Rock Star: Supernova does it all once more curlio
 2006-09-12 22:30:56
Television Tonight's Rock Star: Supernova seemed to be about repeats. Once again, lusty teens held up "We love Toby" signs. Dilana no doubt pissed off her critics as she proved that the last two weeks of crutches and leg pain was nothing but a farce. And again Magni was trashed by Supernova. The only surprises were Lukas and Paula Abdul. Read on music lovers!

To start off the show, Dilana said that the fans had been given an opportunity to vote for one rocker to come back. She says the two of them have had their differences but she loves him. Ryan Star got the welcome back. He thanked Supernova for the opportunity and wished the rockers good luck. He performed "Back of Your Car." It was a great performance from him. He said that his album, "Dark Horse" is coming out. The first single is "Back of Your Car" which is already available on the rockstar website. Brooke Burke tells him that because he was the fan favorite he gets a new car.

Then we are treated to a clip of how everything has gone for our final four. Lukas Rossi came out strong, Dilana was all intensity. Toby Rand set himself apart while Magni stumbled. Toby meanwhile lost his mojo and Lukas couldn't impress Jason. Dilana was unbreakable. Magni got himself back with an awesome bottom three performance. Lukas finally opened up his throat, and Toby said "EVS" and had fun. Dilana stumbled in the press then came back with determination.

Toby performed first, and actually stayed onstage for his whole performance. That's a first for awhile isn't it? First up was a cover of Karma Police by Radiohead, which was mellow but sung with a nice voice. He then brought Magni up to play with him on "Throw it Away." The crowd sang along even more than last week. Magni had EVS written on the back of his head. He brought the guitar out to Toby and held it in front of him for Toby to play, while Magni kneeled in front of him. Dave Navarro told him that it was like watching a killer rock show. Tommy Lee said it was a nice job. Gilby Clarke felt that Toby was lost at the beginning of Karma Police, but kicked in with his voice and made it great later. Jason Newsted said that Toby generated the most energy in three minutes that they had all summer.

Lukas Rossi had and ultra mellow set. It started with Coldplay's Fix You, for which Lukas has just the perfect voice. I noted that Toby has more female fans on the show as there were a ton of Toby signs but only a couple Lukas signs. It went on to show Paula Abdul (yes, from American Idol) in the audience (leading me to ask "Is that Paula Abdul"). Then Lukas played an acoustic version of Headspin all on his own. It was a beautiful performance. If any of you people who can't understand Lukas didn't understand that one, well there's no hope for you. lol! Dave gave me the answer to my "Is that Paula" question by saying it's nice to know that when Paula Abdul wants to hear some good singing she comes to Rock Star Supernova! He also said he was proud to be part of a show that not only champions unsigned artists but gives them an opportunity to play their original material. And he added that he questioned all season if he could listen to Lukas play for two hours. He would not only listen to him, he'd pay to see it. Tommy said it was cool as hell. Gilby said it's amazing that he's fearless and not afraid to try something new.

Dilana performed a version of the Police hit Roxanne that reminded me a lot of the George Michael cover of the song. It wasn't that great or that weird. I expected something terrible after that portrayal of it in the recap of the webisode! Magni, Toby, and Lukas all joined her onstage to sing backup near the end of Roxanne. She called them her boyfriends. Then for her original she wanted to make clear that Supersoul is a freedom song, not an angry song. It's about moving forward. She was stomping and jumping and running around for the performance. Even on that leg that had the torn calf muscle just two short weeks ago. Yeah, torn calf muscles heal that fast (for those of you not able to get sarcasm through the typed word, this paragraph reeks of it). She went out and hung all over the band, and up into the crowd all the way in back. Dave said he thinks she's awesome and it was smart to get her competitors to sing backup for her. Tommy loved it all saying she's beautiful to watch perform. Jason told her that he would make the boys wear matching outfits. Lukas would have to work on choreography. Gilby enjoys watching her perform every week.

Magni was up last, playing guitar for a wonderfully fun version of Deep Purple's Hush. He temporarily forgot the title of his original When the Time Comes, but that seemed to be more of a language thing I think (he probably thinks in Icelandic or whatever they speak there). I thought it was an awesome performance, as I love his original. Personally I'd like to leave it as I loved him and Supernova hates him, but we'll rehash their overrated opinions. Dave was the nicest, saying that there was a girl there who was literally fanning herself. He said Magni did a killer job with the Deep Purple song. Tommy just hates Magni, saying that he can't remember anything about the original song. Then again I'm sure there are many things that Tommy can't remember, like where he left his brain. Jason likes it, but doesn't think it's as memorable as some of the choruses (but hey, the Macarena was memorable too!). Magni said that he likes it, but it's music and not everyone is supposed to love it (go Magni, give those * a what for!).

At the end, they gave the full ranking. Dilana was first, Toby was second, Lukas was third while Magni was last. Personally I think the Magni fans have just resigned themselves to him not winning. Actually if they think like me they're in the "Supernova isn't fit to wipe Magni's sweaty testicles" catagory. So Magni will end up in the bottom tomorrow and get booted off. Meanwhile, my order for the night is Magni, Lukas, Toby, and Dilana. Why Dilana last? Well if Supernova can stick their heads in the ground and ignore what I consider to be greatness then I'm allowed to do the same for what they consider to be greatness thank you very much.

How does the show work tomorrow? Do they do a normal elimination in the first hour and then pick the winner in the second hour? I must admit I didn't watch last year, so I'm curious to how it will take two hours to develop a better opinion of who should win then they have developed over the last few months...

I thought Tommy really let-out a cheap shot at the end with Magni. They really want him in that bottom 3

Toby and Magni gave good performances, but Lukas and Dilana were terrific. Magni's original song is not as good as the others, and though he has great voice, he is not as entertaining as the others. I don't get the nit-picking over Dilana's injury or why the writer of this article is so eager to knock her. It seems a little childish. Write what you want, Dilana's my favorite, but I think Toby will probably be chosen and is probably the best to front the band. However they are all good and they are all winners

Goo, yes, tomorrow night starts with a normal elimination round (though bottom two instead of bottom three, I think), then the final three performa and supernova makes their final pick. If I recall correctly, that's pretty much what they did last year with INX.

I was actually semi-impressed by Dilana's vocals on "Roxanne," though I think it comfirmed something I had suspected after seeing some of her old videos on youtube, which were much more pop rock than hard rock. Her scratchy vocals are a bit of a put on just to win the job (but I could be talking out of my a** as I haven't heard anything she's done recently. The youtube videos are a few years old). I don't recall her vocals being quite that smooth all year, but listen to the difference between "Roxanne" and her original song. Totally different styles.

I think Magni did stumble a bit, though I agree Tommy was being a bit harsh. I liked his original. But I think it's obvious Jason's the only one in Supernova who likes Magni. I think he'll be in the bottom two tomorrow and will be booted off immediately.

It's a bit hard for me to pick a winner this year, or at least care. I just don't feel a rooting interest for anyone like I did last year with Marty. I guess Magni would be the closest, but I would agree his vocals are what SN is looking for.

I thought Lukas gave the strongest overall performance tonight. Both songs were good. I liked his acoustic original much better than his full-band version because I could actually tell what he was singing most of the time. The Coldplay cover was OK.

I still don't like Dilana's original. Sure, Tommy may be able to remember it, but that doesn't make it good. I really don't like her vocals on it.

Toby did OK with Radiohead. His original is catchy, but not my cup o' tea.

So I'll go with Magni getting the boot first tomorrow. My guess is Toby and Lukas will get the top two spots in voting and Lukas will win the job.

About Dilana's injury. Look at the shoes she was wearing....lot of support there.
She was amazing. I still think she has a shot, now, but I would bet on Lukas or Toby.

She faked an injury. FAKED.

Why? if you have a torn calf muscle, you'll be happy that you could support your weight A LITTLE on it after a week or two. If the shoes were 'helping' her, the support of her shoes would have to support her hips, bypassing the muscles in her leg.

Stamping on the floor (even fake stamping) would hurt like heck with a torn calf muscle, even after two weeks.

I really enjoyed tonight's performances. I was most impressed with Lukas and Dilana. I think her singing was sublime. Lukas did a great job with the coldplay song and did something new unlike the others with his original song so kudos. Toby was fine. I thought he sang Karma Police nicely especially the rousing crescendo at the end. Magni is just unable to convincingly display passion. He always appears to holding something back. Also, playing with a guitar on stage means he is often looking down at the instrument instead of out at the audience so he doesn't connect. His own original is mediocre - not bad - not great. I see Lukas, Dialna, and Toby in a dead heat heading into tomorrow nights show and am really looking forward to it.

at this point, any album released by these rockers on their own will be better than Super Nova's. SN sort of doesn't deserve the talent.

Absolutely GREAT recap. Magni was wonderful. His original song WAS the best. I loved his cover and his interaction with the Houseband. He is so great that he has no ego and let the members of the HB shine along with him. Magni won't win, but he has won me as a new fan due to his exposure on SN. I probably will not buy a CD from Supernova, but will definitely buy whatever Magni puts out. PLEASE do not disappear from view for months (like Mig). Put something out for those of us who have come to love you and your little bald head......(I really like Magni if you can't tell.)

It was good to see Ryan and great to see him win a car. (The top 4 should have all received cars. Last year the top three won cars. Is this another incident of the show or the sponsors cheapness?) I have bought Ryan's CD, "Songs from the Eye of An Elephant". It is very good, but maybe not for everyone, great instrumentals--piano, guitar and lots of Angst.

I was surprised by Lukas. He can really sing. Maybe I can see some of his appeal to others. Like it has been posted, his charisma appeals mostly to anyone under 30 and I am way past there. If he had sung all season like he did tonight, I might have been converted.

Toby gave a couple of good performances. I do think that he has the female vote. Can't disagree that he is a very handsome guy--kind of makes me want to move Down Under. (They also have my fave--Hugh Jackman). Maybe Toby should consider a movie career.

Dilana, I don't want to trash her, but her antics the past few weeks have left a sour taste in my mouth. I thought that her Roxanne was interesting, but not as good as the "guys" and I still don't like her original song.

Lukas will probably be the winner with Toby a close second.

Thanks for your website and a summer of interesting posts.

Magni is the best and Tommy Lee is braindead. The Iceman does not need crap like that from that stupid band coz he'll be bigger than Supernova. Tommy Lee can take his not so good band and shove it.

I recognized Paula Abdul, before Dave mentioned her. The camera panned over to her several times. (Big Whup). Was that Jessica Simpson's sister in the audience--what's her name--Ashlee. Also thought that I recognized a couple of other Hollywood "no talents" in the audience......sorry, but the RS contestants that left early on all had more talent than either of the Simpsons or Ms. Abdul.

Hmmmm, perhaps it was an injury that occurred prior to the begining of the show. Mayhap it was healing, and she pulled rather than tore it?

Look at Tommy... I mean WHAT it up with the lizard lips routine? Hasn't he ever heard of chapstick? UGh...it freaks me out to watch him when he does that.

My call: I would love to see Magni because I think he is a solid candidate but I think they will choose toby - because he has a huge following. The dilana is just to tide her over unless she has tugged at their heart strings because of the whole press thing. They have all been baked by the press as some point, so she almost by default has their sympathy.

Cheers

Chills, chills and chills!!! Oh my lord, AWESOME show!!!!!!!! I cannot ask for anything better in tonight's performance. I am really grateful, I am sure I will watch tonight's recording over and over again after the season is over.

Curlio, thanks again for a wonderful recap plus this super-super website!!! This is the coolest site!!!

Prior to tonight's show, I just wanted to sit down, relax and enjoy the final week of this show. After watching it, a few performances gave me chills all over, put a big grin on my face, and my head almost exploded (seriously ;^). So, have quite a bit to say what's on my mind.

I will start by mentioning the two performances tonight that are most memorable to me. First is Dilana's Roxanne and Magni's Hush. If you are/were Dilana's fan, I think you will agree with Dave that tonight Dilana is back to her peak, at least I do. I really-really liked the way she sang Roxanne. The way that she toned down the background music IMO makes it so much more difficult to sing technically. You gotta be a great vocalist to pull it off when you strip down a song to this level because all people hear is your voice/singing, so any little flaws or annoyances will jump out at the audience very clearly. To me, she was able to take total command of the song beautifully, vocally it was very sweet and sensual. Some of you may not like it, but I really-really loved it. Amazingly I have to catch a deep breath after I've listened to it everytime. This performance is one that I would enjoy listening to late at night quietly in my living room. The only thing I can nitpick is her choice of using Magni, Tobi and Lukas to sing background for her. I think she should have let the house band to do that because those guys are awesome compared to Magni, Tobi and Lukas, background singing is a totally different skill altogether. Somehow the 3 of them didn't steal any of her thunder, whereas it was a different case when Tobi sang background for Storm. Anyhow, this performance ranks very high on my list of favorite Dilana performances: 1) Zombie 2) Roxanne 3) Lithium...

As for Magni, I thought he did a wonderful job tonight. IMO it was kinda tough to follow Dilana's act. But Magni showed me a performance that is really refreshing and FUN!! Again, I am SOOO amazed with his vocals. No matter how he wants to sing it, be it soft, loud, scream, yell, whatever, like his name it always come out just right/magnifico. Magni showed some great chemistry with the house band. If I didn't know better, I would think that this band must have played together for a long time. It really looked like a "band" (if that makes sense). I think Tommy's comment made it kinda obvious that he fears Magni will get first place tomorrow. I'm afraid Magni is already on SN's list.

Lukas's HeadSpin is my third favorite of the night. I didn't like this song in the beginning after hearing it twice in the past two weeks. However, he did a wonderful job stripping it down. Lukas really have a great talent, especially in the way he arrange/choreograph a song as evident again in tonight's performance.

As for Tobi, Tobi did a solid job as usual. IMO (which most would disagree), Tobi was outsang by the other 3 performers. Any other night, that performance would have been great. But tonight, IMO the other 3 brought their A+ game to the stage. But I don't think it'll be a big deal for Tobi because I don't think he's has a target on his back tomorrow. For the Aussies that would like for Tobi to win, make sure to vote for Tobi.

Lukas is hands down the most talented and unqiue rocker. Looks like Supernova is going to pick Toby. What a shame because I thought the goal is to bring back rock n roll into the mainstream. Here is the perfect opportunity to get it back but the band wants to play it safe and do pop music. That is really sad considering the bands musical background...very disappointing.
Tommy, Gilby and Jason if you choose Toby you're a sell out...always remember your roots.

I don't buy this turgid crap that Dilana faked her calf tear. I don't know what part of her calf she ripped, but there are several degrees of tearing. I recently suffered a level 3 tear of my medial gastrocnemus which is the inside of the calf muscle. Level 3 is considered very bad, like your muscle is basically shredded. But I swear to you and I have no reason to lie because I don't much care for Dilana, I was able to walk a few days after the injury. Not without pain and not full-on, but I was walking. Dilana's mobility is not proof she is faking. Ease off

i liked magni - in concert what matters at the end of the night from a lead performer is VOCALS - believe me when you hear a voice that sends chills you keep hearing it and reliving it - but how many of us come from a concert and complain about the sound - or the lead singer .....you gotta have a lead singer that can sing - so i like magni for that, perhaps lukas too....gotta spread those chills - keep the memories alive - only thing was was he seriously unfit? or something - hey fitness can be picked up i guess ...pps i love dilana but as ahighlight...i dont want to watch a whole concert-

thanks curlio for another season of Rockstar....I always enjoy the recaps from everyone and it's always interesting to read the opinions .....

the show last night was good.....but also boring.... too many repeats.....as for originals......I'd have to say my favorites in order are:
Lukas
Magni
Dilana
Toby
Lukas really proved himself tonight with his stripped down version of Headspin.....I think the comment Dave made about buying a ticket might be a sign.
Magni's original is great.....I have not always like Magni but he's grown on me!
Dilana.......love her....but I think last night's performance proved that she shouldn't be with SN.....she has a very unique style and she should pursue a solo career.
Toby....to me is just ok.....he's cute.....but I'm not that impressed with some of his song choices.....Karma Police definitely did not do it for me....and his original is a pop song.

I still think Dilana has the best voice out of everyone. She brings something the others are missing. Not to take anything away from the other contestants, but she rocks and they would be stupid not to take her on. I think the whole drama over what she said in the fake interview was a diversion because she had the competition in the bag and the show was getting boring. Go Dilana!
