Rock Star: Supernova does it all once more curlio
 2006-09-12 22:30:56
Television Tonight's Rock Star: Supernova seemed to be about repeats. Once again, lusty teens held up "We love Toby" signs. Dilana no doubt pissed off her critics as she proved that the last two weeks of crutches and leg pain was nothing but a farce. And again Magni was trashed by Supernova. The only surprises were Lukas and Paula Abdul. Read on music lovers!

To start off the show, Dilana said that the fans had been given an opportunity to vote for one rocker to come back. She says the two of them have had their differences but she loves him. Ryan Star got the welcome back. He thanked Supernova for the opportunity and wished the rockers good luck. He performed "Back of Your Car." It was a great performance from him. He said that his album, "Dark Horse" is coming out. The first single is "Back of Your Car" which is already available on the rockstar website. Brooke Burke tells him that because he was the fan favorite he gets a new car.

Then we are treated to a clip of how everything has gone for our final four. Lukas Rossi came out strong, Dilana was all intensity. Toby Rand set himself apart while Magni stumbled. Toby meanwhile lost his mojo and Lukas couldn't impress Jason. Dilana was unbreakable. Magni got himself back with an awesome bottom three performance. Lukas finally opened up his throat, and Toby said "EVS" and had fun. Dilana stumbled in the press then came back with determination.

Toby performed first, and actually stayed onstage for his whole performance. That's a first for awhile isn't it? First up was a cover of Karma Police by Radiohead, which was mellow but sung with a nice voice. He then brought Magni up to play with him on "Throw it Away." The crowd sang along even more than last week. Magni had EVS written on the back of his head. He brought the guitar out to Toby and held it in front of him for Toby to play, while Magni kneeled in front of him. Dave Navarro told him that it was like watching a killer rock show. Tommy Lee said it was a nice job. Gilby Clarke felt that Toby was lost at the beginning of Karma Police, but kicked in with his voice and made it great later. Jason Newsted said that Toby generated the most energy in three minutes that they had all summer.

Lukas Rossi had and ultra mellow set. It started with Coldplay's Fix You, for which Lukas has just the perfect voice. I noted that Toby has more female fans on the show as there were a ton of Toby signs but only a couple Lukas signs. It went on to show Paula Abdul (yes, from American Idol) in the audience (leading me to ask "Is that Paula Abdul"). Then Lukas played an acoustic version of Headspin all on his own. It was a beautiful performance. If any of you people who can't understand Lukas didn't understand that one, well there's no hope for you. lol! Dave gave me the answer to my "Is that Paula" question by saying it's nice to know that when Paula Abdul wants to hear some good singing she comes to Rock Star Supernova! He also said he was proud to be part of a show that not only champions unsigned artists but gives them an opportunity to play their original material. And he added that he questioned all season if he could listen to Lukas play for two hours. He would not only listen to him, he'd pay to see it. Tommy said it was cool as hell. Gilby said it's amazing that he's fearless and not afraid to try something new.

Dilana performed a version of the Police hit Roxanne that reminded me a lot of the George Michael cover of the song. It wasn't that great or that weird. I expected something terrible after that portrayal of it in the recap of the webisode! Magni, Toby, and Lukas all joined her onstage to sing backup near the end of Roxanne. She called them her boyfriends. Then for her original she wanted to make clear that Supersoul is a freedom song, not an angry song. It's about moving forward. She was stomping and jumping and running around for the performance. Even on that leg that had the torn calf muscle just two short weeks ago. Yeah, torn calf muscles heal that fast (for those of you not able to get sarcasm through the typed word, this paragraph reeks of it). She went out and hung all over the band, and up into the crowd all the way in back. Dave said he thinks she's awesome and it was smart to get her competitors to sing backup for her. Tommy loved it all saying she's beautiful to watch perform. Jason told her that he would make the boys wear matching outfits. Lukas would have to work on choreography. Gilby enjoys watching her perform every week.

Magni was up last, playing guitar for a wonderfully fun version of Deep Purple's Hush. He temporarily forgot the title of his original When the Time Comes, but that seemed to be more of a language thing I think (he probably thinks in Icelandic or whatever they speak there). I thought it was an awesome performance, as I love his original. Personally I'd like to leave it as I loved him and Supernova hates him, but we'll rehash their overrated opinions. Dave was the nicest, saying that there was a girl there who was literally fanning herself. He said Magni did a killer job with the Deep Purple song. Tommy just hates Magni, saying that he can't remember anything about the original song. Then again I'm sure there are many things that Tommy can't remember, like where he left his brain. Jason likes it, but doesn't think it's as memorable as some of the choruses (but hey, the Macarena was memorable too!). Magni said that he likes it, but it's music and not everyone is supposed to love it (go Magni, give those * a what for!).

At the end, they gave the full ranking. Dilana was first, Toby was second, Lukas was third while Magni was last. Personally I think the Magni fans have just resigned themselves to him not winning. Actually if they think like me they're in the "Supernova isn't fit to wipe Magni's sweaty testicles" catagory. So Magni will end up in the bottom tomorrow and get booted off. Meanwhile, my order for the night is Magni, Lukas, Toby, and Dilana. Why Dilana last? Well if Supernova can stick their heads in the ground and ignore what I consider to be greatness then I'm allowed to do the same for what they consider to be greatness thank you very much.

I have watched every episode of this season's Rock Star and have to say that as much as I think all four of the finalists are very talented, Supernova will pick the singer that best suits their band.

When I listen to Magni, I know I am hearing a truly gifted performer. He is also a very well balanced person with his head on straight. He won't win this competition simply because he is not edgy enough, but he will go on to have a stellar career in the music industry - go Magni!

Toby is not as talented as Magni, but he draws in the audience. He doesn't seem to have much emotional depth - perhaps due to being fairly young with not as much life experience as the others. His song is nice but I can't see Supernova signing 'oh, oh, oh, oh' type music. For that reason I think they will pass on Toby. Toby will do well with his band back at home.

Dilana has stage presence and knows how to bring a song to the stage, but I question her range. She is very careful with song selection leading me to believe that she might not be comfortable stepping out of her zone. Lately she has seemed to be very nervous and on edge. The pressure is too much for her and since her song writing skills are at a novice level, she should not be the lead singer for Supernova.

That leaves Lukas, who I have watched very closely. He is sooo laid back and comfortable in his own skin. He definitely has the personality to front Supernova. His song writing ability is unquestionably in the top ranks. The only worry I have is that he still likes to constrict his voice from time to time. If he is able to control it, and only do it when it works with the song, as he did last night, then I believe he is the best choice.

I hope no one thinks I was bashing anyone as that was not my intention. I just wanted to present my opinion.

It was like that at last week's conclusion show as well. I wondered if Billy Idol's old hair/makeup person has found a new job with Lukas...

tommy lee.. oh man - did i want to jump thru the tele last nite and smack him! i can't believe what he said about magni's song... can any one of you remember anything about any of the supernova songs? yeah - i thought not!

really, what was tommy there for at all... did he ever give a critique that meant anything? other than wanting to just shag the hot chicks... whatever... total useless waste of space. the only one of the 3 SNers i give any worth to is jason - he actually seems to care (and know!) about the music! not the eyeliner, not the looks... the music. and isn't that what we are all here for?

i will keep track of magni for sure. as for SN, no way... can't see it. i've found some of magni's old stuff online - a moti sol has some good ska stuff, rock stuff. but i would say magni has shown that he is a wicked singer and part of the band too... he rocks.

and yeah, toby and magni together looked pretty good last night! they should think of hooking up after...

goodbye Supernova! Just got this from Rollingstone.com via e-mail alert:

--------------

JUDGE RULES IN FAVOR OF THE ORIGINAL SUPERNOVA BAND

A San Diego judge has ordered the producers of this season's CBS reality show "ROCK STAR: SUPERNOVA" to change the name of its on-air supergroup, SUPERNOVA.
The ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed last month by the California punk band Supernova against CBS Broadcasting. Also named in the suit was Mark Burnett
Productions and CBS' version of Supernova: MOTLEY CRUE's TOMMY LEE, JASON NEWSTED of VOIVOD and former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist GILBY CLARKE. The musicians were however dropped as defendants late last month at the request of Supernova's prosecution team. The judge's decision will prevent the show from "performing rock & roll music, or recording, or selling rock & roll music recordings under the same [name], pending a trial of this action on its merits or until otherwise ordered by the court." "Rock Star" wraps up tonight -- look out for
our coverage and an interview with the winner in our Rock Daily blog. The heretofore band formerly known as Supernova kicks off an American tour December 31st in Las
Vegas.

...answer...because the world is over you...yeah. finished...you're not the centre of the frickin universe! Get that and you will get better!
You do know America is the most diverse place in the world, right? That is such a knuckle headed thing to say! Would you go to a barbecue and insult the host, if you did, you just might not get a barbecued shrimp or at extreme a beer poured over your head.

Well, in America you can think and say the most immature and naive crap you want, but at some point you get isolated and people cut you off or you wallow in the dirt till you find another bottom dweller.

If you truely feel the way you do, well go ahead, and use your American invented TV and your American invented internet and just show us, yeah that's it show us big time.

See, you've won heck you could celebrate and go line dancing in your western bar, American of coarse or maybe you are a jock and could play american basketball.

nah, that's the wording of the Rollingstone.com piece. I would have gone with something more like The Washed-Up Rockers Formerly Known as Supernova.

Or mabye ChevyNova.

Yeah, I thought that was just hanging out there too, Curlio, waiting for someone to jump on it. I tried to restrain myself but . . . I can't.

So, I see an attempt here to try to equate Rockstar: Supernova with American Foreign policy. This boggles my mind to such a point that I won't even begin to point out what's wrong with that. I will, however, say this:

Stop talking about OUR TV shows! Rockstar belongs to the good ol' U S of A and any pinko commie * who says different should stick the old stars and stripes up their butt.

Is that the reaction you were hoping for, Hazel?

In all honesty, everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong it is. Americans just as much as Fosters-chugging, funny-talking Aussies. I kindly suggest that if you want your opinion to be received (as it was about five posts down from this one) that you allow all of our opinions to peacefully coexist with it.

Oh, and watch out for stingrays. ohhh.
As an Australian, I am very offended with your last comment.
I can't believe that you could stoop so low.

Supernova has some decision to make.

Do they want to be a heavy rock band (as their CV's suggest)...a pop rock band...or an avant-garde band. Line this up with the final contenders and you cover the range, and then some.

Toby, is a pop rock lightweight...nothing wrong with that but can he change and move on from "O,o,O,o,OOo" ?

Magni has all the cred of a hard rocker, both the drive and the voice, shame about the stage presence, not enough sneering insolence nor FU attitude...he could raise SN from out of the bland, if their originals are anything to go by.

Dilana, lover her or hate her, has got a great voice and quite a stage presence. She would be a good fit...it's just...well.... Could SN really put up with her attitude of stage?

Lukas, what a mix, my head is still spinning, and I like it, now that I understand his lyrics...probably had the most depth of all the originals. He certainly comes into the avant-garde category with his vocal style, I can't think of anyone at the moment who has a vocal style and a stage presence quite like him...Can anyone remember Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull?
Could SN change enough to support and encourage him further, I think not.

It's been fun

Dave, you know of coarse that CBS f-ed up during the show and show the winner ahead of time. You must restore your own credibility in this. Fans know now that the fix was in, and such pretence in not quickly forgiven.

Are you sure you're not an Australian? Anyway, as the magority of the tv shows and music in Australia comes from America I don't see why Australians bag them so much. We allow ourselves to be influenced by their opinions all the time. If you really felt that way why would you be here, on an American site?

I also do not understand how many people who post here are bagging Supernova, WHY are you bothering then? If you think TL, JN and GC are outdated foggies, why do you even care who sings for them?

I started watching the show because of the three pre determined band members. They have proven themselves many times past to have what they are looking for.

Now, about the actual episode above (which after all is what I actually come here to discuss) I wasn't sure, so I shut my eyes in case I wasd imagining it, but I could understand every word Lucas sung. I finally understand why he has gotten so far. I was very impressed and, like Dave Navarro, am no longer questioning if I could listen to him for two hours. I think the final four are all fantastic. Patriotically I'm still going for Toby, but if SN come to Australia, I'll buy a ticket regardless as each of these awesome singers turn the band into their own, and it's amazing.

Several of us remember Jethro Tull quite well. There's a big difference. Ian Anderson could sing clearly and enunciate. That's why Tull could do the really cool storytelling songs.

Lukas...well, I cringed in pain when he sang Bittersweet Symphony. Blech!

I like several of the emo groups. Lukas does not strike me as such, he just strikes me as channelling Kurt Cobain (and that is NOT A COMPLIMENT coming from me).

Dude, the internet is an international thing if you havent noticed, it's generated from america but not just FOR it. Dissapointing finale, I knew as soon as Toby got the boot that Lukas would get it. He showed very little emotion as did the band members and for a worldwide extravaganza it was very anti-climatic. That reporter chick who leaked the winner about 2 weeks ago got it spot on and as soon as I heard it I sunk in my seat. He's good and querky, but Toby's got more potential, personally. Anyway now they should make a show for band name suggestions.

I personally think it is sad that Supernova did not have the balls to choose a female lead! Rock and I love it, being an 80's chick, is primarily lead by males and male bands in general, this was an opportunity for something new to happen in the world of Rock, but Tommy said it best when he said "Toby, your a boy!" What crap is that!

And you wonder why so many teenagers listen to rap and hip hop - at least they give women the chance to sing and be powerful....

That's alright guys, she is going to blow you out of the water - all on her own! That girl can rock, she is beautiful and powerful and she can sing...really sing!

Your loss boys!
