This year the 2006 Billboard Music Awards were Live from MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The whole award show opened with a performance from Janet Jackson. Part of the song was censored for several seconds, and that was the first of a set of censored parts that would be aired this evening. Some of the dancers did some amazing moves. It did look like Janet was playbacking most of the performance.
After the performance Kid Rock came out to just introduce the first two presenters. Flava Flav and Howie Mandell (Deal or No Deal). Somewhere in the small act Howie Mandell says that Flav must have a huge *bleep* (yes it was beeped on the television.) as that could the only reason be why the women would love him. I don't think that Flava understood the hinted insult. They announced the Pop Single Of The Year. The winner of that category was Nelly Furtado with Promiscuous.
The Billboard Award show decided to have some fun and run 'advertisements' between the parts, Where they would announce what was coming up. The whole commercial was based on the Car-Insurance commercials where an unknown person talks then a celebrity brings it differently. The first one was at this break and it was a regular fan with Charo.
After the advertisements Dave Navarro and Wynonna Judd present Male Country Artist of the year. The winner of that award is Kenny Chesney. Kenny also won the awards for Country Songs Artist of the year.
After this Chingy and Three 6 Mafia introduce the three girls that bring out the trophies every time and one of the three 6 mafia members is censored while he makes a remark about the girls. While he has his tongue hanging on the floor the other two announce that the winner for R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the year is Mary J Blige. She also won "Female R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the year, hot 100 airplay of the year, R&B/Hip-Hop songs artist of the year, R&B/Hip Hop album artist of the year, R&B/Hip Hop album of the year, R&B/Hip-Hop song of the year, R&B/Hip-Hop song airplay of the year, Videoclip of the year. And if you think that there are too many R&B/Hip-Hop awards for the Billboard awards, you're completely right and I wonder why it's not called "The R&B/Hip-Hop and some other music awards"
Before they go to the commercials, they jokingly announce that Kevin Federline is doing a surprise performance. And they follow that announcement with a clip from an old movie of people fleeing a theatre.
After the long commercial Bow Wow and Akon announce the performance of Fergie. It was a good performance, except that several parts of it of course got censored.
This was followed by Katharine McPhee and Chris Daughtry announcing the next category. Before that Katharine announced that the new album of Chris has become the Nr1. Rock album on the charts today. Then they say the nominees for Rock Album of the year and the winner was Nickelback with their album "All The Right Reasons". They also won Artist - Duo/Group of the year, Hot 100 artists Duo/Group of the year
It was time for another advertisment this time with a regular fan and Little Richard. Hilarious.
The next introduction was done by Franky J and Bowling For Soup. They introduced the three next performers. All three performances had their own color and the whole stage changed into that color. The first color was Black and the performer was Young Jeezy followed by LudaCris on a red stage together with Pharrell. The last performance was just LudaCris on a greenstage.
The next award was presented by Jesse McCartney and Kathy Griffin. Kathy said that Jesse should look at her and not at her rack, it also ended it her saying that Jesse should remove his hand from her behind, which Jesse responded that Kathy seemed to like it. Clearly an answer that Kathy didn't expect. Both of them seemed to have fun up there and definately one of the better and funnier couples of the night. They ended up announcing the winne rfor Soundtrack Album Of The Year. It was won by Highschool Musical
The next announcers were Criss Angel and Danity Kane they announced the Rap Artist of the year. The winner of this category was T.I. He also won Rap Album of the Year, Rap Album artist of the year, Rap Songs artist of the year and Videoclips artist of the year
Denise Richards introduced the next performance which was Gwen Stefani with a great performance of "Wind It Up".
The next award was Female Artist of the year. This was announced as Carmen Electra and Paris Hilton, as mentioned earlier Paris Hilton pulled out because she didn't agree with the text she had to say. Instead it was Carmen Electra and Chris (?). He told Carmen to follow the script and he would do Paris' part. Which mostly involved saying "That's Hot". This was one of the other best couples that were put together to announce a category. The Female Artist of the year winner was Rihanna. And compared to the two presenters it was amazing how tall Rihanna is. She also won Female Hot 100 Artist Of The Year and top 100 artist of the year
Joe Elliott and Phil Collen from Def Leppard were presenting together with Kristen Bell for the category Rock Single of the year. The winner for that category was Three Days Grace with the single "Animal I Have Become"
It was time for another advertisement this time it was with Don LaFontaine, known as the "Movie Trailer Guy" and a regular fan.
The Next performance was announced by Spike Feresten and the actors Ron Livingston and RoseMarie DeWitt both from the serie "Standoff". The performance was The Fray. They also won the categories Digital Album of the year with "How To Save A Life", Digital Album artist of the year and Digital Songs Artist of the year. it was a good performance, but for the very first time I saw a bit of Adam Sessler ( Host of X-Play ) in the lead singer Isaac Slade. I'm not sure for whom that would be an insult though.
After the performance Stevie Wonder introduced Tony Bennett and what Tony Bennett has meant to the music industry in the last 60 years. For those accomplishments Tony Bennett recieved the Century Award.
The next performance of Mary J Blige was introduced by Rapper Nas. In my opinion the performance was just okay, and likely the worst of the night, with all the other outstanding performances.
Big & Rich and Paula Abdul presented the award for Album of the year. Carrie Underwood got that honour with her album "Some Hearts". She also won Country Album of the year, Female Billboard 200 artist of the year, Female country artist of the year and New Country Artist of the year.
The award after the break was presented by Courtney Love and The Killers. Courtney mentioned that The Killers were supposed to perform, however Brandon from the Killers lost his voice but they still decided to show up. They announced the winner for Artist of the year. Chris Brown got this category aswell as the categories New Artist of the year and Male Artist of the year.
It was time for the big finale. It was a performance of Kid Rock, Billy Gibbons (ZZTop guitarist) and Nickelback. Kid Rock did the most singing, Nickelback played all the instruments and Billy Gibbons showed that he is still awesome with a guitar. It was a great performance to close the show with.
After watching the show I just have the feeling that the categories are chosen very badly and it feels like some categories just are the same but with a different name. Rap, R&B and Hip-Hop are overpresented with awards, while essentially all other Genres except for country are pushed to the background.
you can't discredit the award show for having a high saturation of r&b and hiphop awards. that particular music genre runs the radio therefore it runs the billboard charts and that's what the award show is for, am i right? yes... yes i am
Just an FYI - It is Phill Collen, not Phil Collent from Def Leppard
Typo, Thanks it's fixed now.

I can if the R&B Hip-Hop is OVER represented. There are other categories that are popular too. There is a high number of R&B/Hip-Hop songs on the radio, but not that high. They could have balanced the show better.
This reads a little like someone wrote an article so that they could put it up on a website page. Another person describing the event if you didn't happen to catch it. It doesn't really read like journalism (and whether that's good or bad depends on the reader I suppose).
Billboard awards aren't chosen by a panel of judges or by ballot or critical acclaim, it's by record sales and radio play, that's why all the artist mentioned are not any good. And popularity weighs heavily, because the three genres you mentioned sell records, as opposed to those ones pushed to the background.

It's called a recap, and yes that's what it is intended to be - something for people to read who missed it or for people to read and comment on if they watched it and want to talk about it. You want boring normal journalism you can find that one everywhere

It was 2am, for some reason my proof reading abilities go downwards after midnight.

Ah, but the awards were the top of the R&B/Hip-Hop charts. Billboard does have other charts too, for alternative music, etc etc. Which do still get high sales.
darn right U R! Why not call it the Billboard RB/Rap Awards show? Latino music has their own show already.
Rock and Country especially are under-represented while Classical and Jazz (yes there actually ARE those who listen to these genres) were MIA.
I have to disagree. Fergie's performance was most definitely the worst of the night. She seemed drunk or something. She couldn't even sing part of the song.
Where can I find a clip from an old movie of people fleeing a theatre? ( where they were making fun of K-fed)... or even a clip of the short announcement that Kevin Federline is doing a surprise performance... HELP~
