Rock Star: Supernova picks a winner

Well we finally have our answer of who is the right person to front Supernova, even if we're not sure what the band's name will be after the show. In case you missed it, "Little Supernova" won an injunction against TV Supernova, making them unable to use the name after tonight. You can read all about that here. Anyhow the result was slightly predictable, but still fun to watch!
Dave Navarro started out by telling the four remaining rockers that they are incredible and that no matter who Supernova picks they will have a great choice. Brooke Burke then said that the bottom two will perform, and then one will be eliminated. The top three will then each perform, with Supernova picking the winner afterwards. Magni, Toby Rand, and Lukas Rossi were all in the bottom two at some point in the voting, leaving Dilana firmly perched on top.
First into the bottom was Magni, who performed Fire by Jimi Hendrix, the song that saved him from the bottom three earlier in the season. He played and sang wonderfully on the song. You can tell that House Band likes performing with him when he's up there. He's definitely a bandmate not just a frontman who will think only of himself. He's the guy other musicians want to play with.
Next into the bottom two was Toby, who performed White Wedding by Billy Idol. It was a nice performance as well. I find it funny that Toby and Magni, the best singers of the final four, are both in the bottom. At the end, he jumped out into the audience again, as usual.
Gilby Clarke then lied, saying this was a hard decision (we all know it wasn't hard). He said everyone grew and contributed so much. All things considered Magni has been a talented musician and plays great with a band. But he doesn't think Magni is fronting a band as much as being part of it. And I swear that I had my bit above written before Gilby said all that. Dave said that Magni has been a consistent singer and wished him luck. Magni thanked the fans who voted, and the houseband. He said he just wants to be in the House band, not to front them. He thanked Supernova for giving him the best summer of his life.
Did we all notice the Survivor clip that featured Lukas' song Headspin? I wonder if that was a sign of the answer? At this point when I'm pondering this, we don't have our winner yet.
Then we watched clips from each of the final three, and they told Supernova why they should be picked. Lukas' clip said he wouldn't have come her for second place. He wants to win this as the best is yet to come. Dave told him he has shown so much diversity. Lukas told Supernova that they could have been mean if they wanted to, they could have been egocentric. But they are all amazing guys and it would be his honor to lead them.
Dilana's clip had her saying that they're all good. She said you have to fight for the things you want in your life, and added that she needs Supernova and they need her. Dave told her that she has shown herself to be a fighter, strong and determined. Dilana told Supernova that they need someone who is 1000% dedicated to representing great rock and music. Lukas is amazing, Toby is incredible but she's the one.
Toby in his clip said that it's been the best time of his life. He says he's climbing and he thinks he has a great chance to win. Dave told Toby that he has grown into one heck of a performer. Toby thanked them all for their advice. He said that the energy he has brought to the stage wouldn't compare to what he could do when he's had a few beers before a show. He added that he's the tallest too.
Then of course they all performed again. It was a whirlwind of performance, not really deserving of a paragraph a piece. Lukas was first up with Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve. Dilana performed Zombie by the Cranberries. Toby was last up with the Killers hit Somebody Told Me. After the performances, Brooke gave House Band credit for a summer of great rock.
Then Jason Newsted told Toby that he has great vocal ability, and his range just cuts through no matter how loud the guitar gets. Toby steps up the performances each week, but he'll be the next to go home. Dave told Toby he has been amazing to watch grow. Toby thanked them for the best time ever. He said that to come third to Lukas and Dilana who have been consistently great was awesome. Supernova made the safe choice as it took Toby awhile to become great but Lukas and Dilana always have been. He thanked them for teaching him so much.
Brooke then stood onstage with the final two, Lukas and Dilana. Dave told Brooke it looked like she was performing a Goth Wedding. Gilby said they need another break before deciding.
Tommy Lee told Lukas that his energy, the way he moves, and his vocals are amazing. Dilana meanwhile has an enchanting voice. Any band would listen to their fans and the winner had the highest number of votes last night and that was Lukas (many sighs of relief from me). Dave told Dilana that he adores her and wants her to come play with House Band when they tour. Gilby offered to help her write and produce a record, which he was only doing for her. Dave wants to play for her, Tommy added that he's down for that. Dilana promised her fans that she will put out a CD with Gilby and Dave's help.
Brooke then wondered if they were forgetting something. Dave said he needed to be entertained. So Supernova with their new lead singer Lukas went off to perform. They performed "Be Yourself," then followed that with some talking about buying tickets and such. Magni then came back out to play guitar for "It's All Love." as the show signed off. Brooke promised they will be back next summer!
For next summer I suggest that they either find an entire band with House Band doing the judging, or do a battle of the bands with House Band judging. I, like many others, would also like a setting for a female band where a female has a better chance of winning as well. I'd also like to see a whole season of the rockers making their own music. It would save a lot of hassle over song repeats.
We apologize for the lateness of our recap, as we had a nifty little thunderstorm here that created a few problems for our internet provider. As I write this, we still can't connect. Hopefully we'll be able to get it up while today is still today! Well, I'm sitting at the library at the moment, putting this up. We'll be getting a new internet provider, as we're convinced our provider either was very stupid and did not have a surge protector or simply didn't start working on the problem until 9am this morning. We can think of no other reason an itty bitty thunderstorm could have caused this long of an outage.
Oh, and I think that Survivor commercial wasn't supposed to be on until later in the show.

Well, at least the Dilana bashing would stop now and I can finally participate.
No surprise that Lukas won - Congrats to him!
I am just wondering, if Lukas would be what J.D. is for INXS!
Time will tell.
Good Luck to Supernova anyway!
Time for lull! Don't run away - y'all!

I posted this under one of the other threads, but I'll post it here too.
Was I the only one who noticed a huge difference in the audio for "the band soon to be called something other than Supernova" and the contestant's performances earlier in the show? Suddenly Lukas' vocals didn't sound quite as harsh, as if some new mixing had been done to smooth his voice out just a bit.
I checked the Rockstar website for audition info, as Brooke said, but didn't see anything. I was hoping there'd be clues as to next year's format.
A full-band competition would be cool, though I'd prefer to see VH-1's old "Bands on the Run" show instead.
I agree on the Survivor ad. Rather than being the sign of some vast conspiracy. Remember, the show is taped around 7 a.m. in Los Angeles, so CBS has a few hours to prepare any special ads.
Hopefully next year they'll have more singers I actually give a hoot about. Not that I particularly hated everyone this year. I did enjoy Magni, Toby (toward the end at least), Storm (some of the time) and Ryan (again toward the end). But none of them really excited me.
Oh and drop the audience signs like "the Rossi Posse" (were they there last year?) next year. This isn't American Idiol.

My 13 year old is a fan of Lukas. From the beginning of the show she has said that Lukas had to be the winner in order for the band to reach out to teenagers. I still believe Toby would have been a better choice. Look at the crowd a bunch of aging blonde groupies...eek.
The choice has been made, my 13 year old and her friends love Lukas. Maybe she was right after all.

The Mansion - Episode 1
All the rockers gather, with Lukas smack dab in the middle of the group. He's the first to raise his red champagne glass, and propose the toast -
"May the best person win the job, and come out on top."
And he certainly did....
The Burnett editing team is famous for cryptic clues. I'm quite surprised that no one has mentioned it? In the last webisode, as Toby, Dilana, and Magni are frolicking poolside, one asks "Where's Lukas?". Cut to Lukas in peaceful slumber. There you have it.....
Goodnight, Sweet Prince. Rest well now, because very soon, you won't be getting much....
Love you, Sweetie! See you in Vancouver on Feb. 19th!

mirrorball, I too had noticed the better quality of audio and video when SN plays. I first noticed it when SN first played with Dilana. Yeah, I'm convinced that the result was known from the middle of the season, maybe not week 1, but definitely the middle. You can't really blame Supernova for that though. The goof with the Survivor commercial was really stupid of them though. That just gave the whole thing away.

I was shocked when I saw the survivor commercial. I didn't understand why Lukas was in between the clips of the survivor show? mirrorball said:Was I the only one who noticed a huge difference in the audio for "the band soon to be called something other than Supernova" and the contestant's performances earlier in the show? No, I did. I noticed it every show SN played. The entire clarity on the picture and sound changed, like they enhanced it to try and make it a better sound. Did they have to do that to help them out? mirrorball said:Hopefully next year they'll have more singers I actually give a hoot about. Not that I particularly hated everyone this year. I did enjoy Magni, Toby At the end Magni and Toby were my favorites too. Between Lukas and Dilana I really didn't care, well except that I didn't want Dilana to win...she needed her bubble to pop or she wasn't going to fit through any doorways! She was getting the same syndrome Paul McCartney has inflated ego, head so big they can't fit through a doorway!
Great season Curlio and Dusty...thank you so much for your site! Already waiting for next season!

editing, my friend, editing. The show was filmed at 7 a.m. California time. There's no way they could do the show in "real time" as they do with shows like Late Night with David Letterman (it's taped in the afternoon, but it's done live to video. The only editing done is to bleep out offensive audio or to mabye shorten the final guest for time constraints). Moving the gear around and stuff takes too long. You'll notice after the contestants gathered on stage for the final decision, Tommy's drum kit suddenly appeared.
I noticed the video too. Those aren't filters, but I think they are digital video cameras in there. These aren't necessarily for hi-def, but just digital video. If you've seen Michael Mann movies like "Collateral" or his brief CBS series "Robbery Homocide Division" a few years ago, then you know what I mean.
Had to ask about the audio. My tv's speakers tend to muddy up dialogue from time to time, even though the picture is great. And I have bad hearing to begin with. Good to know my ears aren't playing tricks on me.

comparing Dilana and Paul McCartney is a little bit of a stretch...I think he may be entitled to a big head..and I'm a Dilana fan.
I think it worked out best for everyone. If Dilana was chosen it would possibly have overshadowed the rest of the band--whether you like her or hate her. Her stage presence is enough though--again, whether you like her or hate her--that if she's successful, it will be more of a situation of a No Doubt or Hole where all you know is the lead singer. Toby deserves to have a younger band behind him and Magni is good enough to be a solo guy or front an otherwise anonymous group behind him.

What's weird is that Dilana is offered a contract, etc. but lost the competition. I would rather have the contract to record with Gilby and Navarro and not play with the soon to be new name band. The only decent member out of that bunch is Tommy Lee unfortunately. Gilby and Newstead have had too many problems in previous projects because of their attitudes. I think Dilana should think her lucky stars she might get a chance to tour with a real band and have her own CD. I really, really liked a few of the female vocalists at the beginning of the show... and in my opinion, they should have still been there at the end. When you have two vocalists trained for years vocally, their instruments are better then some street guy. I think as long as its a male band looking for a singer, a female doesn't stand a chance. By the way, I'm a male, that writes and records his own music... and I stand by my decision. I quit voting and watching the show when Jill was thrown off. I still think vocally she was the top notch.

Lukas is horrible, but I think he goes well with "them". Dilana I love, she rocks. A few head issues but who doesn't.
Magni is smooth, an opening act, but not a headliner. Tobi will have his pop career, wooing teen girls. Lukas will tour with them and will disappear as well after the tour, if it isn't cancelled.
I will be buying Dilana's CD, and going to see her perform when I can.

Congrats to Licka-s Pussi...oops i meant Lukas Rossi. The audio and mix were without a doubt enhanced.Give ol' Lukas and his "Johnny Rotten Act" about 5 maybe 6 shows before he blows his throat out.Better take the vocal coach out on the road with ya son.Doesn't matter whether you sing metal, pop, rock, opera, grunge or punk-you better have had some proper vocal training or your voice will be toast.Anyone remember when Axl Rose' used to walk off stage and cancel shows ?? Everyone thought it was just his big rebel ego act, while more often than not he blew his freaking voice out and couldn't talk let alone sing at that point.Luckily for Luke it'll be a short tour ! Oh yeah -that hey, hey, hey ...ho,ho,ho song really is complete cr-p no matter whose singing it .Thanks to CBS for another season of ROCKSTAR : EXCREMENT .( By the way with all the foreign flags in the audience i thought i was at an illegal alien rally)...go figure.

Wow. I can't believe the Carol Channing–voiced Ewok won.
Can't wait for the Saturday morning cartoon, with their mystery- and crime-solving music tour, a la South Park's Korn Halloween. Gilby will be the level-headed one ("There's a rational explanation for this"), Jason the empathic one ("I feel like whomever's doing this is just lashing out with negative energy") and Tommy Lee the comedy relief ("Duh! Huh-HUH! Duh!"). Goth-Emo Lukas will have only one line each episode, and it will be the point of the show ("Old man Tarnerford was just upset because no one would let him do what HE wanted to do ..."). Then they would close the show with "Be Yourself." Hey hey ho ho indeed.

I wonder if Supernova wanted a guy all along. It comes across that way. Dilana had the most votes apparently but something happened during the audience response. I wonder what those voting numbers actually are. Something smells fishy with Supernova. I had suspicion early on that none of the gals would be picked. Most of our friends are professional musicians and feel that Dilana got a raw deal. But that is only opinion. Lukas is good too though.

You shouldn't take the bashing so seriously my friend. In every contest, people will bag on the other contestants or not like them for one reason or another - even open minded people like myself When you take it personally feelings get hurt and friends are lost. A TV show isn't worth all that.

I was so happy she didn't win, good for Lukas, but he wasn't the one I liked, I guess I'm over 30? MOM – you always ROCK and thanks for everything – I always wanted to see you in editor circle since long – I am not kidding – ask Curlio and Dusty!
Anyway, our thoughts obviously could not meet, because you reported what you saw and that was the truth they wanted most to see and unfortunately, I was always told about the back story – like how Dilana thought she won, but was told that she didn’t – I am glad that was edited! Anyway, the truth is you have not said anything different than most of Dilana haters have already said. I mean Curlio said the same thing as you did, albeit in different words – sentiments same.
My point is now Mark Burnett Production cannot portray Dilana as a complete bitch, who cannot see beyond herself and who has a sob story to tell every freaking week. So my point is now no one is going to find a new point to bitch about her every freaking week!
Interestingly, now I totally get why she received the edit she did, though Supernova would deny it with passion, but Lukas must have made the cut after Creep – Think about it – He opens his voice and Dilana starts slipping – I don’t mind Lukas getting the job, but MBP has a thing for creating demons – why else would they keep on hammering on one person?
Last year, J.D.’s edit changed drastically after the song writing clinic – so I am a little aware of how this works!
Also, I am glad that Dilana did not win – it was obvious that she would incite hatred no matter what she does, so what’s the point?
She is a great artiste and I will always love her, because I did not buy the MBP version. Anyway, I do realize that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and just as many would keep on hating her, and despite the popular vote – I will keep on loving her! :)
So that's what I meant! rdhdbychoice said: hey Sprout what do you mean by this?....I haven't really been following JD or INXS since last year? There is one huge difference between J.D. and Lukas – while J.D. always was extremely vocal about loving the band INXS, he also always made sure that INXS knew that he was in awe of them and respected them.
Lukas has never made such statements – at least on the camera! Also he has always shown this superiority thing going for him. Too many examples - but water under the bridge!
So I believe, and mind you I can be totally wrong that Lukas would not submit totally to Supernova – he will expect equal treatment and I sincerely wonder if Supernova guys will give him that. Don't get me wrong - INXS treat J.D. extremely well, but there is a difference when you get equal treatment and when you expect it! This however would make the band's journey an interesting ride, to say the least!
J.D has merged with INXS like sugar in milk, but whether Lukas will follow in fellow Canadian Rocker’s footsteps remains to be seen!

Dilana will be doing fine with the help of Gilby co-writing and producing her album, and with Dave helping out as well. Her album should be interesting.
If Magni and Toby take their momentum, and get moving already they both should be able to do fine.
I think Supernova were quite certain the last 2 or 3 weeks that they were going for Lukas, ever since the interview parts where they said that handling the press was a very important part of the job. I think that was the deciding point for Supernova. (And probably the open season for Mark Burnet for portraiting Dilana.)
I do hope that we hear more of this years contestants than we have heard from the contestants from last year.
