Rock Star: Supernova picks their final four curlio
 2006-09-06 21:16:46
Television Rock Star: Supernova prepared for a kick *finale next week, naming their final four rockers. All three of the bottom three rockers gave it their all in order to stay, but naturally someone had to go. I was a little suprised at the eventual outcome, but on the other hand it was sort of expected as well. If you missed it, you'll have to wade through the recap!

Brooke Burke said that the votes this time were almost too close to call. She then told Tommy Lee that he looked tired. It seems that Tommy just got in from the Motley Crue - Aerosmith tour, and is looking forward to the Supernova tour. Dave Navarro then congratulated Brooke on her pregnancy. It seems that Brooke is having a little girl. Dave said that what the world needs is another little Brooke Burke running around.

After the recap of last night's performance, Dave addressed everyone saying their originals were amazing and several were instantly memorable. Lukas Rossi said that playing his original in front of the audience when he's used to playing in front of beer bottles and ashtrays was amazing. He was happy he got to share some of his life. Toby Rand said that he is a happy camper because he has played his original in front everyone, and to play with Supernova. Dave asked Toby if he got more comfortable or what. Toby said it's called EVS. The girls in the audience screamed, Toby thanked them and says maybe in 10 years. Toby said he started to think too much, then he thought EVS.

Then Magni got to perform with Supernova on the next new track, "It's All Love." Magni started out playing guitar, then switched, tossing the guitar to a crew member on the side of the stage. It was a good song, and I adore Magni, but he doesn't feel right with the band. Actually he mostly just doesn't feel right with Gilby Clarke. He did good with Jason Newsted, but Magni and Gilby just didn't seem to have the right chemistry.

The rockers were driven to the show tonight in five new Honda Element SC cars. They were greeted by screaming fans on the red carpet. It seems that whoever gets the encore gets a lovely Honda Element SC. But Jason wouldn't say who until after the break. After the break, we first got the news that Dave Navarro and Panic Channel will join the Supernova tour. Then Toby, naturally, got to perform his original "Throw It Away." The performance was a lot like yesterday, just with more singing along from the audience. Before he started singing, he dedicated it to Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, who died earlier this week.

Now we're down to the meat of the night. It seems that all five of the rockers were in the bottom at some point in the voting. First one into the bottom was Storm Large. Storm decided to perform "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd. I was a bit worried, as that was one of my favorite performances last year by Marty. She did good and had the emotion to it, but Marty has an intensity to his performance that Storm just couldn't manage. It was very nice though. At the end, she dedicated it to her mom.

Next into the bottom three was Dilana, who hopped up on crutches. Gilby told her it was one of the gutsiest performances he's seen, which just made me want to hurl. Give me a break, I've heard performers who have broken bones and seriously cut themselves and still managed to get up onstage before going to the hospital. Don't make it sound like the girl was shot or something. Anyhow, she said she hadn't done punk rock and would be doing Cheap Trick (did I miss the bulletin that said Cheap Trick is punk?). Honestly, I've heard Hanson perform "I Want You Want Me" better than Dilana did. She hopped around and hopped onto the shoulders of some beefy guy who looked like a security guard. Supernova gave her a standing ovation.

When it came time for the third person to the bottom, Magni's name was called first, but he's not in the bottom, he gets to sit back down. Toby joined Magni with a spot in the finals next week. That leaves Lukas as the last one into the bottom. Jason asked him if he was surprised. Lukas said it had to happen sometime and this is his night to make a comeback. He played his original again, "Headspin." This performance seemed like it had much more fire in it than yesterday's performance.

Off to decision time, where Gilby tells Storm that they asked her to bring something different and she did by changing up her performances last night. But this was her second time in the bottom three. Dilana meanwhile has been the one to watch, but was again in the bottom three for a second time. Lukas, as it was his first time in the bottom three can go sit back down. This left Tommy to choose between Storm and Dilana. He couldn't do it, so the job was passed to Jason. Jason told them they are both fantastic performers and they respect them as comrades in rock. Storm is going home however.

Dave told Storm he could have picked anyone to rock with, but he picked her for a reason. He meant what he said last night that it was the best song he's heard in two seasons. He said he'll love it when it comes out. Storm told him that he will love it because he'll be playing on it. He said absolutely and Tommy chimed in that he would be playing drums. Dave told her that she may not have won, but they want to back her up. Storm thanked them for making the show, thanked the people for voting and told the other rockers that they are her family.

That makes the final four rockers - Lukas Rossi, Magni, Toby Rand, and Dilana. Am I the only one that finds it strange that the final four are the four who performed original Supernova tracks? This should add fuel to the conspiracy fire, but Storm never got the chance to perform with Supernova, did she? Oh, and how happy are the Magni fans that Magni did not land in the bottom three? You know he was the one with the "handful of votes" between him and... mmm probably Lukas.

After watching the latest original Supernova tune...well, Magni just did not fit with them...

Now I'm thinking that Lukas (whom I still think is awful) does belong with Supernova. As bad as these original songs are, they need a lead singer that you can't understand lyrics when they sing!!
I disagree, I think that Magni DID fit with the band, however I had the feeling that Gilby was the one that wasn't fitting in with the band. It felt like he was in his complete own little world completely not realizing what the other performers were doing on stage. (which in my opinion is a bad thing)

It looked to me that Magni and Jason have played hundred of times before already.

For me Storm has a brilliant career in front of her...she is beautiful and she is a really good singer..is sad that she was eliminated, but also she deserves something much bigger than Supernova.
About who will win the competition? is between Lukas or Toby..Dilana is a bitch and Magni looks so good as to be a rocker.

Lukas fits with this band like a glove (words right from Magni's mouth)... they need a serious writer with the bad writing that has been shown in the Supernova originals, and Lukas can bring that...GO LUKAS!! Another Canadian boy rules Rockstar!!!!

Dilana rocks...by far the best of the bunch. So she's a bitch..who cares? She is the most interesting and orginal of the four. Lukas has an interesting look and style but sometimes seems a little silly not always sincere, poser comes to mind! Go Dilana!

I thought Magni did well with SN and he is by far my fav, but I'm still thinking Toby may be a better fit. If Magni gets the gig you have 4 older guys with families that would appeal to their peers. If SN goes with Toby, you pull in the babe magnet and the teeny boppers. Lukas and Dilana look the part, but I am not sure what they "bring to the table" (Lukas does bring songwriting abilities, though, I'm not sure about the demographics.) Bottom line it comes down to who will sell more tickets and CD's, not who is the best. My guess is Toby.l

If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!

Hey give me a break! Storm would be wasting her time with these guys! Come on, 3 good artists that used to be in som good bands. USED TO BE IN SOME GOOD BANDS! The Storm is just gettin started! She is better off with the exposure she got & bolting. Supernova will be lucky to be opening for her next year, if they haven't burned up in their egos by then....

so many songs,so well done-so little time left. guess what-there is an upcoming actor in the bunch-lukas..the face, the voice, the eyes, not quite sure where he is going-but he is already there. -he has a voice no question about that, but- so much more.the fabulous four-thanks for having the best come to you and and sharing it with all of us.what a great lot of people working together to make the music industry a better place. so....as for the one who is chosen-many think dilana- but she might think she is more important than the boys themselves-looks like maybe toby is the one to get shaped and molded into the spotlight-bringing new light and life, but willing to understand that the boys rule...can't wait to see you all when you get it together. supernova you really do rock.

I enjoyed seeing Tommy rock with Dilana's Cheap Trick song. And I figure from his body language today and over the other shows, that he could not be the one to say bye to Storm...so the most impartial of the 3, Jason did the dubious honors. I would love to see Dilana win. She weathered the witch hunt, and became even more soulful from it. Her original song was the best in writing and meaningful delivery. Lukas did very well with that too. I don't know what the big deal with Toby is. He sings somewhat flat. Doesn't anyone worry about that?I guess singing is secondary. He does milk the female audience though. His original song was very much like the early 80's material(oh Oh)... would have been a great hit then. Magni definitely has been improving, through Tai Chi or ballet may help his clunky movements. Storm is wonderful to watch and hear as a solo artist. And Lukas, well he should be the next Billy Idol/ James Dean persona. He has heart and soul, I think he could go far with the rebel appeal. Clearly, Dilana has the magic, despite the earlier witch hunt, she should prove to be the rightful Nova and bring some incredible original songs to the table that Supernova seem to want. Dilana you definitely shine bright!

lucas rossi is interesting, has the most original stage presence and should win just for the fact that he stripped apart the bon jovi 'contrived and polluted' living on a prayer and made it into a great little ditty.
toby is good, no doubt as a bar band guy, but originality sells and he isnt original. magni is a deadbeat on stage, dilani is just a little too much of a whiner and spent 3 episodes feeling sorry for herself. storm is better on her own.

so like it or not, lucas rossi would be a good frontman for this band. the rest are fine but not a good fit.

Two day's ago I heard Storm sing a bad *song with a killer beat ( which by tommy's full bodied into it reaction - I think he concur's) I am still singing the lines "What the F is ladylike if Ladies like to what the F they want." So I looked it up and...
http://cdbaby.com/cd/stormandballs
it's on a CD!!!

As for the competition..I have only like one of supernova's songs. The rest have pretty much sucked I think they will choose toby because he brings a much needed sexy side young female groupies and the Aussie foreign concept to the American audience.

"Cheers mate"

I agree with the guest that Supernovas songs haven't shone yet. Dilana and Lukas would be an asset to that dilemma. To become a teeny bopper band now would be a drag. So out with Toby. Those bands never seem to be hailed as classic afterwards. Hmmmm.

I was very saddened to learn Steve Irwin's news on Sunday, I'll miss him. Thanks again Curlio for the recap and great website Curlio and Dusty.

It's sad to see Storm leaves. However her career path should divert from SN's. Hard rock does not seem to fit her. Her music career is brighter than it has ever been. I look forward to hearing from her again and I appreciate her efforts and performances these last few weeks that I do watch again and again.

I have to start by asking a question. I thought SN was going to perform the song that they have asked to put lyrics for. I guess maybe we will get to hear that song next week. "It's all Love" seems to have beeen hand-picked by SN specifically for Magni. Now we have seen all 4 finalists performed with SN. Thoughts?

Somehow I feel that damage control is in place for Dilana today. Whether you like Dilana, I think that's a good thing to do because she is a good artist if you can separate all the other stuffs from her music talent. Tonight she did not bring that sad face with her. For the first time in a long time, I got to see a few glimpse of the old Dilana tonight. She didn't start out well, then she was more into it, and was able to rally the crowd, crippled and all. I have to give her credit tonight.

Back to Magni, it's good to see how Magni team with SN. Out of the 4 teamings with SN, I liked Lukas's song best. Dusty brought up an interesting point regarding Magni's performance with SN, please read. I gotta say, 3 out of 4 SN's tracks are just mediocre. I too think Magni did as well as one can be given the song. Relistened to the song and I gotta give credit to Magni for being able to muster in some energy at the end of the song. I'm a fan, whether he wins or not.

Well, only one week left. Hmm.. wonder what I can watch after this is over. I will enjoy next week's show and have fun with it. Great show, great talent. This show attracts talents from all around the world, what else can one ask for.

I'll give you that. Magni and Jason do fit together. But with Tommy and Gilby? EEKS! Fronting the band, Magni looked...well, to quote my husband "white bread"...

Jason is the one member of the band whom I know the most about...his appearance in Supernova is downright puzzling based on what he said about leaving Metallica and Ozzy...Supernova must be an only 28-city commitment...Jason has publically stated (when he left Metallica) that he won't surround himself with alcoholics again, and now he's teamed up with Tommy...it must be very lucrative...

Based on the past two weeks, I'm thinking that Toby is the new frontrunner followed by Lukas.

As I said in my other post, Lukas wouldn't be a bad choice because no one could understand Supernova's bad lyrics!

OK, why do I think Toby will win? Lets see, he's been picked to do a supernova track (OK, so has everyone else in the final four), he has only been bottom three once (Lucas is the only other one to bost this) and he has now had three encores (as far as I recall, that sets him apart)!

He is greatly going to broaden the demographic, as he is a young, single and very attractive. He is very fun, and can make a word go world wide over night (evs) and have his audience singing along to his songs the first time you hear them.

He has my votes.

I am not a big fan of Lucas, however if you close your eyes when you listen to all the male singers, he has the most distinctive recognizeable voice. I think that's what's needed to be a lead singer.
Plus he has the personality to annoy the rest of the band.

Please stop with the "Dilana bashing". Talk about commentary bais. She didn't try to elicit a "you're gutsy Dilana". Gilby told her she was gutsty. She no more had control over that then any of the other commendations SN dished out to anyone else. And never once did she complain about her leg tonight. In fact she still managed to workup the audience. She just tried to perform with the limitations she had by making the best of things with the body guard. I'd like to see you do what she did with a torn calf muscle. Believe me, it's very painful.

Look, they are all talented in their own way. It's just a matter of taste. And as they say, "There's no accounting for taste".

I can't wait to see who wins next week. I'm torn about which one I'd like to see win. There are three I admire very much. But there is also one I've never like from his very first performance to his original song tonight. Yes it's Lukas. I do like how he dedicated it to his mother. But somehow I haven't been able to appreciate his singing talent because I can't understand what he's singing. Maybe if he didn't put his mouth so close to the mic. Or maybe it's different in the live audience. Or maybe I need to go in for a hearing test.

When Lucas performed with Supernova, they truly sounded like a great band. He has the vocal style, range and writing ability to complement the band. Toby is the most well rounded of the four but he lacks the vocal purity of Lucas. For the band to make a sound decision, they should simply play the recording of Lucas singing with them....it should be obvious at that point.
