Rock Star: Supernova picks a winner
|

Well we finally have our answer of who is the right person to front Supernova, even if we're not sure what the band's name will be after the show. In case you missed it, "Little Supernova" won an injunction against TV Supernova, making them unable to use the name after tonight. You can read all about that here. Anyhow the result was slightly predictable, but still fun to watch!
Dave Navarro started out by telling the four remaining rockers that they are incredible and that no matter who Supernova picks they will have a great choice. Brooke Burke then said that the bottom two will perform, and then one will be eliminated. The top three will then each perform, with Supernova picking the winner afterwards. Magni, Toby Rand, and Lukas Rossi were all in the bottom two at some point in the voting, leaving Dilana firmly perched on top.
First into the bottom was Magni, who performed Fire by Jimi Hendrix, the song that saved him from the bottom three earlier in the season. He played and sang wonderfully on the song. You can tell that House Band likes performing with him when he's up there. He's definitely a bandmate not just a frontman who will think only of himself. He's the guy other musicians want to play with.
Next into the bottom two was Toby, who performed White Wedding by Billy Idol. It was a nice performance as well. I find it funny that Toby and Magni, the best singers of the final four, are both in the bottom. At the end, he jumped out into the audience again, as usual.
Gilby Clarke then lied, saying this was a hard decision (we all know it wasn't hard). He said everyone grew and contributed so much. All things considered Magni has been a talented musician and plays great with a band. But he doesn't think Magni is fronting a band as much as being part of it. And I swear that I had my bit above written before Gilby said all that. Dave said that Magni has been a consistent singer and wished him luck. Magni thanked the fans who voted, and the houseband. He said he just wants to be in the House band, not to front them. He thanked Supernova for giving him the best summer of his life.
Did we all notice the Survivor clip that featured Lukas' song Headspin? I wonder if that was a sign of the answer? At this point when I'm pondering this, we don't have our winner yet.
Then we watched clips from each of the final three, and they told Supernova why they should be picked. Lukas' clip said he wouldn't have come her for second place. He wants to win this as the best is yet to come. Dave told him he has shown so much diversity. Lukas told Supernova that they could have been mean if they wanted to, they could have been egocentric. But they are all amazing guys and it would be his honor to lead them.
Dilana's clip had her saying that they're all good. She said you have to fight for the things you want in your life, and added that she needs Supernova and they need her. Dave told her that she has shown herself to be a fighter, strong and determined. Dilana told Supernova that they need someone who is 1000% dedicated to representing great rock and music. Lukas is amazing, Toby is incredible but she's the one.
Toby in his clip said that it's been the best time of his life. He says he's climbing and he thinks he has a great chance to win. Dave told Toby that he has grown into one heck of a performer. Toby thanked them all for their advice. He said that the energy he has brought to the stage wouldn't compare to what he could do when he's had a few beers before a show. He added that he's the tallest too.
Then of course they all performed again. It was a whirlwind of performance, not really deserving of a paragraph a piece. Lukas was first up with Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve. Dilana performed Zombie by the Cranberries. Toby was last up with the Killers hit Somebody Told Me. After the performances, Brooke gave House Band credit for a summer of great rock.
Then Jason Newsted told Toby that he has great vocal ability, and his range just cuts through no matter how loud the guitar gets. Toby steps up the performances each week, but he'll be the next to go home. Dave told Toby he has been amazing to watch grow. Toby thanked them for the best time ever. He said that to come third to Lukas and Dilana who have been consistently great was awesome. Supernova made the safe choice as it took Toby awhile to become great but Lukas and Dilana always have been. He thanked them for teaching him so much.
Brooke then stood onstage with the final two, Lukas and Dilana. Dave told Brooke it looked like she was performing a Goth Wedding. Gilby said they need another break before deciding.
Tommy Lee told Lukas that his energy, the way he moves, and his vocals are amazing. Dilana meanwhile has an enchanting voice. Any band would listen to their fans and the winner had the highest number of votes last night and that was Lukas (many sighs of relief from me). Dave told Dilana that he adores her and wants her to come play with House Band when they tour. Gilby offered to help her write and produce a record, which he was only doing for her. Dave wants to play for her, Tommy added that he's down for that. Dilana promised her fans that she will put out a CD with Gilby and Dave's help.
Brooke then wondered if they were forgetting something. Dave said he needed to be entertained. So Supernova with their new lead singer Lukas went off to perform. They performed "Be Yourself," then followed that with some talking about buying tickets and such. Magni then came back out to play guitar for "It's All Love." as the show signed off. Brooke promised they will be back next summer!
For next summer I suggest that they either find an entire band with House Band doing the judging, or do a battle of the bands with House Band judging. I, like many others, would also like a setting for a female band where a female has a better chance of winning as well. I'd also like to see a whole season of the rockers making their own music. It would save a lot of hassle over song repeats.
We apologize for the lateness of our recap, as we had a nifty little thunderstorm here that created a few problems for our internet provider. As I write this, we still can't connect. Hopefully we'll be able to get it up while today is still today! Well, I'm sitting at the library at the moment, putting this up. We'll be getting a new internet provider, as we're convinced our provider either was very stupid and did not have a surge protector or simply didn't start working on the problem until 9am this morning. We can think of no other reason an itty bitty thunderstorm could have caused this long of an outage.
Oh, and I think that Survivor commercial wasn't supposed to be on until later in the show.

The House Band was waaay better than Supernova.
Supernova will not last. Look at thier tour schedule they play 5 or 6 gigs a week. Nobody can tour like that for very long.
They blew it...Toby was thier only hope.

You shouldn't take the bashing so seriously my friend. In every contest, people will bag on the other contestants or not like them for one reason or another - even open minded people like myself When you take it personally feelings get hurt and friends are lost. A TV show isn't worth all that.
I couldn’t agree more! That is why I kept quiet – I mean I knew if I keep on advocating for her – I will lock horns unnecessarily, because I will be as irritating as she is – I made my point once and that’s that! Besides, I love the people here more than Dilana! (Sorry Dilana – I am being Honest!) LOL!

I was always told about the back story – like how Dilana thought she won, but was told that she didn’t – I am glad that was edited!
AHA! took me a few minutes, but I figured this out. When Tommy said that the winner had gotten the most votes, Dilana assumed that meant it was her because she didn't have to stand up along with Magni, Toby, and Lukas. A lot of fans kept making that mistake all season, and I think Dilana did too, thinking that because she didn't stand on elimination night that she was the top vote getter. That's not necessarily true - as those who stand only appeared in the bottom at some point. By the end of the votes, one of those standing could have ended up the top vote getter, but it's assumed that the seated persons are the top vote getters. Everyone has been making that mistake all season, and MBP has been letting them think it. Probably because it's better for the drama.
Even if I give Dilana credit for a bad spin by MBP, she still seems too egocentric to me. While I like all music, the artists that I like the most are those that at least fake an air of humility that she just lacked. Hence my adoration of Magni - who no one could ever seriously call arrogant or egocentric. Doesn't mean I won't buy Dilana's album - I still love her voice and spirit.
I wish Lukas well, and hope that he isn't setting himself up for failure by hoping to be part of the band. We all knew JD was willing to sit back and enjoy the ride being driven around by INXS - it's why the Marty fans did NOT want Marty to win, or Mig for that matter, as they would not have been happy with that. Magni wouldn't like being just a frontman either.
Anyhow, thanks to everyone who has made this season's coverage of Rock Star a delight to read! Keep in mind that even though we have a few months until American Idol starts, we will be covering other shows until then as well. We're looking into Celebrity Duets and Dancing with the Stars. And we have Nicole's Flavor of Love. We shall find us something to entertain ourselves, really.

Exactly Curlio, Dear Sprout, we all think the world of you and their is no mind sharper. You are going through something evidently very stressful. I am so sorry, but no matter how bad it is, you will integrate all the happening into your consciousness and then be a even smarter and wiser "poet"! I hope you don't think I am partonizing you, cause I am your biggest fan. I certainly hope you didn't stay away because of Dilana, if you did, then sweet Prince, you really do need to heal yourself. I am older and have had so many steam rollers to squash me during my life and betrayals and so forth, but I somehow come out the same ole crazy Piss-ant just wild and pristeen as a baby tiger.
So peace Sprout, you have everything you need to solve any ultimate problem.

Curlio, we need to mark this day somehow, you an I agreeing completely. Thanks to you and Dusty for everything. I really enjoyed the season, did miss my sproutster though.
A sharing, I really loved my Stormy, I could see no wrong with her, but I came across an XXX rated bit of video dialogue from her and I had to dial my love back a notch. Just being honest. Trash talk is trash talk and is not pretty from a saint or sinner. You know kinda like Seinfeld when he met the Ideal woman only to find out she was a card carrying racist. I MAY BE WRONG, but if my Sproutster were at his full strength he would never have attached himself to someone so flawed.
If you look back early on, I thought something was really wrong witht the sound on SOME contestants, Jenny could hardly be heard, why didn't they at least turn up her mike or make adjustiments during editiing. Also, Lucas had incredable phote editing, during his performances, I would venture the took twice as long on his shots, to make him out to be a video idol!
As Sprout has said last year, and we are all quite versed on the MBP aspects of this, I think that much credability was lost by me for the show and the character of all involved, I know I am old fashioned, but that is who I am.
Love Love, All Will

I feel that Lukas is very good, but Dilana would have been a great addition as a lead. I don't normally listen to this line of music, but I have followed the show from day one and I and was impressed with Dilana when she performed Johnny Cash's " Ring Of Fire ". Ever since that even my wife and I enjoyed her performances. Mind you, we listen mainly to Country and Oldies. My wife and I were even talking about going to a Supernova concert to watch her. Now we will not. I wonder how many viewers out there fell the same. I realize that the guys felt that thier choice was the best for the group, but I wonder how many $ Dilana would have brought in.

MOM – you always ROCK and thanks for everything – I always wanted to see you in editor circle since long – I am not kidding – ask Curlio and Dusty!
Anyway, our thoughts obviously could not meet, because you reported what you saw and that was the truth they wanted most to see and unfortunately, I was always told about the back story – like how Dilana thought she won, but was told that she didn’t – I am glad that was edited! Anyway, the truth is you have not said anything different than most of Dilana haters have already said. I mean Curlio said the same thing as you did, albeit in different words – sentiments same.
My point is now Mark Burnett Production cannot portray Dilana as a complete bitch, who cannot see beyond herself and who has a sob story to tell every freaking week. So my point is now no one is going to find a new point to bitch about her every freaking week!
Interestingly, now I totally get why she received the edit she did, though Supernova would deny it with passion, but Lukas must have made the cut after Creep – Think about it – He opens his voice and Dilana starts slipping – I don’t mind Lukas getting the job, but MBP has a thing for creating demons – why else would they keep on hammering on one person?
Last year, J.D.’s edit changed drastically after the song writing clinic – so I am a little aware of how this works!
Also, I am glad that Dilana did not win – it was obvious that she would incite hatred no matter what she does, so what’s the point?
She is a great artiste and I will always love her, because I did not buy the MBP version. Anyway, I do realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and just as many would keep on hating her, and despite the popular vote – I will keep on loving her! :)
So that's what I meant!
[...]
There is one huge difference between J.D. and Lukas – while J.D. always was extremely vocal about loving the band INXS, he also always made sure that INXS knew that he was in awe of them and respected them.
Lukas has never made such statements – at least on the camera! Also he has always shown this superiority thing going for him. Too many examples - but water under the bridge!
So I believe, and mind you I can be totally wrong that Lukas would not submit totally to Supernova – he will expect equal treatment and I sincerely wonder if Supernova guys will give him that. Don't get me wrong -
Sprout I have missed you! And you bring out a very interesting point about the editing. I definatly think that Dilana was edited to look worse than she actually is. And that very well may have been done to "sway" the vote. Isn't TV a lot about perception? And as long as we percieve being in control, we are all happy. But if that perception is not what the producers, band members, etc. want, they must change the audiences perception to get the outcome they want. Okay enough philisophical stuff.
Wasn't totally surprised with the outcome, just the commercial.
OK regulars, what are we going to gab about now?

Well, at least the Dilana bashing would stop now and I can finally participate. Sprout, you know I think you're great, I hope you didn't feel I was bashing you. My actual favorite for the show was Josh, and he was kicked off long ago. We need more insiders so we can get more information on the parts they edit out! That's really sad that Dilana took the line about the most votes and thought she had won. I'm glad they did edit that out! Just because she wasn't in the bottom two doesn't mean she had the most votes. That's why I always love your reviews, you have that inside track into the behind the scenes stuff! Hope you're back here editing soon, we love ya.

I've got an idea about avoiding song repeats. How about giving the rockers different songs to chose from in the first place! There are thousands of good rock songs. There is absolutely no need to do the same songs twice. At least not for a very long time.
And yeah, I'd like to see a girl group next year, or at least a group that previously had a female singer, so they have a better shot. Rock and Roll is so male dominated, so that would help. I mean, let's face it; SN was never going to have a female singer.

Frankly, If you think Lukas sucks, you should get a life! He was the best singer in the show and Toby has like a 80's band voice. Tobys a wicked singer but I could see him in a group like Maroon 5 or the Killers. Lukas has an amazing voice for rock and he totally suits the band. Dilanna was just a waste and shouldve been eliminated long ago, but Im not the judge. Wouldnt it be cool if Magni became a part of the houseband? Hes an awesome guitar player and I would buy his CD.

As for the controversy surrounding this episode, I have something to add. When Toby was told to go, in the middle of being complemented, he was not surprised - I personally was numb, here he is being complemented, you're great, your'e gone - it really seemed to me (and I really hate to imply I think he could be so dishonest) that he knew, and had already worked on his speech. I also feel he was going to say something else, hence T Lee saying "good boy" when he was finished - I think he was going to say it's all fixed, but realized they would just edit that and take his car away.
I also thought about his "Saving" song, White Wedding? Sure he did a good job with it, but he did Somebody Told Me much better, how did he know to save it for "pick me, pick me"? If I thought, gee, if I do this badly they kick me off now, I'm going to do the song I do best. Why leave the best for last, if you don't know there will be a last.
So Lucas "won". Dialana's been offered a record. Toby got a car. I can see Magni getting a position on next years show with the band. Storm got offered Dave on her rcord. Ryan got a car. I think the order they left was already fixed. I think Toby was kept, purely because he pulls the chicks. I think if they really thought he deserved top 3 he would have got offers to help his career.
I'm glad that Toby didn't win now, I think he's better than a sham competition (I also think this of the other 14 contestants) I know I'll be seeing Juke Kartel sliding up the charts now.

Don't get me wrong - INXS treat J.D. extremely well, but there is a difference when you get equal treatment and when you expect it! This however would make the band's journey an interesting ride, to say the least!
J.D has merged with INXS like sugar in milk, but whether Lukas will follow in fellow Canadian Rocker’s footsteps remains to be seen!
hmmmm.......I think his resume is pretty impressive he seems like a hard worker to me and has worked with alot of talented people so he'll probably by a team player.......I'm excited to see them in February when they come to Columbus!!
from msn.com
Lukas Rossi
Lukas has recorded, written, produced and played with his own band, the incredibly popular Cleavage, as well as co-written, sung and gigged with various Canadian bands, including Papa Roach, I Mother, Tea Party, Edwin and Big Wreck. He also took on the impressive opportunity of working with producer and Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson, as well as and Jay and John Levine from the Philosopher Kings and Prozac.
.......after acquiring a publishing deal with EMI Music Canada in 2004, Lukas worked and wrote with producer Dave Tyson (Alana Miles & Amanda Marshall) in Los Angeles. After that, he recorded demos with producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Three Days Grace), leading to the formation of the band Rise Electric.
..... he's had several showcases in New York City for Atlantic Records and Arista.
...... Lukas also contributes vocal work for television and radio, singing on national ad campaigns (including McDonald's) and even animated cartoons during which he sings the intro song to the shows "Rescue Heroes" and "Beyblade."
Phew! That's a lot of work. And respect. Lukas' credentials, experience and finally, magnetism make for a performer as exceptional as he sounds.

USA Today's Pop Candy blog has an interview with Lukas. Sounds like they're going to record his original song, "Headspin." He mentions plans to go into the studio with Gilby to work on the song.
http://blogs.usatoday.com.../09/a_qa_with_rock_.html
as for Toby "knowing," I think it was just he and Magni had to realize Dilana and Lukas were going to be the final two. Plus remember, there's a lot of stuff edited out of the broadcast, so some of those reaction shots could have been done a few minutes later, when he was done reacting or something.

This is a copy of my note to Bill Lanta who asked me about Curlio. Keep an eye out for him and any newbees from RSGH they will add greatly to our site.!! Will
Hi Bill, Just wanted to know how much I enjoyed your posting on this site. You are very witty and with it. Writing like yours and Diva and MHuney and Candyrocker and KellyM, and many others just adds so much to this experience and has made the RS SN a summer treat. I can't wait till next year, where I will try to blog with the best of you here. I felt I needed this year to get to know you all.
On the question you asked me about Curlio.com. Well, I make comments there and contribute news and newworthy items to the editorial staff.
And, as you noted earlier, I am such a fan of the site that they made me "unofficial member recruiter"!
I am suprised that as much as some of you like music and can write about it in a fun and thought provoking way, you had not already found Curlio. It is a site that is run by Curlio and her husband Dusty, it is free and is completely non-intrusive in your business. Those who join up as members, also free, have access to much on the site. The are always looking for contributing writers or editors like our Bill and many others here. The peak busy times are for Idol and RS but RS was not quite as busy this year. Last year there was more interest, as you see many had the same sentiments as you Bill, about the quaility that is. I took the liberty to post some of your better later post to help stir the idea pot there. They really enjoyed and commented on Bill's articles. This place would be great for some of you folks, and it would in no way interfere with Rex's site next year, lets hope.
Curlio, is working now on improving the interface, to make it more and more inviting and userfriendly. I don't have access to the editorial staff materials but, again, I can see Bill and others becoming staples there.
And when someone in Paris googles about SN or such, they will have your article pop up, one of our new writers was the first news article on Google News on the show!
This is all free, all for fun, and all for the commmunity, and there are some smart folks there to keep you sane or make you argue your points better. If I see any of you there I will welcome you. You might give it a try.
Anyway Bill, and crew thanks again for the fun this year. Will

Thankyou curlio for this season, been a delight to watch and listen each week. I've said Toby's gonna be the winner and after the finale I still think they're idiots not to pick him but thats just me probably. I watched it "live" here in Australia and I had an empty feeling when they announced the winner which I knew was gonna be Lukas after Tob's was cut. When you compare last season to this, there was a distinct lack of emotion from the winner here and I'm sure Lukas knew it as in the bag well and truely before the finale began. I heard that Tommy Lee's post performance comments over Lukas were sooo enthusuastic that they had to cut it out so its not given away. Once SN or whatvever they are performed their songs I still question Lukas' credentials and I shouldnt at this stage. I watched INXS' season intensly aswell and after watching them in Sydney a few weeks ago he IS WITHOUT DOUBT the man for the job. Lukas for me hasnt proven too much, time will tell. Juke Kartel will launch to be the band that I knew they could be before the show and because of this im sorta glad he didnt win, but all these clinics gave tob's such an advantage and he didnt slip up at all apart from the runaway train performance (which wasnt a shocker, just not too exciting). Well 2 canadians winning and 2 aussies finishing 3rd, go figure. Bring on next season with something shocking and riviting = winner keeps houseband. Thats all I could think of at this stage, Van Halens gotta cash in their retirement check.

I am a little confused about the whole, please stand indicating that you were in the bottom 3 at some point during the call voting...If Dilana didn't stand, it completely implies that she was never in the bottom 3...or was it only the bottom 2 and that's how the deception isn't really a lie? I can't remember..
