Rock Star: Supernova picks their final four curlio
 2006-09-06 21:16:46
Television Rock Star: Supernova prepared for a kick *finale next week, naming their final four rockers. All three of the bottom three rockers gave it their all in order to stay, but naturally someone had to go. I was a little suprised at the eventual outcome, but on the other hand it was sort of expected as well. If you missed it, you'll have to wade through the recap!

Brooke Burke said that the votes this time were almost too close to call. She then told Tommy Lee that he looked tired. It seems that Tommy just got in from the Motley Crue - Aerosmith tour, and is looking forward to the Supernova tour. Dave Navarro then congratulated Brooke on her pregnancy. It seems that Brooke is having a little girl. Dave said that what the world needs is another little Brooke Burke running around.

After the recap of last night's performance, Dave addressed everyone saying their originals were amazing and several were instantly memorable. Lukas Rossi said that playing his original in front of the audience when he's used to playing in front of beer bottles and ashtrays was amazing. He was happy he got to share some of his life. Toby Rand said that he is a happy camper because he has played his original in front everyone, and to play with Supernova. Dave asked Toby if he got more comfortable or what. Toby said it's called EVS. The girls in the audience screamed, Toby thanked them and says maybe in 10 years. Toby said he started to think too much, then he thought EVS.

Then Magni got to perform with Supernova on the next new track, "It's All Love." Magni started out playing guitar, then switched, tossing the guitar to a crew member on the side of the stage. It was a good song, and I adore Magni, but he doesn't feel right with the band. Actually he mostly just doesn't feel right with Gilby Clarke. He did good with Jason Newsted, but Magni and Gilby just didn't seem to have the right chemistry.

The rockers were driven to the show tonight in five new Honda Element SC cars. They were greeted by screaming fans on the red carpet. It seems that whoever gets the encore gets a lovely Honda Element SC. But Jason wouldn't say who until after the break. After the break, we first got the news that Dave Navarro and Panic Channel will join the Supernova tour. Then Toby, naturally, got to perform his original "Throw It Away." The performance was a lot like yesterday, just with more singing along from the audience. Before he started singing, he dedicated it to Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, who died earlier this week.

Now we're down to the meat of the night. It seems that all five of the rockers were in the bottom at some point in the voting. First one into the bottom was Storm Large. Storm decided to perform "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd. I was a bit worried, as that was one of my favorite performances last year by Marty. She did good and had the emotion to it, but Marty has an intensity to his performance that Storm just couldn't manage. It was very nice though. At the end, she dedicated it to her mom.

Next into the bottom three was Dilana, who hopped up on crutches. Gilby told her it was one of the gutsiest performances he's seen, which just made me want to hurl. Give me a break, I've heard performers who have broken bones and seriously cut themselves and still managed to get up onstage before going to the hospital. Don't make it sound like the girl was shot or something. Anyhow, she said she hadn't done punk rock and would be doing Cheap Trick (did I miss the bulletin that said Cheap Trick is punk?). Honestly, I've heard Hanson perform "I Want You Want Me" better than Dilana did. She hopped around and hopped onto the shoulders of some beefy guy who looked like a security guard. Supernova gave her a standing ovation.

When it came time for the third person to the bottom, Magni's name was called first, but he's not in the bottom, he gets to sit back down. Toby joined Magni with a spot in the finals next week. That leaves Lukas as the last one into the bottom. Jason asked him if he was surprised. Lukas said it had to happen sometime and this is his night to make a comeback. He played his original again, "Headspin." This performance seemed like it had much more fire in it than yesterday's performance.

Off to decision time, where Gilby tells Storm that they asked her to bring something different and she did by changing up her performances last night. But this was her second time in the bottom three. Dilana meanwhile has been the one to watch, but was again in the bottom three for a second time. Lukas, as it was his first time in the bottom three can go sit back down. This left Tommy to choose between Storm and Dilana. He couldn't do it, so the job was passed to Jason. Jason told them they are both fantastic performers and they respect them as comrades in rock. Storm is going home however.

Dave told Storm he could have picked anyone to rock with, but he picked her for a reason. He meant what he said last night that it was the best song he's heard in two seasons. He said he'll love it when it comes out. Storm told him that he will love it because he'll be playing on it. He said absolutely and Tommy chimed in that he would be playing drums. Dave told her that she may not have won, but they want to back her up. Storm thanked them for making the show, thanked the people for voting and told the other rockers that they are her family.

That makes the final four rockers - Lukas Rossi, Magni, Toby Rand, and Dilana. Am I the only one that finds it strange that the final four are the four who performed original Supernova tracks? This should add fuel to the conspiracy fire, but Storm never got the chance to perform with Supernova, did she? Oh, and how happy are the Magni fans that Magni did not land in the bottom three? You know he was the one with the "handful of votes" between him and... mmm probably Lukas.

Dilana knows how to work it and she can definitely rock. She fits with Supernova and they are secure enough to pick a woman.

The difference between Lukas and Toby is the difference between MTV and VH1. Supernova's choice is going to depend on which channel they'd rather be seen.

Dave said it the first or second week that Lukas feels like he has his foot in the future of music. Toby doesn't have a diverse enough character to change the perception of the band.

Last year was the same situation Marty's modern vibe(MTV) or JDs classic feel (VH1).

It isn't about who's better, it's about who fits with the image they want to present.

Dilana is who she is and Supernova would be smart to pick her. She is that edge that they need to show their versitility. She's awesome and can do anything they want her to do. She really wants this gig.

I'm with you. I think Dilana should have gone home, not Storm. Dilana can say Thank You all she wants but it isn't coming across as sincere. She thought she had this wrapped up at the beginning. Last year, I was a Marty fan but saw JD come around as the year progressed. As this season progressed, I see Toby and Magni outperforming Dilana and see her shrinking. I certainly home Supernova does not pick her for their frontperson. I will be disappointed if they do.

I have to give props to Dilana for speaking her mind. I am so tired of all this Politically Correctness in the media.
What saddens me is that she was put into the postion of apologizing for what was on her mind.
Hey, it's a competition and let the best singer win out. Unfortunately, some of the previous people were voted off because the band criticized a singer in the review and thereby prejudiced some of the voters.
Lukas will win because he's shown all the qualities of a front man.......Dilana would be my choice if it were a female band. I'll be shocked if they choose her.

Good morning all! After perusing all the Guest (and a couple member) posts, I have to say that while the energy is charming, the delusions are painful.

Here it is, the Simon-Cowell no holds barred evaluation of the the final four:

Dilana: She has been losing steam since about the middle of the show. Drama nonwithstanding, her performances have gone from amazing and mesmerizing to solid and mediocre. Dilana is a one trick pony---and once you've seen her 'scary chick' routine a couple of times, it loses it's intensity. I don't think she'd be able to maintain for a 28 city tour. As far as her looks go, while she certainly is distinctive, I don't know that her hard core look is really what three middle aged guys who've all cut their hair reasonably short really want. Her emotional life is clearly a liability. And anyone who thinks her songwriting abilities are anything other than laughable, well, I've got a bridge I want to sell you.

Strength: Distinct voice and look
Weakness: Songwriting and Personal

Magni: No one can talk trash about Magni vocals, as they are always technically perfect. However, his stage presence is bland and his songwriting doesn't seem to make up for it. I don't think anyone can argue that he's not the sort of guy you'd want to work with, which makes his personality a big plus. He's not quite to hearthrob status (though I find him cute) and last night showed how he ages the band.

Strenghts: Vocals and peronal
Weaknesses: Stage presence and songwriting

Lukas: His look is not right for the band. All the make up and mousse is a little too reminiscent of their hair band past . . . something I can imagine them wanting to get away from. His vocals are not superb, and if you don't believe me, then just ask Jason Newstead. However, he seems to have found a performance style that SN likes and they have praised his melodramatic, ear bleeder songs. Personality wise, he has shown himself to be mature and professional, but not always prepared.

Strengths: Stage presence and song writing
Weakness: Look and voice

Toby: Toby's stage presence is by far the youngest and most energetic of the bunch. His look is right for the band because he is the younger hot stud they all imagine themselves to be. Toby's personality has been nothing but laid back and charming throughout the whole process. And while I might find his songwriting cheap and meaningless, the Aussie has shown he can crank out cheap disposable hits, which seems to be what the band wants. His one drawback is his voice, which hasn't quite been up to the more challenging tunes, but shouldn't be a problem for a good sound engineer to work with.

Strengths: Look, Personality, stage Presence, song-writing
Weakness: Voice

It's simple math, folks. Toby has the most going for him in SN's eyes and they're going to pick him. Try not to be such a big baby when your favorite loses. I know I won't waste any tears when Magni (my fave) loses.

Dead on, O queen of the grape soda spray!!

"the Aussie has shown he can crank out cheap disposable hits, which seems to be what the band wants."

I do believe this to be true. I really believe Supernova is a six-months-and-out commitment from Tommy, Jason, and Gilby, so anyone they pick needs to have immediate charisma and crowd appeal. All of "the future of the band..." arguments don't hold up. This isn't a band with a history or a future. Its a six month cash machine - and they will pick whomever they think can ring the register the loudest...

GRRRRRRR! I hate Dilana and Lukus so much, you can't understand Lukas's singing and Dilana keeps going on with this whole poor me act its annoying.
Now Storm is gone and i'm so ticked off Magni, Storm, Toby and Ryan were my faves and now 2 of them are gone.

Thanks to Dilana it actually felt like i was watching a rock show for once last night.Thought the punk-version of that Cheap Trick tune f--king cranked ! She even started to burst into some metal yells near the end of the song (God Bless Her For That) .Toby "lets run around the theatre during every performance" Rand is getting a bit annoying. However,i think he could become a decent front man if he'd tone it down a tad.Storm Porn's original the best Daves ever heard in the last 2 seasons ???? Navarro is tone deaf and its pretty obvious if you look at the bands he's played in.Magni is good but is not dangerous enough and tends to bore.Thought Lukas "Little Eddie Munster" Rossi showed some stones (balls) last night when he chose to do his own song again...rather hear that than Creep for 20,000th time.I could see this finale going anyones way i wouldn't want to place a bet on it.They've all won by getting this exposure, even that fruit in week one who sang that horrid "Duran Duran" song is probably getting laid now because he was on tv ?????

No surprises last night, though I loved most of Storms performances....I was surprised though that Lukas to my mind came out unprepared and sang the same original that he'd sung the night before....I don't see how that shows guts, it just shows his cocky arrogance and thinking that he didn't need to be prepared...

I don't like Lukas at all, but does anybody else have that *^$ lyric 'you make my head spin' going through their head....it's driving me nuts...it was the only line in the song that was understandable....was that supposed to be a tribute to his mother???

I don't think that Toby's tribute to Steve Iriwin was a stunt at all. Most Australians are really very saddened by the loss of the great Aussie ambassador and the feelings are heartfelt :(

Toby will win because he is the real deal. What you see is what you get. With more experience he will grow into a really great performer. I would love to hear him sing some Aussie tunes. What about Working Class Man or Long Way to The Top?
Magni is also genuine but not quite enough grunt for the band. He will have a great career now.

The other two are too contrived for my liking, although Lucas would be a great frontman for a punk, goth glamour band! Dilana can - ummm - puss orf beck to Efrica

Yes lukas's song and Magni's song both have been spinning in my head all day.

It makes it interesting though because most of the times that are the songs that you can get hooked on while it's not a generic sing-along song. As I said also magni's song and especially the line "You burn the bridges in front of me" keeps playing over and over in my head.

To manage that a sentence is sticking in people's head is in my opinion a better achievement than an "O-O-O-O" lyrics and then Dave giving a compliment that everyone could sing along with him after the second verse. hello the letter Oh isn't even a word, even "we will rock you." from queen had more words in it and people could sing along after the second verse.

But the question is what the band wants, just like last year the different artists will have different effects on the band.

close your eyes when Lucas sings and he has an instantly recognisable voice...that's true...it is the same quivering vibrato that the forgettable Demis Roussos gave us in the seventies...he made my head spin but his projection was better and I could understand the lyrics, even in Greek!

Interesting point that Dilana wasn't limping when she was driving. She's a good singer with good stage presence but her ego got the better of her and that dropped her in the eyes of her fans. She seems a little conceded to me Lukas, you can't understand the words when he sings and his look just doesn't fit Supernova, they don't have chemistry. I don't think Jason likes him too much. Magni sings pretty well but it doesn't look like he connects with Gilby the way he does with Tommy and Jason. Toby sings well and has good stage presence and Dave, Gilby, Tommy and Jason like him. The only set back is that he doesn't (with the exception of last two performances) steal the show. He's young, energised and popular so I'd think he is the favourite now.

I'm beginning to love Toby's new found attitude. He's taken on the whole 'EVS' thing and I love it. He just fits so well with the Supernova feel that they have projected so far. And come on, Tommy Lee and an Aussie Boy - Bring It On Baby!

Toby is flannable. I think that's what this band needs.

Flannable: "Doable" in a flannie, an evs 'tude, a real "bloke". (There's a lot more to it, but that's the essential deffinition.)

Excuse me, but why do they even put women in the competition when it's clear they don't want a woman? Please someone tell me why? Now, if there ever is a next time and if I do watch this dreadful charade of a competition, maybe, just maybe, they will have a band with female members choosing their lead.

I agree with the tribute to Irwin. He was a great educator and conservationist. So, thank you, to all who noticed.
PS I enjoy reading all of the comments. Very interesting study of the many desires and impressions of the somewhat less impressionable viewing audience.

The band is complete with a male lead singer, putting a women with these great guys can only bring drama and bad rumors by the press later on down the road.

guitar pick, this is exactly what I am saying but with a totally different analysis. WHY put women in a competition when it's clear it's going to be a male band??? The other point I'd like to address is, come on, you have never seen and heard of drama going on with other "completely composed of" male rock bands? With Groupies, with drugs, with mania abounding? I think you are missing the point, but that's OK because you are, at least, addressing the issue in some fashion--God, sociology teachers are insane! Why do I torture myself?

I dunno, was it clear this would be an all-male band at the beginning? I'm not so sure.

I may seem clear to you now, but for much of the first few weeks it seemed Dilana was the front runner and that the band had no problem envisioning her as the lead singer. I think that's changed a bit recently due to her decline and the emergence of Toby, and Lukas as gotten a boost recently too. Not that he was ever on the band's sh*tlist.

I agree with friedtrout and urge him/her to register and join the conversation!

(picking up Will's slack since he's in disposed)

It was pretty clear to me from the beginning (as in when they announced the members of Supernova) that a female singer wouldn't work. Groupies, sex tapes, misogynist lyrics . . . these are the things that have made Tommy, Gilby and Jason famous. You hire a female lead singer and the whole nature of the band changes. Someone here (maybe somewhere else) mentioned Debbie Harry and Chrissy Hynde as awesome female front people for rock bands. While I agree about the awesomeness, I would say the Blondie and the Pretenders, respectively, are best known for their lead singers and the band has drifted into obscurity.

I can't imagine any of boyz wanting the same thing happening to them. It's always been about THE BAND . . . and they're clearly looking for an equal, not a stand out singer.

Interestingly, in retrospect, I think that a girl could have fronted INXS. A totally different sort of band---solid musicians backing up a 'big personality' (how I mourn Michael Hutchinson . . . so many dead aussies). A 'big personality' girl could have stepped right into that role. However, JD was the only truly 'big' one last season and won by default.

Why they included women? Did you see Zayra's bode? Or Storm's implants? All I'm saying is that, for the most part, the women were probably cast as eye candy and most likely knew going in that they weren't really in the running. Hearing Storm's post-boot interviews confirms that she was not heartbroken or surprised to leave. She approached the whole she-bang as an easy way to self promotion.

I propose a band for next season that requires a woman. Perhaps the go-go's will dump Belinda Carlisle. Has Hole cut ties to Courtney Love?

I would love to see next year the auditions being for the entire band, not just the vocalist. It would be great to get to be a part of handcrafting the end product through voting, and it would be a great launch pad for already established groups. That way the public could decide on a dominantly fe/male group or an even mix.

Just re-reading the comments that imply Dilana is faking her injury. My fiance once had a torn calf muscle and could not walk for six weeks. He took a couple more months to heal. He has a massive scar running down his calf where they fixed him.

She thinks she'll be walking around in a week? If she really has torn a calf muscle, it seems to me she'll be lucky to be completely healed by the NYE concert...
