American Idol auditions in New York yield many potentials curlio
 2007-01-24 22:41:49
Television The American Idol auditions in New York were very fruitful. Not only did the judges get quite a few good people they passed on to Hollywood, but they got quite a few loons for the worst auditions reel! The two hour auditions are much nicer for giving us more video montages and more of the bad contestants.

The judges would be getting some famous help to judge the auditions in New York City. Songwriter Carol Bayer Sager has written some of the greatest love songs. She's earned an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony and some other awards. She's written such hits as "Groovy Kind of Love" and "That's What Friends are For." More importantly, she's from New York.

First up was the big-headed Ian Benardo, who you might have seen auditioning on So You Think You Can Dance. He had a hugely over-inflated ego, and went on and on about how awesome he is. He even told Ryan Seacrest that when he wins American Idol, Ryan will call him up and want to hand out with him. He was wearing this ugly fur thing, which he said was chinchilla. He "sang" Gloria. His accent was absolutely horrific, "kwalling" is what "calling" sounded like. Randy Jackson wondered if Ian is real. Simon Cowell told him it was hammy, bad, not funny and he's not good at anything. Ian got pissed off and asked if Simon has a working visa and demanded to see it. Ultimately he was ushered out by security. He told Ryan he's calling the National Geographic Channel to tell them the DoDo bird isn't extinct, it's sitting in that room.

Next up was Sarah Burgess, from Ohio. Her parents didn't know she was there auditioning, they thought she was at a friend's house. Apparently her dad doesn't support her in her ambitions. She only wants to make him proud but just hears how disappointed he is. She goes into the audition and tells the judges all of this. Randy tells her to prove her parents wrong. She sings "Call Me," and is good but not that WOW kind of great. Simon likes the attitude, says she's not the best singer, but she's a tryer. He adds that she doesn't have a bad voice. Randy likes her different sounding voice. Carol wants to be at home and have her father sitting at home watching her move ahead. She gets the pass and then goes out to break the news to her dad on the phone with the support (and camera) of Ryan.

Fania Tsakalakos, the female Constantine Maroulis, was next up. She's greek (which honestly was about the only comparison). She was in Greece during the Greek Idol competition and didn't try out but ended up being a backup dancer for the show. They heard her and told her she should have tried out. So here she was, trying out for American Idol. She sang "Africa" by Toto. Simon said it was appalling and the dancing was terrible too. Paula Abdul told him she hadn't seen him dance. Simon fired back that he never said he was a dancer either.

Ashanti Johnson has gone to Hollywood twice, but hadn't made it before. She says she's stronger now and better. Simon didn't like her performance though, calling it old fashioned and cabaret. Carol told her to go for some Broadway auditions. Ashanti tries to plead her case, saying she fought so hard for this. Simon told her she took up two spots in Hollywood before. She begs and pleads and wants to know what to do differently. Ryan comes on and announces, "These are the days of our Idols." Dramatic music plays, as Ashanti begs and pleads her case. She says America would love her if they would see her. Simon told her that the other three judges are Americans and they don't love her. Ultimately she finally got the idea and left, but only after she started to sing again.

Best friends Amanda Coluccio and Antonella Barba were up next. Amanda picks out the clothes for Antonella, as she has no sense of style. This year, they think there should be two American Idols. First up is Amanda, who tells the judges about her friend. They want the friend to come in. Simon says they're probably popular. Randy wants to know who is better. Antonella says that Amanda is because she's trained. They sing a duet, which Simon thought that was a mess. Amanda sings Patsy Cline by herself, which was better. Simon didn't think she really proved who she was but doesn't care one way or another. She gets a pass from the judges, though I think it was reluctantly. Antonella was better in her solo attempt. Simon told her she's better, and Carol agreed but didn't want to say it. Paula told her to never tell people that her friend is trained and she isn't so she's not great. Simon gave her a Hollywood tip though, after Antonella said that Amanda is better than that. Simon told her that when someone is down on the floor, you kick them. Antonella said she can't do that to her best friend.

Harmonica player Cliffton Biddle says he's an average joe that just wants to be the center of attention. Paula asks him about his job, as he works in a bank. He says the people he works with are great, he feels like he is on a reality show. He sings, very loudly I might add. And Simon notes that it was loud. They want another song, without stamping, but all Cliffton does it take out his harmonica and plays it. Simon thought that was squeeky, while Randy thought it was a John Popper sort of thing. Simon tells him it's 4 no votes. This leads to a parade of bad male singers.

The last contestant of the day is a girl, Kia Thornton. She is very excited. She sings Ain't No Way by Aretha Franklin. Simon says that she can sing, which leads to tears. Simon tells her that she didn't need him to tell her that. Kia says that she agrees with everything Simon says on the show. Carol tells her to be sure to not oversing. Paula tells her to be vulnerable. Randy appreciated the degree of difficulty. She gets a yes from all four. After she leaves, Simon says that the only problem is there's just no emotion.

On to day two, where Simon is missing in the AM. It seems he's a bit hungover or something.

Jenry Bejarano was up next. He was adopted when he was one, and his mother has always been supportive. He goes in and sings a love song. Randy asks Paula if the romance was on. Paula says she was surprised as he's only 16 and and has a nice texture to his voice. Carol says he is very charismatic. Randy likes him. Jenry almost walks out without his ticket though.

Nakia Claiborne, full of fun and energy, heads into the audition. Carol wonders what it feels like to come all this way. Nakia says it's been fun and a blast and she can't wait to go to Hollywood. She sings a fast upbeat song and gets everyone going. Paula says she's fun and infectious but wonders if she can bring it down. Nakia sings another song, which isn't as great. Paula tells her she needs a lot of work, as she was all over the place. Nakia says the nerves got to her on the slow song. Carol says on the first song there was a party and they didn't care about the flaws. Nakia wants to know how to change. She leaves and is so upset she made me get all teary. She says you get tired of hearing "no" all the time.

Sarah Goldberg, dressed as a cowgirl, comes in to sing. She sings, badly. Carol asks her if she thinks in her heart that she can sing. Sarah says no, she's not a singer. Randy wonders if she just wanted to be on TV. Sarah says that's not what it is, her friends make fun of her because she's tone deaf. She wants to be the first American Idol that can't sing, she wants them to teach her. She was really serious about it too, I might add. She goes on for a bit about how Paris Hilton can't sing. Randy tells her to look at the past winners behind her, who could all sing. She was really angry when she left, and ranted about how she made friends there, who told her the judges were out drinking until three am the previous day.

Speaking of hangovers, Simon reappears during the middle of the day and is given an auditory assault bny Antonio Torres Jr, who sings "New Yor New Yor" - no typo, he pronounced no 'k' when he sang it.

Jory Steinberg, who was born in Canada but lives in Santa Monica now, says she has passion, discipline and drive. She has met Prime Ministers and even the Queen of England. She says if she can handle the Queen of England, she can handle Simon Cowell. She sang great. Simon told her she was terrific. Paula told her it was very professional. Carol predicted she was going to Hollywood, and with four yes votes she was.

Porcelana Patino treated the audition process like bootcamp. She got up at 5am every day for a year to work out. She has lost 15 - 20 pounds for the audition. Carol wondered if she worked on her singing like she did her body. Porcelana said she has been obsessed with singing. Paula thought she was peculiar at first, and wondered if it was an act. But she says Porcelana is pretty awesome. Carol loves that she is unique and that she has worked so hard for this. She gets a group hug, not including Simon of course, after she gets a pass to Hollywood.

Next up is a clip of the judges getting a bunch of names wrong. This leads to Christopher Henry, who says he gets compared to George Michael, and naturally Simon Cowell. Paula says she totally sees it. Randy says he does look like Simon. Simon says Christopher is very good looking. Then Chris sings, Before Your Love by Kelly Clarkson, and yes in a very high voice. Randy wondered if that was indeed in his voice. Simon told him that in reality he should be singing in a dress and high heels. Paula tries to give Chris some advice about building an act around his strength, but keeps getting interrupted by Simon. I was getting tired of the judges agreeing on everything so a fight was a nice change of pace.

Rachel Zevita, an opera singer and a student in danger of losing her scholarship for coming to the audition, was up next. She sings a very weird song, and Randy stops her. Carol wants another song, which I thought was a lot better. Randy wanted to hear the opera, which was awesome. Simon asked her who she wants to be. Rachel says that they do different themes every week and she can sing any of them. Simon asks her again who she wants to be and she says she wants to be her. She gets a yes from Carol, Randy, and Paula. Simon tells her that all of her is coming to Hollywood.

Yeah! Video montage time! This time around it was really bad versions of "All Night Long!"

Christopher Richardson was up next. He got an immediate yes from Carol. Randy said he looks like Justin Timberlake, which is apparently what Paula and he whispered about while Chris was singing. Paula said he is special. Simon tells him he could surprise them in the next round. After he leaves, Paula predicts the girls will love him.

More video montage of bad singers leads to Nicholas Pedro, who left last year. He quit the show during the Hollywood round after he bombed during the group competition. He forgot the lyrics to Build Me Up Buttercup. He was haunted by quitting last year. He sings "Fly Me to the Moon" leaving Carol and Paula to sigh and "woohoo." Carol says he was wonderful. Randy liked it. Paula liked him before and likes him today. Simon tells him he made it back and he would have said yes as well.

Last up is Julie Isadora Furman, who didn't want to tell Ryan her first time as she prefers to be called Isadora. She says she reads palms. She reads Ryan's palms, though it sounds like she was getting it all wrong. She goes into the audition and Simon asks her if she can win. She says she can, as she can sing and dance. Simon asked her why she's smiling. Isadora says she's thankful for God's gifts (which weren't that obvious quite frankly). She sang "Lady Marmalade" like she was REALLY enjoying it. And I mean enjoying it as in "you need to turn down the volume before your neighbors think you're look at that porn stuff again" type of enjoying it. Simon stopped her and wondered what happens when she sings in public. Se says she sang with George Clinton and they loved it, though in other places she gets arrested. Simon says it was just horrendous. Isadora complained that they only do pop stars. Paula mentioned Chris Daughtry, but Isadora didn't really get the reference.

All in all, New York was a success, as 35 people went on to Hollywood. Next week we move on to Birmingham, Alabama, which has given us Bo Bice, Ruben Studdard, and Taylor Hicks!

Curlio...thanks for the update. Had a meeting tonight and taped the show, but to late to watch. I'll watch tomorrow. You know I think the judges are NOT being meaner this year, I just think they are being choosier. There have been some folks that I have thought were pretty darn good that didn't get through. Maybe sense it is their 6th season they are really being particular. Anywho, just a thought.

Ben and Nicole congrats to both of you. There is nothing like parenthood. (To be read, you better hold on tight!!!!) I just love babies...as long as they are not my own! Seriously, I have one of each and they are fantabulous.

Tonight's random thoughts:

Curlio said (regarding Jenry Bejarano):

"Paula says she was surprised as he's only 16 and and has a nice texture to his voice. "

Was I the only one gagging at Paula drooling over a 16 yr old?!? The looks she gave him while he was singing made me wonder, and then, after he left, she commented that "he is easy on the eyes". Considering that Paula and I are about the same age...I don't even begin to understand lusting someone that young!!

******************************************

IMO, I didn't see any singer tonight that lived up to the two in Memphis and the Indian twins from Seattle.

*****************************************

Congrats and best wishes to Ben and his wife!!

Ashanti Johnson haunted me the rest of the show... I thought she did a great job and was immediately shot down by Simon because he was in a bad mood and for some reason the rest of the judges agreed with him. She was better then some other who made it through, I was impressed when she hit the high note and the rest was good as well.

Thanks for the well wishes all! It is an exciting and tiring time to say the least!

NY did not impress me at all. Maybe it is because they only showed a handful of the 35 people who made it. I was impressed with Kia as she sounded like Jennifer Hudson. Paula was right on the mark when she said that Kia needs to tone it down as her runs were a bit irritating.

I was not impressed Rachel the opera singer. Granted, she can sing, but she is more of an imitator than a person who has discovered her own voice. Porcelana was another poser. She has no sense of who she is and her attitude reminded me of that Asian dude who made it into the Top 24 a year or two ago and always wore a hat - annoying.

I felt sorry for Ashanti as she is a great singer. She was as deserving to head to Hollywood as the two that followed. Ashanti was dramatic too making her a perfect Broadway candidate as the judges suggested. I also felt sorry for Nakia. She looks like she may have had a hard life but always had the spirit to keep her chin up. I hope this was not the ego death blow.

Waiting for the real show to start...

Loved the show, I'm glad the crazies we not as pitiful and challenged as the others, the main male and female crazy this week, the tone deaf girl and the Howard Stern dreg, wan-a-be, were deliciously insane.

On an ever better note, Ben and Nicole, Nicole and Ben have you considered the names, Will-ow, you know like on Buffy, or Will-etta, like a brilliant "Will" who just happens to be a girl, well, I'm just saying...............Will :o

Not that this has anything to do with AI, but we have considered William if it is a boy. We'll let you know.

Yay AI!

I agree with the parents to be Ben & Nicole. I guess the freak show formula works for the Idol producers, but I'd sure like to see a lot less Willian Hung wanna bees, and a lot more people that make it to Hollywood.

Regarding baby names for Ben & Nicole... if it's girl you can name her Katharine, or Carrie, or Kelly. Some good boy names would be Clay, Taylor, Chris, Ace, or William
-oops-

I have to agree with Luv. I would much rather see more of the people that made it through and less of the freakshow. To me, the freaks are all starting to look and sound alike. They are all delusional and are becoming boring. Just my humble opinion.

Do you think the reason they are not showing as many of the good people is because of the backlash from the fans of the people who make it to the top 20 and then get voted off because of lack of air time? Just a thought!

Yep, I thought the same thing and posted it previously.

I also wondered if they don't show more of the good people that barely don't make it so that they don't have to answer to the armchair critics as to why certain contestants made it and others didn't.

There's a fine line here...
On the one hand, early on, we only get to see the good performers the AI gods want us to see. You may recall that the producers really went all out for Carrie Underwood (I Luv her more than Kat Pee). She got a lot of time on camera including a visit to her farm they showed along with her first audition.
On the other hand, Bo Bice didn't get much air time until Hollywood (they showed his audition a day before Carrie won).

I remember a guy from a season or two ago that complained that he didn't get much time on camera. The judges said it was up to him to make the most of whatever time he gets... I can see both sides.

AI Producers: Give us less William Hungs, and more possible Carrie's or Taylor's early on please. Keep the camera on the really good auditions, hold the fluff pieces for the top 12 (did we really need to see the best friends from Jersey throwing a beach ball in the waves?)

That was two seasons ago...the producers struck back in the press and pointed out that this contestant had gotten about three or four times more camera time than Bo, but Bo was one of the leading vote-getters.
