He is a great package - solid singer, great performer, catchy songs, good looks, young, sexy and being an Aussie doesn't hurt.
It seems Americans really like anything Australian. Look at the outpouring of grief in the US for poor Steve Irwin. It's really incredible. I don't think majority of Aussies realised just how famous and loved Steve was over there...

I'm with you Kyle!!

Toby rocks - he's is definately the complete package. I mean, lets face it, at this stage of the game, we know they can all sing. It's now a matter of determining who is the best fit for the band. Someone with stage presence, charisma, someone who can work the crowd and interact well with the band - that's TOBY!!

Steve Irwin - R.I.P.

Toby kicks ass, not only can the guy sing, he knows how to rev up the crowd and include them in his performance. When I go to a concert, I want to feel the music and with Toby as Supernova's front man, you can feel his passion for what he's doing on that stage. I just can't picture Supernove with Lukas, he belongs in a punk bank, Dilana has a fantastic voice, but I wouldn't buy tickets to see her, and Magni just doesn't seem like the guy who would fit in with Gilby, Tommy and Jason. They need a front man that will compliment them. They need Toby.

Lukas! Lukas! Lukas! He's gotta be the one to win. He's the only one who can make this band work. With Lukas, Supernova would actually be more appealing.
Only if I were totally drunk or on a heavy dose of antidepressants....

I think that Toby will win, but I'll be happy if anyone other than Lukas wins!

Given what we saw at the Hard Rock on NYE - my guess is that either Lukas or Toby are going to be drunk off their a$$es and the concert is going to SUCK....(same could be said for the concert that we saw...good thing we had won the tickets and not actually paid for them!)

Drama Queen

Good morning all! After perusing all the Guest (and a couple member) posts, I have to say that while the energy is charming, the delusions are painful.

Here it is, the Simon-Cowell no holds barred evaluation of the the final four:

Dilana: She has been losing steam since about the middle of the show. Drama nonwithstanding, her performances have gone from amazing and mesmerizing to solid and mediocre. Dilana is a one trick pony---and once you've seen her 'scary chick' routine a couple of times, it loses it's intensity. I don't think she'd be able to maintain for a 28 city tour. As far as her looks go, while she certainly is distinctive, I don't know that her hard core look is really what three middle aged guys who've all cut their hair reasonably short really want. Her emotional life is clearly a liability. And anyone who thinks her songwriting abilities are anything other than laughable, well, I've got a bridge I want to sell you.

Strength: Distinct voice and look
Weakness: Songwriting and Personal

Magni: No one can talk trash about Magni vocals, as they are always technically perfect. However, his stage presence is bland and his songwriting doesn't seem to make up for it. I don't think anyone can argue that he's not the sort of guy you'd want to work with, which makes his personality a big plus. He's not quite to hearthrob status (though I find him cute) and last night showed how he ages the band.

Strenghts: Vocals and peronal
Weaknesses: Stage presence and songwriting

Lukas: His look is not right for the band. All the make up and mousse is a little too reminiscent of their hair band past . . . something I can imagine them wanting to get away from. His vocals are not superb, and if you don't believe me, then just ask Jason Newstead. However, he seems to have found a performance style that SN likes and they have praised his melodramatic, ear bleeder songs. Personality wise, he has shown himself to be mature and professional, but not always prepared.

Strengths: Stage presence and song writing
Weakness: Look and voice

Toby: Toby's stage presence is by far the youngest and most energetic of the bunch. His look is right for the band because he is the younger hot stud they all imagine themselves to be. Toby's personality has been nothing but laid back and charming throughout the whole process. And while I might find his songwriting cheap and meaningless, the Aussie has shown he can crank out cheap disposable hits, which seems to be what the band wants. His one drawback is his voice, which hasn't quite been up to the more challenging tunes, but shouldn't be a problem for a good sound engineer to work with.

Strengths: Look, Personality, stage Presence, song-writing
Weakness: Voice

It's simple math, folks. Toby has the most going for him in SN's eyes and they're going to pick him. Try not to be such a big baby when your favorite loses. I know I won't waste any tears when Magni (my fave) loses.

Few sidenotes about last night's show:
Maybe I'm a heartless b!tch, but I thought it was ridiculous when Toby did his little salute to the Crocodile Hunter. I mean, Storm dedicating "Wish You Were Here" to her Mom is touching, but dedicating the O-O-O-O-O song to a celebrity who perished in a freak accident who just happens to be from your home country is . . . I don't know . . . a tad inappropriate?

Nice to see that now Brook has announced she's preggers she's keeping the twins covered up. Much more tasteful.

Dilana's rock n roll crutches were ridiculous. She didn't even know how to use them and when she was standing behind them it looked like she was wearing a full length, Zayra styled skirt. Foot injuries . . . the last refuge of those who have been shown up on singing reality shows.

I miss Zayra :(

Peace Y'All!

Great Re-cap!

So we bid Storm farewell, not a surprise really, but at least she went out on a high note. She finally got back to who she is and it showed in her performances, it's just to bad that it was too little too late.

I was very happy that Lukas was in the bottom 3 and I must admit I was holding out hope that he would get the boot, but alas it didn't happen. A girl can dream! hehehe

What a group of male supremacists! A woman would never win this competition because that's not in the cards or what it's all about with "male" rockers. As soon as Dilana started getting really popular (hello how many times was she in the bottom three the whole show--right!) they began to make her look unsupportive, hateful and untalented. Anyone think conspiracy? I bet she was offered some deal with her own band, a contract and record guarantees. (Gave Navarro chills, ughhh.) The sick thing is she's a good actor. I'll never watch these shows ever again. They are fixed and never highlight bands who would actually choose a woman as a "front"'man.'" Hey, of course I believe in conspiracy theories. Haven't you heard of reality? Anyway, I'm not surprised to see her get into the top four--probably part of the deal too.

Yes, she is working the audience, for a sympathy vote! What a joke she carries those crutches with her, there is no attempt to use them? Well, ok, she used them as a prop adding some drama throwing them down for Gilby. If she still has the crutches next week "I'm going to Hurl!"

To me the crocodile hunter was annoying...but the man died, I don't see a problem with Toby honoring his memory, Irwin was a world wide celebrity. I didn't take it as a publicity stunt, it felt sincere to me. Storm did her salute with taste, whispering it at the end of her song.

Here's to Toby or Magni for the win!

Storm Rocks, and I'll be buying her CD before I buy Supenova's. But in the end she probably wasn't right for them. Though I was hoping Dilana would have gone home instead. That was the fourth underwelming performance in a row. How much credit did she earn in those first few weeks. Or is Supernova looking for a sound that I just don't get?

elimination video:
Storm made a very eloquent exit speech. She said she might not 'fit' the band, but that doesn't mean she doesn't 'RULE'. She has class.

The the pity parties candidate spews some crap. Dilana says she's had serious injuries before and her body is her own pharmacy. She doesn't need therapy for her leg? She is mentally healing her leg right now, and she's pretty sure she'll be walking in the next week.
{So it was all for show and the sympathy vote! I told ya so!}

Lukas/skunk talked about it being his first time up there defending himself. He was glad to sing his original again. He would rather do his own again then sing someone else's song up there. Says he is confident he can win. But there is also a lot of great talent, There are only four left. No room to hide, so, come out, come out!

Nicole, great round up of the strengths and weaknesess. I think you're pretty much spot on. To me it's down to Toby and Lukas, pretty much for the reasons you listed.

Toby has great energy and the girls love him. Gilby liked his songwriting too. But I don't know if his voice is quite the right fit.

Lukas also has a good and unique energy. Could be a really good songwriter if he were a little more prepared. Now if he could just change his vocal style slightly so I could understand about half of what he's singing, I'd love him. He's shown he can do that, but the past couple of weeks he's gone back to full on gravely/mumbly voice.

But I wouldn't knock the Steve Irwin tribute. I'm not from Australia, but don't underestimate how big of a shock that was down there and how much coverage it's getting (heck, his death even got a lot of US coverage). I think it speaks volumes that the prime minister offered his family a state funeral, which they declined.

All this Lukas bashing really gets on my nerves. The main thing that Lukas has going for him is he can take a song and make it his own, not just a keroke version. He is the only performer who has taken classic songs and complete re-vamped them. Also, I think it took a lot of guts for him to sing his original song last night during the elimination rather than a song everyone knew. I hope Lukas wins. He's been my favorite from the start.

Toby will most likely win because he attracts the ladies. Lukas should have gone home last night just for singing the same song again instead of trying to do something different--isn't that what Supernova dogged Magni for because his performaces weren't different?? Lukas is a gremlin skunk and should have been gone many. many weeks ago! Dilana is still the best performer/singer and since I'm not a fickle, fairweather fan, I will say she's been my choice from the beginning. She looked and sounded the best in front of Supernova and it has been the only song I really liked of theirs.

I guess it all comes down to their favorite "boy" who will attract the female fans----EVS!!!!

Never thought I would see "the vocal purity of Lucas" in the same sentence ...

To quote Webster:
purity - the state of being pure
pure - free from harshness or roughness and being in tune

I know that I'm not the only one that thinks Lukas has NO vocal purity.

It's makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Dilana is not where it's at. She's grungy and needs a bath. Supernova wants a guy to head their band, you can tell that EASILY. Lukas might be too extreme, but he would make me buy tickets to see them in concert. Magni is great and will do great on his own, I feel TOBY is their headliner. I've seen alot of concerts and the final five will all do great, but I seriously don't think they want a chick head singer. I wish Toby and Lukas could both be picked. The lame thing with the crutches showed your desperation Dilana, come on you've put your own feet in your mouth enough, leave the rest of your body out of this. Rock On!!
