Accounts  News   Interactive    Collective     Contact  Sparks react angrily to BBC ban of song curlio     2006-09-26 11:56:58 PressRelease       Sparks have reacted rather angrily to a decision by the BBC to not play their new single, "Dick Around." Ron (on the left in the picture) and Russell Mael were appearing on a morning show on BBC, and host Jono Coleman was banned from playing the group's single. The band says in a press release that Jono and his co-host Jo Good were "obviously embarrassed" over the incident. For those not familiar with the term, 'dick around' means to fool around or spend time idly. The BBC apparently took offense at the title and refused to play the song. Ron Mael said: "The BBC has officially killed off our new single "Dick Around," ostensibly through rather childish objections to the title, an innocent reference to the idle life. That a piece of music can be condemned purely by it's title without the "decion makers" even having the decency to open the CD case is a travesty and an insult to both us as the creators of the music and to the listeners of the BBC." Meanwhile, Russel Mael responded that "the reaction from the public to this record has been nothing but positive so the BBC should stop trying to be the morality police when it is so clearly misplaced." Fans of Sparks in England will be able to catch the group on tour over the next couple of days, as they play a few dates. Later in October the band will travel to Japan for a couple of shows there.
