Tonight's Rock Star: Supernova seemed to be about repeats. Once again, lusty teens held up "We love Toby" signs. Dilana no doubt pissed off her critics as she proved that the last two weeks of crutches and leg pain was nothing but a farce. And again Magni was trashed by Supernova. The only surprises were Lukas and Paula Abdul. Read on music lovers!
To start off the show, Dilana said that the fans had been given an opportunity to vote for one rocker to come back. She says the two of them have had their differences but she loves him. Ryan Star got the welcome back. He thanked Supernova for the opportunity and wished the rockers good luck. He performed "Back of Your Car." It was a great performance from him. He said that his album, "Dark Horse" is coming out. The first single is "Back of Your Car" which is already available on the rockstar website. Brooke Burke tells him that because he was the fan favorite he gets a new car.
Then we are treated to a clip of how everything has gone for our final four. Lukas Rossi came out strong, Dilana was all intensity. Toby Rand set himself apart while Magni stumbled. Toby meanwhile lost his mojo and Lukas couldn't impress Jason. Dilana was unbreakable. Magni got himself back with an awesome bottom three performance. Lukas finally opened up his throat, and Toby said "EVS" and had fun. Dilana stumbled in the press then came back with determination.
Toby performed first, and actually stayed onstage for his whole performance. That's a first for awhile isn't it? First up was a cover of Karma Police by Radiohead, which was mellow but sung with a nice voice. He then brought Magni up to play with him on "Throw it Away." The crowd sang along even more than last week. Magni had EVS written on the back of his head. He brought the guitar out to Toby and held it in front of him for Toby to play, while Magni kneeled in front of him. Dave Navarro told him that it was like watching a killer rock show. Tommy Lee said it was a nice job. Gilby Clarke felt that Toby was lost at the beginning of Karma Police, but kicked in with his voice and made it great later. Jason Newsted said that Toby generated the most energy in three minutes that they had all summer.
Lukas Rossi had and ultra mellow set. It started with Coldplay's Fix You, for which Lukas has just the perfect voice. I noted that Toby has more female fans on the show as there were a ton of Toby signs but only a couple Lukas signs. It went on to show Paula Abdul (yes, from American Idol) in the audience (leading me to ask "Is that Paula Abdul"). Then Lukas played an acoustic version of Headspin all on his own. It was a beautiful performance. If any of you people who can't understand Lukas didn't understand that one, well there's no hope for you. Dave gave me the answer to my "Is that Paula" question by saying it's nice to know that when Paula Abdul wants to hear some good singing she comes to Rock Star Supernova! He also said he was proud to be part of a show that not only champions unsigned artists but gives them an opportunity to play their original material. And he added that he questioned all season if he could listen to Lukas play for two hours. He would not only listen to him, he'd pay to see it. Tommy said it was cool as hell. Gilby said it's amazing that he's fearless and not afraid to try something new.
Dilana performed a version of the Police hit Roxanne that reminded me a lot of the George Michael cover of the song. It wasn't that great or that weird. I expected something terrible after that portrayal of it in the recap of the webisode! Magni, Toby, and Lukas all joined her onstage to sing backup near the end of Roxanne. She called them her boyfriends. Then for her original she wanted to make clear that Supersoul is a freedom song, not an angry song. It's about moving forward. She was stomping and jumping and running around for the performance. Even on that leg that had the torn calf muscle just two short weeks ago. Yeah, torn calf muscles heal that fast (for those of you not able to get sarcasm through the typed word, this paragraph reeks of it). She went out and hung all over the band, and up into the crowd all the way in back. Dave said he thinks she's awesome and it was smart to get her competitors to sing backup for her. Tommy loved it all saying she's beautiful to watch perform. Jason told her that he would make the boys wear matching outfits. Lukas would have to work on choreography. Gilby enjoys watching her perform every week.
Magni was up last, playing guitar for a wonderfully fun version of Deep Purple's Hush. He temporarily forgot the title of his original When the Time Comes, but that seemed to be more of a language thing I think (he probably thinks in Icelandic or whatever they speak there). I thought it was an awesome performance, as I love his original. Personally I'd like to leave it as I loved him and Supernova hates him, but we'll rehash their overrated opinions. Dave was the nicest, saying that there was a girl there who was literally fanning herself. He said Magni did a killer job with the Deep Purple song. Tommy just hates Magni, saying that he can't remember anything about the original song. Then again I'm sure there are many things that Tommy can't remember, like where he left his brain. Jason likes it, but doesn't think it's as memorable as some of the choruses (but hey, the Macarena was memorable too!). Magni said that he likes it, but it's music and not everyone is supposed to love it (go Magni, give those * a what for!).
At the end, they gave the full ranking. Dilana was first, Toby was second, Lukas was third while Magni was last. Personally I think the Magni fans have just resigned themselves to him not winning. Actually if they think like me they're in the "Supernova isn't fit to wipe Magni's sweaty testicles" catagory. So Magni will end up in the bottom tomorrow and get booted off. Meanwhile, my order for the night is Magni, Lukas, Toby, and Dilana. Why Dilana last? Well if Supernova can stick their heads in the ground and ignore what I consider to be greatness then I'm allowed to do the same for what they consider to be greatness thank you very much.
