Rock Star: Supernova does it all once more

Tonight's Rock Star: Supernova seemed to be about repeats. Once again, lusty teens held up "We love Toby" signs. Dilana no doubt pissed off her critics as she proved that the last two weeks of crutches and leg pain was nothing but a farce. And again Magni was trashed by Supernova. The only surprises were Lukas and Paula Abdul. Read on music lovers!
To start off the show, Dilana said that the fans had been given an opportunity to vote for one rocker to come back. She says the two of them have had their differences but she loves him. Ryan Star got the welcome back. He thanked Supernova for the opportunity and wished the rockers good luck. He performed "Back of Your Car." It was a great performance from him. He said that his album, "Dark Horse" is coming out. The first single is "Back of Your Car" which is already available on the rockstar website. Brooke Burke tells him that because he was the fan favorite he gets a new car.
Then we are treated to a clip of how everything has gone for our final four. Lukas Rossi came out strong, Dilana was all intensity. Toby Rand set himself apart while Magni stumbled. Toby meanwhile lost his mojo and Lukas couldn't impress Jason. Dilana was unbreakable. Magni got himself back with an awesome bottom three performance. Lukas finally opened up his throat, and Toby said "EVS" and had fun. Dilana stumbled in the press then came back with determination.
Toby performed first, and actually stayed onstage for his whole performance. That's a first for awhile isn't it? First up was a cover of Karma Police by Radiohead, which was mellow but sung with a nice voice. He then brought Magni up to play with him on "Throw it Away." The crowd sang along even more than last week. Magni had EVS written on the back of his head. He brought the guitar out to Toby and held it in front of him for Toby to play, while Magni kneeled in front of him. Dave Navarro told him that it was like watching a killer rock show. Tommy Lee said it was a nice job. Gilby Clarke felt that Toby was lost at the beginning of Karma Police, but kicked in with his voice and made it great later. Jason Newsted said that Toby generated the most energy in three minutes that they had all summer.
Lukas Rossi had and ultra mellow set. It started with Coldplay's Fix You, for which Lukas has just the perfect voice. I noted that Toby has more female fans on the show as there were a ton of Toby signs but only a couple Lukas signs. It went on to show Paula Abdul (yes, from American Idol) in the audience (leading me to ask "Is that Paula Abdul"). Then Lukas played an acoustic version of Headspin all on his own. It was a beautiful performance. If any of you people who can't understand Lukas didn't understand that one, well there's no hope for you. Dave gave me the answer to my "Is that Paula" question by saying it's nice to know that when Paula Abdul wants to hear some good singing she comes to Rock Star Supernova! He also said he was proud to be part of a show that not only champions unsigned artists but gives them an opportunity to play their original material. And he added that he questioned all season if he could listen to Lukas play for two hours. He would not only listen to him, he'd pay to see it. Tommy said it was cool as hell. Gilby said it's amazing that he's fearless and not afraid to try something new.
Dilana performed a version of the Police hit Roxanne that reminded me a lot of the George Michael cover of the song. It wasn't that great or that weird. I expected something terrible after that portrayal of it in the recap of the webisode! Magni, Toby, and Lukas all joined her onstage to sing backup near the end of Roxanne. She called them her boyfriends. Then for her original she wanted to make clear that Supersoul is a freedom song, not an angry song. It's about moving forward. She was stomping and jumping and running around for the performance. Even on that leg that had the torn calf muscle just two short weeks ago. Yeah, torn calf muscles heal that fast (for those of you not able to get sarcasm through the typed word, this paragraph reeks of it). She went out and hung all over the band, and up into the crowd all the way in back. Dave said he thinks she's awesome and it was smart to get her competitors to sing backup for her. Tommy loved it all saying she's beautiful to watch perform. Jason told her that he would make the boys wear matching outfits. Lukas would have to work on choreography. Gilby enjoys watching her perform every week.
Magni was up last, playing guitar for a wonderfully fun version of Deep Purple's Hush. He temporarily forgot the title of his original When the Time Comes, but that seemed to be more of a language thing I think (he probably thinks in Icelandic or whatever they speak there). I thought it was an awesome performance, as I love his original. Personally I'd like to leave it as I loved him and Supernova hates him, but we'll rehash their overrated opinions. Dave was the nicest, saying that there was a girl there who was literally fanning herself. He said Magni did a killer job with the Deep Purple song. Tommy just hates Magni, saying that he can't remember anything about the original song. Then again I'm sure there are many things that Tommy can't remember, like where he left his brain. Jason likes it, but doesn't think it's as memorable as some of the choruses (but hey, the Macarena was memorable too!). Magni said that he likes it, but it's music and not everyone is supposed to love it (go Magni, give those * a what for!).
At the end, they gave the full ranking. Dilana was first, Toby was second, Lukas was third while Magni was last. Personally I think the Magni fans have just resigned themselves to him not winning. Actually if they think like me they're in the "Supernova isn't fit to wipe Magni's sweaty testicles" catagory. So Magni will end up in the bottom tomorrow and get booted off. Meanwhile, my order for the night is Magni, Lukas, Toby, and Dilana. Why Dilana last? Well if Supernova can stick their heads in the ground and ignore what I consider to be greatness then I'm allowed to do the same for what they consider to be greatness thank you very much.

..."fifteen of the best unsigned rockers in the world"--quote from Brooke Burke.Really ??? Hope for her sake she's reading a script and doesn't actually believe that. Cuckoo....Cuckoo .
meh. It's just hyped up text the producers have her read. They used it a lot early on in the show. It's cheesey, but really what else are they going to say?
"Hey, come watch 15 people who are pretty good or just okay as they compete for the next 13 weeks to front a band led by three middle age rock stars: a washed up drummer, a bass player who quit Metallica and a guy who was in Guns n Roses for only three years and had nothing to do with writing any of their songs."

Good morning everybody!
So sad, only one more show and our summer is over. So sad, stupid Mike Boogie won BB Allstars. So sad, EVERY SINGLE M*THAF*CKING SONG WAS A REPEAT LAST NIGHT!!!!!! EVERY ONE!!!!
If the house band is the best thing about Rockstar as a show, the limited song selection and endless repeats are by far the worst (but the overly-complicated official website comes in a close second). Really, I had a hard time getting excited about the next to final performances because there was nothing new.
However, I've managed to muster up an opinion, so here it is:
Toby: I saw nothing last night that swayed me from my steadfast belief that, deservedly or not, Toby Rand will win Supernova. Sure, they put him first, in the 'unpimped' spot, but I think that's so he ends up in the bottom three tonight and then wins. "Oh, the drama!" Yawn......... We've now heard the O-o-O-o-O-o song three times in the past week. I predicted last week that the fifth time I heard it would make me want to stab my ears until they bled. Turns out, I was wrong. It only took three times before Mr. Nicole had to remove all sharp objects from my vicinity.
Lukas: Holy Glitter eyeshadow, Skunkman! Looks like Lukas busted out the Wet 'n Wild Prom Night make-up for tonights show. I did notice that his skunk-hawk looks surprisingly soft for all the product he must need to use to get it to stand up straight. I wonder what he uses. Oh, you might have noticed that I'm not commenting on the music. That's because I was bored hearing the same old song again----even if it was "Headspin" unplugged. I've heard Lukas compared to Eric Cartman of South Park fame for singing ability, and let's just say last night I heard the resemblence. "Iiiiii'mmmmmm ssssaaaaiiiiilllllliiiiiiinnnnnngggg aaaaawwwwaaayyyy . . ."
Dilana: God bless Curlio and the broom she rode in on!!!! I was yelling and screaming at the TV "SHE FAKED!" You simply do not go from unable to walk, must be carried around by security guards to STOMPING AND DANCING!!!!! in one week. Physically unpossible. Roxanne angered me to no end. She took a tragic song about a misguided prostitute and turned it into a showcase for herself and her vocal acrobatics. Blech! I hope Magni's wife beats her up for calling the guys her 'boyfriends'. "Supersoul" has, does and always will suck. That is all.
Magni: Finally, something worth listening too. I agreed with Dave (I know, I know, *shakes head*, I'm not proud) that the Deep Purple song was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Perhaps my preference for Magni reveals my classic rock prediliction: He doesn't do any of this alt. rock, emo BS like Lukas or any of this hookie, cross-over hip hop waving hands in the air like Toby. He just gets up there and sings like a real musician. I say if you're good, you don't need all the smoke and mirrors to make you seem better (Dilana, I'm looking at you and your extreme piercings/dreadlocks). His original was so-so. Seemed better last week. I think it's a good song to show off his vocals, not so much of an insta-hit that the lazy boys of Supernova can easily co-opt.
Final word on why Magni is the best: You can tell the houseband loves him. All band members were smiling and having a blast during his song. And, frankly, I'd put more stock in the houseband's opinions than Tommy, Gilby, Dave or Jason.

Great Re-cap!
So this was the final night to wow SN and us. I must say I wasn't WoWed by all.
Toby is Toby, he did a good job and surely is in this thing to the end. First or second place for him I believe because he has what SN doesn't have, youth and a huge young female following.
Nicole I noticed the glitterific eyes myself, sadly, at least for me that was the most memorable aspect of Lukas' performances. Personally I was bored with both performances. While it's great to be able to understand him, it helps if what he is singing is attention worthy.
Hop-a-long Dilana, I liked Roxanne, I still don't like her original. Her UTube video still haunts my dreams and everytime she sings, I think back to it, and just can't take her seriously because of it.
WTF is wrong with Tommy Lee? (loaded question I know!) Magni was the best last night. His set seemed like a mini concert, his chemistry with House Band was awsome, his vocals amazing! What's sad is even if he isn't in the bottom 2 tonight, he still won't win!
My top to bottom:
Magni
Toby
Lukas/Dilana
|
|
| |
|
|
|
|
|
Dilana is too contrived, especially off stage, which she thinks she never leaves, nonetheless the woman is not shy of talent. Her Roxanne was fantastic. I don't think she will win, but more because of offstage antics.
Magni is a near miss, he can bring it but he doesn't all the time. Toby Rand is interesting, there was one week I thought he should have withdrawn himself his performance was so bad, but he has been bringing it for a while and is possibly the leader of the pack. A bit of a poser and pop kind of guy, he might make financial sense for the group. He can definitely sing.
Lukas Rossi, I think he has played this whole show the best. Sang anything they threw at him, just laughed at the ridiculous antics and behavior and comments of Dilana and brought different aspects of his game week after week. He didn't demonstrate he can do one thing well, he demonstrated a vast range and was a rockman on stage. I don't know why, with all his make-up he seemed to be more sincere than the rest, he sang with emotion. You believed him when he sang, you felt that he lived the words he sang and to me that is rock. I don't know that he will win though. I think how it works is once it is down to final three, viewers votes go out the window and Supernova decides, this may be his saving grace.

I agree with Nicole and Freezzznnn about Magni and the House Band. Last night Dusty and I were talking about HB, I said I'd love to find out from them their opinions of the final four - the real opinion not the nicely edited version. I'm fairly certain that Lukas micromanages, and Dilana is... well we all know as they've been not so happy with her before. Toby's probably relaxed. But I think that Magni is overall probably the person you would most want to work with as he's not just all about him. He lets other member of the band shine, gets along well with others, and is usually just a happy mellow guy. Of course that translates as "Vanilla" onstage for most people who are so used that whole fire and angst crap that grunge brought on and has been adopted by the emo groups of today. I'll take my Double Vanilla Magni Latte over their vodka and gin crap anyday.

She faked an injury. FAKED.
Why? if you have a torn calf muscle, you'll be happy that you could support your weight A LITTLE on it after a week or two. If the shoes were 'helping' her, the support of her shoes would have to support her hips, bypassing the muscles in her leg.
Stamping on the floor (even fake stamping) would hurt like heck with a torn calf muscle, even after two weeks.
Well, to put it mildly, I know all about injuries like this. I doubt she was injured at all, but she might have has a minor muscle pull.
The deal with her is I don't like her singing , the rest is up folks and their personal standards. Just think, she showed up with "decorated crutches" and now is completely mobile. The amout of learned helplessness and learned thoughtlessness in our society is barely imaginable to me. Oh, Well!
Hopefully they can all eat better after this, I have enjoyed the season and hope for another. My peeps, here, love ya, mean it!!! Will

OK show. Sadly my favorite part was seeing Ryan Star again because it was a suprise. They all sounded good but it seemed like it had nothing to do with the final outcome. I think my pick goes to Lukas though I haven't really been a fan. I just think he would make it the most interesting. I think Magni has the most potential but I don't think that's what they are looking for otherwise they would have kept Ryan Star around. My top 4.

I have watched the show from woe to go just like last season INXS show and have not been disappointed. I know alot of manure goes on these boards but at least we are being entertained!
I would sooo much prefer to watch ROCKSTAR than Idol or ig Brother or sooo many other reality shows. I know what we see at home is edited to make it palatable for me the viewer and I am smart enough to see the performers for who they really are...and they to me are the most talented people you're gonna see in a while.
I know we are surrounded by talented people, we only have to look to our neighbour to see they do great things...but there is only one winner....
Mangi: Wont win because he doesn't have the X factor
..but..having said that, he looked awesome behind Toby tonight. They should front a band...
Dilana: I loved Dilana at first and knew she would make it this far but I wonder if they can deal with her narcassism and poor me tendencies...it took away from her performances and made her look contrived.
Lukas - I thought from week 1 that he would win. He is certainly a great performer and reminds me of the lead singer of placebo but i dont think he fits supernova as he is tooo indivdual. i would buy his album more than if he was with sup0er nova as I would think they would cork his creative juices.
Toby- Fits the band completely. A mans man band man but id young enough and hot enough that the chicks still like him. He has his own style but still plyable to fit the bill. He is an Aussie and lets try to bring SUPERNOVA back to Earth mate!!!

Lukas is the only one who has brought something different to the stage every week. I find him mesmerizing to watch and he's the only one I haven't flipped channels on because the performance lost my interest. They are all good performers and singers but my vote is for Lukas.

I don't know what they are hearing, but I like to hear the music, not watch someone in Beetlejuice makeup, zombie dancing (that goes for Lukas and dilana). Magni is the only one I'd buy tickets to see. If Toby wins there would be too many screaming teens for me to actually go to the concert. I've been to concerts where the pre pubescent girls screamed every time the singer made any movement. It was excruciating. You can't hear the concert through the high pitched pig squeals. Loved your commentary! LOL
Here's my top four in order: Magni, Toby, Lukas, Dilana.
I don't know ....but I have this feeling....that they are going to pick TWO! I don't know...I think they are torn and can't decide between the three of them and they will be taking two singers on tour? What do you think? Here's hoping it's Magni and Toby.

Plus an IP ending in .au leads me to the conclusion that it's actually Australians who think they're the center of the universe. I initially deleted your first reaction as I found it to be just looking for a fight. But I decided that if you wanted to look like an idiot, I'm perfectly willing to help you out.
First of all, I want to stress that I do not think all Australians are evil self-centered patriotic ostriches with their heads in the sand. However I'd say that 90% of the reactions from Aussies that I've seen online have been "TOBY ROCKS! HE'S AUSSIE! AUSSIE RULES" with absolutely no credit given to the other contestants. Meanwhile, Americans have embraced Lukas or Magni or Dilana or Toby - none of whom are American, and have voted their non-American asses into the finale (along with the rest of the world naturally). Naturally there is an element of national pride for the country of the person's origin. But to promote that person and exclude everyone else, and then attack Americans for thinking they are the center of the universe is just... making an *of yourself.

Yeah, I thought that was just hanging out there too, Curlio, waiting for someone to jump on it. I tried to restrain myself but . . . I can't.
So, I see an attempt here to try to equate Rockstar: Supernova with American Foreign policy. This boggles my mind to such a point that I won't even begin to point out what's wrong with that. I will, however, say this:
Stop talking about OUR TV shows! Rockstar belongs to the good ol' U S of A and any pinko commie * who says different should stick the old stars and stripes up their butt.
Is that the reaction you were hoping for, Hazel?
In all honesty, everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong it is. Americans just as much as Fosters-chugging, funny-talking Aussies. I kindly suggest that if you want your opinion to be received (as it was about five posts down from this one) that you allow all of our opinions to peacefully coexist with it.
Oh, and watch out for stingrays.

I realized last night, Magni looks a little like my 1st boyfriend. Oh sweet memories...anyway loved Magni as usual. I feel like of all the musicians on the show he and the house band have the best future in show business. I wonder if part of the reason the house band in going on tour with SN is to get people to people to the show! I still feel like it's Toby's gig, but we will have to see.

I am waving my Canadian Flag today. Lukas should win this. When you watch back through the recap of the season last night, the band gets into him when he is performing. Gilby pumping his fist ... tommy with his arms up in the air and Jason ... well who know what Jason is doing. Anyways... I would be disappointed in Dilanna - anyone who replaces humming in songs with her name is no rockstar... Toby I could buy, but has his original song clouded people to the fact that his voice has been weak on his last two covers and is only good when he is belting it out. Magni... Well he is in his own world... I don't think it is Supernova's but he is having tons of fun with the Houseband. Once again, I hope Lukas becomes the lead singer, but can live with Toby or Magni. Down with Dilana!

I like Magni but he clashes with Tommy who's probably afraid that he will be surpassed (and rightfully so). I think they will go with Toby, a safe bet who can bring in the girls so Tommy can relive his motley crue days.
Dilana is just there for the chick factor. Lukas is a freak. SN will not go with either of the two since they're too different in style.

Amen sister! You can knock my personal preference for music all you want, because a) it's a PREFERENCE and b) frankly I could care less if someone doesn't like the music I do.
However, to lump it all together and say it's a "typical arrogant American" thing is just dumb. And not only shows arrogance but also ignorance.

Hmmm... It's really hard for me to guess the outcome here. I am old enough to remember when Tommy Lee and the Crue first came out, and had their first album (OK, I was 13!).
These Supernova guys come from a different music time than many of the posters here (and watchers of Rockstar as well). So it's interesting to read these posts and see people say SN is stupid if they don't pick so and so.
If I were one of the SN guys I'd be looking for the singer that:
a) Can entertain a crowd and keep their attention for a full album/2hour concert
b) Get along with the band. All of these guys have had to deal with extra large egos (especially Gilby w/ Axl)
c) Write lyrics or at least contribute lyrical input. There are MANY singers who sing songs written primarily by another bandmember. Some singers don't write at all. Some might say Elton John was successful, and Bernie Taupin wrote almost everything Elton sang.
d) Sing well. While having an incredible voice often helps, being a rock singer doesn't demand that you sing well. Just sounding different or even just sounding good with the band works. Heck, I've heard many singers over the last 30 years that couldn't "sing" but sounded great with their band.
I will state that I think it would be better to give the singers more songs to choose from. A singer wants to choose a song that will show off their voice, not make them self conscious of it. I saw several truly talented singers go home because the viewing audience didn't connect due to the song. The artist knows what works for them, why have some singers suffer with a so-so song while other luck out with a perfect pick?
So going by that criteria, and based on all season (not just the final performance show), my opinions are:
Toby: Good singer, has moments of truly great singing. Likeable guy, handsome enough for the ladies, manly enough for the guys. Never screwed up, had some solid performances. Absolutely nothing wrong with him - the safest pick among the final 4. Most likely the winner if SN wants the safe pop/rock route to success.
Lukas: Lukas looks the part of a rockstar, and he should - since it's obvious to me that carefully crafted over years of looking in the mirror and posing. I smile every time I see him because he is definitely not another ordinary singer. I just don't connected to what he does. He just tries to hard to separate himself while also trying to keep from looking like he's trying. He seemed aloof, and that could be interpreted as him trying to keep away from drama, or just too self-absorbed to care about anyone else.
He has shown that he can sing, possibly better than any other guy in the show. Too bad he chooses not to so often. I honestly think he could do a fair Freddie Mercury impersonation if he wanted to (that's high praise from me). But he rather grumble his lyrics. He is more entertaining to watch than Magni, roughly on par with Toby (in a completely different way) longshot for SN
Magni: Much like Toby, he seems completely likeable. I would love to hang out with either of these guys. Although they claim that Magni is a Iceland Pop Star, he sound best to me when he does the "heavy" thing. I think he could do something like a cross between Metallica, Soundgarden and Nirvana. I might buy that. But if he sounds like most of his performances, I'd pass. Doesn't sound original enough compared to what I have heard for the last 15 years. But he COULD surprise me later on. Possible but doubtful.
Dilana: Man where do I start? Two days after the first performance show I could only remember 2 performers: The makeup wearing glam-goth guy, and the scary girl with that smoky husky voice. I later fell for Storm. She had the looks, the voice, and the stage presence to keep me watching. But she's gone (sniff), so I back to the only one who stood out and kept me entertained (that IS what it's all about!). Dilana started off strong. She had the voice, the stage presence, the look, and the ability to mix it up with the SN guys. Week after week she had strong performances. I was thinking she had a strong shot at winning. Then we saw what appeared to me to be a series of carefully orchestrated clips showing Dilana in a less-than-pleasing-light. To me it was not a smart move to mention names to a reporter like she did, but it WAS crafted to trap the singers. She is just the only one that got snagged. I don't really believe that NO ONE ELSE made any errors of that magnitude through the whole series, but she is the one they chose to highlight (lowlight?). I've seen, heard, and read about much more famous singers in much bigger bands doing much worse things, so to me this is nothing. It very likely was her first time in that type of situation (seldom do local singers get full on interviews like that). All this fabricated drama caused her to doubt where she wouldn't have otherwise.
I see this akin to having runners run a race, and when one gets a sizeable lead, the race organizers start throwing things at the leader, causing them to falter and fall behind, as the other slower runners catch and pass them. Once you've had people throwing stuff at you, you're going to wonder when they'll do it again.
So then she tears a muscle and has crutches one week, then moves normally the next week. Could be fake, could be real. I've torn a muscle (verified by doctor) and been walking around normally in 4-5 days on more than one occasion. If I was in the finals fighting for my future, could I get through with some painkillers and desire? If my leg was less than broken, you bet I could.
Dilana is the best ROCKSTAR, she has what it takes. Rough around the edges, but who wants polished? This IS Rock and Roll, right??
In summary, Magni is great, but just doesn't fit. Toby seems the safest choice, Lukas the extreme choice, and Dilana is the best mix of personality, attitude and talent.
I'd go Dilana, but only the guys in Supernova know what they want from a singer.
